The Guide

Dear Member, Whether March, as the old saying goes, “comes in like a lion and out like a lamb” or vice versa, one thing is certain: in Chicago, its arrival means that spring is just around the corner. While we wait, WTTW and WFMT have got you covered. This month, Geoffrey Baer takes you on a journey to the British Isles to highlight the work of a pioneer of contextual urban design, Robert Adams, who has made “a place at the table” for architecture that extends the vocabulary of classical and traditional buildings in today’s built environment. Tune in on the evening of Thursday, March 23 and visit the companion website on wttw.com. On WTTW11, join us for the dramatic season finales of Mercy Street and Victoria, followed by a special on-air after-party with the cast as they look back at memorable moments from the series. A new special celebrates Ken Burns: America’s Storyteller; travel expert Rick Steves pays a visit to WTTW to explore the history and traditions of European Easter; we bring back a beloved and newly remastered music special, Roy Orbison: A Black and White Night, and revisit two popular installments of Soundstage featuring Tom Jones and Blondie. From the creator of Last Tango in Halifax comes a new Masterpiece drama about the literary Brontë sisters, To Walk Invisible, one of several specials to mark Women’s History Month, including an American Masters profile of country legend Patsy Cline. And we take a nostalgic trip back in time with a new documentary tracing the history of Wisconsin’s “old-fashioned” supper clubs. The new WTTW PBS Kids 24/7 channel is now a big hit with our youngest viewers on TV and online and, in March, look for a fun quiz, “Which Victoria Character Are You?”; and an interview with Cécile Fromont, a University of Chicago art history professor who appears in the Henry Louis Gates, Jr. series Africa’s Great Civilizations on a new section of our website called Playlist (wttw.com/playlist). On WFMT, the Saturday Metropolitan Opera broadcasts continue; this month’s Met highlights are Rossini’s dramatic William Tell and Matthew Polenzani starring in Mozart’s Idomeneo with James Levine conducting. We’ll present some special live Impromptus from Levin Studio: Carl Grapentine hosting the Valparaiso Chorale, members of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, and winners of the Marilyn Horne Song Competition. And from Ganz Hall at the Chicago College of Performing Arts, we have a recital by pianist Vassily Primakov, paying tribute to his former teacher, Vera Gornostaeva. On wfmt.com, we’ll celebrate Women’s History Month with a story on 10 Composers Changing Contemporary Classical Music (Who Also Happen to Be Women), and, while Rick Steves is in town, WFMT will get the lowdown on his favorite European music venues and festivals. Be sure to check wfmt.com daily for classical music news and features as spring approaches. Sincerely,

Dan Schmidt President & CEO

The film endeavors to brush the dust off American history, much as the musical does, and provide a unique new way for us to view our national heritage and current political landscape.

The supper club scene slowly faded from the rest of the country, but kept a strong hold in Wisconsin due to a culture that allowed it to thrive. Around for decades, supper clubs in Wisconsin have been able to hold their own style and traditions. While chain restaurants continue to expand and threaten their future, supper clubs are fighting to survive while continuing to offer the same exceptional dining experience and a personal touch that is not seen in the modern lifestyle of dine and dash. Yet, the United States only ranks 97th out of 190 countries when it comes to the number of women in elected office. In this new documentary, filmmaker Kiley Lane explores why more women don’t run for office. Through interviews with elected officials, scholars, high

school students, and leaders of two nonprofits dedicated to raising the next generation of female leaders, the program investigates where political ambition begins and why society should encourage more women to lead. Interviewees include Anne Moses, founder of IGNITE; Senator Lisa Murkowski, Republican of Alaska; Tiffany Dufu, former president of the White House Project; Melissa Deckman, professor of public affairs at Washington College; Susannah W. Shakow, founder of Running Start; Emiliana Simon-Thomas, cognitive, affective, and behavioral neuroscientist at UC Berkeley; and Amanda Adkins, GOP state chair, Kansas; among others. 11:30 BBC World News

Yo-Yo Ma

Final Broadcasts from the Shanghai Symphony Many of the Shanghai concerts WFMT has been broadcasting since the beginning of January have featured combinations of Chinese music with more familiar Western classical fare. This month, a concert featuring cellist Yo-Yo Ma will conclude with Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony, but it will start with Spring Festival Overture by Li Huanzhi, based on a traditional Chinese tune for the Lunar New Year (also known as Spring Festival). Ma and Wu Tong collaborate on a duo with orchestra for cello and sheng by Zhao Lin: the sheng is a Chinese woodwind instrument, consisting of a bundle of bamboo pipes. Later in March, the Shanghai Symphony presents more Russian music, works by Rachmaninoff and Tchaikovsky, combined with works from 2011 by American composer John Corigliano. Written in memory of 9/11, One Sweet Morning for mezzo-soprano and orchestra will feature Sasha Cooke as the soloist. The Shanghai series comes to an end this month with highlights from the Shanghai Isaac Stern International Violin Competition.

