From the President & CEO Dear Member, Sesame Street premiered on WTTW at 9:00 am on November 10, 1969. 50 years and counting, we are celebrating this colorful community of monsters, birds, grouches, and humans all year long – beginning with an all-day outdoor festival featuring a character stage show, activities, meet and greets, and more. You’ll find details inside. Also, look out for special content on television, and our social and digital platforms. WTTW will celebrate LGBT Pride Month with relevant content including a new American Masters profile of playwright Terrence McNally, and two documentaries – The Lavender Scare, a history of the gay community’s fight for civil rights, and POV: The Gospel of Eureka, about an Arkansas town building bridges between religious faith and sexual orientation. On wttw.com, uncover Chicago’s LGBT history; mark the centennial of the Treaty of Versailles and the 75th anniversary of D-Day; and recap the new season of Endeavour. WFMT will be out and about all summer long. Come see us at the Grant Park Music Festival in June featuring concerts with violinists Benjamin Beilman and Augustin Hadelich and pianist Inon Barnatan. We’ll take you behind the scenes at Pritzker Pavilion with music, interviews, and more on wfmt.com and Facebook Live. And, we’ll have a special feature spotlighting father-child musical duos on Father’s Day. Enjoy summer with WTTW and WFMT, and thank you for your support. Sincerely,
Sandra Cordova Micek President & CEO

2-for-1 Tickets to A Soldier’s Tale, A Fiddler’s Tale
Rembrandt Chamber Musicians
The season finale revisits Rembrandt Chamber Musicians’ acclaimed 2012 pairing of Stravinsky’s L’Histoire du soldat with A Fiddler’s Tale by Wynton Marsalis. Based on the Russian folk tale The Runaway Soldier and the Devil, L’Histoire tells the story of a soldier who sells his fiddle to the devil in exchange for material wealth, losing his fiancée and musical abilities in the process. Inspired by Stravinsky’s L’Histoire, A Fiddler’s Tale is a jazz suite that narrates the cautionary tale of a young female violinist who is lured into performing more commercialized music by the devil, a record executive with the initials B.Z.B. Rembrandt will be joined by Chicago-based comedian, author, and public radio personality Aaron Freeman for this special performance. For 2-for-1 admission, please visit rembrandtchamberplayers.org/events and use code FMTFIDDLER19 at checkout. The performance takes place on Sunday, June 2 at 3:00 pm at the Nichols Concert Hall, Music Institute of Chicago, 1490 Chicago Avenue in Evanston.

Wagner from London’s Royal Opera House Like the Metropolitan Opera, during the 2018-19 season the Royal Opera House mounted a complete performance of Richard Wagner’s Ring cycle. Two of the Ring musicdramas, Die Walküre and Siegfried, appear during the June sequence of Saturday-afternoon operas from the ROH. A name that may be new to U.S. listeners is that of bassbaritone John Lundgren, who portrays Wotan in both works (in Siegfried, he’s called the Wanderer). Lundgren was born in Sweden and trained in Copenhagen, where he’s performed many times at the Royal Danish Theatre. In addition to traditional baritone roles, he’s also made many appearances in contemporary operas. The ROH’s Brünnhilde is soprano Nina Stemme, Emily Magee sings the role of Sieglinde, and the Siegfried will be tenor Stefan Vinke; Sir Antonio Pappano is the conductor. British media cited both operas for their strong casting and outstanding vocal interpretations.

Benjamin Beilman
Unveiling the 2019 Grant Park Music Festival When Carlos Kalmar raises his baton to open this year’s festival in Pritzker Pavilion at Millennium Park, WFMT’s Dave Schwan will be on hand to announce the first piece: Jubilation by Ellen Taaffe Zwilich, who wrote it for the opening of a new concert hall at the University of Georgia and has called it a kind of smallscale concerto for orchestra. Then Western Springs native Benjamin Beilman will join the Grant Park Orchestra to play Prokofiev’s virtuosic Violin Concerto No. 1. First-prize winner at the 2010 Young Concert Artists International Auditions and the Montreal International Musical Competition, Beilman received an Avery Fisher Career Grant two years later. His concert appearances have taken him to Europe and Australia, as well as all over this country, both as a concerto soloist and as a member of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. After the concerto, the Pritzker audience and listeners to WFMT, the wfmt.com stream, and the WFMT app can hear one of Tchaikovsky’s leastknown symphonies, No. 2 in C Minor.

