The Guide
Dear Member,
The Member Magazine for WTTW and WFMT Renée Crown Public Media Center 5400 North Saint Louis Avenue Chicago, Illinois 60625
This month, I am excited to announce the premiere of MUHAMMAD ALI, a new film by Ken Burns that follows the life of one of the most consequential men of the 20th century, a three-time heavyweight boxing champion who captivated billions of fans with his combination of speed, agility, and power in the ring. At the height of his fame, Ali challenged Americans’ racial prejudices, religious biases, and notions about what roles celebrities and athletes play in our society. You may know that Ali was a Chicago South Side resident from roughly the mid-1960s through the late 1970s, a defining period in his life. WTTW will explore the watershed moments with a companion website (wttw.com/ali) featuring an image gallery in partnership with the Chicago History Museum; a Q&A with the filmmakers; a photo essay by Chicago architecture expert Lee Bey tracing Ali’s footsteps in Chicago; an interview with Ali’s biographer Jonathan Eig, a native Chicagoan who outlines ways that the city shaped Ali before and during his time here; and the storied history of boxing in Chicago. Also, join us for two related virtual events: in partnership with the Chicago History Museum, we’ll host a preview and discussion focusing on Ali’s time in Chicago, his life and legacy, and the intersection of sports, race, and politics; and an event and performance in partnership with PBS Books featuring New York Times bestselling author Kwame Alexander, co-writer of the biographical novel Becoming Muhammad Ali. Visit wttw.com/events for more information and to register. In tribute to Muhammad Ali, WFMT will air a November 1975 Studs Terkel interview with Ali from the Studs Terkel Radio Archive and publish an interview on September 21 with Jahlil Beats, composer of the score for MUHAMMAD ALI, on wfmt.com. And join us for a virtual Classical Conversation on September 9 featuring composer D.J. Sparr and librettist/ lead Solomon Howard for the opera Approaching Ali, a one-act chamber opera with music by Sparr and libretto by Mark Campbell and Davis Miller. The discussion will focus on the creation of the work and the challenges in portraying one of the most popular people in the world. Register at wfmt.com/events. I hope you will explore Muhammad Ali’s life and legacy with us this month, and don’t forget to tune in to watch the miniseries beginning on Sunday, September 19 at 7:00 pm. As always, thank you for your support. Sincerely,
Sandra Cordova Micek President & CEO

