1 to look for new activities in Phnom Penh: “What are you doing today?” “I’m wupping for a new gallery.” 2 to celebrate nightlife at a high level of activity: “We wuppedout last night.” As Winston Churchill said to us, while he was standing on Street 51, « There’s nothing wrong with change, if it’s in the right direction ». It’s soon after this night that WUPP’s team decided to shake things up. We often hear people say that « Phnom Penh is a small city », we certainly don’t agree! Phnom Penh overflows with new things to discover or rediscover: its art galleries, restaurants, bars, inhabitants, clubs, unusual places, stores, good deals, and its history. WUPP’s goal is to show you all of that and even more through trendy, expert journalistic articles and sponsored events. We’ll improve your evenings and weekend schedule WUPP-style. Every month, our whole team is making it their mission to help you discover the new WU Phnom Penh.

Eighty8 Guest House Party By The Pool Let’s say that you are adventurous. That you are not afraid of leaving Street 51. For one night at least. Let’s say you can think about turning your back on Riverside. For an hour or two. Good. Take a deep breath and move towards Street 88, just behind Wat Phnom. « Oh my God! Did he say Wat Phnom? Honey, put down the magazine. That stuff is evil.» Well... Ok. For others, the daring ones, you will discover Eighty8 Guest House, where the grass is green and the girls are pretty.

a Mormon Church. #Truestory. But after 6 months of renovations, the Eighty8, as you can discover it now, was born. The Mormons are gone, but there’s definitely a kind of spirituality left between the white walls. A different kind of spirituality for sure, but spirituality nevertheless. Stop judging. So let’s get tempted and come pray around cheap drinks while enjoying their swimming pool high speed WiFi and improved facilities in all the rooms.

You’d be missing out on life if you didn’t stop by the place. These guys are undeniably WUPP’s #1 partner. You can count on them to host many of the magazine’s concept events, such as the Battletracks Launch Party on September 7th. An insane battletracks event like you never seen before in Phnom Penh. #Imnotlying

Their Chef is the former Head Chef at The Intercon Hotel, but it doesn’t mean it’ll cost you an arm and a leg (you probably paid much more on your first tuktuk ride). This just means the food is delicious. The standard opening time for the pool and bar are from 7am to 12 pm. The pool is free for everyone to use as long as you buy a drink or have a meal.

The guest house opened in April 2011 after all of the backpacker hostels closed along Boeung Kak Lake due to the evictions. The current building was previously

ing in September with all the planned parties. So if you want to relax pool side or attend a lively party, Eighty8 Guest house has everything you want. You know they’re good because they now have to build 8 more private rooms to supply the growing demand (they also just like the number 8). Come check it out on the 7th of September to party with WUPP.

Gloria Jean’s Coffee Neighborhood Cafe Looking for the trendiest café in town? The Australiabased Gloria Jean’s Coffee is here to stay. The coffee shops have been a great hit among Phnom Penh inhabitants, both locals and expats. The first cafe opened its doors in April 2010 in BKK1 followed by two other locations in 2011, in the Canadia Tower and most recently on Riverside. The company plans to increase the number of locations in Cambodia to over 10 in the next several years. As the name suggests, the café franchise focuses on coffee, and they do it well. Among the classic lattes, cappuccinos, and mochas, are an array of other beverages – delicious hot chocolate, hot and iced teas, fruit drinks, and the specialty “chillers” await the visitor. Back in Australia, new recipes for drinks are created every few months to add variety to the regular selection. For those with an appetite, a large selection of pastries, cakes and sandwiches are available. Great care is taken to create a cozy yet trendy atmosphere for each coffee shop, making them an ideal spot in town to meet friends or for those looking for a spacious

and quiet place to work. With three locations and more to come, there is surely a location near you. The trained baristas consistently produce drinks according to tested recipes. The high standards in customer service ensure a pleasant experience every time. Gloria Jean’s uses only select Arabica beans coming from Africa, Asia and South America and roasted to perfection in Australia. These have a distinctly different flavor to the Robusta coffees most commonly sold in Cambodia. The coffee, carefully prepared using only fresh milk, offers a taste of home for expats and a new experience in coffee for locals. For those who can’t get enough of the special brew, freshly ground Gloria Jean’s beans are available for sale only through the store.

