From the President & CEO Dear Member, This month, WTTW will bring you a film about the transformative power of education. College Behind Bars follows twelve incarcerated men and women who hope to turn their lives around by earning a college degree, as we follow their four-year journey through the famously rigorous Bard Prison Initiative. Join us on two consecutive nights for a compelling documentary on America’s criminal justice system. Also on WTTW, The Chaperone reunites three talents from Downton Abbey – actor Elizabeth McGovern, series creator Julian Fellowes, and director Michael Engler – for this 1920s era story of a Kansas woman who accompanies an aspiring teen dancer on a tumultuous trip to New York City. A new series on WTTW Kids, Xavier Riddle and the Secret Museum, introduces children aged 4-7 to historical figures. On wttw.com, learn more about the small-town fraud that went on in Dixon, Illinois in our interview with the filmmaker of the documentary, All the Queen’s Horses. WFMT will present a live performance from New York’s Carnegie Hall by Riccardo Muti and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. And in observance of Veterans Day, Chicago Tribune film critic Michael Phillips will present his sampling of music from war-themed movies old and new. And visit wfmt.com for special Thanksgiving features – including playlists, quizzes, and recipes to pair with classical music. In this month of thanksgiving, WTTW and WFMT are grateful for your support. Sincerely,
Sandra Cordova Micek President & CEO

Tuesday, November 19, 7:30 pm WFMT is partnering with the Symphony Center Presents Orchestra Series for this special appearance by the Orchestre Métropolitain de Montréal. The organization’s music director, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, hailed as “the greatest generator of energy on the international podium” (The Financial Times), and “Brucknerian to be reckoned with” (MusicWeb International), brings his Montreal ensemble to Symphony Center for a performance of Bruckner’s stirring Symphony No. 4 (Romantic). This revealing documentary illuminates everyday life at Buckingham Palace from the perspective of the royal servants, who know their employers in ways that no one else ever could. Discover why so many people are willing to dedicate their lives to this demanding and exhausting work.
This 50th anniversary celebration of the career of a comic genius is filled with pure nostalgia, great clips, and memories from iconic stars, including Carl Reiner, Tim Conway (his last interview), Vicki Lawrence, Cloris Leachman, Betty White, Tina Fey, and of course…Carol Burnett herself.

Bill McGlaughlin
Exploring Music: Dona Nobis Pacem Dona nobis pacem is Latin for “grant us peace.” It is the conclusion of the Agnus Dei portion of the traditional Latin Mass, and in a broader sense can be thought of as a heartfelt, near-universal wish, regardless of a person’s religious views. Bill McGlaughlin will make music on the theme of peace his topic for one week in November. His hope: to focus attention on the epidemic of gun violence that plagues our country, and also to provide nourishment and comfort to those affected by all the kinds of violent mayhem that scar the world. Included will be music by Bach, Byrd, Schubert, Grieg, and many more.

Celebrating Notre-Dame de Paris: Gustavo Dudamel Conducting Berlioz In 2014, to celebrate the completion of renovations to Notre Dame Cathedral, the Radio France Philharmonic, Radio France Choir, and tenor Andrew Staples gathered there under Gustavo Dudamel’s direction to present the Requiem Mass (Grande Messe des Morts) by Hector Berlioz. In the wake of the fire that damaged the great cathedral earlier this year, the European Broadcasting Union has reissued its recording of that performance. Kerry Frumkin will host WFMT’s broadcast of the mass – one of Berlioz’s most epic creations – in this historic performance.

Joshua Kohl as Hamlet
More from OperaDelaware: Amleto Franco Faccio (1840-1891) was an associate of Verdi, music director at the famed Milan opera house La Scala, and the composer of a Shakespeare-inspired opera, Amleto (Hamlet). He had another close friend and colleague among Italy’s leading musicians and writers, one Arrigo Boito, who crafted the Amleto libretto. The score was long thought to be lost, but it was re-discovered in the archives of the Ricordi publishing hour and revived just a few years ago. OperaDelaware took up the work, and WFMT shares its performance.

The CSO and Chorus in Rossini’s Stabat Mater Rossini’s Stabat Mater was first performed in the Italian city of Bologna in 1842. Carlo Maria Giulini, the Chicago Symphony’s principal guest conductor in the 1970s, first introduced the score to the orchestra’s audience in 1972, and current music director Riccardo Muti re-introduced it in 2018. The text is a Latin poem dating from the Middle Ages, a series of poignant scenes of the Virgin Mary standing at Jesus’ cross as he is dying. (The title translates to The Mother Was Standing.) It features not only the chorus but also a quartet of vocal soloists, which at this performance included tenor Dmitry Korchak and bass Eric Owens singing two of the score’s highlight solo arias. The remainder of the program reflected, as Chicago Tribune critic John Von Rhein put it, a similar aura of somber reflection. Beginning with a setting of the Kyrie mass text (Lord Have Mercy) by Mozart, it continued with Luigi Cherubini’s lament for another classical master, Chant sur la Mort de Joseph Haydn.

Black Tulip
Live from WFMT: Baroque Cantata Rarities Lutenist and theorbo artist Joel Spears, director of the Chicago early-music group Black Tulip, has discovered three solo cantatas from the Baroque era that he sees as having special resonance with 21stcentury issues and events. He and soprano Josefien Stoppelenburg, recorder artist Mirja Lorenz, and viola da gamba specialist Phillip W. Serna will perform Alessandro Scarlatti’s Lucretia Romana, about a woman raped by a king; Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre’s Semele, exemplifying the work of women composers in the late 17th century; and John Blow’s Sappho to the Goddess of Love, which Joel describes as a mad scene. There will also be instrumental music, including a virtuosic sonata by Bach predecessor and mentor Dietrich Buxtehude. Kerry Frumkin hosts.

Sonora Slocum
Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra On Stage MSO guest conductor Eun Sun Kim, principal guest conductor for the Houston Grand Opera, made her debut in 2012 at Germany’s Oper Frankfurt, and first appeared in the United States at HGO in 2017. For her appearance in Milwaukee, she’s leading not opera but a beloved choral classic, Brahms’ German Requiem, with the MSO Chorus and two vocal soloists. The concert will open with music by a slightly older Brahms contemporary, Carl Reinecke (1824-1910), who wrote his Romantic-style Flute Concerto in the early years of the 20th century. The soloist will be Milwaukee’s principal flutist, Sonora Slocum.

Julia Wolfe
The New York Philharmonic This Week: Fire! The title comes from a reminiscence by an early 20th-century labor activist, Clara Lemlich: “Ah, then I had fire in my mouth.” One cringes from imagining the blaze that destroyed the Triangle Shirtwaist Company in New York City in 1911, trapping and killing 146 people, mostly young immigrant women who, ironically, had recently been agitating for better working conditions. American composer Julia Wolfe composed Fire in My Mouth to recognize these victims; the oratorio was premiered by Jaap van Zweden and the New York Philharmonic this past January, and was recorded for later broadcast. The orchestra was joined by a Philadelphia-based chamber choir, The Crossing, and the Young People’s Chorus of New York City. There are four movements: Immigration, Factory, Protest, and finally, Fire.
