A century ago, corrupt money swamped Montana’s government, but Montanans weren’t having it; they rose up to prohibit corporate campaign contributions. This political thriller examines one of the greatest threats to American democracy: the influence of untraceable corporate money on our elections and elected officials. Travel to Montana – a front line in the fight to preserve fair elections nationwide – to follow an intrepid local journalist, John S. Adams, who goes to extraordinary lengths to expose the real-life impacts of the U.S. Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision, at great personal sacrifice. MEMBER PERKS 2-for-1 Tickets to Ananya Dance Theatre

2-for-1 Tickets to International Pianist Inna Faliks Returning to her alma mater with a Chicago premiere, Music Institute alumna Inna Faliks performs her autobiographical concert-monologue Polonaise-Fantaisie: The Story of a Pianist, which traces her journey from the former Soviet Union to the freedom of the United States and a life in music. She tells her incredible story while playing music that spans 289 years, interspersed with her own writings chronicling her upbringing in Odessa, Ukraine; her musical and romantic awakenings; and her immigration to the U.S. as a Jewish refugee. Polonaise-Fantaisie: The Story of a Pianist takes place Sunday, February 10 at 3:00 pm at Nichols Concert Hall, 1490 Chicago Avenue in Evanston. WTTW members may purchase two full-price tickets for the price of one, subject to availability, by calling (847) 448-8328 and using the code WTTW. For more information about the program, please visit musicinst.org.

The Dance Center of Columbia College presents Ananya Dance Theatre’s work Shyamali: Sprouting Words (“dark green”) which draws a metaphor between the resilience of grass, which springs up when trod upon, and the courage of women who sustain their communities against injustice and refuse to be broken. This company of self-described cultural activists makes its Dance Center debut with a work exploring how dissent against oppression fuels life force. Poetic, defiant, and transformational, Shyamali: Sprouting Words is a “spellbinding work of strength, agility, concentration, and exotic beauty” (The Maui News). The Dance Center presents Ananya Dance Theatre’s Shyamali: Sprouting Words, Thursday through Saturday, February 14-16, at 7:30 pm at the Dance Center, 1306 S. Michigan Avenue in Chicago. 2-for-1 Tickets to World Premiere Little Stones The Saint Sebastian Players (SSP) continue their 38th season with the world premiere of Little Stones by company member Leigh Johnson. In this romantic drama combining notions of reincarnation and fate, a young director and actress rehearsing different plays in adjacent classrooms of St. Bonaventure School in the autumn of 2018 find themselves inexplicably drawn to one another. Is it merely mutual attraction, or is it something deeper, more mysterious – a possible reconnection of old souls whose past lives were tragically cut short 100 years earlier? Combining neighborhood history with New Age sensibilities, Little Stones is a made-in-Chicago fable of karma, theatre, and the 1918 flu pandemic. Performances are February 15 through March 10, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 pm and Sundays at 2:00 pm at St. Bonaventure, 1625 W. Diversey in Chicago. Free parking is available in two lots. WTTW members may purchase two full-price tickets for the price of one, subject to availability, by emailing tickets@saintsebastianplayers.org and mentioning WTTW. For information visit saintsebastianplayers.org.

Among the wealth of untold stories in American history is the rise and slow disappearance of all-Black towns that sprung up in Oklahoma following the end of the Civil War. Founded in an effort to convince the U.S. to create an all-black state, most of these towns have now been swallowed up by nearby counties and cities, or are clinging desperately for their survival.

Teresa Carreño: Triple-Threat Musician on Fiesta

A special for February focuses on the music created and interpreted by African Americans from Colonial times to now. Portraits in Black, Brown, and Beige is named in honor of Duke Ellington’s jazz symphony.

Teresa Carreño (1853-1917) forged an international career as a pianist, composer, and conductor during a time when women weren’t customarily prominent in these realms. Elbio Barilari will celebrate the Venezuela native.

Clémentine Margaine

French mezzo-soprano Clémentine Margaine re-visits one of her signature roles, the title character in Bizet’s Carmen, for the 2018-19 production at the Metropolitan Opera, where the time and setting of the drama are updated to the early 20th-century era of the Spanish Civil War. The original setting was the Spanish city of Seville in the early 19th century. Carmen is now one of the world’s two or three most popular operas, though its 1875 premiere was ill-received; audience and critics apparently objected to the “amoral” nature of the leading character and the stark realism of the ending. Joining Margaine at the Met are Roberto Alagna as the lovestruck soldier Don José, Alexander Vinogradov as the bullfighter Escamillo, and Aleksandra Kurzak as Micaela, Don José’s onetime love. Louis Langree is the conductor.