ur sports bar

Writer Samir Cheriaa

Score

Sports Bar and Grill The Premier Sports Bar Pascal was seated at the bar talking when I arrived to his place on a Friday afternoon. He had a huge smile probably thanks to the whole week of holidays he spent with his family in Thailand, his first holiday since 2009. Pascal Plamondon is a Canadian/French who studied marketing and arrived in Phnom Penh twelve years ago. He obtained a MBA in Asia and has worked for many years for a telecommunication company in Cambodia. Today he owns with his wife the Score Bar, a huge sports bar in BKK1. In 2005, he started opening bars and restaurants in Phnom Penh, now totaling 4 in 2012. “I had the idea of opening a Sports Bar in Phnom Penh a few years ago. I thought it would be a great opportunity since I wanted it to be able to welcome at least three hundred people in one place at the same time. With my wife, we looked for a place to build it and we found the perfect location here on Street 282.” The Score Bar took seven months to build, “the whole structure was designed by Swedish architects, while I was in charge of the interior design. I wanted it modern, dynamic and I absolutely wanted a red bricks wall in it, like the bars in Canada!”

Standing strong as a five hundred and twelve square meters building, Score Bar opened on early February 2011. Today, this bar is without a doubt the best sports bar in Cambodia. Just check out the twenty-five square meter giant screen, the sofa area and the large bar: Huge! “Fifteen people have been working here from the very beginning and some of them were already working at my previous bars.” The equipment is quite impressive. All around you, eight HD televisions are fixed on the walls, which can simultaneously broadcast five different channels among the seventeen ones available. If you go there and you don’t find the game you were looking for, let’s say you wanted to watch a men’s tennis, just ask the bartender and he will put it on for you! There is also mezzanine in the Score Bar, in which you can find another giant screen, many sofas and a bar as well. Not to mention that if you are not interested in watching a game, you can still enjoy a good time with your friends at one of the four high quality pool tables. “These are 9ft American competition size pool tables and it wasn’t easy to get them here.” _ 08

You can eat at Score Bar. The kitchen, which is managed by a new Foreign Executive Chef from Sweden, offers a full day menu. “Since the Score Bar’s opening, we’ve worked hard to quickly adapt to our clientele. We are constantly trying to improve the food, the channels available, and the events to keep our customers happy. That’s why I hired a new Chef and a new Bar Manager. Thus, most of the events in Score are Live Sports events. The Rugby World Cup 2011, the latest Super Bowl, the UEFA EURO 2012 and the Wimbledon’s final games were a huge success! But Score also provides other entertaining shows such as live performances (Kheltica, Route 66), DJ parties and themed social gatherings such as the “Nerd Night” and the very new “Quiz Night”. I asked Pascal what were Score’s plans in the future: “Well, this month we are launching a children’s menu. We are aiming to make the Score Bar a nice venue for family events in the weekends by broadcasting cartoons on the TVs and providing children with fun activities. We

are working as well on new events such as Pool competitions, Beer Pong competitions. And we would also love to regularly show more Live Music events.” Anything else? “Well other new concept events are in the pipelines! But I can’t tell you about it, it won’t be a surprise anymore.”

Tuk Tuk of the Month Man On The Go “Hi Lucky, wanna beer?” That’s how my conversation with Lucky – translated from his Khmer name Somnang – started. Having met him a few months ago, but not knowing much about him – except for his ability to always wear sun glasses – I was eager to learn more. Oh boy, I was not disappointed. After a few introduction formalities – I am 32, I have been a tuktuk driver for 9 years… that kind of bla-bla – the conversation took an unexpected turn. Lucky began to tell me about his strong passion for cycling competitions. “I used to go to my university by bicycle. I wanted to be part of a cycling competition, but I didn’t have money. That’s why I became a tuktuk driver. I bought mine in Siem Reap and drove all the way back to Phnom Penh, carrying sand in the back!” Now Lucky has taken part in many bicycle competitions around Asia - Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia. I never would have guessed this tuktuk driver was so well traveled. Made me smile when I listened to him give details about his past moments of glory: “I won the Sihanoukville competition this year, I was the number one. And the number two at Angkor Wat last year!”

He wisely told me, “People say they cannot do sports because it costs too much money to buy a bicycle. But these people that do not exercise, they are not prevented against sickness, because their body’s not strong. Then they get sick, they go to the hospital, they pay money, and it cost them much more than if they would have bought a bicycle! Everybody has free time, but people are kchiol (lazy)!” After all the talk about the importance of sports, he began to bestow upon me even more wisdom, but this time concerning development in Cambodia. “Cambodia is a very good country. Everyone is friendly is Cambodia, but there are a lot of problems: kids don’t go to school because tourists give them money, and with tourists giving money to people, it is killing Cambodia! NGOs are not strong enough, even though the government says they are. People are friendly, but poor of money… It is my country!” he concludes with a typical Cambodian smile. “Thanks Lucky, did you enjoy the beer? “Oh, not so much. It’s not good for my heart!” Streets of Phnom Penh Tel: 016 790 901

