Air Check Dear Member, This year, October brings much more than fall colors – one WTTW program celebrates an impressive milestone, and another stages a welcome return, after more than a decade, to our backyard. And WFMT travels far afield to bring you an event that may come as close as classical music ever gets to a reality show. One of our most popular local series, Check, Please!, marks its 15th anniversary this month with an exciting new season and a new online series, Chat, Please! The highly rated national series Antiques Roadshow rolled into Chicago last summer to tape three episodes that attracted 6,000 hopefuls and 70 appraisers, and this month, their fascinating finds will at last be revealed. Lisa Flynn treks to Warsaw, Poland to report for WFMT on the exciting action at the drama-filled 2015 International Chopin Piano Competition, including a live broadcast of the winner’s concert. You can experience it as it happens, wherever you are, at 98.7WFMT and on wfmt.com. As the autumn leaves fall, WTTW11 offers a diverse array of riveting new content to enjoy. We commence October with a celebration of Polish Heritage Month and throughout the month, introduce three new British series to the Sunday night lineup: Home Fires, The Widower, and The Guilty. We explore Undiscovered Haiti with José Andrés (with President Bill Clinton and Chef Mario Batali in tow), and Latin artists pay tribute to Michael Jackson. We take you to Soldier Field for The Grateful Dead’s final shows ever, look back on the career trajectory of Mary Tyler Moore, delve into The Brain with David Eagleman, gain new insights about our pets on Nature, examine immigration reform and the war in Syria with Frontline, and premiere a new season of Jay’s Chicago. As mentioned above, Check, Please! creator David Manilow converses with a variety of restaurant industry influencers on the digital series Chat, Please!, and this month’s theme on The Good Stuff (wttw.com/goodstuff) is “Thrill Seeking” – for that, you need not look any further than WTTW, across all platforms. WFMT continues to bring you live Lyric Opera broadcasts: this month, hear Rossini’s fairytale comedy Cinderella as Peter van de Graaff and Roger Pines co-host the opening performance on October 4. And the New York Philharmonic starts its new radio season by broadcasting its 2015-16 opening night featuring music director Alan Gilbert and guest pianist Lang Lang. British pianist and recording artist Margaret Fingerhut brings her artistry to Live from WFMT to share a recital of songs, stories, and interludes. And to round out an exceptionally busy month, we bring you the San Francisco Opera’s critically acclaimed production of Berlioz’s Les Troyans (The Trojans), one of the highlights of the company’s 2014-15 season. WFMT.com is your source for music news around town, including timely, topical and humorous stories of interest; the complete radio schedule; and the “What’s Playing Now” roll, so you don’t miss a thing. On behalf of all of us at WTTW and WFMT, my thanks as always for your continued engagement Sincerely,

Dan Schmidt President & CEO

I started thinking about ways to construct a show that I’d like to watch, and that turned out to be: three citizen reviewers from different walks of life coming together to talk about three interesting restaurants of their choosing – anything from upscale and avant garde to a “hole in the wall.” I knew that the only station in town I wanted to partner with was WTTW. They have the same sensibility of exploration and trust, and that was very important to me. I thought that finding guests would be easy, but I needed a host… someone who was not a restaurant critic but who could talk knowledgeably about food. Enter Amanda Puck – a restaurant veteran, fun, and with a little on-camera experience. We shot the pilot, and I can still remember sitting in the control room at WTTW, laughing at the banter and realizing that this might actually work. How many guest reviewers have applied to be on the show? Manilow: More than 37,000 people have applied online over the years, and of that number, more than 540 have appeared on the show. What goes into choosing the perfect guest/ group of guests? Manilow: A great trio of guests includes three people you’d never see around a dinner table other than on Check, Please! A diverse group of folks with equally diverse backgrounds, ages, ethnicity, occupations, and opinions. A belly dancer seated next to a used-car salesman and an investment banker, for instance.

