From the President & CEO
The Guide
Dear Member,
The Member Magazine for WTTW and WFMT Renée Crown Public Media Center 5400 North Saint Louis Avenue Chicago, Illinois 60625
This February, we are honored to commemorate Black History Month with a full month of new specials and programming. We’ll bring you award-winning filmmaker Stanley Nelson’s new American Masters documentary Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool, which delves into the six-decade career of this musical genius. And don’t miss two compelling Independent Lens documentaries – Always in Season, which follows a mother’s quest to solve the mystery of her son’s death; and Cooked - Survival by Zip Code, which takes us back to Chicago’s deadly 1995 heat wave to explore the role poverty and racism played in the tragedy. On wttw.com, meet the Cooked filmmaker, recall Chicago’s role in the development of food standards, and explore the local history of the women’s suffrage movement to mark its 100th anniversary. On WFMT, we’ll present the Metropolitan Opera’s acclaimed production of George Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess, starring Eric Owens, Angel Blue, and Denyce Graves; a tribute to the groundbreaking African American soprano Leontyne Price; and a special With Heart and Voice focusing on spirituals. Also, throughout the month, hear numerous works by African American composers and/or recorded by African American artists, including Duke Ellington, Florence Price, William Grant Still, Marian Anderson, and Herbie Hancock. On wfmt.com, look for a story about operas by African American composers from the past and present. Enjoy your February, and thank you for your support. Sincerely,
Sandra Cordova Micek President & CEO

Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool – American Masters This documentary delves into the six-decade career of a musical genius from his days as a Juilliard student to the development of his signature sound on recordings with his famous quintet, from his collaborations with Gil Evans to his shifts to new musical paradigms in the ’70s and ’80s. As the film tracks Davis’s boundary-breaking musical triumphs, the meanderings of his complicated personal life are traced with intimate reflections from those closest to him. Previously unseen footage and a soundtrack full of Davis’s music are complemented by new interviews with friends, fellow musicians, collaborators, and scholars to create a full portrait of a complex man.

Ruth Crawford Seeger
Exploring Music with Bill McGlaughlin A Keyboard Smorgasbord is far from just pianos: also included will be music for harpsichord, organ, accordions, mallet instruments, and synthesizers. (Probably some surprises too.) When Bill planned his first installment of American Masters, to move beyond the nexus of Copland-Barber-BernsteinGershwin, he focused on somewhat lesser known creators born around the turn of the 20th century: Walter Piston, William Grant Still, Howard Hanson, and Ruth Crawford Seeger. Also for February, It Was A Lover and His Lass will lead up to Valentine’s Day, along with an anthology of tone poems to end the month.

Dover Quartet
Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival Sir William Walton’s Façade provides musical background to and commentary on poetry by Dame Edith Sitwell (1887-1964). A set of Façade excerpts was recently performed by an ensemble of winds, cello, and percussion with two narrators, under the direction of Lawrence Foster. The satirical and sometimes whimsical poems and their accompaniments could not be more different from the other work on the program, the String Quartet No. 2 by Alexander von Zemlinsky, a highly emotional single-movement work with five sections sharply contrasted in terms of tempo. The artists are the members of the Dover Quartet. The work was composed in 1913, and its sound has been compared to that of Arnold Schoenberg’s string sextet called Transfigured Night.

From the Metropolitan Opera: Faust Though Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s drama Faust is generally regarded as the prime masterpiece of German literature, the claim could be made that the story – or at least the first part of it – is better known in musical form. Examples on the opera stage include Gounod’s work plus Boito’s Mefistofele, and on the concert stage, there is a work by Schumann plus the second movement of Mahler’s Eighth Symphony. When Hector Berlioz encountered Goethe, he created an opera-like work that he called a dramatic legend, titling it The Damnation of Faust (giving away the ending?). The work, which the Metropolitan Opera says “defies easy categorization,” has been given full-scale operatic stagings, but this season, the Met is presenting it in concert form. The English conductor Edward Gardner is on the podium, and mezzosoprano Elina Garanca portrays Faust’s betrayed love, Marguerite.

Chicago Symphony Orchestra Radio Broadcasts WFMT’s February programs are all led by Riccardo Muti, celebrating his 10th year as the orchestra’s music director. Muti will lead Shostakovich’s Babi Yar symphony to open this month’s sequence, then continue with a Beethoven-Hindemith program highlighted by guest pianist David Fray and by Mathis der Maler, the symphony Hindemith created from his opera of the same title. The remaining broadcasts feature soloists from the orchestra: harpist Sarah Bullen playing Debussy as part of a Debussy-Tchaikovsky program, Jennifer Gunn in a piccolo concerto by Ken Benshoof, and Charles Vernon in a bass trombone concerto by James M. Stephenson. Both of these works were CSO commissions.

Simone Lansma
The New York Philharmonic This Week: Britten and Shostakovich Critic Edward Sava-Segal has stated that, even though their styles were different, Benjamin Britten and Dmitri Shostakovich greatly admired each other and each other’s music. The Netherlands’ Simone Lamsma performs Britten’s rarely heard Violin Concerto, composed during Britten’s brief sojourn in the U.S. during the late 1930s and early 1940s; it may have been inspired, at least in part, by events of the Spanish Civil War. Also from the 1940s, Shostakovich’s Leningrad Symphony is likewise war-related, specifically to the Nazi siege of the Soviet city of Leningrad (now St. Petersburg). This concert is conducted by the Philharmonic’s music director, Jaap van Zweden.

Lisette Oropesa and Michael Fabiano
From the Metropolitan Opera: Manon Last autumn’s Met performances of Massenet’s Manon starred soprano Lisette Oropesa in the title role of the Paris courtesan beloved by a nobleman (tenor Michael Fabiano). The production updated the time of their tragic affair from the 18th century to the late 19th, when the work was actually composed. The story may seem dated to 21st century audiences, but Massenet’s music and the vibrancy of the central character are still compelling. As the Met puts it: “While the story is firmly set in class and gender issues of the past, the character of Manon herself is timeless, convincing, and familiar.” Maurizio Benini is the conductor.

The Los Angeles Philharmonic in Concert: Chinese Celebration, New Adams Former Gustavo Dudamel conducting fellow Elim Chan, a native of Hong Kong, assembled a group of musicians from China, plus the Taiwanese-born violinist Ray Chen, to celebrate the Lunar New Year in 2019. Chim opened the concert with Spring Festival Overture by Li Huanzhi, then presented violin showpieces by Ravel and Saint-Saëns to contrast with the works by Chinese composers. The series will also feature a world premiere, Thirst by Du Yun, and Saibei Dance by the Chinese-Canadian composer An-Lun Huang; Dance of the Yao Tribe, natives of southern and southwest China, by Liu Tieshan; and Ravel’s Bolero. The following week brings keyboard superstar Yuja Wang to join the Philharmonic and Dudamel for the premiere of John Adams’ latest piano concerto, Must the Devil Have All the Good Tunes?. To the soloist and a large standard orchestra, Adams added a bass guitar and an upright, detuned, “honky-tonk” piano, plus a lot of percussion. After this premiere, a Philharmonic centennial commission, Dudamel concludes the concert with Mahler’s Symphony No. 1.