Lucky understands sports as more than just an activity. _ 10

Michael Klinkhamer WUPP: What’s Up Michael? Photographing the first cover page was great fun! Really nice models and a good atmosphere in the studio. WUPP: What do you usually photograph? Everything from people, portraits, and travel reportage to architecture, corporate photos, and advertising. I also run a daylight studio downtown on the corner of street 130 and street 5, while writing articles and doing interviews for magazines in my free time. WUPP: So where did you take this picture? I took it in Siem Reap during their Apsara Festival. Apsara is a female spirit of the clouds and waters in Hindu

and Buddhist mythology. The picture really captures the feeling of the festival and brings the viewer closer to this magical realm. She is releasing lotus petals into the wind representing fortune and purity. WUPP: So, what else can we expect from you? I will keep you updated with great photos and share what I see when I wander around town with my camera. So expect weird and amazing pictures, because that is what Phnom Penh is all about. It’s an amazing photogenic place! www.klinkphoto.com Tel: 060 873 847

RAKSMEY BURGER There you are, a block away from Pontoon, the electronica beats still throbbing in your head and the stench of tomorrow’s hangover emanating from your 75 cent market T-shirt. Tonight’s mistake awkwardly stumbles behind you complaining of hunger. In the distance a light shines on your savior, a man with a little Styrofoam package-of-goodness with your name on it. The same package you’ve woken up to so many nights before. It’s the one and only Mr. Smey, providing you and “What’s her name?” a necessary meal. Launching his business over 9 years ago, he is an inescapable ingredient to any wild night on Street 51. Raksmey Burger isn’t your average food stall; it provides the cheapest and best burgers in Phnom Penh. The two cooks can whip up a bacon and cheeseburger for only $2.5, providing you

with the necessary energy to make it through the night. Don’t worry, if you didn’t make it past the pre-partying Mr. Smey can deliver to you for free at home or at the bar if you’ve passed out early. So I if you want to have a tasty, cheap dinner post-clubbing or just need to have a snack and a nice chat with the smiling owner go straight to Reaksmey Burger! You may also meet the staff of What’s Up Phnom Penh there!

Three expats opened up this new bar and restaurant on Riverside in June. Still a little unknown, the Blitz offers a unique atmosphere with good music, friendly staff, and food and drinks at a reasonable price. You’ll enjoy the laid back atmosphere, comfy white couches, and walls covered from floor to ceiling in music memorabilia. On the walls you’ll find album covers, photos of musicians, cool antique instruments, suave guitars, and aluminium highway signs from cities around the world. The music at The Blitz reigns from all over the world, while specializing in lively Latin beats. Their stage provides a great setting for live bands and if you’re so

inspired, you can jump on stage and use their bar mic. The decor and music offer a great ambiance - charming and cozy, yet cool and hip. Need a break from singing in the spotlight? Go outside on the patio to enjoy a view of the riverside. The Blitz will stay open as long as you can drink. Eat all you want, the menu caters to everyone and at every size, from snacks to dinner until 10:30pm. Pour un Sourire d’Enfant Education Is Key It was 1995 when Pour un Sourire d’Enfant (PSE) founders Christian and Marie-France des Palli Ëres went for the first time to the largest dumpsite in Phnom Penh. There they found, crawling in dense black smoke and engulfed in the most extreme stink, thousands of children trampling next to bulldozers. Although most of them were already over school-going age, all of them were asking to go to school. There were no options for placing teenagers ages 10 to 15 into the same class as 6 year old children are just entering primary school. Consequently, PSE decided to make their dream of schooling a reality. They created a special program to support these underserved kids to catch-up with the government school system. In 1996, the Accelerated Program was born. The tears that once streamed down into the rubbish dump have now dried out. PSE has grown into a formidable machine to fight misery and continues to offer protection, health care, nutrition, scholarships and vocational trainings to 6,500 children.

seminars and a yearlong assessment for the government teachers to train them specifically for remedial instructions. Amazingly, the accelerated education system allows their students to complete the 6 grades of primary school (level 1 to 6) in only 3 years. In total 1,500 children are currently enrolled in the accelerated program allowing them to complete two primary school levels in only one year. In order to support this specific teaching program, PSE created school manuals for years 1, 2 and 3. Currently, 12 remedial books have been created covering Khmer Language, Social Science, Mathematics and applied sciences for all three grades. The pilot project is a joint venture between PSE and the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, which will be its implementing partner in the public Accelerated Education Schools. The project will last until the end of next year in over five provinces. Next month the manuals will be used at the national level and will become the standard tool for schools implementing remedial classes.

