Q&A
with Geoffrey Baer and Eddie Griffin
The new four-part series THE GREAT CHICAGO QUIZ SHOW premieres on Friday, March 26 at 8:00 pm on WTTW. Visit the companion website, launching the same day, at wttw.com/quiz. We asked host Geoffrey Baer and producer Eddie Griffin for the scoop on how the show came about, what happened behind the scenes, and to give us some prep questions. Q: Why THE GREAT CHICAGO QUIZ SHOW? Baer: I really love shows that inspire the audience to actively engage with us. And a quiz show is the ultimate! It’s about as interactive as we can get on TV. I really hope viewers at home will be shouting the answers at their TV screen, trying to beat the contestants to the punch. And there will also be quizzes on the website so everyone can be a contestant! Q: How were the contestants chosen? 4
MARCH
2021
Baer: We put out an appeal on social media for people to send us 30-second video “auditions” offering their Chicago cred and explaining why they would be perfect for the show. The auditions were AMAZING! Some people created quite highly produced videos with graphics and photos. Others just talked, but their passion and their sense of fun was so compelling. We also brainstormed people we know personally whom we thought would be great contestants. And we sprinkled in some local celebs, including Second City veteran George Wendt, who played Norm on the sitcom Cheers, and famous Chicago rapper Lupe Fiasco.
Griffin: I hope I’m not crushing anyone’s dreams here, but we never intended to cast contestants who were obvious trivia experts. The heart of the show is not scoring points or following strict game shows rules – it’s the personal interaction between Geoffrey and the contestants. We wanted to find warm characters with big personalities, charm, and wit. The audience will tune in for the trivia and knowledge, but hopefully they stay because they’re enjoying the contestants. Q: Any favorite or funny stories from filming? Baer: The way we made this show is unlike anything I’ve done before. I host the show in front of a green screen in our studio and all the contestants appear from their own homes via Skype. A lot of the show involves my improvised (and hopefully entertaining) banter with the contestants, but of course as we all know from endless Zoom meetings that there is that annoying little delay. So it was a constant challenge not to step on the contestant’s next thought or kill a really funny punchline by cutting them off too soon. And what a bunch of characters they were! From a Chicagoborn Hollywood producer who now hosts a podcast about sex, to a South side father who creates Chicago history videos on TikTok to educate his kids through their preferred platform. We learned that the well-known University of Chicago social scientist Eve Ewing has a side job writing the Marvel Comics character Ironheart. And a woman in Bridgeport rolled up her sleeve and showed us a tattoo of the CTA ‘L’ system map on her arm – she got married on a chartered ‘L’ train. We met a food writer who eats bugs, a professional clown who cheers up hospitalized kids, and a guy who drove one of the buses in the Chicago Cubs post-World Series parade. Griffin: Some of the best moments in the studio were when the show went off script a little. Prior to filming George Wendt, I
Test Your Knowledge! Here are a few questions to get you warmed up… 1. The story of careless Mrs. O’Leary’s cow kicking over a lantern is a myth rooted in anti-Irish Catholic prejudice. But the conflagration did start in her barn. What stands on that site today? A. A vacant lot, by city ordinance B. A Chicago Police impound lot for towed cars C. The Old Chicago Post Office D. The Chicago Fire Department training academy 2. Salt Creek in the western suburbs is a freshwater stream, so why is it called Salt Creek? A. High mineral content in the streambed makes the water taste somewhat salty. B. A wagonload of salt was spilled into the river in 1838. C. It was named for an early German settler Friedrich Salz, which translates to “Salt.” D. It’s a mistranslation of the Native American name for the creek. 3. A Puerto Rican barrio nicknamed “La Clark” was bulldozed for so-called urban renewal and replaced with what? A. Sandburg Village next door to the Gold Coast B. University of Illinois Chicago on the near west side C. The Lincoln Yards development in Lincoln Park D. The Stevenson Expressway near Midway Airport
would never have imagined that he and Geoffrey would both end up doing the Lightning Round in an SNL “Super Fans” thick Chicago accent, but “dat’s where it went, my frendt.” Q: How difficult are the questions? Do you have to be a trivia super nerd to get them right? Griffin: You know, some of the questions are difficult, I have to admit. There were
4. Which Chicago suburb was the one of the first municipalities in the U.S. incorporated and governed entirely by African Americans? A. Olympia Fields B. Calumet City C. Robbins D. North Chicago 5. Cows on Parade” was a Chicago sensation in 1999. But the idea didn’t originate here! What city did it first? A. Zurich, Switzerland (Cheese!) B. Madison, Wisconsin (America’s Dairyland!) C. Buenos Aires, Argentina (Beef!) D. Perth, Australia (Who knows why?) 6. What did the members of the Lake Zurich Golf Club do to prevent a railroad from being built across their golf course in 1912? A. They turned part of the country club into a cemetery. B. They bought the railroad. C. They used the groundskeeper’s tools to sabotage the tracks. D. They filed a lawsuit heard in the Supreme Court that to this day governs eminent domain cases.

plenty of answers I didn’t know prior to production. But I think the mark of a good trivia game is making sure the players can at least get in the ballpark with their answers. There’s no fun in stumping your contestants, but you also don’t want to throw softballs. There’s a fine line in creating that balance. If any of our questions seemed to be on the tougher side, we gave Geoffrey creative license to drop some hints. This interview has been edited for length.

