THE GUIDE

The Member Magazine for WTTW and WFMT

FRIDAY, MAY 21 8 PM ALSO INSIDE On WFMT, we’ll recognize Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month with a broad range of music selections and composers including Paul Chihara, a Japanese-American composer and Seattle native who spent three years of his childhood with his family in an internment camp.

From the President & CEO Dear Member, This month, WTTW will bring to life the investigative journalist, activist, and suffragist Ida B. Wells as never before with a primetime documentary and companion website. Following up The Great Chicago Fire, our next Chicago Stories special paints a deeply humanizing portrait of a woman who was uncompromising in her quest for racial justice and equity, and places Ida B. Wells’ life and legacy in the context of our present moment. Discover how the battles for civil rights that Wells fought in her lifetime are ongoing, and how contemporary journalists and activists continue to draw inspiration from her work. On page 4, meet the program’s writer and producer Stacy Robinson, who reflects on what made Wells a trailblazer and why her work is more relevant than ever. Also in May, we’ll premiere the new PBS KIDS series Donkey Hodie, filmed in WTTW’s very own Grainger Studio. Inspired by the funny, quirky side of children’s television pioneer Fred Rogers, this imaginative series follows the adventures of Donkey Hodie, the granddaughter of the original Donkey Hodie character from Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. For Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, WTTW will present new specials on author Amy Tan, Vietnamese American chef Tu David Phu, statesman Norman Mineta, and pioneering meteorologist Ted Fujita. On wttw.com, as racist violence against Asian Americans escalates, learn about the student-led campaign to institute Asian American studies programs in Chicago schools. Also, meet Mary Anne Mohanraj, a Sri Lankan-born, Chicagoland-based writer and University of Illinois professor who has heightened awareness of her homeland by working in genres from science fiction and fantasy to cookbooks while also supporting South Asian writers, advancing speculative fiction, and working on a video game about ancient Sri Lanka. WFMT will also recognize Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month with a broad range of music selections with a focus on Paul Chihara, a Japanese American composer and Seattle native who spent three years of his childhood with his family in an internment camp. On wfmt.com, meet 11 Asian American composers including Bright Sheng, who served as Lyric Opera of Chicago’s composer-in-residence from 1989 to 1992. WFMT will also explore the stories of Asian American composers and musicians such as Yo-Yo Ma and Midori who have changed the face of classical music, and sits down with instructors at Chicago’s Japanese Cultural Center for a discussion about classical dance and music that originated in their country. Thank you for spending this spring with WTTW and WFMT and, as always, for your support.

A Q&A with Stacy Robinson

Writer and Producer of Ida B. Wells: A Chicago Stories Special by DANIEL HAUTZINGER

I

da B. Wells is having a moment. A stretch of Chicago’s Congress Parkway was renamed for her a few years ago. Last year, she was awarded a special Pulitzer Prize citation for her "outstanding and courageous reporting.” She’s the subject of a new book by her great-granddaughter. It’s all for a good reason. Wells pioneered investigative journalism techniques to investigate lynching in the South, and resisted segregation on transit decades before Rosa Parks. She was an outspoken suffragist and civil rights leader, and was one of the founders of the NAACP.

On Friday, May 21 at 8:00 pm, WTTW will debut Ida B. Wells: A Chicago Stories Special, a new documentary and companion website examining her life and work. The documentary’s writer and producer Stacy Robinson spoke with us about the project and the relevance of this Chicago leader today.

The Guide: Why is it a good time to revisit Ida B. Wells’ life and work?

Robinson: I’m not from Chicago originally – I’m from California – but I’ve been in Chicago for well over twenty years. Like many Stacy Robinson: Part of it is that, with the Chicagoans do, I saw Ida B. Wells’ name on Black Lives Matter movement, I think that schools or on public housing, and I would there’s an aspect of America’s race rela- say, “Who is this woman?” And I learned tions that has really come to the surface. that she was a woman of color and a civil We’re looking at the past in a different way, rights activist who lived much of her life at how America and its race relations have in Chicago. changed or not changed. And I think Ida’s work really resonates with people today as we look back at the past, and it has a new importance. I also think that truth in journalism is under attack like never before, so the importance of Ida’s investigative work in journalism resonates. A lot of people don’t realize that she was such a strong investigative journalist, and really one of the first. I think as people start to look at where the fruits of investigative journalism came from, how important they are, and how they can really impact a society and make a difference, her name comes to the forefront. So, people are learning about her afresh.

The Guide: Does she offer lessons for today? Robinson: Absolutely. She almost serves as a guidebook for what can be done by a single person, and what is in a single person’s grasp. The way she approached investigative journalism—those rules and tenets are still used today. She collected data by looking at newspapers from across America to find out where lynchings were going to occur. She traveled and interviewed and spoke to people. She came back and made spreadsheets and put that data together. She really looked at civil rights as sort of a universal issue. She didn’t look at justice and civil rights from the moral standpoints of the day. She didn’t even look at them from the perspective of Black and white, or sexual orientation. That was pretty groundbreaking for her time. She looked at civil rights as human rights, and I think that’s important today. The Guide: What drew you to Ida B. Wells as a subject?

