Air Check Dear Member, October brings back new seasons of audience favorites and some exciting debut programming. And we’re excited to premiere two all-new specials: an electrifying Soundstage concert to broadcast on PBS stations across the country featuring chart-topping singer/songwriter Regina Spektor, whom you may know as the singer/songwriter of the theme for the popular Netflix series Orange is the New Black; and a new cross-platform special, Navy Pier: A Century of Reinvention with Geoffrey Baer, which will reveal the fascinating history – and future – of one of Chicago’s most popular tourist destinations. Tune in for the television documentary, and visit wttw.com/navypier for a mobile video tour of the Pier with Geoffrey as guide, an historical timeline, an analysis of the sustainability aspect of the development project, a library of webexclusive videos, and a place where you can share photos and memories of your family’s time on Navy Pier. PBS NewsHour serves up live coverage and analysis of the Presidential and Vice Presidential debates, and several specials recall crucial elections of the past. Meet a girls’ soccer team from Chicago’s South Side endeavoring to stay In the Game, Nature takes us into the worlds of Super Hummingbirds and Africa’s Gentle Giants, NOVA traces human evolution, and Frontline presents more incisive reporting on ISIS. For something completely different, Evanston native Bill Murray receives the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, American Masters focuses on television trailblazer Norman Lear, and we get a backstage pass to the making of Broadway’s hottest show, Hamilton. On 98.7WFMT and wfmt.com, our long-standing partnership with Lyric Opera of Chicago continues as Lisa Flynn and Roger Pines co-host live presentations of Wagner’s Das Rheingold – opening night of the new Lyric season – and Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor. We’ll welcome back the star of Das Rheingold, bass-baritone Eric Owens, for new editions of Eric on Opera on Saturday afternoons, and singers from Lyric’s Ryan Opera Center for a new season of studio recitals. Conductor Michael Tilson Thomas and his San Francisco Symphony are back with a new season on Thursday nights. And Kerry Frumkin welcomes two extraordinary quartets for live Impromptus during October: the award-winning young players of the Calidore String Quartet, and the internationally-renowned Danish String Quartet, both visiting Chicago this fall. 2-for-1 Tickets to “Oliver!” The Saint Sebastian Players (SSP) open their 36th season with the Tony Award-winning musical Oliver! with music and lyrics by Lionel Bart. Bringing the beloved Charles Dickens novel to life, this wild adventure through Victorian England spotlights the young orphaned Oliver Twist navigating London’s underworld of theft and violence, searching for a home, a family, and, most important, love. When a boy named the Artful Dodger picks up Oliver on the street, he brings him to join a gang of child pickpockets, led by the conniving but charismatic Fagin. When Oliver is falsely accused of a theft he didn’t commit, a kind and wealthy gentleman rescues him, to the dismay of Fagin’s violent sidekick, Bill Sykes. Caught in the middle is the warmhearted Nancy, who is trapped under Bill’s thumb, but desperate to help Oliver. Performances of Oliver! take place October 21-November 13, Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 pm and Sundays at 2:00 pm at St. Bonaventure, 1625 W. Feeling Good About America: The 1976 Presidential Election
The Durrells in Corfu on Masterpiece
In 1968, Gore Vidal and William F. Buckley, Jr. changed TV news forever with their explosive political debates. Live and unscripted, conservative Buckley and leftist Vidal riveted viewers as a new era in contentious public discourse was born.
This film chronicles the close 1976 race between incumbent Republican President Gerald Ford and Democratic candidate and Georgia Governor Jimmy Carter. It was the last time the country wasn’t polarized in the manner it is today.
Louisa Durrell and her four headstrong children, ages 11 to 21, arrive penniless on the bucolic Greek island of Corfu in 1935. They soon fall in with the locals and a menagerie of animals.

In an epic road trip, political comedian John Fugelsang retraces the journey of Alexis de Tocqueville, whose study of the United States in 1831 came to define the country as a place where anyone, of any background, could climb the ladder of economic opportunity. Fugelsang explores whether Tocqueville’s vision is alive and well today, or whether George Carlin was right when he famously quipped, “It’s the American Dream because you have to be asleep to believe it.”