PSE supports the Cambodian Government to run remedial classes located in public schools. The organization manages the technical side and offers scholarships for the most destitute children. PSE organizes training

theWarehouse Open for almost two years now, theWarehouse is without a doubt the best wine shop in town if you are in the market for good wine. More importantly, they have the widest range of selection to choose from. Designed to look like a wine cellar, with its brick walls and a vaulted ceiling in the back, the Warehouse stocks a selection of over 600 labels from all around the globe – an impressive feat. “Our goal is to offer wine from the most important vineyards of the world,” explains Olivier Gilles, who has managed the shop since January 2011. After studying wine in France and working for hotels and restaurants in England, the sommelier was bored with the European market and was ready for a new adventure, deciding to settle in Asia. Mr. Gilles sees Asia as a place where wine is becoming increasingly important, and he hopes to develop a knowledgeable wine community. He eventually found the perfect place, Cambodia, where he feels he can create a bond with his customers. If you want to talk about wine, this welcoming host will take all the time you need to introduce the selection, and

the origins and character of each bottle. While for now the majority of his customers are expats living in Phnom Penh, Cambodian aficionados are gradually becoming a significant part of the business. Wines from Australia, France and New Zealand are the most popular, but the shop also has unique gems on offer from South Africa, Chile, Spain and Italy. And on the shelves you will find bottles ranging from good-value table wine to the most prestigious Grands Cru vintages from Bordeaux. Every weekend there is a chance to find out more: Mr. Gilles holds a wine-tasting event at theWarehouse, a great opportunity to discover new favorites and chat with other enthusiasts over a nice glass of wine.

Romeet Gallery Kate O’Hara has been the gallery manager and curator at Romeet Gallery for one year. Upon arrival, she was busy preparing for the upcoming painting exhibition for Pen Robit, a progressive Khmer artist who powerfully depicts local issues. Kate is from Australia where she worked for many years at the Australian Centre for Moving Image whilst also independently curating exhibitions. ‘When I arrived in Cambodia three years ago I started working in a dance company with their research and archiving team. Before Romeet Gallery, I worked on various art projects like the Our City Festival and Survivart. I also founded an art collaborative with Natalie Pace, artXprojects. We have produced pop-up art spaces, experimental publications and participatory art projects with local artists.’ Romeet Gallery was founded by Phare Ponleu Selpak (PPS) in 2011, as a Phnom Penh platform for emerging and established alumni of the PPS’s Visual Art School in Battambang. Romeet is a dynamic space for contemporary art exhibitions, talks, workshops, local collabora-

tions and international exchange. PPS has two objectives. The first objective is ‘Arts Education’ led by its Art School based in Battambang which delivers education in the field of visual art, music, dance and circus. The circus is well known internationally and has already toured in Europe and in the Middle East. The second objective is the promotion of Arts in Cambodia and Cambodian art internationally with partner organizations such as Romeet Gallery. Alongside the recent help of Romeet Gallery, PPS’s Visual Art School has supported many Khmer artists over the years to grow their artistic acclaim to emerge as nationally and internationally recognized artists. Both continue to grow with dedicated sponsors and reliable partners allowing them to reach out to more Khmer artists. No. 34e1 St. 178 Khan Daun Tel: 092 953 567 Open from 10am - 6pm closed Sunday

>> I Wish - Skee-lo // I can relate to the chorus. I wish I was a lil bit taller! It’s a classic track and brings back a lot of memories. >> Today Was A Good Day - Ice Cube// The music video makes me enjoy the song even more. It is purely west coast and I love my W, so throw it up if you know I-5. >> Black Like That ft. Ne-Yo - Ghostface Killah// My favorite emcee really puts himself out there with this lil flava of RNB. >> Ink My Whole Body - Wiz Khalifa // I can relate because I ink my whole body because I just don’t give a fuck. >> Bam Bam - Sister Nancy // It’s not Hip Hop however every hip hop club I went to in Seattle played this track. Everybody starts bouncing and the girls get down and sexy. It is a perfect track to get intimate at the club.

>> Dada Life - Rolling Stones T- Shirt (Chuckie Remix) // The original by Dada life was good but something about the bouncy electro drop Chuckie adds just gives this song that extra punch. >> Imagine Dragons It’s Time (Famties Remix) // Famties are definetly a group to keep an eye on if you like electro, this remix is very fun and refreshing. >> Zedd - Spectrum (feat. Matthew Koma) [Extended Mix] // Amazing stuff has been coming out from this German Electro DJ and this is definitely one of his best, just wait for the final drop. >> The Mavrik- When The Bass Goes Boom // I like it when the Bass goes Boom and shakes everything in the room!”...Nuff said. >> Far Too Loud - Firestorm // From Far Too sounds newest EP, this is an epic track with a very funky sample.
