Air Check Dear Member, Summer is in full swing here at WTTW and WFMT! Perhaps in response to our city’s famously harsh winters, the Chicago area truly comes alive at this time of year, with a multitude of outdoor entertainment options. As always, WFMT is proud to bring you a variety of live and recorded broadcasts featuring the very best the classical music world has to offer, including the Grant Park Music Festival from Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park, the Ravinia Festival, and the Rush Hour Concerts from St. James Cathedral in downtown Chicago. Whether you are in your home or out and about, you can enjoy this beautiful summer music wherever you are. Be sure to visit wfmt.com to stream the broadcasts and enjoy podcasts of your favorite series and new web stories from around the classical music world posted every day. WTTW11 kicks off the month of July as always with the nation’s starstudded Independence Day celebration, A Capitol Fourth, live from Washington, DC. We journey to Australia to explore the Great Barrier Reef and venture into the outback with Kangaroo Dundee as he saves the lives of orphaned joeys (kangaroo babies, at birth, are called joeys), and learn how advances in medicine are aiding in the treatment of ailing animals all over the world in a new three-part series, Operation Wild. On Saturday nights, we take you to Scotland for a new BBC detective series, Shetland, based on the novels by Ann Cleaves, as our popular British dramas – Last Tango in Halifax, Poldark, and The Crimson Field – continue on Sunday evenings. While we’re in the United Kingdom, take an exclusive look inside Asprey’s department store and Claridge’s Hotel. Back stateside, American Experience recalls the great New York City blackout of 1977 and Great Performances gives you front row seats to the Broadway production of Driving Miss Daisy with Angela Lansbury and James Earl Jones and a tribute to composer John Williams with Gustavo Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. As the world marks the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II, two programs focus on the atomic bomb and its repercussions, and we go, literally, out of this world for a unique view of Humanity from Space. On the digital front, WTTW presents the quirky and creative new local YouTube series, The Good Stuff. Each month we’ll post new videos on a different theme, and now available are four entertaining and enlightening new webisodes covering the mysteries of Sleep, with a new batch of videos on Robots coming soon. Check them out at wttw.com/goodstuff, and see what themes are coming up! In advance of Independence Day, WFMT launches American Music Week, highlighting both favorites and discoveries from the rich past and present of American musical creativity. Peter Van De Graaff and Suzanne Nance will host live broadcasts from the Grant Park Music Festival, including the annual Independence Day concert, a WFMT tradition, on the evening of July 4. Kerry Frumkin will be hosting broadcasts from the 2015 Ravinia Festival on Monday evenings throughout the summer. And on the operatic front, our series of rebroadcasts from Lyric Opera 2014-15 ends this month with Porgy and Bess and Tosca. Then the Los Angeles Opera takes over with its new radio season, beginning with La Traviata. Thank you for making WTTW and WFMT a part of your summer, and for your ongoing support. Sincerely,

Jason Gerace, Jeff-Award winning director, helms this funny, touching portrait of two people searching for happiness. Last Train to Nibroc begins in December 1940, as an east-bound cross-country train carryies the bodies of the great American writers Nathanael West and F. Scott Fitzgerald as well as passengers May and a charming young discharged flyer, Raleigh. As May and Raleigh continue to cross paths over the years, an unlikely bond forms, one that continues to blossom in ways neither of them could ever expect. American Music Week To honor the Independence Day holiday, WFMT will play music by American composers over seven days leading up to Saturday, July 4. Hosts and producers are planning a week that will feature both familiar favorites like Appalachian Spring and works that we hope will be new discoveries for our listeners – and perhaps for us, too. David Polk, WFMT’s program director, has invited the distinguished conductor Leonard Slatkin, a longtime champion of American music and musicians, to be an honorary curator for this project, and we’ll include Mr. Slatkin’s selections as part of each day. Visit wfmt.com for more information.

Paolo Pietropaolo

The Nerve! From the Third Coast International Audio Festival comes a six-part series about music and how it affects our brains, hosted by Paolo Pietropaolo. He says: “Consider music, if you will. Music! Beautiful, wonderful music, which can elevate your mood…or deplete it. That entire flurry of sensation boils down to wave patterns and neuro-chemical events. Not exactly romantic, perhaps, but endlessly fascinating, The Nerve, a six-part series from the CBC [Canadian Broadcasting Corporation], explores music and the brain, digging into exactly how and why we’re wired for sound.”

Wednesdays, beginning July 1, 11:00 pm

All prerecorded music on 98.7WFMT is provided by the Richard and Mary L. Gray Music Library.

Most live performances on 98.7WFMT are broadcast from the Fay and Daniel Levin Performance Studio.

