Air Check Dear Member, This month, I’m excited to announce some news for the WTTW Kids in our audience! Coming from our very own backyard, a new children’s series will make its national debut on the day before Thanksgiving. Nature Cat, a co-production from WTTW and local creators David and Adam Rudman of Spiffy Pictures, follows Fred (voiced by Saturday Night Live star Taran Killam), a house cat with no instincts for nature but a strong desire to explore the great outdoors. In each episode, Fred transforms into “Nature Cat” and joins with a star-studded group of animal friends for intrepid adventures designed to inspire kids aged 3-8 to go outside and play. Kids and families can also enjoy online and mobile games, hands-on activities, and parent resources, and of course, watch the show anywhere they are. As the temperatures drop, WTTW11 offers up a wide variety of diversions to keep you warm. The month begins with two new miniseries: Earth’s Natural Wonders and NOVA: The Making of North America. Ball of Confusion recalls the turbulent election year of 1968. We pay homage to Broadway legends Chita Rivera and the composers Kander & Ebb. We mark Veterans Day with three thought-provoking programs – Independent Lens: Stray Dog; Iwo Jima: From Combat to Comrades; and Debt of Honor: Disabled Veterans in American History. This year, we celebrate the 30th anniversary of The Golden Apple Awards for Excellence in Teaching with our annual broadcast honoring ten outstanding area educators. Online only, the crew from The Good Stuff examines all things weird, and David Manilow interviews local culinary notables on Chat, Please! Eddie Murphy receives the 18th Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. Two specials explore different aspects of the origins of Thanksgiving Day and on Thanksgiving night, we bring you the Alice’s Restaurant 50th Anniversary Concert. We end the month on a high note with an exciting all-new Geoffrey Baer special: Chicago’s South Side. WTTW’s popular tour guide spent this past summer crisscrossing the area, talking to local residents and eliciting fascinating stories of how their neighborhoods came to be and what it’s like to live there today. We’ll also launch a companion website with more stories that explore all four corners of the South Side, extra video, and ideas for what you can do in these neighborhoods today. WFMT will present the openings of two very different Lyric Opera productions: Alban Berg’s dark drama Wozzeck in a new production led by Sir Andrew Davis, and Franz Lehar’s frothy romance The Merry Widow starring Renée Fleming and Thomas Hampson. A stage work drawing on the traditions of both opera and musical theater is Leonard Bernstein’s Candide, which we’ll hear from New York’s Glimmerglass Festival. Also this month, we’ll feature Taloa, an exploration of American Indian and Maori music hosted by Chickasaw composer Jerod Tate. You can experience all of this, and much more, on our website and in WFMT’s newly redesigned apps for Apple and Android devices. All of us at WTTW and WFMT are truly thankful for you and your generous support of everything we do. Happy Thanksgiving! Sincerely,
Dan Schmidt President & CEO

2-for-1 Tickets to The Dance Center The Dance Center of Columbia College Chicago presents the Chicago debut of Camille A. Brown & Dancers performing their newest work, BLACK GIRL: Linguistic Play, which reveals the complexity of carving out a self-defined identity as a black female in urban American culture. With original music compositions, performed live by pianist Scott Patterson and bass guitarist Tracy Wormworth, Brown uses the rhythmic play of African-American dance vernacular, including social dancing, double dutch, steppin’, tap, Juba, ring shout, and gesture, as the black woman’s domain to evoke childhood memories of selfdiscovery. From play to protest, the performers come into their identities, from childhood innocence to girlhood awareness to maturity – all the while shaped by their environments, the bonds of sisterhood and society at large. Performances are November 5-7 at 7:30 pm at The Dance Center, 1306 S. Michigan Avenue in Chicago. Cristian Macelaru, conductor-in-residence of the Philadelphia Orchestra, made his Chicago Symphony debut in 2012. He and the orchestra are joined by acclaimed actor John Lithgow narrating Stravinsky’s A Soldier’s Tale.
Zygmunt Stojowski (1870-1946) was acclaimed as a composer, pianist, and teacher. Gunther Schuller (1925-2015) created classical scores and led the New England Conservatory. Documentaries this month explore their creativity.

Lyric Opera’s Wozzeck After opening its 2015-16 season with two comedies, Lyric Opera of Chicago turns to 20th-century tragedy with its new production of Alban Berg’s Wozzeck, frequently cited on short lists of significant works of modern musical theater. Sir Andrew Davis will conduct, and the stage director is Sir David McVicar. The opera was first seen at the Berlin State Opera in 1925. Berg worked on its composition between 1917 and 1922, and its story of a soldier profoundly alienated from his surroundings followed hard on the heels of his own unhappy military experiences during World War I. In addition to suffering abuse and ridicule from his fellow soldiers and superior officers, the character of Wozzeck is further afflicted by his unhappy relationship with Marie, his unfaithful mistress, and tormented by his inability to care for her, for their child, or even for himself. The cast is headed by Tomasz Konieczny and Angela Denoke; Peter Van De Graaff and Roger Pines will co-host WFMT’s live broadcast.

