“Interspaces” Polish print exhibition Hot Bed Press Printmakers Studios

Interspaces, the ground-breaking Polish print exhibition, is a captivating exploration of the interplay between print, design, and human perception. This showcase pushes the boundaries of traditional printmaking, unveiling a mesmerising collection that transcends conventional artistic genres.

About

The exhibition features an array of contemporary Polish artists who employ various printmaking techniques to create stunning visual narratives. From etchings and litho-graphs to screenprints and woodcuts, each artwork resonates with a sense of experimentation and creative audacity. The artists skilfully manipulate the print medium, transforming it into a dynamic channel for expressing complex ideas and emotions.

Interspaces aims to challenge the viewers' perceptions by exploring the interconnections between physical spaces, virtual realms, and the human psyche. The exhibited prints invite contemplation on the intricate relationships between tangible and intangible dimensions, provoking introspection and stimulating intellectual engagement.

The exhibition space at Hot Bed Press is prepared to enhance the immersive experience. Carefully curated arrangements of prints, and interactive installations create an ambiance that encourages visitors to engage deeply with the artworks. This multi-sensory approach amplifies the impact of each print, fostering a profound connection between the observer and the artistic vision.

Interspaces is a testament to the thriving contemporary printmaking scene in Poland and its ability to reinvent itself while preserving traditional techniques. This new exhibition serves as a catalyst for dialogue, pushing the boundaries of what printmaking can achieve and inspiring a new generation of artists to explore uncharted artistic territories.

The author is looking for connections between the graphic technique and new printing solutions, their mutual correlations.

Graphic experiments together with the use of printing technologies trigger cognitive desire, allow for experience, creating methods that contribute to the enrichment of the workshop.

Graphic materials and technologies used in the field of printing become, as a consequence, the basis for the creation of original graphic works. Thread of creative artistic search, visual research is related to the issue of meeting: with selected, meaningful places: close, known or just being met. Searching for values, anchored in specific places - architecture, landscape - is one of the possible paths of artistic journeys. Meetings with other people, places, spaces make Mind maps. The memories captured in the frames convince about the importance of spatial quality in the surrounding.

2019 -7th International Print Biennal, Guanlan, China; work in the collection.

2023 - 2nd prize at the Arte Grafica Italiana2022 competition.

Works in the field of graphics and drawing. The subject matter concerns the phenomenon of spatiality, fascination with nature, observation and analysis of the coexistence of art and science. The inspiration is also the way of writing the graphic language of your favorite thematic area: landscape. The carrier of artistic transformations is the play of light and shadow on the surface of the water, this fleeting record of the world around us. His realism is more and more often shaped in an abstract formula. These borderlands constitute the image and artistic form of the last cycles.

Hanna Grzonka-Karwacka.

In year 1999 she graduated from the University of Silesia, Institute of Art from Professor Krystyna Filipowska’s class in graphic art and from Anna Kowalczyk-Klus’ class in drawing. Since 2005 she has worked at the Art Institute in Cieszyn, in the Department of Drawing, where she runs the Drawing Studio. In 2009 she received her Ph.D in Fine Art. In 2019 She has been granted the title of associate professor.

She is interested in printmaking, drawing and animation. Her works were presented at several individual exhibitions and many collective ones in Poland and abroad. In her recent series she is mainly interested in the concept of a memory trace- engram, which despite having been created many times in childhood, did not fade, degrade or become deformed. Her works refer to identity, memory and traces.

I am primarily interested in a memory trace - engram, which, despite the fact that it was created in childhood, has not passed away, has not been degraded and has not succumbed to distortion.

My recent works refer to autobiographical memory, and its traces are images of my personal relationship with the past.

I realized that the recorded images and experiences from my childhood helped me understand and tame situations in adulthood.

Janina Kotyœ-Kublicka has made several national and international exhibitions, including Norway, Mexico, Liege, Brno, Bologna, Park Essen, Darmstadt, and Poland.

Janina Kotyœ-Kublicka’s artistic work has remained remarkably consistent andcohesive since the 1960s. It emerges from the fears and anxieties of thecontemporary world. The artist has consistently pursued the exploration of threats to the modern human condition, devoid of heroism and stripped of pathos. She has revealed the state of humanity in contemporary times, with an ancient value reminiscent of the futile efforts of Tantalus and Sisyphus.

Kamila is a Graphic Designer with a PhD from the University of Silesia in Poland and First Class Honours Degree in MA Design LAB from Manchester School of Art. Kamila is currently a Marketing Director at UAP Ltd and she is a member of Hot Bed Press in Salford, Manchester.

Her primary focus is communicating complex subject matter in visually effective ways.

Kamila is particularly interested in letterpress, poster design, typography and graphic design for various publications. Her posters have received a distinction by the Taipei International Design Awards and has been shortlisted for exhibit at Shenzhen Guan Shanyue Art Museum, and Moscow Museum in Russia with her Typography Posters.