Stacy Robinson Writer and Producer, Ida B. Wells: A Chicago Stories Special

I really started to become more aware of her when I started to read articles, and then even more so during the campaign around the street renaming. I started to become intrigued by her. I had spoken to my sister, who’s also a journalist, about how great she was. As a documentarian, as an African American woman, and as a woman, the opportunity to bring to light the story of a Black woman in history in an hour-long program is like a gift. Women have not gotten enough recognition. Their roles in history are often overlooked; they’re often pushed aside. That is very much true of Ida B. Wells. If she had been an African American man in the late 1890s and early 1900s, her status in American history would be very different. She would be like W.E.B. Du Bois.

The Guide: How does she inspire you, as a documentarian yourself? Robinson: There’s a quote by her that is very famous: “The way to right wrongs is to turn the light of truth upon them.” That is an inspiring thought to me. That means that the work I do has value; and her life proves it. There’s a great opportunity to change things by bringing them to people’s attention. The Guide: Was there anything you discovered about Wells’ life that surprised you? Robinson: The things that she struggled with in the 1890s and 1900s as a woman were very similar to challenges that contemporary women struggle with today. She was a mother of six – a working mom who had young children, so she had to get nannies. She was taking her babies and young children with her on speaking engagements. She was juggling just as women are juggling today, and she was equally conflicted about it. There were times when she chose not to do the work, to stay home with her children. And she got pushback from it from other people who were working in the movement who would say, “How could you? How could you desert us?” That resonated with me for sure. The Guide: How is Wells’ story a Chicago story? Robinson: She is very well known for work that she did before she came to Chicago. But what people don’t realize is that she was in Chicago for longer, and she was a civil rights crusader for her entire time here in Chicago. Ida B. Wells was a groundbreaking pioneer, and she would fight for things before anyone decided they were important enough to fight for. And then she would move on to the next thing or another battle. There’s a lot more to her life, and a lot of that took place in Chicago. EXPLORE THE WEBSITE: wttw.com/wells This interview has been edited and condensed for clarity.

Programmer’s Picks Introductions with Robbie Ellis: Pianist Joshua Mhoon

Exploring Music: Sir William Walton

Listening to Singers with Oliver Camacho: Memorial Day

After making his WFMT debut at age 12 in 2015, young pianist Joshua Mhoon returns to Introductions. The Hyde Park 17-year-old presents Guido Agosti’s fearsome transcription of Stravinsky’s Firebird, and R. Nathaniel Dett’s complete Enchantment Suite.

Host Bill McGlaughlin traces the arc of the composer’s life, focusing on Walton’s love of different musical genres, and his associations with Jascha Heifetz, Paul Hindemith, Sir Laurence Olivier, and Thomas Beecham. Join Bill for a week steeped in British music of the 20th century.

Baritone John Brancy and pianist Peter Dugan join Oliver to present selections from their acclaimed album A Silent Night: A WWI Memorial in Song and to preview their new album The Journey Home, an homage to the centennial of World War I.

From the Metropolitan Opera: Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde Met audiences were fascinated by Mariusz Treliński’s gripping, visionary production of Wagner’s epic opera. In the daunting title roles of the doomed lovers are Nina Stemme and Stuart Skelton. René Pape is King Marke, betrayed not only by Isolde but by Tristan, the man he most trusts and loves like a son. With Ekaterina Gubanova as Isolde’s confidante Brangäne and Evgeny Nikitin as Kurwenal, Tristan’s loyal lieutenant. Simon Rattle conducts Wagner’s monumental score in this performance from October 8, 2016.

Bill features Walton’s love of different musical genres; Film music from Henry V, the poem Façade set to music performed by the London Mozart Players narrated by Prunella Scales (Sybil from BBC’s Fawlty Towers), the orchestral march Crown Imperial, the cantata Belshazzar’s Feast, and his viola concerto, which is studied and performed by all serious violists. This is a week steeped in British music of the 20th century. 8:00 Music from Nichols Hall 26

From the Metropolitan Opera: Bellini’s I Puritani For his final masterpiece before a premature death at age 34, Bellini created an opera that relies heavily on a quartet of superb bel canto singers. In this performance from February 2017, tenor Javier Camarena is Arturo. Diana Damrau’s Elvira slowly unravels in three achingly beautiful mad scenes, while Alexey Markov brings his rich baritone to Riccardo, the unsuccessful suitor for Elvira’s hand. Luca Pisaroni is Elivira’s loving uncle Giorgio, and Maurizio Benini leads the Met Orchestra and Chorus.

Mozart wrote countless concertos, many of which are sprightly and elegant to the ear, even at the fingers of an eightyear-old. While exploring various sounds into his teens, Mozart was so heavily inspired by Johann Christian Bach’s writing that he reinterpreted it, making it his own. Bach and Mozart bonded over music, as well as over tricky keyboard games. 8:00 Music from Nichols Hall 10:00 Evenings with Kerry Frumkin

You’ll hear all the usual suspects (Copland, Gershwin, Stravinsky, and Schoenberg), but we’ll also weave in beautiful and intriguing music from Peter Menin, Augustus Hailstork, Charles Wuorinen, Joan Tower, Charlie Parker, and, yes, Fats Domino. We’ll end the week with an elegiac symphonic work from George Walker, the first African American composer to win the Pulitzer Prize. 8:00 Music from Nichols Hall 10:00 Evenings with Kerry Frumkin
