From the President & CEO
The Guide
Dear Member,
The Member Magazine for WTTW and WFMT Renée Crown Public Media Center 5400 North Saint Louis Avenue Chicago, Illinois 60625
Happy New Year! WFMT kicks off the decade with Saturday Morning Listener’s Choice, a new weekly family-friendly (all ages!) classical request and dedication show hosted by WFMT’s Maggie Clennon Reberg. On the premiere episode (January 4 at 8:00 am), Maggie welcomes two Chicago notables: renowned violinist Rachel Barton Pine and her young daughter (and budding violinist) Sylvia, and together, they will encourage listeners to weigh in (on wfmt.com, Facebook and Twitter, and via phone) with requests. And at 9:00 am, we debut another new program, Soundtrack, highlighting film, television, and video game music. On WTTW, January is a time of renewal as popular series return with new episodes of Check, Please! and Finding Your Roots. Of special note is a trio of new series: Jane Austen’s unfinished novel Sanditon, E.M. Forster’s Howards End, and the distinctly Freudian Vienna Blood – watch them all and follow our recaps on wttw.com. This month WFMT will mark Martin Luther King Day and the Lunar New Year with special programming, and will welcome back a series featuring Gustavo Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. And, on wfmt.com, we’ll share some warmhearted musical fun to chase the cold away, preview our new Saturday morning programming, and take you to the Chicago Cultural Center for new concerts. Thank you for choosing to spend January with us and for your support. Sincerely,
Sandra Cordova Micek President & CEO

Camilla Nylund
Live from the Metropolitan Opera: Der Rosenkavalier Sir Simon Rattle conducts this production of Strauss’ Viennese comedy, with Camilla Nylund as the Marschallin, Magdalena Kozena as Octavian, and bass Günther Groissböck as Baron Ochs. The setting is updated from the 18th century to the year 1911, the year the opera was first performed; thus, we see a Vienna only a few years from the cataclysm of World War I. A Chicago favorite, tenor Matthew Polenzani, makes a cameo appearance as the Italian Singer.

Live from the Metropolitan Opera: Wozzeck A new production of Alban Berg’s Wozzeck, regarded as one of the greatest operas of the 20th century, comes to us from the Met this month; also look for it in select theaters. The company’s music director, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, is the conductor with baritone Peter Mattei in the title role and Elza van der Heever in the role of Marie. In the Met’s words, Wozzeck was “a sensation and a scandal” at its 1925 Berlin premiere, following the life of an ordinary soldier, victimized by his superiors and deceived by his girlfriend, as he spirals inexorably toward madness and murder.

From the Metropolitan Opera: La Traviata Most of Giuseppe Verdi’s operas are set in long-ago, romanticized eras: the Middle Ages, even ancient Rome. A notable exception is La Traviata, first seen in Venice in 1853; its setting is Paris in the mid-19th century, based loosely on the life of an actual Parisian courtesan immortalized by Alexandre Dumas as “the lady of the camellias.” This Verdian operatic favorite returns to the Met in a production first mounted last season, with Aleksandra Kurzak as Violetta, Dmytro Popov as Alfredo, and Quinn Kelsey as the elder Germont.

From the Metropolitan Opera: La Bohème The Metropolitan Opera’s website bills Puccini’s La Bohème as “the world’s most popular opera.” Probably few would disagree. Last fall, the company presented it with Matthew Polenzani as the poet Rodolfo and Ailyn Perez as the flower-seller Mimi. We follow them through their romantic meeting, their Christmas Eve night on the town, their wintertime struggles, and Mimi’s final, fatal illness. Surrounding them are their friends with their own problems – the painter Marcello (David Bizic) and the singer-courtesan Musetta (Olga Kulchnska). Marco Armiliato conducts.
