WTTW, in partnership with the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events, presents a free screening and discussion about Whose Streets? – an official selection in the 2017 Sundance Film Festival. When unarmed teenager Michael Brown is killed by police and left lying in the street for hours, it marks a breaking point for the residents of St. Louis, Missouri. Music of America
In July, host Bill McGlaughlin features sounds from South America on It Takes Two to Tango. He’ll look at the wider world of Spanish and Spanish-inspired music with a week devoted to España.
Beginning with Carl Grapentine’s July 4 morning program, and culminating with the Grant Park Music Festival’s Independence Day salute, we’ll feature music by American composers, and music about America, all day on Independence Day.

David Daniels
From the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival The new broadcast season from Santa Fe encompasses performances from the summer of 2017, during which countertenor David Daniels, violinist Rachel Barton Pine, and the Anderson-Roe piano duo all made festival debuts. Daniels’ performances will be featured on four broadcasts, including the opening one, whereon he sings Handel; the series finale, in late September, will find him singing Vivaldi’s Stabat Mater. Also to be heard during the July sequence will be pianists Inon Barnatan and Jon Kimura Parker and violinist Daniel Hope. The July programs contain trios by Mendelssohn, Dvorak, and Brahms; quartets by Beethoven and Schumann; and a quintet by Elliott Carter, as well as rarely heard songs by British composer Frank Bridge. The Finnish conductor and violinist John Storgards will be the soloist in another rarity, the Concerto for Violin and Wind Orchestra by Kurt Weill. Hosting the broadcasts will be Kerry Frumkin, in company with the festival’s artistic director, pianist-composer Marc Neikrug. Louise Frank is the producer.

Emily Bear
Live from the Grant Park Music Festival: A Holiday and A Movie Night Christopher Bell, dressed as Uncle Sam, will lead the Grant Park Music Festival’s annual Independence Day Salute from Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park. The concert will feature lots of American-music favorites, including Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue with 16-year-old pianist Emily Bear as the soloist. Bell plans to surround the rhapsody with marches and patriotic medleys, as well as the traditional addition of Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture. Dave Schwan will host WFMT’s live broadcast, and will also be on hand to host Music of the Silver Screen the following week. The Grant Park Orchestra will play symphonic highlights from film scores including An American in Paris, Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Adventures of Robin Hood, Citizen Kane, and Ben Hur.

In the Spotlight
Christina Pluhar
From Carnegie Hall The name ‘Carnegie Hall’ has conjured up memories of legendary performances for decades. Radio station WQXR in New York City has assembled some more recent concerts, from the 2017-18 Carnegie season, for broadcast nationwide. The series begins with the opening-night gala from last October, with Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the Philadelphia Orchestra launching its year-long Leonard Bernstein centenary celebration by playing the Symphonic Dances from West Side Story and a film suite from On the Waterfront. In between, a rare two-piano version of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue features Chick Corea and Lang Lang, the latter assisted by one of his students, Maxim Lando. The following week, the period-instruments group L’Arpeggiata will feature little-known vocal and instrumental music of the early Italian Baroque, led by Christina Pluhar playing a theorbo, a lute with an extraordinarly long neck. Called La Lyra d’Orfeo (Orpheus’ Lute), the program features works by Luigi Rossi, a younger contemporary of Monteverdi. Also this month we’ll hear the Takacs Quartet with two of their colleagues from the University of Boulder, where the quartet serves as ensemble-in-residence, and a highly-anticipated appearance by pianist Martha Argerich, playing Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3 with the Santa Cecilia Orchestra of Rome. On this program the orchestra also plays Respighi’s Pines of Rome and Fountains of Rome, plus a rousing encore in the shape of Rossini’s William Tell Overture.
Thursdays, throughout the month, 10:00 pm Polka – Vladimir Ashkenazy, p. London B0001846-02. [10:14] Robert Schumann Genoveva Overture – London Sym/Neeme Järvi. Chandos CHAN-8595. [9:11] 22

From Lyric Opera: Recent Season Highlights To conclude the nationally-syndicated series of broadcasts from Lyric Opera of Chicago, hear two outstanding productions from the company’s recent seasons. Wagner’s Das Rheingold opened Lyric’s 2016-17 season and also launched its new production of the Ring Cycle, which continues into the 2019-20 season. Eric Owens stars in the role of Wotan. In 2015-16, Lyric presented the world premiere of Jimmy Lopez’s Bel Canto, based on the Ann Patchett novel of the same name and set in South America during a hostage standoff. Danielle de Niese stars as Roxane, an internationally-celebrated soprano who is suddenly caught up in a political crisis over which she has no control. The production of this new opera was curated by Renée Fleming, Lyric’s creative consultant.

Kristine Opolais
Opera from the BBC Hear summertime opera performances from the British Isles recorded by the British Broadcasting Corporation. Verdi’s Un Ballo in Maschera (A Masked Ball) was first performed in Rome in 1859, with a plot cast into implausibility by the fears of censors. Originally based on a French play about the murder of King Gustavus of Sweden, the work was transplanted to colonial New England so audiences wouldn’t be exposed to any images of regicide. Modern-day performances, like this one from Great Britain’s Opera North, restore the original Swedish names and settings of the story. Wagner’s Lohengrin, starring Kristine Opolais as Elsa and conducted by Andris Nelsons, comes from the Royal Opera House of Covent Garden. First performed in the German city of Weimar in 1850 under the direction of Franz Liszt, Lohengrin has a libretto by Wagner himself based on medieval legends about the Holy Grail. The knight Lohengrin is the son of Parsifal, king of the Grail knights, and miraculously comes to the defense of Elsa, accused of murdering her brother to usurp the throne of Brabant. Lohengrin is sung by tenor Klaus Florian Vogt, and portraying Ortrud, a sorceress scheming to make her husband the ruler of Brabant, is Christine Goerke.
