Air Check Dear Member, Each year as summer draws to a close, I look forward with great anticipation to the fall season on WTTW and WFMT, and all of the new and exciting content that we will be able to bring to you in more ways than ever before. Whether you watch live on your television or radio, online on our websites, on your mobile device, via a podcast or app, WTTW and WFMT are everywhere you are, anytime you want. To cite just a few examples: for those who were fans of the popular 1984 drama series The Jewel in the Crown, WTTW presents the new series Indian Summers on Masterpiece, set in 1932 in the shadow of the Himalayas as British rule falters and modern India is born. We expect this new series to be a hit! On WFMT, September brings a new season from Lyric Opera of Chicago and several broadcasts of the BBC Proms concerts (more below). The new original web series Chat, Please! featuring casual conversations with notables from around the local restaurant industry, across a variety of disciplines, will also premiere in September. This month on WTTW11, a new two-part American Experience paints a revealing portrait of Walt Disney, the complex man who gave the world Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, and the Magic Kingdom, inspiring theme parks all over the world. We revisit Ken Burns’s iconic series The Civil War for an entire week, to mark its 25th anniversary. Everybody Loves Raymond producer Phil Rosenthal circles the globe on a delicious culinary journey that will make you want to say: I’ll Have What Phil’s Having. And if that doesn’t make you hungry, we bring you another season of The Great British Baking Show, WTTW’s mouth-watering digital series FOODPHILES comes to television, and the digital series The Good Stuff (wttw.com/goodstuff) samples “The Future of Food.” We meet Nature’s Miracle Orphans, and experience the rebirth of Africa’s legendary Gorongosa Park. Actor Martin Clunes (Doc Martin) portrays Sherlock Holmes creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in Arthur & George on Masterpiece. And as always, WTTW brings you an impressive slate of programming in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. WFMT partners with the European Broadcasting Union, the BBC, and Jon Tolansky to present six full-length concerts and a number of individual highlights from the 2015 Promenade Concerts taking place in London’s Royal Albert Hall. Carl Grapentine will play Proms performances during his September morning programs; included among the complete concerts is the traditional Last Night of the Proms, with enthusiastic audience participation. Closer to home, we resume broadcasts from the Lyric Opera of Chicago: the annual Stars of Lyric Opera concert live from Millennium Park and the gala opening night of the 2015-2016 season at the Civic Opera House: Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro. Peter Van De Graaff and Roger Pines are the co-hosts. Also in the operatic realm we have more Saturday afternoon broadcasts from the San Francisco Opera, including soprano Patricia Racette in the titles roles of Puccini’s Madama Butterfly and Carlisle Floyd’s Susannah. In digital news on WFMT, check out our brand new Apple and Android apps, and visit wfmt.com every day for stories covering the classical music and arts scene in Chicago and beyond. As always, on behalf of WTTW and WFMT, I offer our heartfelt thanks for your continuing support as we head into fall. Sincerely,
Inside the Guide

Conversation: Attracting and Keeping Great Teachers As part of the American Graduate: Let’s Make It Happen! Initiative to raise awareness of the obstacles some students may face in achieving a high school diploma, WTTW is joining the conversation led by Catalyst Chicago in partnership with the Chicago Public Library to discuss how to attract and keep good teachers. Keynote speaker Susan Moore Johnson, a professor at the Harvard Graduate Susan Johnson School of Education, will discuss how strong teachers are the most important in-school factor in student success. A former high school teacher and administrator, Johnson directs the Project on the Next Generation of Teachers, which examines how best to recruit, develop, and retain a strong teaching force. Her studies have included the effects of collective bargaining on schools, the priorities of local teacher union leaders, teacher evaluation, and the use of incentive pay plans for teachers. This is a free event. To learn more and to RSVP, visit wttw.com/events. WTTW’s American Graduate: Let’s Make It Happen! initiative is made possible through a grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

This month he ranges farther afield to explore the musical traditions of Portugal. “Once one of the mightiest nations in the world,” Elbio notes, “little Portugal can boast of an amazing musical heritage. From the medieval period to the present, Portuguese composers have been in the forefront of Western art. Fiesta! attempts a first overview of Portugal’s fabulous music history.”

Marin Alsop
BBC Promenade Concerts “It’s 120 years,” writes Edward Blakeman, director of the BBC Proms concerts at London’s Royal Albert Hall, “since Henry Wood raised his baton to conduct the very first Prom on 10 August 1895 at the Queen’s Hall in London. ‘I can see the packed house now,’ he wrote in his autobiography, ‘and hear the welcome I received.’ Packed houses and welcoming audiences are happily still very much part of every Proms season…[a] joyous celebration of great music that was Sir Henry’s original ambition. He cared passionately that the Proms should be accessible and affordable, and thanks to the BBC, which took over the running of the Proms in 1927, those ideals continue to be at the forefront of every season.” WFMT presents six Proms concerts this month, including a performance by the Boston Symphony under Andris Nelsons, an all-Sibelius concert led by Osmo Vänskä, a performance led by Sir Andrew Davis, and the raucously enthusiastic Last Night of the Proms (September 27) led by Marin Alsop.

Esa-Pekka Salonen
The Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Tristan In 2013, music-lovers honored the 200th birthday of Richard Wagner with performances of his musicdramas, staged in opera houses or presented in concert form at symphony concerts. The Chicago Symphony performed Act 2 of Tristan and Isolde, which is highlighted by the extensive duet known as Liebesnacht (Love Night). In the cast were Stefan Vinke as Tristan, Linda Watson as Isolde, Michelle DeYoung as Brangäne, and John Relyea as King Marke. Noting the orchestra’s “resplendent playing and rich, glowing textures” on Chicago Classical Review, Lawrence A. Johnson commented that guest conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen “consistently [drew] out the impassioned score with apt fervor and transparency.”

Hosted by violist and new-music enthusiast Nadia Sirota, this series aims “to crack open composers’ brains and see what’s happening inside,” according to the series’ website. The idea is to explore and understand, both through direct conversation with the subjects and extensive sampling of their works. “What did the composer listen to as a kid?,” Nadia asks. “Whose music did they despise in college? What did their middle-school band sound like? What piece of music did they hear that completely changed everything?” The September broadcasts will feature John Luther Adams and Andrew Norman. Each broadcast is preceded by a sampling of the composer’s music.

Thomas Hampson
Song: Mirror of the World Thomas Hampson – international opera star, renowned recitalist, and a noted advocate for the arts and humanities – hosts a series from the Hampsong Foundation and the WFMT Radio Network that explores the world of classical art song as a prism for understanding culture and history. The series takes a humanities-based approach to the role of song in society: its relationship to cultural movements, historical events, and intellectual thought. The commentary on these topics surrounds art-song recordings drawn from both the past and the present.

Alexander Zemlinsky
Zemlinsky Rarity on Tuesday Night Opera Peter Van De Graaff presents Alexander Zemlinsky’s rarely-heard fantasy opera Der Traumgörge (Görge the Dreamer) as one of this month’s Tuesday Night Operas. Completed in 1906, the work was slated for performance at the Vienna Court Opera (now Vienna State Opera) but withdrawn after Gustav Mahler’s resignation as director of the company. Mahler was a friend and mentor to Zemlinsky, in whose opera can be heard stylistic influences from him and also from Richard Strauss. The work was lost, rediscovered in the 1970s, and premiered in the German city of Nuremberg in 1980. Its hero lives a fantasy life in which he seeks a Dream Princess who eventually emerges into reality.
