The Guide

Dear Member, Happy New Year! In 2016, while Downton Abbey embarks upon its sixth and final season, we are excited to premiere a new drama series Mercy Street – a compelling story set against the backdrop of the Civil War. We know you will instantly be drawn into the lives of a diverse cast of characters – doctors, nurses, contraband laborers, and Southern loyalists – who intersect in the chaotic world of Union-occupied Alexandria, Virginia, and the Mansion House Hospital. And on New Year’s night, our very contemporary Sherlock Holmes and his faithful friend Dr. Watson find themselves transported back to 1890s London as they race against time to crack the case of The Abominable Bride. Also on WTTW11, after the annual New Year’s concert from Vienna with Julie Andrews, Finding Your Roots returns to delve into the fascinating ancestry of more notable Americans; Hat Trick recalls the Chicago Blackhawks’ first Stanley Cup win on home ice in more than 75 years; many new engaging webisodes of our culinary conversation series Chat, Please! are available for viewing at wttw.com; In Performance at the White House celebrates creativity; and we celebrate Willie Nelson as he is recognized with the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize. We’ll also marvel at Nature’s Natural Born Hustlers and travel to Antarctica with NOVA; new episodes are back on Check, Please!; and we’ll present profiles of the notorious outlaws Bonnie & Clyde, cinema legend Charlie Chaplin, and comedian and director Mike Nichols, an influential figure in the early days of WFMT. You can watch all of this content on WTTW11 or online. WFMT begins the New Year with gala concerts by the Vienna Philharmonic and the Berlin Philharmonic: a morning Strauss Family extravaganza with Mariss Jansons conducting the Vienna musicians, then that evening, Sir Simon Rattle leading the Berlin ensemble in a festive concert featuring music by Maurice Ravel. January 2016 is Arts Month on WFMT. In a cross-platform initiative, we’ll devote four Fridays to exploring the relationships among music, dance, literature, theater, and the visual arts, both on the radio and via a rich cornucopia of online content. And from Lyric Opera of Chicago comes an early Verdi masterwork, his dramatic Nabucco. Remember that you can enjoy WFMT wherever you are, whenever you want, on wfmt.com or via our apps for Apple and Android devices. Again, all of us at WTTW and WFMT wish you a happy, healthy, and prosperous 2016. Sincerely,

Dan Schmidt President & CEO

Live from WFMT: Piano and Strings

Chicago’s Avalon Quartet in Levin Studio

Early in the month Bill investigates Ottorino Respighi (1879-1936) a composer who launched Italian symphonic music into the 20th century. Later in January, Bill presents a weeklong Schubertiade.

The Sheridan Solisti will present Dvorak’s beloved Piano Quintet plus two rarities: a piano quintet by John Field and the Grande Sextet by Mikhail Glinka. Kerry Frumkin hosts.

Mondays-Fridays, January 4-8 and 25-29, 7:00 pm

Monday, January 4, 8:00 pm

This acclaimed ensemble has a new concert series at the Art Institute, featuring chamber music by Mieczyslaw Weinberg (1919-1996), a Soviet-era composer of Polish-Jewish origin. Kerry Frumkin hosts a preview on Impromptu.

Mariss Jansons

Two New Year’s Day Concerts The Vienna Philharmonic New Year’s concert celebrates its 75th anniversary in 2016. At press time the program was not available, but we know it’ll feature waltzes, polkas, and other festive compositions by members of the Strauss family, all performed in the Golden Hall of Vienna’s venerable Musikverein. This year’s guest conductor is the Latvian-born maestro Mariss Jansons, whose association with the VPO dates from 1992. On New Year’s Eve, the Berlin Philharmonic plans a gala celebration of French music in its concert home, the Philharmonie, led by music director Sir Simon Rattle with guest violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter. Mutter’s association with the BPO goes back to 1977, when she was discovered by then-music director Herbert von Karajan as a 13-year-old prodigy. She’ll be playing Saint-Saëns’ Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso and Ravel’s Tzigane. The European Broadcasting Union is making the concert available for air the day after the performance.

