From the President & CEO

The Guide

Dear Member,

The Member Magazine for WTTW and WFMT Renée Crown Public Media Center 5400 North Saint Louis Avenue Chicago, Illinois 60625

In 1951, Bernard and Rita Jacobs, having pawned their car and luggage, acquired full ownership of a struggling Chicago radio station. On December 13 of that year with Bernie serving as engineer and Rita as the announcer, WFMT signed on for the first time as Rita famously asked, “Is anybody listening?” Their goal: to produce and present fine arts content on the radio that they could enjoy, respect, and share with others. Seven decades later, that idea still guides WFMT, a worldrenowned brand with a reputation as a champion of classical music that presents world-class performances from Chicago and around the world accompanied by enlightening context from its knowledgeable hosts. I hope you will join us on WFMT’s 70th anniversary on Monday, December 13 for a full day of live performances by roots and blues artist Anne Harris, featured on our cover this month; Ravinia Festival’s Steans Piano Trio; the Chicago Symphony’s Lincoln Quartet; members of Lyric Opera of Chicago’s Ryan Opera Center, the Music Institute of Chicago, and the Wind Quintet of Chicago Sinfonietta; Chicago Musical Pathways Initiative String Quartet; and Music of the Baroque Brass Ensemble and Chorus. This all-day celebration will air/stream live from Northeastern Illinois University’s “Jewel Box” Recital Hall on 98.7FM, wfmt.com, and the WFMT app; and video of the performances will be streamed on Facebook and wfmt.com. On WTTW, we kick off December with an all-new special, Beyond Chicago from the Air with Geoffrey Baer, that will take us high above the dazzling fall foliage at Starved Rock State Park, the towering Indiana Dunes, the vast expanse of Lake Michigan, and a lost Native American city in Southern Illinois as he shares fun facts and fascinating history along the way. On wttw.com, discover some Chicago area film locations with Geoffrey just in time for some holiday movie watching, including the old Joliet Prison, which you will also see from the sky in Beyond Chicago from the Air. Across WTTW and WFMT throughout the month, we will be celebrating the holidays, and we hope you spend time with us for time-honored and new special programming. On behalf of all of us at WFMT and WTTW, I wish you a happy and healthy holiday season and thank you for your support this year. Sincerely, Sandra Cordova Micek President & CEO

WFMT’s 70th Anniversary

A Q&A with WFMT’s General Manager and Music Director By Keegan Morris This month marks WFMT’s 70th anniversary. Naturally, it’s a time that prompts retrospection, whether that means remembering Dmitri Shostakovich’s visit to the station in the 1970s, the moment when WFMT became the first station in the world to broadcast a CD, or Studs Terkel’s legendary 45-year run on air. And WFMT is also looking forward, with the addition of new voices to the hosting team as well as Oliver Camacho’s appointment as the new music director. With general manager George Preston, Camacho is working to evolve the music, celebrate unheralded and underrepresented artists and composers,

and create a welcoming on-ramp for new listeners. As we approach this celebratory and evolutionary moment, we sat down with George Preston and Oliver Camacho to discuss the 70th anniversary festivities and how they plan to kickstart the next seventy years of WFMT. The Guide: WFMT’s 70th anniversary will be marked with a “Day of Celebration” on Monday, December 13 (see page 24 for details). 70 years is a lot of time to encapsulate into one day of programming. Tell us about how you approached putting the day together.

as programmers to really listen to the music we are putting on the radio with fresh ears, and think to ourselves, “What are the most exciting things that we can put in the mix?” I think that new audiences for classical music do not necessarily know what the most famous pieces are in the same way that folks did 30 and 40 years ago. And so, in a way, we have a great opportunity to put music on the air that just sounds wonderful and resonates emotionally with people, whether it is famous or not. What we hear from our listeners very consistently is that they love the wide variety of the music that we play. We are hearing from people that they really appreciate the mix they are hearing, that they are understanding in a new way that classical music is a living and evolving artform.

George Preston: Part of it was highlighting the important institutional relationships that WFMT has. And of course, we wanted a good mix of perforCamacho: I am also really trying to mances. We’ve got two string quartets; emphasize the local ties of our music. George Preston and Oliver Camacho a piano trio; two singers from Ryan This month, we’ll play the Messiah, Opera Center; the Music of the Baroque starring a soprano who is a homechorus in a smaller configuration than usual; Anne Harris, a grown Baroque diva who now has a thriving international career. wonderful folk crossover violinist; and a wind quintet from the Robbie is doing a Chicago Musical Pathways Initiative show on Chicago Sinfonietta. We wanted to make sure that the repertoire Introductions, and then we’ll play Christmas From DePaul for for the day reflects a rich mix of different creators. the first time. The Guide: How does this anniversary fit into the ongoing work of the station?

The Guide: Why do you think this work is especially important today?

Oliver Camacho: Thinking about legacy and traditions, this anniversary coincides with our really taking a look at the library and deciding which are the pieces we want to make sure we are centering. Removing old-fashioned interpretations and making sure that we hold on to the historical performances that are categorically agreed upon as a master interpretation. Part of that is asking, “Who are the new artists that are coming through?” And of course, “Who are the new composers that we are adding to that mix?”

Preston: A lot of the problems facing the world are extremely daunting, and the resolution of these problems is not clear. But one thing we can do to help is make sure that the world has easy access to great music and great art, whether it is for reassurance, solace, inspiration, or beauty. People have always turned to art to find their way through dark places. The Guide: Finally, how do you feel now, as we approach this exciting celebration?

The 70th anniversary also coincides with an exciting time for our host team. We have the anchors of our veteran hosts, and we also have new paths of programming that are happening because of collaborations with LaRob K. Rafael, Kristina Lynn, and Robbie Ellis.

Preston: Right now, I am grateful for the amazing team that we have at WFMT for all the work they put in, and for our long legacy of respecting listeners and presenting a broad range of music. I am more excited than I have ever been to be working in classical music and seeing what lies ahead.

Preston: I think this moment also sees us challenging ourselves

In the Spotlight Erin Morley

Eurydice by Matthew Aucoin and Sarah Ruhl The new broadcast season of the Metropolitan Opera begins with an Orpheus and Eurydice for the 21st century. Based on Sarah Ruhl’s acclaimed play, the brilliant American composer Matthew Aucoin reimagines the familiar Greek myth from Eurydice’s point of view. The technically dazzling coloratura soprano Erin Morley stars in the title role — audiences may remember her silver-toned Sophie from a recent broadcast of Der Rosenkavalier. With baritone Joshua Hopkins (Belcore in Lyric’s Elixir of Love), countertenor Jakub Józef Orliński (MOB”s Vocal Concertos in 2018), baritone Nathan Berg, and tenor Barry Banks, conducted by Yannick Nézet-Séguin.

Introductions: Chicago Musical Pathways Initiative This week, Robbie Ellis spotlights four CMPI Fellows of the 2022 graduating class, three of whom play instruments not typically featured as soloists (viola, trombone, and percussion). All CMPI Fellows have affiliations with organizations that foster and develop young classical musicians from all over the city such as Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra, the Hyde Park Suzuki Institute, Merit School of Music, and Musical Arts Institute. CMPI’s mission is to help prepare gifted and motivated students from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds for acceptance into top-tier music conservatories, colleges and universities.

Minnesota-based period instrument group The Rose Ensemble joined by Piffaro, The Renaissance Band, dance their way to Bethlehem with sounds from the streets of Mother Spain mingled with African rhythms and indigenous languages, and the pageantry of the Franciscan missions of California and New Mexico.