Is real wine served during the show? Manilow: Yes. How did Barack Obama come to be one of the first guest-reviewers? Manilow: Barack Obama, then an Illinois state senator, came on the show because I asked him to – we used to dine out occasionally. His epi-

And starting this fall, I’m hosting a new web interview series, Chat, Please!, in which I talk with a variety of notables connected with Chicago’s culinary scene – chefs, restaurant designers, restaurateurs, food photographers, distillery owners, and more. Anything else new coming up for season 15? Manilow: We’re excited about an upcoming “Chef’s Choice” compilation episode, in which nine prominent Chicago chefs choose a favorite local restaurant and explain why they selected it. Why do you think Check, Please! has so strongly influenced the local restaurant scene? Manilow: Audiences understand that we’ll show them the hip places, but also the ethnic hidden gems. As a native Chicagoan, I was raised that way, and I enjoy both ends of the scale, so the show mirrors that. I’m proud that so many viewers go to the featured restaurants. I’ve gotten calls from restaurateurs living the American Dream who tell me that they can “send their kids to college now” because of the amount of new customers they have, and the huge impact that Check, Please! has had on their restaurants and their lives.

sode was never aired as part of a regular season because at that point, we were still working out the kinks. We premiered it seven years after we taped it, right before his first inauguration. Most memorable guest-reviewer (besides Barack Obama)? Manilow: There was a guy who, unknown to us, took a sleeping pill prior to the taping which did not mix well with the wine being served. Midway through, he suddenly yelled at the camera, “Stop looking at me!” We never aired that episode. How has Check, Please! evolved and innovated over the course of the series?

San Francisco Opera

“Zarzuela,” says Fiesta host Elbio Barilari, “constitutes a delicate balance among Spanish folk music, costume drama, and operatic style.” This particular Spanish stage genre was especially popular in the first half of the 20th century.

British pianist Margaret Fingerhut returns with her latest recording, Endless Song, which has received outstanding reviews. She will play a recital of Songs, Stories, and Interludes that features Schubert, Chopin, Fauré, and Gershwin.

As Steven Winn points out in The Classical Review, staging Berlioz’s opera The Trojans is a monumental undertaking logistically and artistically. Tune in to scale the heights of Les Troyens with the San Francisco Opera.

Isabel Leonard

An Opening Afternoon from Rossini and Lyric Opera Peter Van De Graaff and Roger Pines co-host the Sunday-matinee opening performance of Lyric Opera’s second production of the new season, Rossini’s Cinderella (La Cenerentola). It’s an opera that puts comic twists on the familiar fairy tale of Cinderella and Prince Charming. A prominent role is that of Don Magnifico, Cinderella’s stepfather, father of the less-thancharming stepsisters, one of whom he hopes to marry off to Prince Ramiro. Ramiro’s valet, Dandini, also gets some comic turns, and instead of a fairy godmother, there’s a sort of godfather figure, the prince’s friend, the mock-philosophical Alidoro. The role of Angelina – Cinderella – will be taken by Isabel Leonard, whom the Chicago Tribune has praised for “coloratura agility, striking beauty, and charm.” Tenor Lawrence Brownlee, a specialist in the bel-canto singing style, takes the role of Ramiro in his company debut. Lyric music director Sir Andrew Davis conducts.

Martha Argerich, 1962

Highlighting the 2015 Chopin Competition One of the world’s most prestigious contests for rising pianists is the International Chopin Competition in Warsaw, Poland. First held in 1927, it was interrupted by World War II, resuming thereafter and, since 1955, takes place every five years. Winners have included some of the most prominent keyboard artists of the 20th century: Maurizio Pollini, Martha Argerich, Garrick Ohlsson, and Yundi Li are just a few names. Artists who have taken second and third places in the Chopin Competition: these include Vladimir Ashkenazy and Mitsuko Uchida. The juries that judge the contestants’ performances have included such legendary names in music as Artur Rubinstein, Maurice Ravel, and Nadia Boulanger. David Polk, WFMT’s program director, will be joined by program host-producer Lisa Flynn on an extended visit to the 2015 competition, due to get underway October 3. From Warsaw, starting on October 10, David and Lisa will share commentary and performances from the competition’s four rounds. We’ll be airing these highlights on Carl Grapentine’s morning program (after 9:00 am) and on the weekend morning programs too. We’ll then present a live broadcast of the first prizewinners’ concert. To lead up to the presentations from the 2015 festival, Carl will play recordings by past prizewinners: those who took first place, and also some of the “also-rans.”

