The Guide

Dear Member,

The Member Magazine for WTTW and WFMT Renée Crown Public Media Center 5400 North Saint Louis Avenue Chicago, Illinois 60625

March is Women’s History Month, and WTTW and WFMT will celebrate with a new Independent Lens film, the Oscar-nominated Writing with Fire that follows the journalists of India’s all-female newspaper; and a Great Performances special, The Conductor, focusing on the Ravinia Festival’s chief conductor and curator Marin Alsop; learn more about her on page 4. On WFMT, Candice Agree will offer five favorite recordings led by Alsop including works by Johannes Brahms, Kurt Weill, James P. Johnson, and Alsop’s mentor, Leonard Bernstein. This month, WTTW also welcomes back two popular women-centric series – the eagerly anticipated second season of Sanditon, based on Jane Austen’s unfinished novel; and perennial favorite Call the Midwife with season 11 finding the nuns and midwives continuing to navigate the swinging ’60s. And to round out Sunday nights, we are excited to bring you a new British adaptation of the hit Swedish detective series Before We Die, with Lesley Sharp in the leading role of DI Hannah Laing. Local Women’s History Month content on wttw. com includes a portrait of Lee Godie, an eccentric and prolific artist who lived much of her life outdoors in Chicago and created an acclaimed body of work; and the story of the Chicago Women’s Liberation Union, which included noted psychologist Naomi Weisstein, political activist and organizer Heather Booth, and others. On WFMT, the new weekly series WFMT Presents celebrates five renowned female musicians with The Price of Admission: A Musical Biography of Florence Price, and programs focusing on trumpeter and entrepreneur Mary Elizabeth Bowden, trailblazing pianist and activist Lara Downes, composer and multi-instrumentalist Claire Cowan, and singer-conductor Barbara Hannigan. On wfmt.com, explore Joan Tower’s Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman and discover why it was dedicated to Marin Alsop. Also, it’s not just women composers who have had to fight for recognition in classical music; discover 11 conductors such as Alsop, Susanna Mälkki, and Eun Sun Kim who are making the podium a more equitable place. And finally, learn about Teresa Carreño, Clara Schumann, and nine other women instrumentalists of the past who succeeded in spite of sexism. We are grateful you have chosen to spend your time with WTTW and WFMT. Thank you for your support. Sincerely, Sandra Cordova Micek President & CEO

An Evening with Lerner and Loewe - Broadway in Concert

Buddy Guy: True to the Blues

When Comedy Went to School

This celebration of Lerner and Loewe includes music from My Fair Lady, Gigi, Camelot, Brigadoon, and others, with Broadway stars and The American Pops Orchestra.

Buddy Guy quickly rose to prominence in the 1950s Chicago blues scene. He’s a living link to our city’s days of electric blues and one of the final surviving connections to a historic era in America’s musical evolution.

The birth of modern stand-up comedy began in the Catskill Mountains – a boot camp for the greatest generation of JewishAmerican comedians.

A Q&A with Marin Alsop the subject of GREAT PERFORMANCES: THE CONDUCTOR 9:00 PM FRI MAR 25 on WTTW

ONLY ONE WOMAN has ever led one of America’s top 25 orchestras as music director: Marin Alsop, who served as music director of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra from 2007 to 2021. (Nathalie Stutzmann will take over the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra this year.) The new Great Performances

documentary The Conductor, airing Friday, March 25 at 9:00 pm on WTTW, follows Alsop’s difficult rise and the obstacles women conductors continue to face. To lead up to the premiere, WFMT will celebrate Alsop the week of March 21 through 25, airing a recording by her each evening at 6:30 pm.

WFMT Vice President and General Manager George Preston spoke to Alsop, whose contract as Chief Conductor and Curator of the Ravinia Festival in Highland Park was just extended through 2025. GEORGE PRESTON: How did you get past the attitudes early

on in your career when so many people were telling you that women simply couldn’t be conductors?

successful: that they don’t feel alone, that they have a chance to make mistakes, and that they’re supported through all this.

MARIN ALSOP: I think I was pretty incredulous about it. I didn’t believe them. But there were enough of them that it was hard to sort of break through that noise. And I think my determination and my stubbornness [helped]: I just outlasted them. Just persistence and always trying to go back and improve my skills and be better at what I did. I was fortunate that I was born with a determined spirit and a tough skin. It was hard to endure, but I just persevered, somehow.

