Exit Zero Southeast Chicago was formerly one of the largest steel-producing regions in the world. But that all began to change in the 1980s as one by one, the mills closed, leaving a region devastated by a crumbling economy and a toxic environment left behind by heavy industry. A forgotten region, even the exit ramp here is numbered Zero. This film captures the stories of a region traumatized by de-industrialization, and looks toward a future of economic opportunity and environmental justice for Southeast Chicago residents.

Urban Nature WTTW’s award-winning digital series comes to television! University of Chicago evolutionary biologist Marcus Kronforst hops on a bike, grabs a kayak, or even takes the subway to explore overlooked ecosystems in Chicago, New York, and San Francisco – seeking out the unlikely habitats that are hidden among the skyscrapers. He talks with the passionate conservationists who are ensuring that these urban oases survive despite the constant dangers posed by the surrounding city. And he discovers how these havens are essential to the health of our cities – and the future of our planet.

These are some of their stories, told by those who live, breathe, and work to find solutions for critical local and national issues: Pilsen’s own Mexican-American residents.

Spying on the Royals This riveting two-part documentary tells the secret story behind events that stunned the world, 80 years ago. On December 5, 1936, King Edward VIII secretly phoned his brother, the future monarch George VI, to tell him he could no longer be King if it meant abandoning the woman he loved, Wallis Simpson. Little did they know that others were secretly listening to their calls. The greatest royal romance of the 20th century can now be seen through the secret files of those who spied on Edward VIII, Wallis Simpson, and a king-to-be in their own words from the time and eyewitnesses still living today.

Music of the Baroque: Ranging Wide During its 2017-18 concert season, Chicago’s Music of the Baroque performed Handel’s Biblical oratorio Esther and Mendelssohn’s Handelinspired oratorio Elijah, also based on portions of the Hebrew Bible. These two Saturday-afternoon broadcasts will herald MOB’s Baroque in the Park performance at Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park, a gala kickoff for the ensemble’s new season, also featuring Glover as the conductor, plus onstage host Carl Grapentine. Baroque in the Park includes several Handel favorites like Music for the Royal Fireworks and a suite from The Water Music, plus choruses by Bach and Mozart and Vivaldi’s Autumn violin concerto with soloist Gina DiBello. Esther uses a chorus, an orchestra, and several vocal soloists to tell an ancient love story that’s both charming and dramatic. The heroine, one of the Israelites captured by the Persian Empire, marries the empire’s ruler and, through his love for her, succeeds in saving her people from the schemes of the murderous Haman. Elijah, by contrast, focuses on a great prophet of ancient Israel and his steadfast faith in God, even though challenged by the pagan beliefs of surrounding nations. Perhaps the best-known extract from the oratorio, in which the chorus plays a major role representing the people of Israel, is “He Watching Over Israel/ Slumbers Not, Nor Sleeps.” But there are quite a few other highlights in this powerful Mendelssohn score.

For the High Holidays: Music for the Shofar All art builds on the past to create something new. Miguel Kertsman’s new composition, recently recorded by the London Philharmonic, is a concerto for the shofar, the ram’shorn instrument traditionally used to announce Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year and the start of the High Holidays, culminating in Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. Sound the Shofar: An Ancient Instrument in Modern Times will feature the world-premiere broadcast of the concerto, with soloist Gergely Sugar. Co-producers Louise Frank and Kerry Frumkin remind us that in addition to its ceremonial role, the shofar was used in ancient times as a call to arms, and to allow shepherds to communicate across far-flung fields. “From the synagogue to the secular,” comments Louise, “the shofar’s unique resonance will endure for many years to come.” In addition to playing the concerto itself, Kerry and Louise will include in their documentary interviews with the composer, the soloist, conductor Dennis Russell Davies, and several of the other featured artists on the new Naxos CD, being released this month.

Young musicians perform

Live from Millennium Park: Introductions at the YAS! Fest Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events have designated 2018 as the Year of Creative Youth. This is a citywide celebration of Chicago’s young artists and their mentors, and it happens to coincide with the 10th anniversary of WFMT’s show called Introductions, which spotlights the Chicago area’s precollege-age classical musicians. As a highlight of the Year of Creative Youth, Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park is hosting the first YAS! Fest, YAS standing for Youth Arts Showcase, featuring Chicago Children’s Choir and the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestras. This event will run the entire afternoon of Saturday, September 22; WFMT’s Michael San Gabino will be on hand for hour one, from 11:00 am to noon, to host a live broadcast direct from the Pritzker stage as a special edition of Introductions. (If you’d like to attend the rest of the fest, it continues on the 22nd until 7:00 pm on the Millennium Park campus; admission is free.) The Year of Creative Youth is presented by Allstate Insurance Company with grant support provided by The Chicago Community Trust and support from the Chicago Transit Authority.

Roxanna Panufnik

A British Tradition: The Last Night of the Proms Sir Andrew Davis, music director for Lyric Opera of Chicago, is also chief conductor-laureate of the BBC Symphony, and in that capacity, he’ll lead that orchestra, plus two choruses and two vocal soloists, for the conclusion of this year’s BBC Promenade Concerts, billed as the world’s largest classicalmusic festival. Part of the Last Night will be a new commission, Songs of Darkness, Dreams of Light by British composer Roxanna Panufnik (daughter of the PolishBritish composer Andrzej Panufnik). There’ll be the traditional favorites too, like Fantasia on British Sea Songs by Proms founder Sir Henry Wood, Sir Hubert Parry’s Jerusalem, and music by Elgar, Stanford, and other British composers – plus an American, Richard Rodgers.