A Verdi Rarity from the Royal Opera House Giuseppe Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra is one of his least-heard works. The rather convoluted and melodramatic plot could possibly have something to do with this circumstance, but for listeners experiencing the work outside the actual opera house, there’s a great deal of beautiful music to enjoy. This performance from London’s Royal Opera House features veteran bass Ferruccio Furlanetto, who in the role of Jacopo Fiesco gets the score’s first big highlight, the aria “Il lacerato spirito.” The title role is taken by Spanish baritone Carlos Alvarez, who has a moving duet with the Armenian soprano Hrachuhi Bassenz in the role of Amelia, Boccanegra’s long-lost daughter. By herself, Amelia has a lyrical aria to open Act 1, “Come in quest’ora bruna.” There’s lots more throughout the prologue and three acts, including a major presence for the chorus. The actual Boccanegra was the first Doge (Duke) of Genoa during the 14th century, and the plot is (loosely) based on the plots and counterplots that surrounded him.

Armchair Traveling with Bill McGlaughlin Bill promises sounds from composers’ backyards plus works that document their voyages to distant lands, as Exploring Music embarks on a two-week series under the title Ports of Call. This is the English translation of Escales by Jacques Ibert, which is one of many pieces Bill will feature. Ibert’s piece gives us musical impressions of Mediterranean ports he visited during his career in the French Navy. Likewise, Ottorino Respighi wrote Brazilian Impressions to reflect the sounds and colors he experienced during a South American visit. There are lots more examples from the music of the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries; we hope you can tune in and catch some of them. NOTE: on June 19 and 21, the program will air at 9:00 pm.

Inon Barnatan
Weber, Mozart, and Busoni from Grant Park Inon Barnatan is an Israeli-American pianist whose recital and concert appearances have won him international recognition ever since he received an Avery Fisher Career Grant in 2009. Five years later, he became the first Artist in Association with the New York Philharmonic. His 2012 CD Darknesse Visible attracted a good deal of critical acclaim: its title work is a composition by Thomas Ades based on a song by John Dowland, and it also features Ravel’s haunting Gaspard de la Nuit. Barnatan’s home base is New York City, but he’ll be in Chicago this month to play a favorite Mozart piano concerto, No. 23 in A Major, with Carlos Kalmar and the Grant Park Orchestra. The concert will open with Weber’s Preciosa Overture. Ferruccio Busoni (1866-1924) was a composer and pianist perhaps best remembered today for his Bach keyboard transcriptions, but he also wrote for the stage and for orchestra, including a Symphonic Suite that will conclude the program. Dave Schwan hosts WFMT’s live broadcast.

Stacy Garrop
Stacy Garrop World Premiere at Grant Park The Grant Park Music Festival commissioned Garrop to write a new piece celebrating Carlos Kalmar’s 20th anniversary as its principal conductor. Inspired by the idea of rebirth and renewal, she turned to images of the Hindu god Shiva in his role as Lord of the Dance. She sees Shiva as performing a cosmic dance to allow a new world to emerge. The work has four sections, using a large orchestra to evoke sunset, the Cosmic Dance in the middle of the night, Shiva’s pre-dawn contemplation of the new universe, and finally sunrise on a new day. At Pritzker Pavilion, Kalmar will follow Shiva Dances with the exuberant Symphony No. 1 by Dmitri Shostakovich. To conclude, Augustin Hadelich will perform a favorite work of the symphonic repertory, the Violin Concerto in D Major by Brahms. Hadelich – like the other Grant Park soloists in June – won an Avery Fisher Career Grant (2009). He was named Instrumentalist of the Year by Musical America in 2018, and won a 2016 Grammy award for his recording of L’Arbre des Songes, a violin concerto by Henri Dutilleux, with the Seattle Symphony. Once more, it’ll be Dave Schwan hosting our live broadcast from Millennium Park.

Jonas Kaufmann and Anna Netrebko
Verdi Classic from London Anna Netrebko sings Leonora and Jonas Kaufmann is her doomed lover, Don Alvaro, in La Forza del Destino from the Royal Opera House. One of Verdi’s great successes, not long after the triumphs of Rigoletto, Il Trovatore, and La Traviata, Forza was first performed not in one of the Italian opera houses but in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1862. It’s set in Seville in the 18th century, and if some of the other operas on June Saturdays have had melodramatic and complicated plots, this one certainly deserves to be in their company. But it’s also a highly colorful and action-filled piece, contrasting Spanish nobility with soldiers and gypsies to present a vibrant atmosphere surrounding the main story of revenge for perceived wrongs. There’s a gypsy, Preziosilla, who recruits soldiers with rousing songs, and two very different clergymen: the wise Padre Guardiano (Ferruccio Furlanetto) and the somewhat clueless Fra Melitone, played by Alessandro Corbelli, whom Lyric Opera-goers will recall for his comic appearances in Chicago. Highlights of the score include the striking overture, the tenor-baritone duets, and Leonora’s heartfelt prayers, including “Pace, pace, mio Dio.”