Feeling Good About America: 1976 Election In 1976, the year of the Bicentennial, Americans pulled together to select a new president who could help close the book on the Watergate scandal. This film chronicles the race between incumbent Republican President Gerald Ford and Democratic candidate and Georgia Governor Jimmy Carter, exploring Ford’s pardon of Richard Nixon and Carter’s primary strategy in a crowded field, and discusses how the 1976 Presidential election was the last time in which the country wasn’t polarized in the manner it is today.

Lyric Opera of Chicago: Das Rheingold on Opening Night Lyric Opera’s all-new production of Wagner’s Ring cycle – a monumental creation that the company calls one of the greatest musical achievements in Western culture – will begin with Das Rheingold, The Rhine-Gold, the prelude opera of the cycle. Here we meet Wotan, king of the gods, and his adversary Alberich, ruler of the kingdom of the dwarves, who steals the sacred Rhine River gold and forges from it an all-powerful ring. When Wotan steals the ring, Alberich curses it, and the stage is set for struggle and tragedy that will eventually engulf all the protagonists. Das Rheingold opens with beautiful singing from the three Rhinemaidens; it ends with the majestic Entry of the Gods into Valhalla, their new home in the clouds, not knowing that it and they are doomed to destruction. David Pountney is the stage director for Lyric’s new Ring. Music director Sir Andrew Davis is the conductor, and the cast is headed by bass-baritone Eric Owens as Wotan. WFMT’s Lisa Flynn and Lyric’s Roger Pines will cohost the live opening-night broadcast.

From the San Francisco Opera The WFMT Radio Network’s offerings from the San Francisco Opera conclude this month with three stellar presentations. From the company’s archives comes a 1982 performance of Poulenc’s tragedy Dialogues of the Carmelites with Leontyne Price, Régine Crespin, Carol Vaness, and Eric Halfvarson. A production from the just-concluded 2015-16 season of Verdi’s Don Carlo stars Ana Maria Martinez, a favorite of Chicago opera audiences, in the role of Elizabeth; other cast members are Michael Fabiano, Mariusz Kwiecien, and René Pape. Based on a play by Schiller, Don Carlo is set at the colorful 16th-century court of Spain’s King Philip II. Finally there’s Janacek’s powerful drama Jenufa, with Malin Byström in the title role and Karita Mattila in the role of Kostelnicka; Czech conductor Jiri Belohlavek is on the podium, and the production is sung in its original Czech.

On the program is Beethoven’s songcycle An die ferne Geliebte, some rarely-heard songs by Sibelius, and music by Leonard Bernstein.

Leif Ove Andsnes
More from the San Francisco Symphony In 1995, conductor-composereducator Michael Tilson Thomas was appointed music director of the San Francisco Symphony, and he is now the longest-tenured MD of any major American orchestra. During his years in San Francisco, he and the orchestra have been especially singled out for innovative concert planning that features a great deal of American music, and for bringing new audiences to both traditional and non-traditional symphony concerts. Their recordings on the SFS Media label, including a complete Mahler cycle, have also won acclaim. The WFMT Radio Network is presenting a new 13-week series of broadcast concerts, most of which will be led by MTT. The leadoff concert spotlights a Beethoven interpretation from guest pianist Leif Ove Andsnes, plus music by former Chicago Symphony composer-in-residence Mason Bates.

Friday 28 Joseph Colaneri
Two from Glimmerglass New York State’s Glimmerglass Festival has been called a one-ofa-kind event: It combines opera, musical theater, concerts, master classes, and more in a scenic venue between the Adirondack and Catskill mountains. Join us for two highly contrasted recent performances from Glimmerglass, beginning with Stephen Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd. Greer Grimsley will be featured as the notorious Demon Barber of Fleet Street, with Luretta Bybee as Mrs. Lovett and John DeMain conducting. Then there’s a seldom-heard Rossini work, La Gazza Ladra or The Thieving Magpie, remembered for its overture but little else. Recognizing the brilliant score and sensational plot of this dark comedy, Glimmerglass and its music director, Joseph Colaneri, performed it with a cast headed by Rachele Gilmore and Dale Travis.

Under the guest conductorship of Carlos Miguel Prieto, Yeh performed a percussion concerto by the Scottish composer James MacMillan entitled Veni, Veni, Emmanuel. MacMillan based this work on a plainsong chant with that same Latin title, translated as O Come, O Come, Emmanuel and associated with the season of Advent.
