Air Check Dear Member, Some of our most popular programming is from “across the pond,” and in June, we’ll bring the Anglophiles in our audience a lot of new material – The Great British Baking Show and Masterpiece favorite Grantchester return with new seasons, and we welcome to our schedule three new series: The Coroner, My Mother and Other Strangers, and a time-bending incarnation of Prime Suspect that introduces us to a young Jane Tennison as she is just starting out as a detective in 1973. Also on WTTW11 this month, we bring you this year’s Golden Apple Awards for Excellence in Teaching, hosted by Brandis Friedman, this year honoring 10 outstanding 4th-8th grade educators and one school principal. We air the 76th Annual Peabody Awards that annually recognize the year’s best stories in television, radio, and digital media. We also share a rare gem: the JFK Inaugural Gala from January 1961 – an all-star performance that never aired…until now; and present new concerts by Johnny Mathis, Paul Simon, and the band Journey. We reveal The Story of China, take you on a journey to the Big Pacific, and experience The Great Yellowstone Thaw. Finally, the new film Free to Rock, narrated by Kiefer Sutherland, explores how rock ‘n’ roll may just have been instrumental in bringing an end to the Cold War. On wttw.com’s Playlist (wttw.com/playlist), get ready for the premiere of the new epic The Story of China with an interview with writer/host Michael Woods and producer/ director Rebecca Dobbs; and hear from the directors of the new American Epic series, who explain how early American recording artists changed music forever. Also, visit wttw.com/myneighborhood throughout the month for new stories about the people and places in the Chicago Southwest Side neighborhood of Pilsen. WFMT is partnering this summer with the 2017 Grant Park Music Festival for 10 live broadcasts from Pritzker Pavilion at Millennium Park. Dave Schwan will host the broadcasts, which begin with Vadim Gluzman playing Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto. We’re continuing with rebroadcasts from Lyric Opera’s 2016-17 season. And on the third Monday of the month, we’ll present another WFMT Classical Cabaret live from the Chopin Theater. Also this month, WFMT is proud to present KAIA String Quartet as its first ensemble in residence. Victoria Moreira (violin), Naomi Culp (violin), Amanda Grimm (viola), and Hope Shepherd DeCelle (cello) are devoted to capturing the essence of Latin American culture through the medium of the string quartet. Though July 2017, KAIA takes you on a musical journey throughout Latin America with daily segments, live broadcasts, and exclusive digital content. Listen weekdays at 9:05 am and 6:00 pm to explore the music of Mexico, Venezuela, Uruguay, Brazil, Puerto Rico, Colombia, Cuba, Central America, and Argentina. Enjoy each segment again after it airs by visiting wfmt.com/kaia. Don’t miss the first two videos in a new series about the music of Latin America that’s fun for all ages. As we approach the end of another fiscal year, my thank you, on behalf of all of us and WTTW and WFMT, for your continuing support. Sincerely,

Dan Schmidt President & CEO

Arias and Songs: Gay Pride Weekend

Three Generations, a Carnegie Hall series curated by Steve Reich, explores ongoing musical evolutions. This performance spotlights three pioneers. On the program: Arvo Pärt’s Für Alina and Fratres, a Philip Glass quartet, and Reich’s Different Trains.

Early last November, an audience jubilant from the Cubs’ World Series victory also rejoiced when James Levine returned to conduct the Chicago Symphony in Orchestra Hall: Mozart, Schoenberg, and Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique.

Larry Johnson presents a one-hour special featuring gay and lesbian composers and singers who’ve made major contributions to American and European culture: from Poulenc to Cole Porter, from Peter Pears to David Daniels and Patricia Racette.

