On May 7, Dr. Linda Sullivan, was recognized as the 2017 Human Cancer Hero for Puppy Up Madison. “The Human Cancer Hero is a person who has overcome extraordinary odds or challenges, or are an inspiration to the Puppy Up committee,” says Dr. Kai Biu Shiu, Puppy Up Madison co-founder. Dr. Linda Sullivan

Along with a Human Cancer Hero, a Canine Cancer Hero is also selected by the Puppy Up Madison committee. Beth Viney, Puppy Up Madison co-founder, and Ann Lippincott, Puppy Up Madison committee member, nominated Dr. Sullivan. She was selected with a unanimous vote from the committee.

“Dr. Sullivan is a fighter,” says Viney. “She is a true hero for driving down this horrible road of cancer with dignity, pride and humility.” Viney has known Dr. Sullivan since the 1990’s when she participated in the Dog Jog, which was organized by Dr. Sullivan. In 2005, Viney’s dog Czar joined the ranks of the Pet Pals program, an animal therapy program at the UW Children’s Hospital. Dr. Sullivan helped found Pet Pals with Drs. Chris Olsen and Linda Teeter over 20 years ago and remains chair of the program. “Dr. Sullivan has been a tremendous role model, teacher, community advocate and inspiration to me for many years,” says Viney. As the 2017 Hero, Dr. Sullivan attended two media appearances to talk about her cancer, and was officially recognized at the Puppy Up Madison event.

Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. You’ve just completed one of the most rigorous professional curriculums, you’ve earned your Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. Congratulations! It’s time to be proud, walk tall, look people squarely in the eye, shake their hand firmly and confidently and most importantly – smile! You’ve accomplished that, which is for most veterinarians a lifelong quest. Now, the learning curve starts all over. Your knowledge of the basic principles of medicine, surgery, pathology and clinical pathology will never be greater; the new challenge? Applying these principles to the practice of veterinary medicine. It’s time to identify your opportunity; it abounds in animal health. Don’t settle for the same old manner of doing things. It’s time to treat those complex medical cases, perform those challenging surgeries, don’t think you always need to settle for referring these cases just when they become most interesting. Once a week do something professionally that makes your palms sweat and resist the temptation to embrace routine! It’s time to put your feet in the sand and dip your toes in the ocean, yes, but it’s also time to roll up your sleeves and prepare to do the heavy lifting. It’s easy to talk the talk, now you must walk the walk. Bring value to all you do – your life, your practice, your professional relationships, your personal relationships. Be intentional with your personal finances, take care of yourself physically and mentally. Don’t hesitate to reach out for assistance. Our profession is a small one with great resources: leverage them! Ladies and gentlemen, our profession needs you. There is a lot of good work to be done. Please know, you can make a difference. Don’t Judge A Book by Its Cover

I reflected on this saying last week when we received a call into the office from an upset client. Long story short…A client felt the clinic judged them and their vehicle, and as a result assumed they couldn’t afford another pet and/or proper veterinary care. The opposite was true. The individual has a PhD, is financially healthy, but chose to wear average clothes and keeping his vehicle clean wasn’t a priority. I have been walking around with this example for the past week and began to reflect on past experiences. For example, a year ago, my kids and I went to a retailer that sold large rocks and engraved them with the family name. We were looking to buy one for Father’s Day. It was a casual day of dress for me, athletic pants and a sweatshirt. When we were talking with the salesperson I pointed out a rock I wanted a price on. He looked at me and said “Oh, you will never be able to afford that one. It is way out of your budget.” We never discussed my budget, but right away I was judged and it was assumed I didn’t have the financial resources. I was steaming mad. If it wouldn’t have been for the fact there weren’t any other retailers in the area, I would have left and went to a different retailer. But guess what, I didn’t get that bigger rock. We had been saving up for this gift, so I know we would have been able to afford it. Yep, they lost a big sale. All because they judged me without getting to know me. How many of you, or your staff members, judge your clients without really knowing them? How many of you assume a client can’t afford something so you don’t even offer it as a treatment option? I would recommend not judging, but instead let the client decide what they can and can’t afford, instead of making that decision for them. You might be surprised at their financial resources and commitment to their animals. We are all guilty of judging others based on first impressions. Yes, sometimes we are right, but many times we are not. Are you leaving business transactions on the table because of these judgments? l

