From the President & CEO Dear Member, Happy New Year! This month, we are excited to premiere the highly anticipated third season of the period drama Victoria from MASTERPIECE. Continuing the story of Victoria’s rule over the largest empire the world has ever known, you will meet fascinating new historical characters, including Laurence Fox (Inspector Lewis) as the vainglorious Lord Palmerston, who crosses swords with the Queen over British foreign policy. Also on WTTW11, wttw.com/watch, and our video app this month, we know you have been waiting for the return of Doc Martin. He’s back and the talk of the town is the wedding of the Portwenn police officer Joe Penhale and Janice Bone. On wttw.com, learn how the new season of Finding Your Roots uncovers the ancestry of its subjects, and go behind the curtain for the first collaboration between Lyric Opera of Chicago and the Joffrey Ballet on their Orphée et Eurydice. On 98.7WFMT, wfmt.com/listen, and the WFMT app, the Metropolitan Opera on Saturday afternoons features Verdi’s Otello conducted by Gustavo Dudamel, Cilea’s Adriana Lecouvreur starring Anna Netrebko, Debussy’s enigmatic Pelléas et Mélisande, and a new work by Nico Muhly based on Hitchcock’s film Marnie. And on wfmt.com, we’ll bring you a Facebook Live video from Northwestern with the Dover Quartet and a birthday tribute to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Plus, our program hosts will reveal the classical music they’re most looking forward to in 2019. We hope WTTW and WFMT helps you ward off the January chill. Thanks for your support! Sincerely, Sandra Cordova Micek President & CEO

Queen Victoria

Queen Victoria and Her Nine Children This is the story of Queen Victoria – a widow in mourning who had to raise her nine children on a very public stage. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert were an unusually devoted couple with strong ideas about the role of the Royal Family. But when Albert died, Queen Victoria was left a single (career) mother. Queen Victoria and Her Nine Children explores Victoria’s struggle to mourn her husband’s death, carry out her Royal duties and keep both her family and public in check. It’s a fascinating glimpse at the private tensions that rumbled behind Queen Victoria’s impressive public façade.

Lava through trees

NOVA: Island Volcano Thousands of Hawaiian residents were uprooted in 2018 when Kilauea volcano erupted, sending rivers of lava through communities and into the ocean. This frightening spike in Kilauea’s activity transformed parts of the island paradise into a roaring inferno, spewing rock and causing massive destruction. Join scientists and local residents as they head underground to investigate the geological cause of the eruption. Along the way, discover how Hawaii’s distinctive volcanoes formed in the first place, and what they tell us about the future of Hawaii.

Live on Introductions

Latin-American Baroque

Conductor Christian Thielemann currently directs the Dresden Staatskapelle and the Salzburg Easter Festival. This year he takes the podium for the Vienna Philharmonic’s annual New Year’s concert, music of the Strauss family from the Vienna Musikverein.

Alice Zhang, 17, from Vernon Hills High School, won the 2017 MostArt Festival piano competition and was also recognized by the Music Teachers National Association. She’ll be appearing live on Introductions and on our Facebook page!

The rediscovery of musical treasures from Latin America’s colonial period, the 17th and 18th centuries, has added much to our appreciation of the cultural heritage from that era. Fiesta! explores this repertory in “Palaces and Cathedrals.”

Dudamel Leading Otello at the Metropolitan Opera Gustavo Dudamel makes his Metropolitan Opera debut as conductor of the company’s current revival of Verdi’s Otello. One of three Verdi operas based on the works of Shakespeare, Otello stars tenor Stuart Skelton in the title role, soprano Sonya Yoncheva as his wife, Desdemona, and Zeljko Lucic as Iago, who schemes for the destruction of both, with Jennifer Johnson Cano as Emilia. First performed at La Scala-Milan in 1887, the opera has a libretto by Arrigo Boito – whose own opera, Mefistofele, we heard from the Met in early December. The production, by Bartlett Sher, updates the original 15th-century setting of Shakespeare’s tragedy to the late 19th century. Highlights of the score include the opening victory chorus, Iago’s chilling aria Credo, and the poignant final scene between Desdemona and Emilia, in which the doomed wife tells the Willow Song story followed by a prayer, Ave Maria.

