Filthy Cities
An Evening with Valerie Jarrett
This film highlights an innovative experiment in democracy that gives ordinary Chicagoans direct say over local public projects and monies. Pioneered in Chicago, participatory budgeting is rapidly spreading across the country, and even the White House recently made it one of its key recommendations for open government.
This series brings to life the murky histories of iconic cities, taking the travelogue in a new direction. Using state-of-the-art computer generated imagery, this special program goes back in time to medieval London, revolutionary Paris, and 19th-century New York.
This special provides a unique inside look at civic leader and businesswoman Valerie Jarrett, Senior Advisor to President Barack Obama. Taped at the Art Institute of Chicago and hosted by NPR journalist Michele Norris, the program explores Jarrett’s fascinatingly rich life and career, as well as the legacy of her storied family.

Count Me In This new documentary highlights an innovative experiment in direct democracy that gives ordinary Chicagoans direct say over local public projects and monies, through participatory budgeting. The film tells the stories of regular Chicagoans who are making an impact in their neighborhoods by pitching ideas for street repairs, bike lanes, or community gardens. But city agencies are slow to warm to the process, and only a handful of aldermen have been willing to try participatory budgeting, despite the fact that residents believe it’s a great tool for community building.

Ryan Opera Center Recital
Charlie Parker’s Yardbird
Joining the San Francisco Symphony in its November broadcast sequence are pianists Yefim Bronfman and Peter Serkin, playing Brahms and Mozart; and violinists Anne-Sophie Mutter and Joshua Bell interpret Brahms and Tchaikovsky.
Ann Toomey and Jesse Donner chose unusual repertory for their WFMT Levin Studio recital: rarities by Joseph Marx and Ernesto Lecuona, excerpts from the stage works of Lehar and Kurt Weill, and Schubert’s haunting supernatural ballad Erlkönig (The Erl-King).
Composed by Daniel Schnyder, produced by Opera Philadelphia, set in the Birdland jazz club, the opera finds the great saxophonist revisiting the inspirations, demons, and women who fueled his creative genius.

Rossini’s Larcenous Magpie Almost never performed in modern times, La Gazza Ladra (The Thieving Magpie), Gioacchino Rossini’s 1817 opera for La Scala in Milan, is best remembered for its brilliant overture that opens with a snaredrum solo. This sets the opera’s military background. Two soldiers are returning from war to their home village: one eager to marry his sweetheart, and the other that sweetheart’s father, charged with desertion, running from the authorities. The young woman, Ninetta, in her attempts to help and hide her father, is accused of theft from her employers, a capital crime. The large cast includes a sympathetic jailer and also a lecherous politician, the village mayor. And yes, there is a magpie, portrayed by Meg Gillentine in Glimmerglass Opera’s recent production.

Vasily Petrenko
Vasily Petrenko: CSO Guest Conductor Vasily Petrenko studied at Russia’s St. Petersburg Conservatory and was tutored in the art of conducting by Mariss Jansons and Esa-Pekka Salonen. After making a 2004 debut with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, he was named that British orchestra’s principal conductor. His ongoing relationship with the RLPO has included recordings on the Naxos label and appearances at the BBC Promenade Concerts. His relationship with Norway’s Oslo Philharmonic began in 2009, and he is now that ensemble’s chief conductor. When he came to the Chicago Symphony as a guest conductor, joined by guest pianist Paul Lewis, the program contained Beethoven’s Emperor concerto, the overture In the South by Elgar, and a favorite piece by Rachmaninoff, his Symphonic Dances.