Wisconsin Veterinary Medical Association Strengthens Wisconsin FFA Through Financial Support The Wisconsin Veterinary Medical Association’s (WVMA) recent donation to the Wisconsin FFA Foundation will benefit the more than 20,000 Wisconsin FFA student members statewide and help support the Veterinary Science Proficiency Award. The Wisconsin FFA is experiencing its highest membership level in 37 years, and the increased financial support from generous donors, including the WVMA, make it possible to accommodate this growth. The Wisconsin FFA Foundation also celebrated a record year, with more than $614,000 raised in 2015-16. Through this achievement and the support of its many benefactors, the Foundation is able to provide additional programs, leadership training and educational opportunities to these deserving students. Wisconsin FFA prepares today’s youth to be tomorrow’s agricultural industry leaders. Ransomware: Key Steps to Avoid it or Reduce its Impact By Steve Newton, WDA Insurance & Service Corp. Ransomware is one of the most talked about and discussed IT topics in the world today. Ransomware (a type of Malware) is software that hackers use to infiltrate your network, lock or encrypt your practice data and demand a ransom from you in order to un-lock it. A common form of ransom requested is payment made in Bitcoin because it is very difficult to track. There are multiple proactive steps an office can take to reduce your chance of a Ransomware attack or limit the impact of an attack if you become a victim of one. First, make sure all team members receive “Basic Training” on the most common ways a Ransomware attack can occur. Ransomware attacks are usually carried out by a “Trojan” that is able to enter your network when someone accidentally downloads a file while working in your office or when another security vulnerability is found in your network. The first simple, but impactful, step the team can take to protect your office is to limit or restrict the use of internet browsing while at the office. When a user clicks on a link from a webpage, there are many different things that can occur. One action that can occur is that an unsafe file could be downloaded to that user’s computer within your practice. In order reduce the chance of this occurring consider defining browsing permissions and make sure you only navigate to well known and respected websites.

The next essential step you should take to reduce the risk of a Ransomware attack is to ensure you are partnering with a well respected and dedicated IT expert within your industry. Your IT partner should be keeping up with the latest security trends in the industry and should have a game plan on how to mitigate your risk. Some common steps a strong IT partner may recommend in order to try and help you reduce the chance or limit the impact of a Ransomware attack are: 1) Keep up-to-date with patches for your operating system and other software programs within your practice in order to fix the vulnerabilities within software programs that are found over time. 2) Back-up and encrypt your data off-site. If you become a victim of an attack, having a clean and reliable copy of your data is essential to limiting the impact of an attack. 3) Invest in a quality antivirus and malware software solution. Once the software is installed, make sure that software is set to automatically update and complete routine scans of your network.

Pregnancy in the Veterinary Clinic By Leslie Ptak, Department of Labor/OSHA compliance assistance specialist One of the most frequent questions that comes up at the WVMAOSHA alliance committee meetings is, “What about pregnant employees?” Exposure to reproductive hazards in the workplace is a concern, especially in a field that has so many female workers. Reproductive hazards are substances or agents that may affect the reproductive health of women or men or the ability of couples to have healthy children. These hazards may cause problems such as infertility, miscarriage, and birth defects. They may affect the employee’s ability to breastfeed or result in developmental disorders in children.

Put the list of hazards in writing and make sure employees are aware of the list and have ready access to it. • Have a written, clear and well-communicated policy about potential exposures to reproductive hazards. The policy should make clear that it is the responsibility of the employee to inform her employer, in writing, about her pregnancy. Employees should have ready access to this policy. • Provide new-hire and annual training about exposures to reproductive hazards that could be expected at the clinic. Employees should be encouraged to take the lead in the training, such as developing the materials, conducting the training and making sure that the training is done.

The Madison walk is the largest cancer walk in the country with over $500,000 raised since being founded four years ago. Dr. Sullivan has been a committee member since its founding.

• Follow safety and health requirements that are available. For instance, the Department of Health Services has specific regulations for ionizing radiation and OSHA has standards for ethylene oxide. Evaluate your workplace to make sure there are no serious hazards, train your employees in safe work practices, and provide the equipment they need to do their job and stay safe. • Make a plan for pregnant and breastfeeding workers. Some workplace exposures can be more dangerous for pregnant or breastfeeding workers than for other workers. List the jobs in the clinic that could be hazardous for pregnant or breastfeeding workers, and share this information with all employees. Offer employees the option to temporarily transfer into safer jobs or have another worker take on certain tasks temporarily. All employees should understand that it is the policy of the clinic to offer these types of re-assignments. l

Food Armor® Foundation Announces Board of Directors The Food Armor® Foundation is proud to announce the seating of the Food Armor® Foundation Board of Directors. The roots of the Food Armor® Foundation run deep. While Food Armor® itself was born just over seven years ago, the Wisconsin Veterinary Medical Association (WVMA) has been working on the issue of proper drug use in animal agriculture for decades. ®

In 1995, the WVMA created the Best Practices Taskforce which was tasked with developing an action tool for managing all drug usage on Wisconsin dairy farms. Setting the stage for transparency and accountability regarding drug use, it emphasized four related but separate areas of drug management: prescription writing, reconciliation of drugs, protocol writing, and record keeping.