She has published 3 books; ‘British Stuff,’ the first edition in 2013, the second in 2016 and illustrated children’s book in 2018.

Kamila is showcasing a typographic posters and art installation. Typography on the streets of Manchester shows the city’s industrial history and its various intertwining cultures. Artist asked what people think about Manchester, and more precisely, If they could describe Manchester in a one word, what would it be? As a result Kamila created a series of posters inspired by the Typography in the city. Next based on the designed posters she created the art installation. Installation consists of ten fabric prints, printed on a sheer fabric. Thanks to the transparent properties of the material used a new image quality is obtained. Multi-layered installation is associated with the dynamics of the city in the context of its typography. The city can give you a visual pleasure. The typosphere of the city is constantly changing. The lively character of the city inspired the creation of the installation City Type.

Whichever medium I use, whether it is a printmaking or painting, my inspiration lately has been the passing of time, dying and rebirth. I mostly create figurative compositions; symbolism and colour are important to me. In the presented prints the form of diptychs emphasises the duality of the world.

The matrix is not used to reproduce the image, but to change it. Used in various juxtapositions, it allows to develop the cycle of the graphic story or to build a different narrative.

Stanis³aw Kluska and the Drawing & Painting Studio of prof. Maciej Bieniasz was awarded with a medal. Between 1996 and 2011 he was a curator of the ENGRAM Gallery in the Krystyna Bochenek Cultural Centre in Katowice. Since 2009, he has been involved with the Bieguny [Poles] art. project - a laboratory of ideas and exchange of experiences, in view of the expanding territory of new forms of graphic image. Academic tutor since 1997, obtained a status of a titular professor in 2020. Currently runs a Drawing and Performative Actions Studio at the Institute of Visual Arts at the Faculty of Art and Education in Cieszyn.Member of ZPAP in Katowice and the Association of the International Triennial of Graphic Arts in Kraków. His practice incorporates elements of drawing, printmaking and performance. Author of numerous individual exhibitions and participant of many national and international presentations and collective shows.Lives and works in Katowice and Koszarawa Bystra.

Adam Molenda commented in the catalogue of the exhibition "Graphic Polyptych" by Krzysztof Kula, presented at the ENGRAM Gallery in Katowice in 2000: "Distance. Above all, distance. Printmaking? What kind of printmaking? Only on the surface (...) ".

In his reflections, Adam Molenda called the printmaker's workshop "a safe haven of norms", suggesting that beneath its surface "a truly open and free nature can survive. The nature of the performer (...)". And he concluded: "Reality is being fulfilled before our eyes. Performance..."

The undersigned had a chance to witness the "Graphic Polyptych" at the University Gallery of the Art Institute in Cieszyn, where the author of the "Polyptych" is still currently employed. The large-format prints were displayed on the walls of the Cieszyn Gallery in an unconventional manner. My reading of these works at the time was focused mainly on their structure. In the elegant, classical intaglio prints, I found the fractal nature of their matrices, as well as in the compositional arrangements of the prints on the Gallery walls. I recognized the process and foreshadowing of Infinity.

A little later I became acquainted with the ENGRAM Gallery in Katowice, of which Krzysztof Kula was the animator, curator and a host. In the author's project "Poles", he organised meetings of artistic graphic duos at Engram and curated accompanying exhibitions. Since 2010, I have participated in various stages of this long-standing project. Consequently, on several occasions I have taken part in "polar" meetings with other printmakers, and I was able to experience successive transformations of Krzysztof’s Polyptych. In 2017, as I recall, I assisted in the graphic 'reincarnation' of the burned Polyptych matrices in the open air. At the 113 IP Gallery in Czêstochowa, in an installation on an ellipse plan, among the remains of these matrices, the stereoscopic animations "Ignis" and "Elevation" testified to the magical rites I had participated in and documented in Koszarawa-Bystraja.

Krzysztof Kula returns to Gallery 113 in March 2023. In the next rotation of his graphic galaxy, he will present the results of its evolution and transmutation of his Polyptych. Nothing is lost in Krzysztof's graphic cosmos. Therefore we might witness how his Polyptych resists entropy. Likewise life itself.

Thank you, Krzysztof.

A sphere in Euclidean space is a part of space bounded by a sphere, considered an ideal shape by the Pythagoreans. We live in spheres whose boundaries are defined by spheres, horizonsranges of physical or metaphysical possibilities. We describe the world closest to us as the reality around us. The series "Spheres" is a form of the visual experience of collapsing a classically constructed image into closed spheres, a transcription on their surfaces of flat graphical images that are fragments of reality. The works combine traditional graphics with digital graphics and photography, generated in 3D space with selectively used elements of generative graphics. It is inspired by the post-industrial landscape and the modern urbanism replacing it. The rapid changes in this area provoke a discourse on transience.

