JOHN LEGUIZAMO’S

ROAD TO BROADWAY Fri Nov 16 at 9 pm

November 2018 ALSO INSIDE This month on WFMT, join us for special music and listener dedications to commemorate Thanksgiving, and we’ll honor the centenary of the Armistice that ended World War I.

From the President & CEO Dear Member, One of the most distinctive aspects of public media is its focus on the arts – we bring you right to the stage of world-class theatre, music, and dance. On Friday nights this month, you’ll have front-row seats to the very best Broadway has to offer, including An American in Paris The Musical and Rodgers & Hammerstein’s The Sound of Music, as well as documentaries about the making of John Leguizamo’s Tony-nominated play Latin History for Morons and the artistry of Tony-winning director/producer Harold Prince. And if you miss one, don’t forget that you can watch all of these Great Performances specials on wttw.com. Also on WTTW11 and wttw.com/watch this month, explore the animal kingdom with a variety of new nature programs. Follow three young classical musicians who learn there is strength in numbers in Hear Us, and join us for an array of other new music specials. Also, the teams from Chicago Tonight and PBS NewsHour offer in-depth coverage of the midterm elections; Ann Curry returns with more poignant reunions on We’ll Meet Again, and NOVA takes us inside this summer’s miraculous Thai Cave Rescue. On wttw.com, discover Chicago’s Native American community and trace their history and legacy as Native America premieres. And learn more about a vanishing language and efforts to save it in a story about Kartemquin Films’ Keep Talking. On WFMT, wfmt.com/listen, and the WFMT app, join us for two more San Francisco Opera productions for November Saturday afternoons, plus two blockbuster Rossini works: Semiramide from OperaDelaware, and William Tell from Opera Southwest. We’ll have special music to commemorate Thanksgiving – also tune in on the holiday for listener dedications – and earlier in the month, to honor the centenary of the Armistice that ended World War I. And to learn more about the history of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, we’ll hear from longtime CSO music director Frederick Stock. Each week, check out the WFMT Facebook page for live video where you can hear and see performances in action. During this month of Thanksgiving, we are so thankful for your continuing support. Sincerely,

Sandra Cordova Micek President & CEO

The film reveals how they are reaching back to traditional concepts of justice in order to reduce incarceration rates, foster greater safety for their communities, and create a more positive future for their youth. By addressing the root causes of crime, they are modeling restorative systems that are working, and mainstream courts across the country are beginning to incorporate indigenous customs and beliefs into their justice systems. And those values compel us to take care of each other, our families, and our country.” The November 27 event will also include a discussion. For more information, please visit wttw.com/events.

The Haunted Music of George Crumb on Relevant Tones

Exploring Music: Music for Graham

Susanna Phillips is featured in Barber’s Knoxville, Summer of 1915, in a performance by the Milwaukee Symphony. And the CSO presents Aaron Copland’s A Lincoln Portrait, with narration by John Malkovich.

The avant-garde American composer uses unusual sounds and tone colors to achieve his effects in orchestral, chamber, and vocal works. Relevant Tones host Seth Boustead samples them.

Thursday, November 1, 10:00 pm and Sunday, November 4, 8:00 pm

Friday, November 2, 10:00 pm

Choreographer Martha Graham collaborated with a “who’s who” of 20th-century American composers: Copland, Barber, William Schuman, and Gian-Carlo Menotti are just a few. Bill McGlaughlin examines the Graham effect.

Honoring the Armistice Centenary At the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, in 1918, the nations that had been fighting for four bloodsoaked years signed an Armistice to end World War One. The 100th anniversary of this document is being observed this year. On WFMT we’ll have music at various times over the Veterans Day weekend (November 10-12) that was written during or right around the war years, or that makes reference to wars and lesser conflicts in other ways. A specific memorial program will be featured on With Heart and Voice. Bill McGlaughlin will also devote a week of Exploring Music to the theme Music in Time of War. Nicholas Phan, founder and director of the Collaborative Arts Institute of Chicago and a noted operatic and concert tenor, will perform songs of the World War One era on Live from WFMT. And we’ll also hear Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem – which, although it commemorates events of World War II, uses poetry written by Wilfred Owen in response to World War One.

OperaDelaware: Semiramide OperaDelaware was founded in 1945 in Wilmington, making its home in that city’s Grand Opera House, which dates from 1871. Last year the company celebrated the 225th anniversary of the birth of Gioachino Rossini (1792-1868) with performances of La Cenerentola, the Petite Messe Solennelle, and the melodramatic Semiramide, set in ancient Babylon. The youthful cast was headed by Lindsay Ohse as Queen Semiramide and Aleksandra Romano as Arsace, with Rossini specialist Anthony Barrese conducting.

Frank Almond

Milwaukee Symphony Onstage on Thanksgiving Former Milwaukee Symphony music director Andreas Delfs returned not long ago to lead a concert that opened with three favorite excerpts from Mendelssohn’s Midsummer Night’s Dream music. MSO concertmaster Frank Almond then gave the Midwest premiere of the new violin concerto by American composer Pierre Jalbert, a faculty member at Rice University. The concerto was a co-commission from the MSO, the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, and the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra. Delfs ended the concert with A Sea Symphony by Ralph Vaughan Williams for soloists, chorus, and orchestra. First performed in 1910, the work is set to poetry from Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass.

Relevant Tones: On the Guitar Guitarist Nels Cline is a jazz artist who has also played in a wide variety of pop, country, and rock bands, notably Wilco, for which he’s been the guitar player since 2004. He’s also a classical composer. He’ll be a guest of Relevant Tones host Seth Boustead, with whom he’ll discuss his compositional style, and the difficulties – or opportunities – of making the transition from jazz to classical. They’ll also talk about the dangers of trying to classify music. A varied artist with a unique perspective, and a lot of music for Seth to sample as well.
