From the President & CEO Dear Member, This month, WTTW celebrates the 50th anniversary of NASA’s first landing on the moon with Summer of Space, a multiplatform celestial experience anchored by the highly anticipated six-hour film Chasing the Moon, along with a slate of new programs that explore different aspects of space exploration. On wttw.com, take a deep dive into the wild world of lunar landing conspiracy theories, and learn how China, India, Japan, and other countries are approaching space exploration. WFMT will mark the occasion with some moon-related music and a special space-related edition of Arias and Songs with Larry Johnson. Join us all month as we recall this seminal event in American history. Also in July, in addition to our annual Independence Day broadcast of A Capitol Fourth, WTTW Kids brings you Molly of Denali, a new series for children aged 4-8 and the first national children’s series to feature a Native American lead character. Kids and families can watch Molly on weekdays on WTTW11, on our 24/7 kids channel, and any time on our website at wttw.com/kids. On WFMT, enjoy the annual live Independence Day Salute, plus subsequent performances featuring Stephen Hough and Yolanda Kondonassis. And don’t miss the new season of Carnegie Hall concerts, including Mahler from the Boston Symphony, Berlioz from L’Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique, and more. Enjoy summer in Chicago, and thanks for your support. Sincerely,
Sandra Cordova Micek President & CEO

Chasing the Moon: American Experience This new three-part film thoroughly reimagines the race to the moon for a new generation, upending much of the conventional mythology surrounding the effort. With no narration and using only archival footage – including a visual feast of previously lost or overlooked material – the film features new interviews with a diverse cast of characters who played key roles in these historic events. As Chasing the Moon reveals, the drive to land a man on the moon was fueled as much by politics as it was by technology, and was a controversial undertaking during a volatile time.

Each episode sees the enigmatic priest investigate a crime in his own particular way, using intuition and psychology. Many years spent hearing his parishioners’ confessions have given him an uncanny insight into the origins of evil and the workings of the criminal mind.

Windborne: A Folk Quartet
Our final operas from London’s Royal Opera House, Britten’s Billy Budd and Giordano’s Andrea Chenier, were both acclaimed for their excellent casts, especially Sondra Radvanovsky as Maddalena in Chenier. Also coming from Radio Italiana: a Rossini rarity, Adina, and Gluck’s timeless Orfeo ed Euridice.
Honoring Independence Day, Elbio Barilari presents music reflecting the American experience in all its nuances, by composers who’ve emigrated here from Latin America. He’ll also welcome composer-performer Paquito D’Rivera for conversation and music.
The Windborne singers perform music spanning many continents and cultures, but they’re rooted in the American folk tradition. Hear them live from WFMT’s Levin Studio on their way to the Woodstock Folk Festival.

Astronauts, Apollo 11
Holidays and Observances From Dvorak’s Song to the Moon to The Planets by Gustav Holst, there’s a lot of music that evokes celestial spaces. We’ll be playing pieces on moon or outer-space themes here and there during July as a lead-up to the 50th anniversary, on Saturday, July 20, of the Apollo 11 moon landing. Larry Johnson will help us celebrate on a special hourlong edition of Arias and Songs, sharing moon music from both the classical and the popular realms. And for the July holidays: American music on Independence Day, and some music by French composers to honor Bastille Day.

Sir John Eliot Gardiner
L’Orchestre Revolutionnaire et Romantique at Carnegie Hall This ensemble was founded in 1989 by its current conductor, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, aiming to perform music of the early 19th century on period instruments in a historically informed style. Sir John and the Revolutionnaire musicians bring an all-Berlioz program to Carnegie Hall to honor the 150th anniversary of the composer’s death. Mezzo-soprano Lucile Richardot will perform the dramatic vocal scene called The Death of Cleopatra, plus excerpts from Berlioz’s epic opera The Trojans. The evening concludes with Harold in Italy, Berlioz’s viola concerto inspired by the poetry of Lord Byron; Antoine Tamestit is the soloist.

Yolanda Kondonassis
Yolanda Kondonassis at the Grant Park Music Festival Alberto Ginastera (1916-1983) was a prominent voice in the musical life of his native Argentina, but also had close ties with the U.S.; his colorful and virtuosic Harp Concerto was premiered by the Philadelphia Orchestra under Eugene Ormandy, with Nicanor Zabaleta as the soloist. It had been intended for the artist who commissioned it, harpist Edna Phillips, the first woman to play in the Philadelphia Orchestra, but the work’s composition stretched out over several years, and Zabaleta was ultimately the soloist to perform it first, in 1965. This Grant Park Music Festival live concert will find Yolanda Kondonassis playing Ginastera’s music, plus Emmanuel Villaume conducting two French classics: the Suite No. 2 from Ravel’s Daphnis and Chloe and Bizet’s Symphony in C.

Hough in Beethoven at Pritzker Pavilion July’s third live broadcast from the Grant Park Music Festival, at Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park, will feature the distinguished pianist Stephen Hough in Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3. The English-born guest conductor Martyn Brabbins will surround the concerto with music from the British Isles. Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Symphony No. 2, London, is meant to evoke the sounds of busy London streets; it includes an echo of the Westminster Chimes that sound from the famous clock tower called Big Ben. It dates from 1914. Composed in 2006 was Scottish composer James MacMillan’s Stomp (with Fate and Elvira), a short concert opener that incorporates themes from Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4 and the Mozart piano concerto that’s sometimes called Elvira Madigan from its use in that film.

Gioachino Rossini
From Pesaro’s Rossini Opera Festival The festival was founded in 1980 in the composer’s home town of Pesaro, Italy. In the summer of 2018 it performed one very well-known Rossini work, The Barber of Seville, plus Armida and Il Signor Bruschino, not quite so familiar, and a couple of complete rarities, including Adina. This is a short work with some similarities to Mozart’s comedy The Abduction from the Seraglio: a European heroine dealing with an ardent suitor from the Middle East, though she prefers (and is ultimately united with) a lover of her own choice. Diego Matheuz conducts the vocal soloists and the Gioachino Rossini Symphony. Adina is being presented in partnership with the European Broadcasting Union and RAI, Radio Italiana.

Conrad Tao
MacDowell, Shostakovich, Copland from Grant Park
Carlos Kalmar will be back at Pritzker Pavilion for July’s last festival concert, which features the 25-year-old virtuoso Conrad Tao in the Piano Concerto No. 2 by Dmitri Shostakovich. Shostakovich wrote the work, more serene and lighthearted than a lot of his other music, for his son Maxim, who in 1957 was a teenage student at the Moscow Conservatory. Maxim premiered it at the conservatory. The orchestra is a small one: winds including horns, percussion, and strings. The concert opens with Edward MacDowell’s Indian Suite, for which the composer borrowed themes from an 1890s book by Theodore Baker, On the Music of the North American Indians. Today these themes are regarded as Westernized and not exactly authentic: not, in other words, truly traditional Native American music. MacDowell’s touch with lyrical melodic writing, however, turns the five-movement suite into a most pleasurable outing that perhaps should be heard more often. Kalmar ends the evening with Four Dance Episodes from Aaron Copland’s ballet Rodeo. Dave Schwan is WFMT’s host. He’ll be back in August with two more GPMF specials.
