The Guide

Dear Member,

The Member Magazine for WTTW and WFMT Renée Crown Public Media Center 5400 North Saint Louis Avenue Chicago, Illinois 60625

Thank you for your viewership, listenership, and continued support of WTTW and WFMT. Now more than ever, we believe it is vital that you can turn to us for trusted news and information, and high quality educational and entertaining programming whenever and wherever you want it. We have developed our May schedule with this in mind. On WTTW, explore the personal, firsthand perspectives of people whose lives have been upended by COVID-19 in Chicago in FIRSTHAND: Coronavirus. This new series of stories produced and released on wttw.com and our social media channels has been packaged into a one-hour special for television that will premiere on May 18 at 9:00 pm. Also, settle in for the new two-night special Asian Americans to commemorate Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. As America becomes more diverse, and more divided while facing unimaginable challenges, this film focuses a new lens on U.S. history and the ongoing role that Asian Americans have played. On wttw.com, discover and learn about Chicago’s Japanese Culture Center established in 1977 in Chicago by Aikido Shihan (Teacher of Teachers) and Zen Master Fumio Toyoda to make the crafts, philosophical riches, and martial arts of Japan available to Chicagoans. On WFMT, I hope you are enjoying Maestro’s Choice: For All Music Lovers in These Difficult Times, our 6-part collaboration with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in response to COVID-19 and the stay-at-home order. Riccardo Muti, music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra since 2010, curated the programs and his selections offer a meaningful connection to beautiful, classical music while live performances have been interrupted during the pandemic. On wfmt.com in recognition of Mother’s Day and the spring season, enjoy our playlist of music inspired by and dedicated to mothers and grandmothers, and our look at music’s long relationship with flora and the natural world. Thanks again for your support. Sincerely,

Sandra Cordova Micek President & CEO

Karita Mattila

From the Metropolitan Opera: Katya Kabanova Soprano Karita Mattila takes the title role in Leos Janacek’s Katya Kabanova, a tragic tale of infidelity and overwhelming guilt, first performed in the composer’s home city of Brno, Moravia – now part of the Czech Republic – in 1921. The Met’s performance is from 2004, and also includes Magdalena Kozena and Judith Forst in the cast, with Jiri Belohlavek conducting. The plot comes from The Storm by the Russian playwright Alexander Ostrovsky; Janacek’s musical transformation of it includes a powerful orchestral storm scene in Act 3.