Carnegie Hall Live Radio station WQXR offered live broadcasts from New York City’s venerable Carnegie Hall throughout the 2014-15 season. Now it’s joined the WFMT Radio Network in offering these performances as a summertime series of recorded live concerts. For July on WFMT, we start with an event from Carnegie’s Baroque Unlimited series, Richard Egarr and the Academy of Ancient Music playing Bach. Later, Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony are joined by violinist Gil Shaham playing Prokofiev. This concert also included Drift and Providence by Samuel Adams, who’ll be joining the Chicago Symphony in the fall of 2015 as a composer-in-residence. Carnegie Hall also presents a recital by baritone Thomas Hampson featuring music from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, and a recital of classicalera sonatas by pianist Andras Schiff.

Jenny Lin

Relevant Tones Welcomes Jenny Lin Pianist Jenny Lin has concertized extensively in the US, Europe, and the Far East. Born in Taiwan and raised in Vienna, she’s an alumna of the Vienna Hochschule für Musik and Baltimore’s Peabody Conservatory. Currently a resident of New York City, she teaches on the faculty of the 92nd St “Y.” Lin is a versatile performer who plays Romantic and contemporary piano music, often crossing over into arrangements of Broadway show tunes and pop songs. According to Relevant Tones host Seth Boustead, “She’s recorded with jazz musicians, rockers, contemporary composers and everyone in between. Equally comfortable playing Shostakovich on the same concert as giving a world premiere, Lin is a vital talent [who] is taking concert halls by storm.”

Spektral Quartet

Rush Hour Concerts: Spektral Live Founded in 2010, the Spektral Quartet has established itself as one of Chicago’s most innovative and forward-thinking chamber ensembles. The players seek out the discourse between masterworks of the traditional canon and pieces written this decade, this year, or this week. One way they do this is through a Sampler Pack concert format. For these performances, shorter works and single movements are curated in a setlist containing a menagerie of musical styles, spanning centuries. One of these Sampler Packs – Haydn, Arvo Pärt, and David Reminick – is slated for a July Rush Hour concert. Dave Schwan hosts these broadcasts live from St James Episcopal Cathedral.

Contempo on the Air Contempo, the University of Chicago Presents’ renowned contemporarymusic series, celebrated 50 years during the 2014-15 concert season (the ensemble was founded by Ralph Shapey in 1964 as the Contemporary Chamber Players). To celebrate half a century, the group focused on music by internationally acclaimed composers, the University of Chicago’s composition students, and contemporary-music performers of the highest caliber. According to artistic director Shulamit Ran: “Bracing, stimulating, uplifting, haunting, spiritual, disturbing, absorbing…and beautiful, too. These are just a few words that spring to mind as I try to describe the best in today’s new music. It is the Contempo vision.” Conductor Cliff Colnot, the Pacifica Quartet, and eighth blackbird are all part of the Contempo ensemble. In-concert recordings from this past season will be featured on WFMT beginning in mid-July; Kerry Frumkin is the host and producer.

Nino Machaidze

LA Opera on Air Returns Six productions from the Los Angeles Opera are being syndicated by the WFMT Radio Network this summer. Starring in the first, Verdi’s La Traviata, is soprano Nino Machaidze, who made her debut with the company in 2009 in The Elixir of Love. Other operas in which she has starred at houses all across Europe include Romeo and Juliet, Lucia di Lammermoor, and The Daughter of the Regiment. She’ll be singing the title role in Massenet’s Thais to conclude the LA Opera radio season in August. Our second broadcast from Los Angeles will be a double bill of Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas and Bartok’s Bluebeard’s Castle. The company then embarks on a Figaro trilogy for early August: Rossini’s Barber of Seville, Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro, and The Ghosts of Versailles by John Corigliano.

Renaud Capuçon

Chicago Symphony Orchestra Radio Broadcasts Violinist Renaud Capuçon and cellist Gautier Capuçon perform Brahms’ Double Concerto with the Chicago Symphony under guest conductor Osmo Vänskä. Renaud (b 1976) entered Paris’ Conservatoire National Supérieur at the age of 14, subsequently performing in the European Union Youth Orchestra and the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra under the direction of Claudio Abbado. He has performed and organized chamber-music concerts in addition to appearing internationally as a concert soloist and recording artist. His violin is a Guarnerius that once belonged to Isaac Stern. His brother, Gautier, was born in 1981 and also studied at the Conservatoire Supérieur. He followed Renaud into the European Union and Gustav Mahler ensembles before launching his solo career. It’s perhaps not unusual that the brothers often perform together. Gautier is also a pianist – he especially enjoys jazz piano – but his principal instrument remains the cello. He plays a Goffriller cello from 1701, about which he says: “It is an instrument that you really need to know [emphasis added] to be able to play…so in a way, on the Goffriller, I probably search more and look more for different things.”