Renaud Capuçon

The Chicago Symphony and Semyon Bychkov An all-Brahms CSO concert began in the fall of 2015 with music that wasn’t by Brahms. It was called Brahms-Fantasie and was written by the contemporary German composer Detlev Glanert as a companion piece to Brahms’ Symphony No. 1 in C Minor. The fantasy explores and elaborates on material from a number of Brahms compositions; it had its US premiere on this occasion. Bychkov and the orchestra went on with the Brahms First Symphony – of course – and they also were joined by violinist Renaud Capuçon for the composer’s great Violin Concerto in D Major. Bychkov has been a frequent guest conductor with the CSO, and this season he’ll also visit the orchestras of New York, Cleveland, the Royal Concertgebouw of Amsterdam, the Munich Philharmonic, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. In October of 2018 he assumed his new position as music director and chief conductor of the Czech Philharmonic.

Met Double Bill: Tchaikovsky, Bartók Stylistically very different, two one-act operas, Tchaikovsky’s Iolanta and Bartók’s Bluebeard’s Castle, form an unusual double bill at the Metropolitan Opera. The stage director, Mariusz Trelinski, sees a thread connecting the two with the theme of what he identifies as controlling relationships: Iolanta is kept in ignorance of her blindness by her father, King René, while Judith is in the power of her husband, the mysterious Bluebeard. Through the influence of her lover, Count Vaudémont, and the care of a wise physician, Ibn-Hakla, Iolanta is brought to understanding of her situation and her blindness is cured; Judith seeks knowledge of her husband’s character and his past, and comes at length to her own downfall. Sonya Yoncheva and Matthew Polenzani star in Iolanta, while Gerald Finzi and Angela Denoke portray Bluebeard and Judith.

Luca Pisaroni

A Classic from Mozart and the Met Don Giovanni is the second of the three so-called Da Ponte operas composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. He and librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte also collaborated on The Marriage of Figaro and Così fan tutte; they called their Don Juan tale a “dramma giocoso,” or Joking Drama – what we might call a tragicomedy or a dramedy. There’s plenty of humor in it, plus a lot of attempted seductions and portrayals of true love too, before Don Giovanni meets his startling, supernatural fate through the ghostly intervention of one of his victims. Set in 18th-century Spain, city unspecified, the Metropolitan Opera’s current production stars Luca Pisaroni in the title role and Ildar Abdrazakov as Leporello.

In the Spotlight Kirill Gerstein

The CSO, Muti, Gerstein From November 2017 at Symphony Center comes a performance of Brahms’ First Piano Concerto with pianist Kirill Gerstein. Chicago Symphony music director Riccardo Muti opens the program with a Symphonic Prelude by Puccini, and he continues it with a suite from Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme by Richard Strauss. Strauss and his collaboratorlibrettist, Hugo von Hofmannsthal, spent years being undecided about what they wanted to do with this classic French comedy by Molière. Turn it into an opera? Present it as a play with incidental music? Tie it in some way to another opera, Ariadne auf Naxos? Finally, it became this concert suite, a charming Straussian evocation of the 18th century.

Bill McGlaughlin

Exploring Music – and Music Critics The composer Jean Sibelius once said, “They never built a statue for a music critic.” Taking the position that good music critics are not to be despised in this way, Bill McGlaughlin will examine the life and influence of several critics, including composer Robert Schumann, who spent many years in the parallel career of music journalist, and gave major support and publicity to both Chopin and Brahms. Bill will take a positive attitude toward the profession of criticizing and appreciating music, and we’ll hear him in conversation with several critics about their role.

Nadine Sierra

The Metropolitan Opera’s Rigoletto It started out as a Victor Hugo play, Le Roi S’Amuse, about the decadent court of King Francis I of France in the 16th century. Verdi and his librettist adapted the tale, which ran into censor trouble because it portrayed a king unfavorably. So the setting was changed to another 16th-century court, in Italy this time, where the king was transformed into the promiscuous and predatory Duke of Mantua, and the title became Rigoletto. The title remains Rigoletto at the Met, but director Michael Mayer has updated the setting to Las Vegas in the year 1960: gangsters instead of courtiers. The casino atmosphere can’t be conveyed over the radio, of course, but we can sense it through the music (and see photos at metopera. org). Roberto Frontali sings the title role, Vittorio Grigolo is the Duke, and Nadine Sierra is Gilda, Rigoletto’s daughter and the Duke’s victim.

Yo-Yo Ma

Riccardo Muti and Yo-Yo Ma Two seldom-heard works from Russian composers of the 20th century make up a concert from June 2018 by the Chicago Symphony, music director Riccardo Muti, and guest cellist Yo-Yo Ma. Dmitri Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No. 2 dates from the year 1966, and like his first one in this medium, was composed for his friend, the great cellist Mstislav Rostropovich. It is structured in an unusual way: the opening movement is the slow movement, marked Largo, with the remaining two marked Allegretto. The scoring indicates extra percussion – wood block, xylophone, etc. – but no brass instruments except French horns. Serge Prokofiev based his Symphony No. 3 on the music for his opera The Fiery Angel, which was completed in the late 1920s but never performed in the composer’s lifetime. The symphony got its first hearing in Paris in 1929; it has never been as often played as some of the composer’s other works. To round out this broadcast, we’ll hear highlights from one of those other works from Muti and the orchestra: the ballet Romeo and Juliet.
