The Guide

Dear Member,

The Member Magazine for WTTW and WFMT Renée Crown Public Media Center 5400 North Saint Louis Avenue Chicago, Illinois 60625

This month, we premiere Chicago by ‘L’ with Geoffrey Baer, the newest of Geoffrey’s tours of our dynamic city. Come along as Geoffrey rides on Chicago’s color-coded elevated train system, hopping on and off to meet people who live and work in its shadow, exploring neighborhoods within its reach, and sharing its surprising history. On the website – wttw.com/L – find an interactive map to explore Chicago’s neighborhoods, the history, and future of the ‘L’; watch stunning drone footage and video extras; and browse the art of ‘L.’ Also in March, Call the Midwife is back for a new season! On wttw.com, learn about Stories of Survival, two moving documentaries produced by the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center. Also on wttw.com in honor of Women’s History Month, discover the little-known stories of Chicago women – Hazel Johnson, the mother of environmental justice, and Laura Liu, a pioneering judge in Chicago and Illinois. This summer we’ll feature an entire season of special programming honoring trailblazing women in Chicago and beyond. On WFMT, we will also observe Women’s History Month with a focus on women composers and performers, and don’t miss Bill McGlaughlin’s Exploring Music theme, Millennium of Women’s Music. And on wfmt.com, celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with a collection of Irish composers who you might consider adding to your music library.

Instead, he shows that the true origins of Christianity lie further east. 1:30 A History of Christianity: Catholicism – The Unpredictable Rise of Rome (Part 2 of 6) More than one billion Christians look to Rome, more than half of all

Christians on the planet. But how did a small Jewish sect from the backwoods of first-century Palestine, which preached humility and the virtue of poverty, become the established religion of Western Europe? A History of Christianity: Orthodoxy – from Empire to Empire (Part 3 of 6) MacCulloch charts Orthodoxy’s extraordinary fight for survival. After its glory days in the Eastern Roman Empire, it stood right in the path of Muslim expansion, suffered betrayal by crusading Catholics, was seized by the Russian tsars, and faced near-extinction under Soviet communism. A History of Christianity: Reformation – The Individual Before God (Part 4 of 6) The Amish today are peaceable folk, but five centuries ago their ancestors were seen as some of the most dangerous people in Europe. MacCulloch makes sense of the Reformation and reveals how a faith based on obedience and authority gave birth to one based on individual conscience.

EVENING 6:00 A History of Christianity: Protestantism – The Evangelical Explosion (Part 5 of 6) MacCulloch traces the growth of an exuberant expression of faith that has spread across the globe – Evangelical Protestantism. Today, it is associated with conservative politics, but the whole story is distinctly more unexpected. 7:30 A History of Christianity: God in the Dock (Part 6 of 6) MacCulloch explores a distinctive feature about Western Christianity – skepticism – that has transformed both Western culture and Christianity. He challenges the simplistic notion that faith in Christianity has steadily ebbed

away before the relentless advance of science, reason, and progress, and shows instead how the tide of faith perversely flows back in. 9:00 Doo Wop to Pop Rock: My Music Celebrates 20 Years Celebrate 20 years of greatest hit songs from the ’50s to the ’70s featuring legendary performers The Kingston Trio, Glen Campbell, Aretha Franklin, Engelbert Humperdinck, Judy Collins, Davy Jones, Mel Carter, Patti Page, and more. 11:30 Suze Orman’s Ultimate Retirement Guide [R]

Harry Bicket

Live from the Met: Così fan tutte Così fan tutte, loosely translated as All Women Are Like That, was originally set in the Italian seaside city of Naples, a sunny image for the winter-bound Viennese who first heard and saw the opera in 1790. The Metropolitan Opera has updated and Americanized the setting by moving the action to New York’s Coney Island in about 1950. The cast includes sopranos Nicole Car and Heidi Stober, mezzo Serena Malfi, tenor Ben Billis, and bass-baritones Gerald Finley and Luca Pisaroni. Finley plays the scheming Don Alfonso, who convinces two young men to test the loyalty of their fiancées through trickery, and the plot unfolds to show us what happens next, illuminated by some of Mozart’s most gorgeous music. Harry Bicket is the conductor.

