From the President & CEO Dear Member, At WTTW and WFMT, we believe that diversity, equity, and inclusion are fundamental to a functioning society and to our purpose of enriching lives, engaging communities, and inspiring exploration. In June, one expression of these values is our celebration of LGBTQ+ Pride Month with new and special content all month long. On WTTW, don’t miss the new American Masters: Ballerina Boys, profiling an all-male ballet company that shares their passion for ballet classics mixed with exuberant comedy; Out in Rural America, five stories about the LGBTQ experience in a small Midwestern town; Expect a Miracle: Finding Light in the Darkness of a Pandemic, spotlighting the AIDS crisis in San Diego and the heroes who run its Fraternity House hospice; and Becoming Johanna, following a teenaged transgender Latina who finds support and acceptance in unexpected places. On wttw.com, meet local activist Lori Cannon, who has applied her decades of experience feeding AIDs sufferers to the COVID-19 pandemic; discover Chicago’s Gerber/Hart Library and Archives, documenting LGBTQ+ history in the hope of dispelling homophobia and marginalization; and learn about the role that lesbians played in the city’s women’s movement as they fought for equality and their own place within feminism. On WFMT, listen for Benjamin Britten’s Serenade for Tenor, Horn, and Strings, a piece the English composer, conductor, and pianist wrote for his creative and life partner, tenor Peter Pears. Other selections include Britten’s Billy Budd from the Metropolitan Opera; the special An AIDS Quilt Songbook: Sing for Hope on Listening to Singers as well as an episode featuring lesbian artists Patricia Racette, Jamie Barton, and Laurie Rubin. On wfmt.com, take a walking tour of 11 LGBTQ+ pioneering artists whose legacies are on display in Lakeview (story on page 4); enjoy a playlist of classical music by LGBTQ+ composers from Antonio Vivaldi to Ethyl Smith; and now that local live music is making a comeback, WFMT brings you a preview of the North Shore Chamber Music Festival. As summer arrives in Chicago, WTTW and WFMT are, as ever, grateful for your support. Sincerely,
Sandra Cordova Micek President & CEO

The Legacy Walk in Chicago's Lakeview Neighborhood
A Walking Tour 11 LGBTQ+ Artists Whose Legacies Are on Display in Chicago By KEEGAN MORRIS Along a half-mile stretch of sidewalk in the eastern part of the Lakeview neighborhood in Chicago, you can walk through history. A series of ten 25-foot pylons recognizes influential figures across genders, races, and fields in what is described as “the only outdoor LGBTQ museum walk in the world.” Let’s celebrate 11 musicians, artists, and movements of the LGBTQ+ community currently honored in the rotating installation.
Alvin Ailey 3541 N. Halsted More than 30 years after his death, Alvin Ailey is still one of the defining forces of American modern dance. A pioneering dancer, choreographer, and activist, Ailey’s work infused ballet and jazz dance with historically African American traditions of movement. His work challenged gender roles and heteronormativity entrenched within dance as well as society as a whole; for instance, his choreography called for same-sex partnering.