Trojans Storm Civic Opera House! A highlight of Lyric Opera’s 2016-17 season was the company’s premiere performance of Berlioz’s Les Troyens, in a new production. This five-hour epic was never presented live during the composer’s lifetime, and even today is a rarity on operatic stages because of the formidable forces required to mount it. The opera recounts the fall of Troy to the armies of Greece, and the escape of the Trojan survivors, who first take refuge in the North African city of Carthage, then continue on to settle in Italy and become the founding forerunners of the Roman Empire. Lyric’s production won particular praise for its three principal singers: soprano Christine Goerke as Cassandra, the Trojan princess who predicts the city’s downfall but whose prophecies are doomed to be ignored; tenor Brandon Jovanovich as Aeneas, leader of the Trojan emigrés, who is strongly tempted to ignore his historic destiny in Italy and stay in Carthage instead; and mezzo-soprano Susan Graham as Dido, the queen of Carthage who falls in love with Aeneas but is cruelly deserted in the end. Sir Andrew Davis is the conductor; Lisa Flynn and Roger Pines co-host WFMT’s rebroadcast.

Ferruccio Furlanetto

Don Quixote de la Mancha at Lyric! Jules Massenet’s opera Don Quichotte was written to star the legendary Russian basso Feodor Chaliapin. In our time the role has been assumed by such notable bass singers as Nicolai Ghiaurov, Samuel Ramey – and last fall at Lyric, Ferruccio Furlanetto, who has also portrayed Don Quixote to great acclaim at opera houses internationally. Massenet’s treatment of Cervantes’ Knight of the Woeful Countenance shows him as a caring and lovable person, not a figure of fun; he’s treated very sympathetically, especially in the opera’s final scene. Joining Furlanetto and conductor Sir Andrew Davis are Clémentine Margaine as Dulcinea and Nicola Alaimo as Sancho Panza.

Sir Andras Schiff

Sir Andras Schiff at Gilmore Schiff, born in Hungary in 1953, was recognized during the 1970s in both the Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition and the Leeds International Pianoforte Competition. In addition to his career as a solo pianist and recording artist, he’s conducted several major orchestras and been active as a chamber musician. In concert and on recordings, he’s especially admired for his interpretations of Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, and Schumann. This foremost classical pianist of our time was a recent guest at Michigan’s Gilmore International Keyboard Festival. The festival kindly made his all-Schubert recital available for broadcast on WFMT: two sonatas, Four Impromptus D 935, and Three Piano Pieces D 946. Kerry Frumkin hosts.

Grant Park Music Festival: Live from Pritzker Pavilion Carlos Kalmar returns to conduct his Grant Park Orchestra in another season filled with musical discoveries at the country’s only free outdoor classical summer concert series. If you can’t make it to Millennium Park for opening night, join Dave Schwan hosting a live broadcast that will start, appropriately enough, with Festival Overture by the Swedish composer Hugo Alfven. Kalmar continues with some symphonic favorites: Robert Russell Bennett’s Symphonic Picture of Porgy and Bess and Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto with guest soloist Vadim Gluzman. Gluzman is well known to Chicago audiences as both a recitalist and an orchestral soloist. Raised in Latvia and Israel, he studied at New York’s Juilliard School and received encouragement and support from Isaac Stern. His violin has a story attached: a 1690 Stradivarius on loan from the Stradivari Society of Chicago, it’s called the Ex-Leopold Auer after its previous owner, a famous violinist and influential teacher of the late 19th century.

Lyric’s New Magic Flute A new production in 2016-17 of Mozart’s opera The Magic Flute moves the work’s setting to a suburban back yard, where children are staging the show using homemade props and Disney-inspired costumes. Lyric Opera of Chicago engaged a stellar cast for this imaginative re-staging, headed by Matthew Polenzani as Prince Tamino and Christiane Karg as his beloved, Pamina, both of whom must endure several trials before being united with the blessing of the wise Sarastro. Singled out for special criticial recognition was soprano Kathryn Lewek, making her company debut in the challenging role of the Queen of the Night. Adam Plachetka provides comic relief in the role of the bird-catcher, Papageno. The conductor was Rory Macdonald, and once again Lisa Flynn and Roger Pines will co-host our rebroadcast.