Exploring Music via New Releases Exploring Music host Bill McGlaughlin tells us he has “boxes of wonderful new recordings by artists ranging from rising starts to established masters and all manner of delightful esoterics in between.” In fact, he has so many boxes that he’s going to feature new classical releases over a period of two weeks. He notes that “these beautiful new albums prove beyond a doubt that classical music is alive and kicking: a vast abundance of new releases from orchestras, chamber groups, and opera companies around the world.” Being featured during week one are a number of pianists: Leif Ove Andsnes, Yundi Li, PierreLaurent Aimard, and Daniil Trifonov.

Song: Mirror of the World Thomas Hampson explores a number of intriguing topics on the October editions of Song: Mirror of the World, sharing a number of outstanding art-song recordings along with his commentary. About Vienna: Crossroads of Change, he says: “At the turn of the 18th century, Imperial Vienna was the setting for political as well as artistic upheaval. A new yearning for individual expression gave Schubert the impetus to forge poetry and music into a fresh, powerful metaphor for human experience.” It was part of the dawn of the Romantic movement in music, theater, and literature, and Singing the Romantic Self is Hampson’s next theme: “a new era of individuality…the Romantics were also fascinated by the natural and supernatural worlds.” In Fascination with the Foreign, he looks at the music of Hector Berlioz: “France and Germany between the revolutionary years of 1830 and 1848, when a fascination with the outside world created passionate interest in Shakespeare, Scotland, and Swedish soprano Jenny Lind.”

Tuesday Night Opera: Boris Godunov Modest Mussorgsky’s powerful historical music-drama has been presented in a variety of versions since its first performance at the Maryinsky Theater of St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1874. His friend and colleague Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov undertook a number of revisions, and for a long time, Mussorgsky’s original score was little known. The recording issued in the early 1980s on Philips Records, by the radio-television chorus and orchestra of what was still at that time the USSR, returned to the original version that Mussorgsky completed in 1872. He based his opera on a play by Alexander Pushkin, itself based on historical and quasi-historical events in the Russian history of the late 16th and early 17th centuries. The recording features bass Alexander Vedernikov as Boris, a czar who may or may not have murdered the true heir to the Russian throne. In the 1872 version, the opera begins with a prologue that contains the famous Coronation Scene. Act One is devoted to the recollections of the aged monk Pimen and to the adventures of two younger clerics. Act Two contains Boris’ monologue. Act Three takes place in Poland, where Grigory, posing as the long-lost heir Dimitri, solicits help to reclaim his throne. Act Four contains the dramatic Death of Boris and the equally dramatic Revolution Scene, when the Russian people fearfully contemplate an uncertain future.

Anna Caterina Antonacci

The San Francisco Opera and the Mighty Trojans Like Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov – see elsewhere in this section – and the components of Wagner’s Ring cycle, Berlioz’s Les Troyens (The Trojans) is an opera with problems. It requires a first-rate cast and elaborate staging, and its sheer length makes it a kind of musical endurance test. (Berlioz did not live to see a complete production of his most ambitious work.) The San Francisco Opera took on Les Troyens during its 2014-15 season, and according to Steven Winn, writing for The Classical Review, the company succeeded brilliantly. The production will close out the San Francisco Opera’s radio season for this year. It stars Anna Caterina Antonacci as Cassandra, the Trojan princess whose warnings against the Greeks are ignored, according to Virgil’s Aeneid, on which the composer based his libretto. Cassandra is prominent in the opera’s first portion, The Capture of Troy; in The Trojans at Carthage, interest is centered on Aeneas, who has escaped from Troy with a small band of followers, and on Dido, the queen of Carthage. The roles of the lovers are sung by tenor Bryan Hymel and mezzo-soprano Susan Graham. Donald Runnicles, former music director of the San Francisco Opera, is the conductor.