José Mauricio de Nunez Garcia

A Brazilian Classicist Featured on Fiesta Strongly influenced by the works of Haydn and Mozart, and later Rossini, José Mauricio de Nunez Garcia (1767-1830) was a leader of musical life in colonial Brazil and, in addition, was an ordained priest. He was a hero to the artists and intellectuals of Brazil and other South American colonies during the early 19th century, most of whom were involved in the independence movements from Spain and Portugal. Nunez Garcia’s life was also intertwined with the other side, so to speak: the Portuguese royal court that spent some years in exile in Brazil during the Napoleonic Wars. He served that court as a keyboardist, while also teaching and composing a number of sacred choral works. One of these is his Missa de Santa Cecilia, which Fiesta host Elbio Barilari will sample while he recalls this nearly-forgotten artist’s contributions to South American musical life.

Marina Rebeka

Rossini from the Metropolitan Opera When the Met unveiled its new production of William Tell last fall, most reviewers in print and online were less than enthusiastic about the sets, costumes, and staging. That won’t matter as the company presents Rossini’s epic melodrama on the radio this month as part of its Saturday-matinee series, because all commentators were unanimous in praising the excellence of the singing and the playing of the Met Orchestra. Baritone Gerald Finley takes the title role and bass-baritone John Relyea portrays Gessler, the dictatorial Austrian governor of occupied Switzerland. Rossini gave much beautiful music to the opera’s pair of lovers, tenor Bryan Hymel as Arnold, a Swiss patriot, and Marina Rebeka as Mathilde, Gessler’s daughter. Until last fall, the Met had not staged William Tell for some eight decades, and never using the original French libretto. This was Rossini’s last opera; many critics and scholars regard it as his life’s masterwork.

Sunday 19 Jaap van Zweden

Chicago Symphony Revives Shostakovich Rarity As part of the Truth to Power festival in 2014, guest conductor Jaap van Zweden opened a concert with Shostakovich’s Five Fragments. Dating from 1935, these short movements have been described as expressionistic, and even as reminiscent of the compressed works of Anton Webern. In no portion of the score do the members of the orchestra play all at the same time: one movement features woodwinds, the next brass, then strings, and so on. The remainder of the concert features more music from the 1930s and 1940s. Benjamin Britten’s Sinfonia da Requiem was commissioned by the Empire of Japan, which decided it didn’t like Britten’s use of Christian terminology in the movement titles. The eventual premiere was by the New York Philharmonic, and the work was then taken up by the Boston Symphony under Serge Koussevitzky, who was thus introduced to the young Britten’s talent, and eventually commissioned him to write the opera Peter Grimes. Rounding out the CSO broadcast will be Prokofiev’s Symphony #5, a wartime score that, unlike the other works on the program, radiates hope and confidence, in spite of its evocations of the battlefield.

Vassily Primakov

Vassily Primakov in Recital Born in Russia in 1979, Primakov studied piano at the Moscow Central Special Music School with Vera Gornostaeva, then came to the United States to study at Juilliard with Jerome Lowenthal. The winner of several competitions and prizes, he’s been especially admired for his interpretations of the works of Chopin. His recordings have been mostly on the Bridge label, but in 2011 he founded his own label, LP Classics, and on that label has released a number of re-discovered recordings by his first teacher and mentor, Mme. Gornostaeva. WFMT listeners and other lovers of piano music have delighted in these discoveries of a keyboard artist who, for political reasons, was essentially denied a career outside of the former Soviet Union. In January, Primakov paid tribute to Vera Gornostaeva with a recital in Ganz Hall at the Chicago College of Performing Arts: music by Rachmaninoff, Scriabin, and Chopin. You can hear it complete.

Kaija Saariaho

Seth Boustead Explores Two Contemporary Operas Irish composer Roger Doyle constructed a pre-recorded electronic score to support live singers in Heresy, premiered last year in Dublin. It recounts the life of Giordano Bruno (1548-1600), a monk and philosopher who was tried, convicted, and ultimately burned at the stake by the Roman Inquisition. Doyle’s attention was attracted to Bruno’s life via the frequent references made to him in James Joyce’s Finnegan’s Wake. Kaija Saariaho’s L’Amour de Loin (Love from Afar) was commissioned by and premiered at the Salzburg Festival in 2000, and has since been performed internationally, including a production late last year at the Met. Set in the French province of Aquitaine and an Eastern Mediterranean kingdom called Tripoli during the Middle Ages, it references the cult of courtly love that idealized romantic longing and the ultimate despair of passions impossible to fulfill: the emotional roots of much medieval poetry and music. Seth reports on and samples music from both works.