Riccardo Muti

Muti, the Chicago Symphony, and Bruckner The CSO season opener for 2016-17 found Riccardo Muti conducting Mussorgsky’s Night on Bald Mountain, Strauss’s tone poem Don Juan, and the Symphony #7 in E by Anton Bruckner. Premiered in 1884 in the German city of Leipzig, this symphony was the composer’s first major public success, and its subsequent performances in other Central European musical centers made his name at last well known after decades of obscurity. The Symphony #7 is the first orchestral work to employ the Wagner tuba, an instrument developed for opera-house use. There’s a further Wagnerian connection in that Bruckner, a fervent admirer of his older colleague, conceived the secondmovement Adagio as a memorial to Wagner, who died in 1883 while the symphony was being written.

Jordi Savall

From Carnegie Hall: Venice and the Eastern Mediterranean in Music During the 2016-17 season, Carnegie Hall mounted a special series on the theme of La Serenissima, celebrating the enormous artistic importance of the city of Venice over many centuries. The festival included a staging of Monteverdi’s opera L’incoronazione de Poppea, premiered in Venice in the 17th century when opera was new. It also included a concert led by early-music maven Jordi Savall, which traced the history of music associated with Venice and the Eastern Mediterranean from the Middle Ages until the late 18th century. There’s more Monteverdi on this concert: his operatic scene Il Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda, based on stories from the era of the First Crusade. Singers and instrumentalists explore a wide variety of music that evokes not only Venice but also the long-lost days of the Byzantine and Ottoman empires. The performers include Savall’s own groups, Hesperion XXI and Le Concert des Nations, plus the Orthodox-Byzantine Vocal Ensemble and La Capella Reial de Catalunya.

Grant Park 2017: Firebird and More WFMT’s second live broadcast from the 2017 Grant Park Music Festival finds Carlos Kalmar conducting a complete performance of Stravinsky’s ballet The Firebird. The concert opens with a piece by West Coast composer David Schiff entitled Infernal, based on a familiar section of the ballet, The Infernal Dance of the Demon Katschei. Schiff wrote this originally for the Seattle Symphony, and has called it a twofold homage, to Stravinsky and to Henry Mancini. Rounding out this concert will be Khachaturian’s Piano Concerto, with youthful soloist Conrad Tao.

Lyric Opera’s Norma Vincenzo Bellini’s opera Norma, set in the remote past of Romans and Druids in ancient Gaul, is a high point from the early 19th-century era of bel canto singing. The title role is considered a special challenge for any soprano; it’s been notably undertaken in modern times by Maria Callas and Dame Joan Sutherland. A foremost contemporary portrayer of the Druid priestess is soprano Sondra Radvanovsky, who performed it at Lyric earlier this year. The Italian conductor Riccardo Frizza made his Lyric debut in this production. Featured alongside Radvanovsky was Ryan Opera Center alumna Elizabeth DeShong in the role of Adalgisa, Norma’s rival for the love of the Roman commander Pollione. The love triangle is one element of the plot; another is Norma’s conflicted loyalties, between the safety and welfare of her own subjugated people and her love for the leader of the Roman conquerors. Norma is this month’s final Lyric presentation; the series will continue on Saturdays in July.

Grant Park 2017: Sierra’s Mass Completed in 2005, Puerto Rican composer Roberto Sierra’s Missa Latina is subtitled Pro Pace: For Peace. It was premiered in 2006 at the Kennedy Center by the National Symphony and the Washington Choral Arts Society under the direction of Leonard Slatkin, and has also been performed at the Casals Festival and by the symphonies of Honolulu, Houston, and Milwaukee. This summer it comes to Millennium Park, where the Grant Park Orchestra and its chorus will be guest-conducted by Miguel Harth-Bedoya, with soprano soloist Jessica Rivera. The Mass sets seven liturgical passages: Introit, Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Offertorium, Sanctus, and Agnus Dei. Once again, Dave Schwan will host WFMT’s live broadcast.