Lyric Opera’s First Production of The Trojans Given its length, its large cast, the demanding music, and the need for sets and staging to re-create two major cities of the ancient world, a production of Les Troyens (The Trojans) by Hector Berlioz is a major undertaking for any opera company. Lyric Opera of Chicago presents a new production of The Trojans this fall; Sir Andrew Davis will conduct, and the pivotal role of Aeneas will be taken by Brandon Jovanovich. Based on Virgil’s Aeneid, the story begins in Troy, and in the first part of the opera the focus is on Cassandra, to be played by soprano Christine Goerke. Cassandra is the Trojan princess given the gift of prophecy by an amorous god; when she rejected his love, he cursed his gift by making sure no one would ever believe anything she said. Thus Cassandra predicts doom for her city and its people and is ignored. Aeneas, his followers, and most of his family escape the fall of Troy, to sail the Mediterranean westward to the city of Carthage, and now the focus moves to soprano Sophie Koch, who’ll sing the role of Queen Dido. Aeneas and the queen fall in love, but his destiny forces him to move onward to Italy, where he’s to become the (mythical) founder of the Roman Empire. In addition to the featured soloists, in The Trojans the chorus to play a major role (Lyric Opera Chorus: Michael Black, chorus master). Lisa Flynn and Roger Pines will co-host WFMT’s broadcast.

John Luther Adams
Music by John Luther Adams John Luther Adams’ Become Ocean won both a Pulitzer (2014) and a Grammy (2015). An earlier piece, The Light That Fills the World, was first conceived for chamber ensemble; the composer orchestrated it in 2000. Like a number of his works, it conveys a strong sense of place, since he takes major inspiration from the landscapes, seascapes, and native traditions of Alaska, where he lives. Musically, he’s been influenced by such composers as Steve Reich and Philip Glass. The title of The Light That Fills the World comes from an Inuit poem and is meant to convey the joy of the return of springtime sunlight after the long, dark Arctic winter.

Ferruccio Furlanetto
Lyric Opera and Don Quixote As Lyric’s website puts it, “More than half a century before Man of La Mancha, [Jules] Massenet brought Cervantes’ universally-beloved dreamer Don Quixote to the operatic stage.” The title role is one of the outstanding characterizations in all of French opera, and it’ll be interpreted at the Civic Opera House by bass Ferruccio Furlanetto. Nicola Alaimo portrays the Don’s squire, Sancho Panza, and Clementine Margaine sings the role of Dulcinea. Sir Andrew Davis will conduct; WFMT’s live opening-night broadcast will be cohosted by Lisa Flynn and Roger Pines.

Georges Enesco
Exploring Music Explores Enesco In France, where he spent a large part of his life, the name is Georges Enesco; in his native Romania, whose culture and traditions he transmuted into music, the name is George Enescu. The Romanian village where he was born in 1881 is now named for him. As a seven-year-old, he became the youngest student ever admitted to the Vienna Conservatory, so perhaps “child prodigy” is too mild a term. He began his career as a violinist, soon encompassing composition and conducting as well. Among his students was the great violinist Yehudi Menuhin, who said of him, simply and unequivocally, that he was an extraordinary human being. Bill McGlaughlin will trace Enesco’s multifaceted and fascinating career during an upcoming week of Exploring Music.

Louis Andriessen
On Relevant Tones, A Louis Andriessen Appreciation Relevant Tones host Seth Boustead takes note during November of the tremendous influence the Dutch composer Louis Andriessen (b 1939) has had on younger composers. A prolific composer, and longtime teacher at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, this scion of an extraordinary musical family received his most recent accolade in 2011, winning the Grawemeyer Award for Musical Composition for his multimedia opera La Commedia, after Dante. Seth notes that the members of the influential New York collective Bang on A Can have been especially inspired by Andriessen, and he’ll trace their influence also on the music of our day.

Nina Stemme
Fidelio from San Francisco In 2015 the San Francisco Symphony and its music director, Michael Tilson Thomas, presented a concert staging of Fidelio as part of its Beethoven Festival. Among Beethoven’s many achievements this is one of the high points. His only opera, it took nearly a decade for it to reach its final form amid many revisions and disappointments. The title role of Fidelio-Leonore is portrayed by Nina Stemme, with Brandon Jovanovich as her unjustlyimprisoned husband, Florestan, and Nicholas Phan and Joelle Harvey as the work’s other pair of lovers, Jaquino and Marzelline. Also in the cast are Luca Pisaroni, Alan Held, and Kevin Langan. Highlights of the score include the famous Prisoners’ Chorus, Florestan’s mournful solo aria, and the love duet between him and Leonore at the end of Act Two. This opera performance is part of the annual American Opera series.