As many of you said, it’s folklore. But the story made it into the Congressional Record on August 2, 1968, in a speech by Rep. John Kluczynski. 3. A. 4. C. 5. A . Zurich in 1998, the year before they came to Chicago. Last year (2019) the cows came back to Chicago for a 20th anniversary encore. 6. A . The club learned that cemeteries could not be condemned to build railroads. So doctor-members secured four cadavers and a lovely little graveyard along one of the fairways. The Palatine, Lake Zurich & Wauconda Railroad gave up and rerouted its tracks. It opened in 1913 with one used engine named “Old Maud” offering hourly service to the scenic vacation spots in the area.

Lyric Opera of Chicago: Sole e Amore
Exploring Music with Bill McGlaughlin
In 1999, then-music director Kurt Masur commissioned several Messages for the Millennium, including And Farewell Goes Out Sighing by Georgian composer Giya Kancheli. Also, Leonard Bernstein conducts Shostakovich’s Leningrad Symphony.
Curated by music director designate Enrique Mazzola, this evening of art songs by famous Italian opera composers debuted on Lyric’s website last month. We’ll air it as a special Live from WFMT presentation, featuring Ryan Opera Center artists.
Host Bill McGlaughlin shows how composers have used the sonic contrast between the Major and minor modes to affect pieces’ moods and timbres. He’ll also showcase older modes from the Middle Ages still heard in the music of today.

For Women’s History Month In addition to recordings by women artists and works composed by women, several special features will highlight female accomplishments in the arts and elsewhere. A More Perfect Union: A Tribute to Ruth Bader Ginsburg recognizes the late Supreme Court justice’s place in legal history and also her love for music. From our archives we offer two tributes to African-American soprano Leontyne Price: one was originally hosted by Kerry Frumkin to mark her 60th birthday, the other was produced more recently by Lyric Opera’s Roger Pines. Also hear two Music and Conversation With programs featuring mezzo-soprano Marilyn Horne and soprano Renée Fleming, a Live from WFMT devoted to Chicago’s Artemisia Vocal Trio, Dame Ethel Smyth’s opera The Wreckers, and a Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center presentation of Vignettes: Covered Wagon Woman written for and interpreted by mezzo-soprano Stephanie Blythe.

Pablo Heras-Casado
From the Metropolitan Opera The production of Bizet’s Carmen from 2014 stars the Georgian mezzosoprano Anita Rachvelishvili in the title role; she had made her Metropolitan Opera debut in the same role three years earlier. Critics of this production singled her out for praise, along with the Romanian-born soprano Anita Hartig as Micaela, and the conducting of Pablo Heras-Casado. About the production, they noted stark sets and a general ambience of violence, with no moves to glamorize the supposedly “colorful” lives of gypsies, smugglers, and toreadors. The cast also stars Aleksandrs Antonenko as Don Jose and Ildar Abdrazakov as Escamillo.

Music of the Baroque 2021 On February 28, Music of the Baroque performed a virtual concerto program at Skokie’s North Shore Center led by violinists Kathleen Brauer and Kevin Case. Focusing on compositions written for pairs of soloists, the concert featured Bach’s popular TwoViolin Concerto in D Minor, composed around 1730 for the concerts of Leipzig’s Collegium Musicum; Vivaldi’s Two-Violin Concerto in A Minor; Handel’s Concerto grosso in E Minor, Opus 6/3; and Arcangelo Corelli’s Concerto grosso in F, Opus 6/2. Enjoy this recording of that concert, and stay tuned the same evening for more early music on Candice Agree’s Baroque&Before.

Patricia Kopatchinskaja
The Los Angeles Philharmonic in Concert The Korean-born composer Unsuk Chin, who won the prestigious Grawemeyer Award in 2004 for her violin concerto, composed SPIRA on commission from the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 2019. She describes it as a concerto for orchestra. For this concert, it was contrasted with more traditional fare: Debussy’s La Mer, and Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto which featured as soloist the Moldovan-Austrian violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja, a composer herself as well as a performer. Conducting this unusual program was Lithuania native Mirga Grazinyte-Tyla, a former Gustavo Dudamel Fellow.

Pretty Yende
From the Metropolitan Opera The Metropolitan Opera in 2013 presented a Rossini rarity: Le Comte Ory (Count Ory), which the composer created in 1828 using some music resurrected from an earlier Italian comic work, Il Viaggio a Reims. One oddity of Le Comte Ory is that it is set in the Middle Ages with a Crusade as a background element. Some of the men left at home, led by Count Ory, decide to romance the temporarily spouseless women taking refuge with Countess Adele by disguising themselves as…nuns. Tenor Juan Diego Florez took the title role, and this production also marked the company debut of the South African-born soprano Pretty Yende as Adele. Also starring was Karine Deshayes in the pivotal trousers role of Isolier, the count’s page.

Sir Andrew Davis
From the Metropolitan Opera In 2012 Sir Andrew Davis, music director at Lyric Opera of Chicago, conducted this performance of Mozart’s Don Giovanni at the Metropolitan Opera. His stellar cast was headed by Gerald Finley in the title role and Bryn Terfel as Leporello, the Don’s often-reluctant servant. The Latvian soprano Marina Rebeka portrayed the wronged Donna Anna, and her devoted lover, Don Ottavio, was played by Ryan Opera Center alumnus Matthew Polenzani. In the role of the also-wronged Donna Elvira was Ellie Dehn, and Isabel Leonard portrays the bride, Zerlina, who successfully avoids him.