Rudolf Nureyev
3345 N. Halsted
3540 N. Halsted
3511 N. Halsted
A poet, playwright, and novelist, Reinaldo Arenas clashed with the communist government of his native Cuba in part because of his openness about his sexuality. His autobiography, Before Night Falls, was published two years after his untimely death; it was adapted into a 2000 film and a 2010 opera.
Almost 70 years after her death, Frida Kahlo’s striking art still captures the attention and imagination of audiences. Born in Mexico City, Kahlo’s paintings drew inspiration from Mexico’s rich folk traditions. Though her work received some recognition in her lifetime, in the years since her death, Kahlo and her art are now instantly recognizable and have become emblems in key Latin American, feminist, and LGBTQ communities.
One of the leading dancers of the 21st century, Nureyev changed the way the world saw male ballet dancers. Following his defection from the USSR, Nureyev forged a legendary onstage partnership with prima ballerina Margot Fonteyn and established himself as a formidable choreographer. Offstage, Nureyev spent time in relationship with dancers Erik Bruhn and Robert Tracy.
Josephine Baker 3704 N. Halsted Entertainer, dancer, singer, agent, activist, icon: Josephine Baker’s life was as singular as her talent. Born in St. Louis, Baker moved to Paris – her adopted home – in part because of the racism ingrained in the American arts. She proudly flouted social conventions tied to her race and gender; Baker had relationships with men and women, possibly including a rumored affair with Frida Kahlo, who is also enshrined on the Legacy Walk.
3311 N. Halsted
3707 N. Halsted Audre Lorde's cont ribut ions to ar t, poetry, and activism were manifold. The self-described “black, lesbian, mother, warrior, poet,” directly confronted the issues of racism, sexism, capitalism, and homophobia in her work, eventually founding a press, Kitchen Table, which focused on publishing works by women of color. Leonard Bernstein 3641 N. Halsted One of the defining figures of 20th century music, Leonard Bernstein excelled as a musician, conductor, composer, and pedagogue. On the occasion of his 2018 centennial, WFMT celebrated Bernstein with the Chicago Gay Men’s Chorus at the Leonard Bernstein plaque on the Legacy Walk.
Keith Haring
Born in Indiana, Cole Porter penned songs and standards such as “Night and Day” and “I’ve Got You Under My Skin” which transcend the time and place of their creation and continue to inspire musicians today. Porter was known among his colleagues to be gay, and there is speculation that some of his tender songs were written for his lovers.
Billy Straythorn 3411 N. Halsted If you’re a fan of Duke Ellington, you’re likely a fan of Billy Strayhorn, though you may not know it. The pianist and composer enjoyed a fruitful creative relationship with Sir Duke for more than 25 years, penning “Take the ‘A’ Train” among other hits. Openly gay, Strayhorn fought for LGBTQ+ and civil rights and wrote music dedicated to his friend, Martin Luther King, Jr.
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky
3342 N. Halsted Artist Keith Haring’s expressive and colorful imagery still resonates today, embedded within the popular imagination. Haring was openly gay and involved in the LGBTQ+ rights movement. His iconic and universal forms are on display throughout Chicago in murals and a large sculpture along Lake Michigan.
Cole Porter
Audre Lorde
3311 N. Halsted
Josephine Baker
1812 Overture, Swan Lake, the Serenade for Strings, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky wrote more indelible melodies than we can count. Tchaikovsky famously uttered, “Where the heart does not enter, there can be no music;” his relationship with violinist Iosif Kotek inspired his Violin Concerto, among other works.

Exploring Music with Bill McGlaughlin
Former Chicago Symphony music director Sir Georg Solti conducted numerous concert performances of operas, including Beethoven’s Fidelio, starring dramatic soprano Hildegard Behrens. The performance was later recorded for London-Decca.
Having looked during past weeks at quite a few string-quartet composers, Bill now turns to Franz Schubert, many of whose quartets involve subtle and unusual key relationships. The week will end with his masterful String Quintet in C.
American composer Sean Shepherd has had his music performed all over the country. In 2011 the La Jolla and the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festivals co-commissioned his Oboe Quartet. The broadcast ends with Brahms from pianist Kirill Gerstein and friends.

You’ll hear all the usual suspects (Copland, Gershwin, Stravinsky, and Schoenberg), but Bill also weaves in beautiful and intriguing music from Peter Menin, Adolphus Hailstork, Charles Wuorinen, Joan Tower, Charlie Parker, and, yes, Fats Domino. London, and formerly home to brothels, bear fighting arenas, plus Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre. Artists of all times and disciplines wandered this district, with a bird’s-eye view of St. Paul’s Cathedral and Westminster. During the English Reformation, Anglican chant developed with the decree that all chants were to be in English, adhering to the cadence of the spoken word. Listen to Thomas Tallis, court composer to Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth, hear Purcell and Elgar carry his English sound into their compositions, and Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis, based on a psalm that starts, “Why fumeth in fight.” 8:00 Live from WFMT: Spektral Quartet 10:00 Evenings with Kerry Frumkin

Hear music by Elgar, Vaughan Williams, Holst, Britten, and Thomas Ades, and three cheers for the music of London and Nanki-Poo, too! 8:00 Live from WFMT: Jennifer Koh, violin, and Reiko Uchida, piano 10:00 Evenings with Kerry Frumkin