Thomas Hampson: Viewing History and Culture Through Song The Hampsong Foundation’s radio series Song: Mirror of the World continues in November by exploring the ways in which art-song composition reflected the political and cultural history of 19th-century Europe. Paris: City of Light and Forging A National Consciousness examine the effects of mid-century revolutions and the rise of musical nationalism in a variety of European countries. After Wagner looks at the effect Richard Wagner’s music had on his contemporaries, and Fin de Siècle looks forward to the artistic turbulence that affected both sides of the Atlantic at the approach of the 20th century. Thomas Hampson hosts each broadcast, based on research by Benjamin Binder, Heather Platt, Susan Youens, and Sheila Gaffney.

Opera from Glimmerglass The Glimmerglass Festival of opera, musical theater, concerts, lectures, and master classes takes place each summer in Cooperstown, NY, a site more often connected with baseball. Glimmerglass celebrated its 40th anniversary in the summer of 2015. Its artist-in-residence, bass-baritone Eric Owens, is well known to Lyric Opera and WFMT audiences. Owens stars in Verdi’s Macbeth, the first of three Glimmerglass productions being syndicated by the WFMT Radio Network. The second is a Vivaldi rarity, Cato in Utica, celebrating a hero from the pre-Empire days of ancient Rome. Finally we’ll hear Leonard Bernstein’s rollicking Candide, whose cast features several Glimmerglass Festival Young Artists.

Michael Ippolito
New Music from the CSO American composer Michael Ippolito studied at the Juilliard School with John Corigliano and has also performed jazz. His Nocturne, originally a trio for flute, violin, and piano, dates from 2011 and was inspired by a painting by the Spanish surrealist Joan Miró. In commenting on the orchestral version, Ippolito also notes that he was inspired by the piano nocturnes of Chopin and John Field and by what he calls “the creaking and sliding night music of Bartók.” Edo de Waart and the Chicago Symphony open a concert with Nocturne and continue it with Brahms’ Symphony #3, plus Mozart’s Piano Concerto #25, for which the guest soloist, Orion Weiss, provided his own first-movement cadenza.

Renée Fleming
Lyric’s Merry Widow Is Renée Fleming! Lyric Opera’s second November opening is Franz Lehár’s light-hearted operetta The Merry Widow. It stars Renée Fleming as Hanna Glawari, the title lady, whose fortune is so huge that her tiny homeland’s Parisian diplomatic corps is intent on keeping it in native hands by making sure she takes one of her own countrymen as her second husband. Song and dance accompany the ins and outs of the plot, which concludes with both true love and political policy triumphant. Fleming first sang in this production at the Metropolitan Opera last season. She’s joined by Thomas Hampson as Count Danilo, and Sir Andrew Davis will conduct. Peter Van De Graaff and Roger Pines co-host the live opening-night broadcast.

Michelle de Young
The New York Philharmonic This Week: Honoring Elliott Carter American composer Elliott Carter (1908-2012) kept on writing music well into his 90s. One such late composition was Of Rewaking, a song-cycle for soprano and orchestra based on texts by William Carlos Williams, whose poetry the composer long admired. Of Rewaking, featuring mezzo-soprano Michelle de Young, was part of an all-American program led by David Robertson as part of one of the New York Philharmonic’s Hear and Now presentations that combine both new and familiar works. This concert opened with Copland’s classic Appalachian Spring ballet score and also included Bernstein’s first symphony, Jeremiah, plus the Carter cycle, and Rapture, a work by former Philharmonic composerin-residence Christopher Rouse, a colorful and virtuosic score that spotlights the orchestra’s woodwinds, its violinists, and its timpanists.

Franco Faccio
Opera Southwest: An Italian Operatic Rarity Franco Faccio, 1840 to 1891, was a slightly older contemporary of Giacomo Puccini, but is far less well remembered today. His opera Amleto (Hamlet) is set to a libretto by Arrigo Boito, who also wroto libretti for Verdi and Ponchielli and was a composer in his own right. Amleto, revived by Opera Southwest artistic director Anthony Barrese, recently received its American premiere from the company, which is based in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and performs at that city’s National Hispanic Cultural Center. Barrese conducts a cast headed by Alex Richardson as Hamlet and Abla Lynn Hamza as Ophelia. The production is being syndicated by the WFMT Radio Network.