Anna Netrebko

Anna Netrebko as Adriana Io son l’umile ancella – I am the humble servant of art – is a highlight of Francesco Cilea’s opera Adriana Lecouvreur, based remotely on the life of a French actress of the early 18th century. Adriana is currently being portrayed in a new production by superstar soprano Anna Netrebko, singing this role for the first time at the Metropolitan Opera. She’s joined by tenor Piotr Beczala as her lover, the soldier-nobleman Maurizio. The emphasis of this work is strongly on lyrical melody, in a nostalgic and somewhat exotic theatrical-backstage setting. The story is a complex web of love rivalries and mistaken identities, and the ending is not a happy one, but before that, there’s a lot of delicious music to enjoy.

Debussy’s Operatic Masterpiece from the Met The evocative music of Claude Debussy is a perfect fit for the enigmatic Symbolist plot and vague, allusive dialogue of Maurice Maeterlinck’s play Pelléas et Mélisande. The Metropolitan Opera’s commentary points out that the music uses subtle shifts of tone colors and constantly-evolving musical motifs to create a quasi-medieval atmosphere, enhanced by occasional quotations from ancient harmonic modes. The setting of Pelléas is a mythical kingdom, Allemonde, not pinned down to a particular time period, though sometime in the Middle Ages is suggested – but the costumes shown in photos of the Jonathan Miller production reflect a later era. The lovers are portrayed by tenor Paul Appleby and soprano Isabel Leonard, with Kyle Ketelson as Golaud, Mélisande’s husband and Pelléas’ brother. Met music director Yannick Nézet-Séguin is on the podium.

Donald Runnicles

The Chicago Symphony and Donald Runnicles From spring 2016 comes a concert highlighted by Elgar’s Enigma Variations, a work given its US premiere by Theodore Thomas and the CSO in 1902. The performance was part of the celebration of our symphony’s 125th anniversary. It was led by Donald Runnicles – who, when not guest-conducting, holds several prestigious international posts, notably music director of the Deutsche Oper Berlin. To companion the Elgar, Runnicles chose Britten’s Sinfonia da Requiem, a World War II-era work inspired in part by the composer’s pacifist convictions, and Richard Strauss’ evocative tone poem Death and Transfiguration.

Relevant Tones: Returning to Le Poisson Rouge The Red Fish, to translate it, was founded by two graduates of the Manhattan School of Music in 2008 on the site of the legendary Village Gate. The idea was to create a performance and arts venue that would encourage the fusion of popular and art cultures in the realms of music, theater, dance, film, and visual arts, welcoming a variety of musicians – chamber-music players, indie rockers, and jazz artists. Recently it welcomed pianist Jenny Lin, performing solo works written for her by members of the New York composer collective ICEBERG. Seth Boustead recorded this evening, and he’ll present it as part of this month’s lineup on Relevant Tones.

Isabel Leonard

From Novel to Movie to Opera: Marnie at the Met Marnie is a suspense novel by Winston Graham, of Poldark fame, that was made into a movie by Alfred Hitchcock, and has now been turned into an opera by American composer Nico Muhly. This Metropolitan Opera commission is a co-production of the Met and the English National Opera, which premiered the work in 2017. It will star Isabel Leonard in the title role, Christopher Maltman as Mark, counter-tenor Iestyn Davies as Terry, and Denyce Graves as Marnie’s mother. Marnie’s shifting identities are the focus of the plot; she is an enigma. Set in England in the late 1950s, the work is scored for a cast of 18 soloists, with a super-large orchestra augmented by piano, celesta, piccolo trumpet, and offstage percussion. These forces are all performing under the baton of Robert Spano.

James Conlon

Recovering a Musical Heritage Currently music director of the Los Angeles Opera and principal conductor of the RAI National Symphony of Turin, Italy, James Conlon has had an international career that has taken him to the Metropolitan Opera, the Paris Opera, the Rotterdam Philharmonic, the city of Cologne, and the Cincinnati May and Ravinia festivals – he was Ravinia’s music director from 2005 to 2015. A constant theme of his career has been the championing of composers silenced, imprisoned, or killed under the Third Reich; for these efforts he’s been recognized by the AntiDefamation League, Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, and the Zemlinsky Prize. We hope you can join us as Mr. Conlon leads us on an exploration of music from a lost generation – works forgotten in the shadows for decades. He’ll illuminate the stories and legacies of composers including Alexander von Zemlinsky, Franz Schreker, Victor Ullmann, and Erwin Schulhoff, in a special program to celebrate this rich, revived musical heritage.