PRESTON: How do you gauge the progress that has been made in the musical world? Where do you hope to see it in five years’ time?

Archaic views like that, that women can’t do something – they say so much more about the person who holds the view than the reality. It’s because either people are unable to expand their vision, or they’re afraid, I think. So I always try to remember the source. And it’s generational, part of it, so I try to have some compassion for those older generations. When an older conductor would say, “Well, it’s okay if you conduct Mozart, but you can’t conduct Mahler.” I would just try to laugh it off internally, because it’s a ridiculous comment, of course. But you also have to remember that change is a very slow process. In order for us to become accustomed to seeing different people in new roles, it requires repeated exposure over a long period of time. I try to use myself as a barometer. Change is slow, and in order to effect change you have to be intentional and unrelenting. And I think those are my two biggest qualities! PRESTON: Aside from the music itself, are there ways that you feel you are changing the culture of classical music to help open things up to women? ALSOP: I hope so. When I realized early on in my career that there weren’t nearly as many women as I had expected coming into the field, I just naively thought, “Oh, there’ll be a lot more women now coming in,” you know? And then I looked around and thought,, “Hey, wait, there’s about the same number of us all the time, a handful.” I decided that I needed to try to change the landscape for the future, because if I didn’t do it, who would? So in 2002, I started a fellowship for women conductors called the Taki Alsop Conducting Fellowship. Now we have a total of 30 awardees. We’ve created a real community of women who support each other now and are connected to each other. I think that this is really important in order for women to be

ALSOP: It’s certainly better. I think it took the MeToo movement to move things forward substantially and I think, like with everything, we have to be intentional about change and aware of bias that creeps in. I hope in the next few years, we see organizations be able to let go of whether this is going to be the “first woman ever appointed” and all these kinds of things, and women are considered for their artistic merit. I think when we arrive there, then I’ll exhale at that moment. PRESTON: Do you ever get tired of questions about gender in interviews like this? ALSOP: I get tired of the focus on gender, because gender is something I had no hand in. I’m much more interested in talking about my personal and artistic growth over the last two decades, and where I’ve tried to focus my artistic efforts, and things that I really have invested in and made conscious efforts at changing or developing, because that’s something that I have a responsibility for and for which I can be held accountable. I can’t be held accountable for my gender. That was just a roll of the dice. I don’t mind talking about it because I feel that someone has to. I like being an advocate for others, and I take that responsibility to heart. But this is probably the least distinguishing thing about me. The thing I speak about the most is probably the least interesting thing about me. PRESTON: Can you give us some of the highlights of the new Breaking Barriers Festival celebrating women conductors that you are curating at Ravinia this summer? ALSOP: This summer marks the centenary of Margaret Hillis, who was so instrumental in founding the Chicago Symphony Chorus and was such a gifted conductor. We have an entire weekend of events and seminars that I think will shine some light on important discussion points. We kick it off with several of the Taki Alsop conducting fellows joining me on the podium, [including in] a piece for three conductors. We have so many things planned - it’s going to be great. This interview has been edited and condensed for clarity.

Partnering to help create opportunities Last year, Bank of America committed $1.25 billion over five years to advance racial equality and economic opportunity. To date, we’ve directly funded or invested one-third of this amount on top of long-standing efforts to make an impact in our communities and address society’s greatest challenges. Here are some of the ways we’re working to make a difference: • Investing $300 million in 100 minority-owned and minority-led equity funds, including Supply Change Capital. This will help diverse entrepreneurs and small business owners create more jobs, financial stability and growth. • Investing $36 million in 21 Minority Depository Institutions (MDIs) and Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) banks, such as First Women’s Bank, that support minority-owned businesses. This is in addition to approximately $100 million in deposits to MDIs and our existing CDFI portfolio of more than $2 billion, which helps build pathways to economic vitality in local markets. • Providing funding and support through innovative programs and partnerships with community colleges, universities and nonprofits, including Harold Washington College, City Colleges of Chicago, that offer training and credentialing programs connecting more people to high-wage, in-demand careers. We’re doing this work in collaboration with community partners, business leaders, experts and academics across the public and private sectors to ensure that our investments are directed where they’re needed most. Together, we can help drive sustainable progress in Chicago. What would you like the power to do? ®
