Air Check Dear Member, So many of us have fond memories connected with WTTW and WFMT. Perhaps you watched Masterpiece (or Masterpiece Theatre as it was called) with your family, or were inspired to attend a symphony concert or opera performance because of music you heard on WFMT. Maybe we took you under the sea, to foreign lands, or outer space, or you or your children perfected your letters by watching Sesame Street. In these uncertain times for public media, we would love to hear your own stories, and encourage you to take action to preserve and protect this invaluable resource by visiting wttw.com/ILoveWTTW. There, you can learn more about the value, reach, and impact of WTTW. You’ll be glad you did. You have come to expect exciting options on WTTW11, and May does not disappoint! In addition to the continuing series on Saturday and Sunday nights, Masterpiece premieres two exciting specials: King Charles III, an adaptation of the critically acclaimed Broadway play that imagines Prince Charles’ ascension to the throne following Queen Elizabeth’s death; and the chilling drama Dark Angel, in which Joanne Froggatt (Anna from Downton Abbey) essays a very different role as Mary Ann Cotton, Britain’s first female serial killer. The new five-part reality series Victorian Slum House follows a group of modern-day adventurers who move into a restored tenement in London’s East End to experience life in poverty in the latter half of the 19th century. Nature goes undercover in a dolphin community with more Spy Creatures, and we get a close-up look at Plants Behaving Badly; several programs explore America’s prison system; and we end the month with the National Memorial Day Concert and the National Geographic Bee. On wttw.com/playlist, in addition to weekly episode recaps of Call the Midwife and Home Fires, look for a feature story about royalty on television (Victoria, The Crown, and the upcoming King Charles III) and why Americans are so obsessed with the subject. Also, visit our new microsite for Architect Robert Adam (wttw.com/adam) to learn about this outspoken architect who builds modern-day Downton Abbeys, and explore the wild side of three American cities – Chicago, New York, and San Francisco – in our new digital series Urban Nature. You can watch all 16 episodes online at wttw.com/urbannature. On WFMT, the 2016-17 live Metropolitan Opera season comes to a rousing conclusion with Strauss’ romantic comedy Der Rosenkavalier, starring Renée Fleming in her signature role of the Marschallin. We also begin our annual rebroadcast of Lyric Opera productions from this past season: Wagner’s Das Rheingold with Eric Owens in the lead role of Wotan, with Sir Andrew Davis conducting. And for Memorial Day, Chicago Tribune film critic Michael Phillips has prepared a special that focuses on war movies and the evocative scores written for them. And as KAIA String Quartet begins its WFMT residency this May, visit wfmt.com to explore musical traditions of Latin America, the Caribbean, and the Iberian Peninsula in a new series of videos produced for all ages. We hope you enjoy the beginning of spring with WTTW and WFMT, and thanks for your support! Sincerely,
Dan Schmidt President & CEO

Saturday, May 20, 2:00 pm RIKERS: AN AMERICAN JAIL, a riveting new documentary from Bill Moyers, brings you face to face with men and women who have endured incarceration at Rikers Island. The United States is facing a crisis of mass incarceration with more than 2.2 million people packed into its jails and prisons. To understand the human toll of this crisis, Rikers Island is a good place to start. Of the more than 7,500 people detained at Rikers Island on any given day, almost 80% have not yet been found guilty or innocent of the charges they face. All are at risk in the pervasive culture of violence that forces people to come to terms with what they must do for their own survival. Their stories, told direct to camera, vividly describe the cruel arc of the Rikers experience. Join us for a free screening and discussion about this moving film. The KAIA String Quartet: Music from Latin America Chicago’s KAIA Quartet is an ensemble committed to promoting music from different cultures, in addition to the traditional quartet repertory. Recently the group has focused on the music of Latin America, both popular and classical. Another of the group’s commitments is to present classical and world music in fun but educational ways to younger audiences. As one of two groups chosen to be 2017 artistsin-residence on WFMT and wfmt. com, the KAIA plans to familiarize our audience with the music of Latin America, perform in Chicago’s Latin American communities, and reach audiences via digital media. Violinists Victoria Moreira and Naomi Culp, violist Sixto Franco Chordá, and cellist Hope Shepherd DeCelle will join Carl Grapentine and Candice Agree on weekday mornings and afternoons during May, presenting music from one nation per week.

The acclaimed singer-songwriter and storyteller joins Rich Warren and the live Folkstage audience in WFMT’s Levin Studio. Chapin has performed on television and Broadway besides touring as a storyteller and musician.

Operatic Rarity from the Met Edmond Rostand’s romantic Cyrano de Bergerac began life as a verse drama and has since been transferred to radio, television, and film. An operatic version appeared in 1936, the creation of Franco Alfano (18751954), probably best remembered today for his completion of Puccini’s Turandot, but a respected composer in his own right of both operas and instrumental music. Marco Armiliato is the conductor for this nearly-forgotten piece of late Italian verismo opera; tenor Roberto Alagna sings the title role with Jennifer Rowley as Roxane.

