The Guide

Dear Member, This month, WFMT is thrilled to make available free to the public a unique and invaluable resource that has been more than 20 years in the making. On May 16, we will launch the Studs Terkel Radio Archive on wfmt.com. It will be one of the world’s great spoken-word collections, consisting of more than 5,600 of Studs’s digitized interview programs that originated at WFMT between 1952 and 1997. Join us on wfmt.com on what would have been Studs’s 106th birthday to enjoy 45 years of his revealing conversations with the celebrated and the unsung…and everyone in between. On WTTW11, dive into an engaging new two-part adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women, which premieres on Mother’s Day and stars Angela Lansbury and Emily Watson. Follow Sue Perkins (The Great British Baking Show) as she begins an emotional four-part trek up Southeast Asia’s Mekong River. And, don’t miss a new Soundstage concert from RSO (Richie Sambora and Orianthi) filmed right here in WTTW’s Grainger Studio. This month we will also launch The Great American Read – a national initiative that will spark a conversation about reading and the books that have inspired, moved, and shaped us. Beginning May 22, join in on the voting for the book you think should be number one. Look for a culminating event in the fall, and get ready to start reading! Finally, we observe Memorial Day with a number of specials, and honor outstanding area educators on the 33rd annual Golden Apple Awards. On wttw.com, explore the incredible longevity of Little Women 150 years after its publication, and learn why its popularity endures despite its reluctant author’s assertion that “she never liked girls or knew many, except [her] sisters.” Also, as The Great American Read reveals its top 100 picks, check out our own list of outstanding Chicago novels, authors, and bookstores you need to visit. And in case simply watching this month’s royal wedding isn’t enough to satisfy your inner Anglophile, take a look back at some other memorable royal weddings on our website. On WFMT, join us on Saturday afternoons to hear Gluck’s Orphée et Eurydice, Verdi’s Rigoletto, and Wagner’s Die Walküre from Lyric Opera. The Chicago Symphony brings us a Baroque concert with a collection of Italian concertos and arias, and during Memorial Day weekend, Marin Alsop leads the CSO in some American music: Gershwin, Barber, and former composer-in-residence Anna Clyne. And be sure to join us on Facebook between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm on Memorial Day for our first-ever WFMT Beach Party live from Theater on the Lake. On wfmt.com, visit WFMT’s Facebook page to watch live video of performances in our studios and around the city, including Dame Myra Hess Concerts at the Chicago Cultural Center. And don’t miss music Carl Grapentine has curated to honor those who have served in our armed forces. Thank you for your continued support, and enjoy the beginning of spring! Sincerely,

Reese Marcusson Chief Operating Officer

Bombshell – The Hedy Lamarr Story: American Masters

The Chinese Exclusion Act: American Experience

The glamorous film siren Hedy Lamarr was also secretly an ingenious inventor. Near the end of her life, tech pioneers discovered that it was her concepts that are now used in WiFi, GPS, and Bluetooth technologies.

This new film documents the events leading to, and continuing impact of, the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act – the only federal legislation in U.S. history ever to single out a specific race and nationality for exclusion from immigration and citizenship.

Saturday Night Drama Series Settle in on Saturday evenings with new episodes of some of WTTW’s most popular series. The Australian comedydrama 800 Words follows a widowed Sydney newspaper columnist and his family who move to a tiny New Zealand town. Father Brown, based on stories by G K Chesterton, features a kindly cleric investigating crimes in his small English village. And Death in Paradise, set on the fictional Caribbean island of Saint Marie, centers on Detective Inspector (and recent widower) Jack Mooney (Ardal O’Hanlon) who struggles to adapt from cold, gray London, as his new team of detectives must likewise adapt to him.

A City at War: Chicago At the beginning of America’s engagement in World War II, President Franklin Roosevelt called on the country to become “an arsenal of democracy” – major producers of war materiel to help defeat the Axis powers. This new film explores how the Windy City answered that call, and how a mutually beneficial relationship between FDR and Chicago mayor Ed Kelly (the original “big city boss”) helped to set everything in motion. The documentary reveals how the Chicago area was transformed into a well-oiled production machine, with every man, woman, and child mobilizing to support the war effort. Narrated by Bill Kurtis.

Arriving in Yunnan’s tropical south-western region of Xishuangbanna, she discovers how this once remote region is now home to a booming tourist industry. Finally, Sue arrives high up on the Tibetan Plateau in Qinghai province, close to the source of the Mekong. 9:00 10 Parks that Changed America See Sat. May 5 at 11:02 pm. The San Francisco Symphony’s Mahler

Relevant Tones Welcomes Stacy Garrop

Bryan Hymel and Ailyn Perez take the lead roles of Gounod’s Romeo and Juliet, in an acclaimed Met production that will conclude the company’s 2017-18 season. The multi-talented operatic artist Placido Domingo conducts.

A critic recently called San Francisco Symphony music director Michael Tilson Thomas a “perfect” Mahler conductor. One SFS special this month finds him and his musicians interpreting the composer’s Ninth, his last completed symphony.

Garrop’s works are often focused on musical storytelling. Her Mythology Symphony evokes two legendary ancient Greek figures: the monstrous Medusa and the steadfast Penelope. Garrop talks about her newly recorded work with host Seth Boustead.

Lyric Opera’s Orphée This production that opened Lyric Opera of Chicago’s 2017-18 season was almost universally hailed for its imaginative fusion of ballet and opera, in the historic first-ever collaboration between Lyric and the Joffrey Ballet. But the soloists, chorus, and orchestra for Gluck’s most famous stage work were highly praised too, so there’ll be a lot to hear and enjoy even without the visual element of dancing. Lisa Flynn and Roger Pines co-host WFMT’s rebroadcast, in which tenor Dmitry Korchak portrays Orphée, cast as a ballet director whose #1 dancer, Eurydice, is also his beloved wife. Eurydice is sung by Andriana Chuchman, and the third principal role is taken by Lauren Snouffer as Amour, who encourages Orphée to try and bring Eurydice back from the spirit world. (The ballet they have been rehearsing, in the story, is inspired by Arnold Böcklin’s painting “The Isle of the Dead.”) Harry Bicket, a musician who specializes in the music of the 18th century, was the guest conductor for Lyric Opera’s chorus and orchestra. And Chicago audiences might be interested to know that Orphée et Eurydice won critical acclaim again, when Los Angeles Opera presented it earlier this year: also in partnership with the Joffrey.