A matrix, a print, and a trace inspired him to create "seals" and "stamps" in the linocut technique, with specific shapes reflected on a prepared substrate, allowing me to create various compositions. The works were created from 9 matrices. The matrices were reflected in black and white, which gave an additional effect of strong contrasts. The assumption of multiple reflections allows me to create unique works.

In the years 2000–2019, he dealt with digital graphics. Currently, the author has returned to painting. Creates pictures on paper. He developed his own painting technique consisting in layering tempera paint and scratching it with sharp tools, thanks to which the paintings gain more spatiality.

In the years 2020-2021, he produced a series of paintings entitled “The Sanctuary of Nature”, presented at the Polish Institute in Manchester. In 2022, I started a series entitled “Illustrations for the Book of Mountains”.

The author exhibited his works in galleries in Japan, Great Britain, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, and the United States.

Ryszard Pielesz's painting can be classified as informel abstraction. Allusions to mountain landscape motifs are visible in his works. The author draws his inspiration from climbing in the Dolomites and the Tatras.

Jaros³aw Skutnik was born in 1963 in Kropiwnica /Podlaskie Voivodeship/.

Studies:

1985-1990 – University of Silesia in Katowice, Art Institute in Cieszyn, 1988-1993 - State Higher School of Fine Arts in Poznañ.

Since 1994 he has been working at the Art Institute at the Faculty of Arts in Cieszyn at the University of Silesia in Katowice. Currently, he runs classes in classical and experimental graphics and multimedia.

In his artistic work, he focuses on graphic arts, computer graphics, drawing, painting, and he also creates installations using experimental graphic techniques. In his creative activity, he looks for opportunities to combine traditional graphic techniques with new media. In the philosophy of artistic exploration, Skutnik focuses on the category of the matrix as the original idea, the beginning and the source of creation.

He is the author of classic graphic works and experimental activities presented at many domestic and foreign exhibitions.

The presented graphic works are a kind of artist's game with the matrix, which sometimes defines the reflected image; other times, it is a pretext to modify the print until it finally disappears, is destroyed, or obliterated, as in the graphics entitled In Memoriam.

In the In Memoriam works, on a piece of paper with dimensions corresponding to the format of catalogs dedicated to the work of deceased artists, the author reprinted the contents of individual catalogs page by page. The layered text and the reproductions of works permeating it created abstract compositions - specific forms of epitaphs.

Triptychs entitled City and Leaf-Letter are examples of using one matrix to make three different prints/images. This process is an attempt at an artistic break with the model meaning of the matrix and its classical use. Other works include classic relief prints and gravure prints.

MEMORIES FADE SLOWLY

Our memories are like colourful postcards. With time, however, what was lively and vivid, starts fading away... It is getting harder to bring back details, places and times get confused. Everything dissolved in the haze. Soon, you can only go back to those wonderful moments, supposedly unforgettable, when watching old photos. My cycle represents just that. The starting point for each work is a colourful landscape, which is “destroyed” by subsequent layers of print. With progress of work the details vanish, colours fade away, and the original meaning disappears. New quality is created.

The theme of the matrix, imprint, print, and trace served as inspiration for creating a series of graphics that utilize geometric elements cut from a matrix, through which I created unique, one-time-only traces. I somewhat deconstructed the process of creating and printing graphics, where multiple similar but not identical prints are obtained from a single matrix. This time, the elements of the "matrix" change, and the final result in the form of the print is unique. I will employ the technique of color linocut to create three cycles of graphics, in which the main roles are played by the circle, triangle, and square. The theme of my works revolves around confinement and the attempt at liberation. I aimed to depict, in a symbolic manner, the emotions accompanying this process.

The language of the Universe consists of traditional geometrical shapes which possess complex meanings and fragments of the nature closed in a visual sign, yet still bearing some resemblance to the reality. The geometrical structure makes a regular rhythm and organizes the surface, it visualizes the relationship between the physical presence in space and the inner world which encompasses a plethora of experiences, emotions, feelings, events and situations. The presence of fictional objects indicates the duality of nature, its objective and transcendent dimension.

Angelika Zajdlic

Angelika Zajdlic (1995) is a Cieszyn based ambitious young glass artist and graphic designer. She mainly creates stained glass, abstract geometric graphics, paintings, graphic design, and illustration; she is experienced in visual identities. Angelika's visual trademark style is a result of combining handmade graphics with well-thought-out shapes; old papers, cut&paste and illustrative elements with digital design. Her works, whether figurative or geometric-based, are very plastic and alert to the medium's specificities. She claims to seek inspiration in human anatomy, fashion magazines, architectures, nature and in the art of chance. She is interested in the world of nature (flora and fauna), focusing on the in-depth analysis of form and matter. Using the language of forms and shapes, she strives for synthesis and visual minimalism. Zajdlic cares about the ambiguity of reading her works, opening the space for their own interpretation.