Joyce DiDonato and the Chicago Symphony Like Franco Alfano – see Operatic Rarity – Giuseppe Martucci is a lateRomantic Italian composer not well known to American audiences. He stands out from his contemporary countrymen, like Puccini and Mascagni, because he never wrote an opera, devoting his talents instead to symphonic works (he was also a virtuoso pianist and a noted conductor). Chicago Symphony music director Riccardo Muti has been a champion of Martucci’s works, and last autumn he introduced Symphony Center audiences to the composer’s only large-scale vocal work, a songcycle with orchestra titled La Canzone dei Ricordi (Song of Memories). These concerts also marked the muchanticipated CSO debut of mezzosoprano Joyce DiDonato. Composed in the 1880s and orchestrated a decade later, the cycle sets seven poems by Rocco Emanuele Pagliara (1855-1914) as a lyrical evocation of love, longing, and nostalgia.

Metropolitan Opera Grand Finale: Renée Fleming in Der Rosenkavalier Just a few weeks ago, superstar soprano Renée Fleming announced that her current appearances as the Marschallin in Richard Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier would be her final onstage opera performances – a circumstance that will give poignant weight to the final radio broadcast of the 2016-17 Met season. Ms. Fleming has been interpreting the lead role of this opera for many seasons, portraying the wife of a Viennese military officer who is dissatisfied with her life and afraid of growing old, so she takes younger men as her lovers. In act one, that young man is Octavian, played by mezzo-soprano Elina Garanca, scion of a noble family, and someone the Marschallin knows will leave her one day. The two are joined by Erin Morley as the youthful and innocent Sophie and by Günther Groissböck as Baron Ochs, the Marschallin’s country cousin. Sebastian Weigle conducts the new Met production, which updates the action from the 18th century to about the year 1914, the start of World War I and the approach of the downfall of Imperial Vienna.

Eric Owens as Wotan
From Lyric Opera: The Ring Begins! Das Rheingold, considered the prelude of Wagner’s four-part Ring cycle, presents several of the major characters and lays out the foundations of the complex plot: the Rhine River’s magic gold, its transformation into a ring by someone who has renounced love in favor of power, the theft of the ring by someone else seeking power, the curse placed on the ring, and some of that curse’s immediate consequences. Lyric Opera of Chicago’s new David Pountney production of the Ring opened with Das Rheingold this past October, and it’s the first offering in our springtime rebroadcast of the Lyric season. Bass-baritone Eric Owens stars as Wotan, chief of the gods, a sometimes-wise individual who’s also revealed as a thief and a deceiver. The South Korean bass Samuel Youn made his American debut in the role of the dwarf Alberich, also a thief, who takes the gold from the Rhine and forces his people to make the ring. Slovakian tenor Stefan Margita takes the pivotal role of Loge, the god of fire who’s also a superb trickster, happily aiding Wotan in his schemes. Conducting is Sir Andrew Davis, Lyric’s music director, who’ll be leading all the upcoming productions of the Ring music dramas.

Live from WFMT: Civitas and Friends For its 2016-17 season, Chicago’s Civitas ensemble decided to explore music from the Czech Republic. Clarinetist J Lawrie Bloom, violinist Yuan-Qing Yu, cellist Kenneth Olsen, and pianist Winston Choi have been collaborating with Pavel Sporcl and the Gipsy Way Ensemble, a Czech Republic group that specializes in music from the Romany tradition. Last January Civitas traveled to Prague for a joint concert, and Gipsy Way is visiting Chicago for another joint performance at the Merit School of Music. After that performance, Kerry Frumkin will welcome both groups to Live from WFMT. Join us for a concert with a difference.

More from Lyric: Donizetti’s Bel-Canto Gem The second production of Lyric Opera’s 2016-17 season was a highly-acclaimed presentation of Lucia di Lammermoor, the bel-canto tragedy based on a novel by Sir Walter Scott. The Russian soprano Albina Shagimuratova was widely praised for her portrayal of the title role, which includes the challenging Mad Scene. Also making a welcome return to the stage of the Civic Opera House was the Polish-born tenor Piotr Beczala, who takes the part of Lucia’s lover, Edgardo. Edgardo is an enemy of Lucia’s family, so she’s forced to marry someone else. The character doing the forcing is her brother, Enrico, portrayed in this production by baritone Quinn Kelsey, an alumnus of Lyric’s Ryan Opera Center. Making his Lyric debut on the podium was the Italian conductor Enrique Mazzola.

The Film Score: Music for Memorial Day Earlier this year, Chicago Tribune film critic Michael Phillips returned to WFMT to present a mini-series about movie musicals leading up to the 2017 Academy Awards presentation. He’s back this month with a special that looks at war movies, and the music written for them. The films depict events of the Civil War, both world wars, the Vietnam War, and the post-9/11 world we inhabit today. Among the films and scores on which he’ll comment are Glory, about African-American volunteer soldiers in the Union Army during the Civil War; Patton starring George C Scott; and Elmer Bernstein’s music for a classic of the World War II era, The Great Escape. He also goes back in time a bit for some of Sir William Walton’s music for Henry V starring Sir Laurence Olivier. We’ll hear some Ennio Morricone music, for Casualties of War, and some recent films including Saving Private Ryan and Zero Dark Thirty.