Q&A with Jonathan Eig
Muhammad Ali biographer and consulting producer By DANIEL HAUTZINGER From September 19-22 (7:00 pm on September 19 and 8:00 pm on September 20-22), Ken Burns tells the story of “the greatest of all time” with a four-part documentary, MUHAMMAD ALI. Written and co-directed by Sarah Burns and David McMahon, the film takes on the life of a man both lauded and vilified in and out of the ring – for his boxing championships, opposition to the Vietnam War, and involvement with the Nation of Islam.
Ali’s most recent biographer, Chicagoan Jonathan Eig, served as a consulting producer on the documentary. 4
SEPTEMBER
2021
We spoke to him about Ali, the boxer’s time in Chicago, and his significance today. The Guide: Why did you want to write a biography of Muhammad Ali? Jonathan Eig: I think he’s one of the most important and fascinating figures of the twentieth century, certainly the second half of it. He captured so much of what made America fascinating in his lifetime. His story is about race, it’s about religion, it’s about protest, it’s about rebellion – all of it in one guy.
The Guide: What is the significance of Chicago in Ali’s story? Eig: Ali lived here for some of the most important years of his career. You could say that he had his racial awakening here, because it’s when he began to box as an amateur and in traveling to Chicago for the first time, he saw that the rest of America was different [than Louisville]. There was more mixing of the races in the North than there was in the South. He heard the preaching of Elijah Muhammad and read [the Nation of Islam newspaper] Muhammad Speaks, and his eyes began to open.
Eig: After he refused to fight in Vietnam, every town and city in the country was putting out a statement saying, “We don’t want Ali to fight here.” He was planning to fight Ernie Terrell in Chicago, and that got canceled because Illinois didn’t want to offer even a tacit acknowledgment that he was a legitimate heavyweight champion.
The Guide: You also point to Chicago as the place where Ali reached adulthood as well as national stardom. How did that happen? Eig: He says he lost his virginity in Chicago, so that’s a big deal. But it’s also a place where he started to get national attention. He loved those two things a lot: sex and media attention. But to be serious about it, Chicago was really where he began to find a national stage and to realize that he could be special. He was still in high school [when he first came to Chicago for the Golden Gloves tournament], and he was cocky, but he didn’t know yet whether he was special as a boxer. And there’s reason to believe that he was not. A lot of people were skeptical: he was too small to be a heavyweight; he didn’t really have great technique. He was determining whether he could compete on that national level. When you combine that awakening with the discovery of the Nation of Islam and a record that he brought home called “A White Man’s Heaven Is a Black Man’s Hell,” it’s clear that he began to think differently about what it means to be a Black man in America, and he became a little bit more cynical about that. Those are two of the most important moments in his life. The Guide: Ali’s career not only took off in Chicago; it also ran into a roadblock here.
Jonathan Eig He still stayed in Chicago. He bought a house across the street from Elijah Muhammad. He bought an apartment building on the South Side. He tried to open up a small restaurant. He could have owned the town. He could have opened a chain of boxing gyms. He could have opened a nice steakhouse downtown. He never did any of those things. The Guide: Why is it a good time to revisit the story of Ali with this documentary? Eig: First of all: he was probably the greatest athlete of the twentieth century. And enough time has gone by that we can evaluate not only his career as a boxer, but to look at what he meant to the country. We’re still fighting so many of the battles that Ali fought over our prejudices when it comes to race and religion. Ali took a stand against those things when it was really unpopular; he risked his entire career to do so. The fact that those issues are still so vital today and that he was fighting way out in front of the curve on those things makes his story really
relevant and even stronger today. The Guide: You ended your biography with a story about Ali quietly helping someone during Martin Luther King, Jr.’s campaign for fair housing in Chicago. Why did you choose that as a postscript? Eig: Stories like that are everywhere. I can’t go to a party or sit on a plane next to somebody without hearing stories about their encounters with Ali. It seems like everybody has a story of meeting Ali somewhere and him doing these magical things. When he saw somebody with a flat tire on the side of the road, he would stop and suddenly there’d be two hundred people helping to change the tire because Ali was there. I talked to somebody not long ago who told a story of being in a restaurant with a sister had just had a massive operation and was wrapped in bandages. Ali spotted this little girl and came over and sat at the table with her and paid all of this attention to her because she was obviously having a rough time. Ali was unbelievably gracious and eager to give of himself. He was so generous with his time and money. He just genuinely loved people and needed to feel their energy. That’s a really important part of understanding Ali: that he could be incredibly selfish at times, but he always gave more than he took. The reason I wanted to end the story with that is that Ali’s life was very dark at times. He wrecked three marriages. He didn’t pay as much attention to his children as he would have liked to. He boxed too long and underwent a significant brain trauma that left him in terrible shape. I wanted to leave the reader with one last little bit of magic. This interview has been condensed and edited for clarity. Explore the MUHAMMAD ALI companion website: wttw.com/ali AUGUST 20212021 SEPTEMBER

Exploring Music with Bill McGlaughlin
In 2010, Sir Colin Davis led two programs: one of works by Beethoven and Mahler, and a second of Elgar’s Violin Concerto, with Nikolaj Znaider playing the same Guarnerius violin that Fritz Kreisler used at the concerto’s premiere.
Gustav Mahler wrote, “A symphony should be like the world: it must embrace everything.” In his symphonies, he sought to embrace love, the natural world, all life – even death. Bill devotes two weeks to Mahler’s symphonies and songs.
Born in 1939, Leo Brouwer is one of Cuba’s leading musicians, and he’s still composing. The much shorter life of Alejandro Garcia Caturla (1906-1940) was spent in the dual pursuits of music and the law. Host Elbio Barilari looks at both this month.

2021 BBC Promenade Concerts Enjoy several performances from “the Proms,” an annual tradition in London’s Royal Albert Hall featuring both new and familiar music. Featured are three works by former Chicago Symphony composers-in-residence: Elizabeth Ogonek’s Cloudline; Dance Foldings by the Chicago-based, award-winning composer Augusta Read Thomas; and Auditorium by Mason Bates. Four different UK orchestras are spotlighted: the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, the Bournemouth Symphony, the Philharmonia Orchestra, and the BBC Symphony, with conductors Elim Chan, Ryan Bancroft, Kirill Karabits, Santtu-Matias Rouvali, and Sakari Oramo. Don’t miss the popular Last Night of the Proms, which will include audience participation toward the end of the concert with its traditional patriotic favorites.