Riccardo Muti

Chicago Symphony Orchestra Radio Broadcasts William Schuman’s Symphony No. 9, subtitled Le Fosse Ardeatine, or The Ardeatine Caves, commemorates a Nazi atrocity of 1944, in which hundreds of Italians were murdered in caves outside Rome. At one of last year’s CSO subscription concerts, music director Riccardo Muti paired the work with Mozart’s final masterpiece, the Requiem in D Minor. The program reveals Muti’s commitment to sending messages of peace and reconciliation through music: “We cannot live today, as we say, in an ivory tower…we must be active in the society.” To go along with the Mozart Requiem, another concert this month will find the CSO and its chorus under the direction of guest conductor Alain Altinoglu in two landmarks of French sacred music: Poulenc’s Gloria, and Gounod’s lyrical St. Cecilia Mass, honoring the patron saint of music.

Exploring Music with Bill McGlaughlin Bill’s topic reflects the scope of the week: women composers and performers going back as far as he can find them in the history books – starting with the medieval abbesscomposer Hildegard of Bingen, he’ll go on to spotlight such figures as the Spaniard Maria Theresa von Paradis, a friend of Mozart’s, and the LatinAmerican composer-pianist Teresa Carreño. Performers will include violinist Hilary Hahn and mezzosoprano Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, among lots of others. Composers more familiar to us will be highlighted in a week Bill calls The Class of 1809. Choosing 1809 as a pivotal year in the histories of international politics and of music, he will sample the works of six extraordinary composers born between 1809 and 1813: Mendelssohn, Chopin, Schumann, Liszt, Wagner, and Verdi.

Unsuk Chin

The Los Angeles Philharmonic in Concert Composer Unsuk Chin, who values her long association with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, wrote SPIRA, a concerto for orchestra, on commission from the ensemble. She notes that a concerto for orchestra not only challenges musicians to “peaks of virtuosity,” and also allows the orchestra to be treated as one entity, in chamber-like combinations, or placing a focus on just one section. Her spiral of sound is generated by the two vibraphones that are heard prominently throughout the piece. Thomas Adès was also commissioned by the LA Phil, and his inspiration came from Dante’s Divine Comedy. Inferno exists as an orchestral score and as a ballet; it will eventually be joined by Purgatorio and Paradiso. He made no attempt to represent all the multifarious figures seen in Dante’s vision of the nether world; instead, he offers what he calls “a thumbnail map” through 13 separate scenes (played without pause). Music director Gustavo Dudamel is the conductor of the Adès score; guest conductor Mirga GrazinyteTyla leads the work by Unsuk Chin.

Evgeny Nikitin

Live from the Met: The Flying Dutchman

The Russian bass-baritone Evgeny Nikitin will take the title role in a new production at the Metropolitan Opera of Wagner’s romantic tale of The Flying Dutchman, a sailor doomed to cruise the world’s oceans forever. Met audiences have seen and heard Mr. Nikitin in several previous Wagnerian dramas, including Tristan und Isolde, Parsifal, and Götterdämmerung. Soprano Anja Kampe will make her company debut as Senta, and Valery Gergiev is the conductor. Wagner set his Dutchman score in an unspecified locale on the coast of Norway, and the time is also unspecified. The work is supposed to have been inspired by a voyage the composer took across the North Sea in continuous storms; stormy weather and threatening seas are often evoked by the music.

Gioachino Rossini (1792-1868) is justly famous as an operatic comedian, having created one of the most enduring of all comic operas, The Barber of Seville. Less familiar, but with no less delightful music, is La Cenerentola (Cinderella), wherein Angelina (Tara Erraught) goes from being a household drudge to marrying a prince, with help getting to the prince’s ball from one Alidoro (Christian Van Horn), a philosopher who’s also a friend and mentor to Prince Don Ramiro of Salerno (Javier Camarena), and some assists from the prince’s valet, Dandini (Davide Luciano). James Gaffigan is the conductor.

Piotr Beczala

Live from the Met: Werther

Jules Massenet’s opera Werther is based on a novel by Goethe, The Sorrows of Young Werther, the sad account of a poet whose love for a married woman leads him into deep melancholy and, at last, fatal despair. It’s easy to see how such a story could become the basis for operatic treatment; the composer unveiled it at the Vienna Court Opera in 1892. At the Metropolitan Opera, tenor Piotr Beczala takes the title role and mezzosoprano Joyce DiDonato sings the role of Charlotte. Her husband, Albert, is portrayed by Etienne Dupuis, and Met music director Yannick NézetSéguin is the conductor. Highlights of Massenet’s highly melodic score are Werther’s principal aria, “Pourquoi me réveiller” (Why should I awake) and Charlotte’s letter scene, wherein she expresses her guilt and frustration over being unable to discard her would-be lover’s letters.