Members of eighth blackbird

WFMT’s Arts Month What are the relationships between music and other art forms, like painting, poetry, and dance? What music has inspired great visual, dramatic, and literary artists of the past and present? Our hosts and producers hope to explore these questions and others as we devote four Fridays to diverse, yet related, topics: music and the visual arts, music and literature, music and theater, and finally music and dance. We’ll be hearing from creative artists of many stripes who share their thoughts, and play music that illustrates the many relationships among art forms. Be sure to check wfmt.com for related website features, and we hope you’ll be able to join us for some or all of these special Fridays. A highlight of January 8 will be a live 8:00 pm broadcast from the Museum of Contemporary Art featuring eighth blackbird, the museum’s new ensemble-in-residence, and we plan to share other live events too.

Michael Barenboim

Noteworthy from the Chicago Symphony Michael Barenboim (b. 1985) is the son of pianist-conductor Daniel Barenboim and pianist Elena Baskirova. He studied music and philosophy in Berlin and Paris and has concertized internationally; this season he’s a soloist with Italy’s Santa Cecilia Orchestra, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, and the National Orchestra of Spain among other groups. A noted interpreter of music by Pierre Boulez, he was also the soloist at the Vienna Philharmonic’s first performance of the Violin Concerto by Arnold Schoenberg. He also played this concerto in Chicago with CSO guest conductor Asher Fisch, one of January’s featured Chicago Symphony Orchestra broadcasts. We’ll also be hearing last February’s all-Mozart concert led by music director Riccardo Muti. Joined by the CSO Chorus and a solo quartet, Muti led a performance of the D Minor Requiem Mass. The concert opens with Rudolf Buchbinder playing the C Minor Piano Concerto.

Monteverdi

A Monteverdi Rarity As music director at the prestigious St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice, Claudio Monteverdi branched out during his final years to compose operas for the city’s annual Carnival seasons. One of these was Il Ritorno d’Ulisse in Patria from 1640, setting to music the familiar mythological story of the Greek hero Ulysses’ return from the Trojan War and his vanquishing of the opportunistic suitors who were plaguing his faithful wife, Penelope. The opera features lyrical solos for these two principal characters, but beautiful music is also provided for other members of the large cast, notably the secondary lovers, Penelope’s maid Melanto and the suitors’ servant, Eurimaco. The music given to Minerva, the goddess of wisdom, also stands out. Several ancient gods and goddesses have roles to play: Minerva, Cupid, Neptune, and Jupiter, plus allegorical figures including Human Frailty, Time, and Fortune. Baroque-music maven Nikolaus Harnoncourt conducts the recording Peter Van De Graaff will present.

Carnegie Hall Live: The Visiting Philadelphians The first 2016 presentation in the ongoing Carnegie Hall Live series will feature the Philadelphia Orchestra performing a famous Strauss waltz, Tales from the Vienna Woods, and a modern work inspired by it, HK Gruber’s Charivari. The body of the program features Beethoven’s Fourth Piano Concerto and a Mahler orchestration of his “Serioso” string quartet. Philadelphia music director Yannick Nézet-Séguin has been with the orchestra since 2012 and also leads the Rotterdam Philharmonic; he’s a native of Montreal who studied at the Quebec Conservatory and New Jersey’s Westminster Choir College, in addition to being mentored by the famed conductor Carlo Maria Giulini. The dynamic young soloist in Beethoven’s concerto will be Jan Lisiecki, Gramophone magazine’s Young Artist of the Year for 2013, the year he also won the Leonard Bernstein Award. A native of Canada, he’s recorded music by Mozart and Chopin and appeared with orchestras worldwide. His appearance with the Philadelphia Orchestra will mark his Carnegie Hall debut. This season’s broadcasts celebrate the renowned concert venue’s 125th anniversary season.

Monday 18 Verdi’s Nabucco at Lyric Opera A tale involving political and religious struggles could be set in any major modern locale, or in the far-off and long-ago world of the Hebrew Bible, the years of the ancient Israelites’ Babylonian captivity. Nabucco, or Nebuchadnezzar, is the tormented ruler being portrayed at Lyric by baritone Zeljko Lucic. His daughter Abigaille, a warrior princess, is sung by dramatic soprano Tatiana Serjan, and his gentler daughter Fenona will be portrayed by Elizabeth DeShong. There’s also a mighty basso role, Zaccaria, the Israelite priest being sung by Russian bass Dmitry Belosselskiy. There’s a great deal of wonderful Verdian music to hear and enjoy during this opera, not least the famous Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves. The work was Verdi’s first major success, the one that put him on the map of Italian opera for all time. Peter Van De Graaff and Lyric’s Roger Pines will co-host WFMT’s live broadcast.