Jean-Philippe Rameau
From the Paris Opera-Comique: Hippolyte et Aricie Jean-Philippe Rameau was known as a music theorist and harpsichord composer when he mounted his first opera, Hippolyte et Aricie, in 1733. The libretto was based on a French stage classic of the previous century, Jean Racine’s Phedre. Long neglected over the centuries since his death and controversial when it premiered, the work has received renewed attention in recent years. Hippolyte (Hippolytus) was the son of the Greek hero Theseus. In addition to his love, Aricie, another participant in the plot is Theseus’ wife Phaedra, who is passionately in love with her stepson Hippolytus, though he rejects her. There are confrontations and misunderstandings, but the story is given a happy ending.

Music of the Baroque at 50 During last year’s days of dark concert halls, Chicago music lovers were still cheered by the thought that Chicago’s distinguished Music of the Baroque ensemble was celebrating its 50th anniversary of performances of Bach, Handel, Telemann, Monteverdi, and so many more. Hear from the group’s founder, Thomas Wikman, plus its current leader, Dame Jane Glover, and principal guest conductor Nicholas Kraemer among others.

From Opera Southwest: Rossini’s Tancredi Gioachino Rossini was already well known in 1813 when Tancredi premiered at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice, but the success of this work brought him to the forefront of Italian opera composers. Its leading role is for a mezzo-soprano, and in the second half of the 20th century, it was a specialty of opera star Marilyn Horne. The work abounds with dramatic scenes and virtuosic arias. The opera went through several revisions, originally with a happy ending, then with a tragic one; this production incorporates both.

Kevin Puts
Island of Innocence and Silent Night A native of St. Louis who grew up in Michigan, composer Kevin Puts graduated from the Eastman School and Yale. Now teaching at the Peabody Institute in Baltimore, he is composer-in-residence for the Fort Worth Symphony. His Symphony No. 2, airing at 4:00 pm on September 11, is subtitled Island of Innocence. He has said that it was not intended as a 9/11 memorial, but instead is a reflection on the world as it was before that pivotal date, and afterward. Puts’s opera Silent Night, airing on Saturday, September 25 at 12:00 pm, won the 2012 Pulitzer Prize in Music, and recounts a World War I event: the Christmas 2014 truce during which British, French, and German soldiers are said to have sung Christmas carols together. Librettist Mark Campbell created a story based on this story.

Anthony Barrese
From Opera Southwest: Ali Baba Giovanni Bottesini (1821-1889) was a virtuoso on the double-bass, but also a composer. His opera Ali Baba was based on The Arabian Nights tale of the title character and 40 thieves; it premiered in London in 1871 and has essentially been lost ever since, until Opera Southwest’s Anthony Barrese reconstructed it from the original score. Scheherazade’s story becomes the classic operatic one of a rich father and a beautiful daughter whom he tries to manipulate into a loveless marriage, then goes on to tell how she and her true love outwit him, and thwart the 40 thieves at the same time.

Muhammad Ali
Best of Studs Terkel: Muhammad Ali In November 1975, Studs Terkel used his portable tape recorder to capture an interview with one of the bestknown and most indelible figures of the 20th century: boxing great Muhammad Ali. That conversation took place shortly after the publication of Ali’s autobiography, The Greatest: My Own Story. Studs aired the discussion in the first half of the hour, and then finished out the program with music. Muhammad Ali’s story shines anew in the latest documentary by Ken Burns, premiering on WTTW on September 19.

From the Chicago Symphony: Cavalleria Rusticana Riccardo Muti and the Chicago Symphony, with its chorus and five vocal soloists, presented Pietro Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana in February 2020. The central characters here are Santuzza, sung by mezzo-soprano Anita Rachvelishvili, and her sometime lover Turiddu, portrayed by tenor Pietro Pretti who lets us know right at the beginning that his heart is really set on another woman, Lola (Sasha Cooke). Rounding out the cast are baritone Luca Salsi as Alfio, Lola’s husband; and mezzo-soprano Ronnita Miller as Lucia, Turiddu’s mother.