Continuing that effort, the WVMA and Professional Dairy Producers of Wisconsin (PDPW) partnered in 2010 to develop a program that could accomplish a Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) plan for drug use on dairies which addressed how drugs were being used. The emphasis was on identifying the roles people represented on the farm’s VeterinarianClient-Patient-Relationship (VCPR) team. The result was an action plan clearly identifying responsibilities of key people. Food Armor® is a grass-roots approach satisfying the unique characteristics of each dairy’s VCPR team. The program has since further evolved into a certifiable model detailing requirements for antibiotic stewardship and includes third party verification. “Food Armor® was built on the need to proactively address drug residues and proper drug use,” says Kim Brown Pokorny, WVMA executive director. “The evolution of this program demonstrates the need for the program and the farm to fork movement on the national level.” The Board of Directors includes: Brian Lubbers, DVM, PhD, DACVCP, is currently the Director of the Clinical Microbiology section of the Kansas State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. His teaching and research interests are antimicrobial therapy, antimicrobial resistance and antimicrobial susceptibility testing in food animals. Following a few years in private practice he joined Kansas State University in 2005 as a Clinical Instructor (Agricultural Practices), where he completed his PhD in Microbiology (Pharmacology). Kim Stackhouse, PhD, is the Director of Sustainability for JBS USA where she is responsible for coordinating the JBS North American sustainability program, inclusive of the company’s beef, pork, poultry, case ready, cattle feeding, transportation, and branded product business. Kim received her PhD in Animal Science from the University of California, Davis and was a postdoctoral fellow at Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine. M. Gatz Riddell, DVM, MS, DACT, received his DVM degree from Kansas State University in 1977, became a Diplomate of the American College of Theriogenologists in 1982 and received his MS from Auburn in 1984. He is a Past President of both the American Association of Bovine Practitioners (AABP) and the North American Veterinary Conference (NAVC). Dr. Riddell was the Executive Vice President of the AABP from 2005 until the end of 2016. Bruce Feinberg, is currently the Senior Director of Global Protein/ Dairy Quality Systems at McDonald’s Corporation. A food industry executive, Feinberg has worked across a variety of food industry

segments starting in 1977 before joining McDonald’s Corporation in November 1998 as Senior Director, US Quality Systems responsible for the development and deployment of quality systems for U.S. food suppliers and distributors. David Rhoda, DVM, has been instrumental in many capacities in the WVMA including the chairperson of the WVMA AMDUCA Taskforce, chairperson of the Best Practices Taskforce which set the stage for transparency and accountability in drug usage on dairies, and chairperson of the Drug Residue Task Force (now the Food Armor® Committee) transferring his chairmanship in late 2014. Charles (Chuck) Adami, is the President and CEO of Equity Cooperative Livestock Sales Association, which is Wisconsin’s largest and the nation’s second largest independent livestock marketing agency. Chuck joined the cooperative in 2000 as the vice president of finance and CFO. He assumed the position of president and CEO in 2002. Keith York, is a sixth generation dairy farmer from Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. He owns Merry-Water Farms with his brother and cousin. Merry-Water milks 1,600 cows, raises 1,500 heifers on the farm and crops 720 acres. York is a past president of PDPW and the Wisconsin Beef Council. Merry-Water Farms is a Food Armor® Certified Farm. Danielle Schuld Elected to WVMA Executive Board By Bailey Quam, WVMA communications and project specialist Student Representative, Danielle Schuld grew up in Portage, Wis. and attended the University of Wisconsin – Madison for her undergraduate degree. Her interest in veterinary medicine began by shadowing veterinarians on the weekend. “I loved meeting all of the animals and their owners and enjoyed forming relationships with both,” says Schuld. “This love for animals, science and teaching others pointed me towards veterinary medicine.” Going into her second year of veterinary medical school, Schuld is excited to become a liaison between the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine and the WVMA. Danielle Schuld

“My membership provides an incredible opportunity to network with veterinarians, get hands on experience during convention and externships and to connect with industry professionals,” she says. “It means a lot to be a part of an organization that promotes lifelong learning, mentorship, friendship and will fight politically for our profession.”

During this two year position, Schuld is excited to help offer more opportunities for her fellow veterinary students. “I hope to continue to develop more opportunities for students to see the many aspects of veterinary medicine and give them chances to network with private practitioners as well as professionals in industry. The saying goes ‘it’s not what you know but who you know,’ and the WVMA can provide the ‘who’ for students,” she says. “I want to continue to promote WVMA involvement in reducing student debt as well as connect students with enthusiastic, positive mentors.” Along with her new position on the WVMA Executive Board, Schuld is one of two AVMA representatives for the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine and is active in the Equine and Bovine Clubs. Outside of school, she is a member of the Millennium Choir at her church, enjoys rock climbing and other outdoor activities. After graduation, Schuld plans on going into large animal medicine while incorporating her interest of acupuncture. l

Jennifer Walker, DVM, PhD, Dip. ACVPM, is the Director of Stewardship for Dean Foods. In this role she has been putting to use her expertise in on-farm milk quality and her passion for animal welfare by working with customers, suppliers and dairy farmers to develop an industry wide standard that promotes the good welfare of dairy cattle.
