“WVMA membership means more opportunities to learn about issues in the veterinary field as well as veterinary medicine itself,” she says. “I am hoping that being active with the WVMA will give me more insight on what veterinarians are dealing with locally and nationally.” During this two-year position, Hintz would like to see more student involvement in WVMA events and to grow her skill set. “I decided that becoming a student representative would be a good way to improve my interpersonal and communication skills while networking with veterinarians,” she says. “I also wanted to be more involved and help plan opportunities outside of school for classmates to learn and practice veterinary skills and hear about different veterinarians’ experiences on the job.” Along with her new position on the WVMA Executive Board, Hintz is active in the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine Bovine, and Small Ruminants Clubs. Outside of school she enjoys running, hiking in parks, riding horses, hugging her favorite cows, and spending time with family and friends. After graduation, Hintz plans on continuing her passion for agriculture by practicing large animal medicine with a focus on dairy cattle. l

The Challenges of Animal Welfare Discussions Over the past decade I’ve been on the frontline of some interesting animal welfare discussions. I was part of the team that drafted the WVMA’s original five guiding principles for food animal welfare, adopted in 2008. In December 2013, Mercy for Animals released a video of improper handling of disabled dairy cows from a northeastern Wisconsin dairy farm. In response to that, I made over 20 presentations for the WVMA educating producers across the Midwest about humane handling of down and disabled dairy cows. In 2010 the HSUS arrived at the WVMA’s doorstep inquiring about our support for legislation banning dairy cow tail docking. This set off a flurry of activity to draft a position regarding this issue. It was the dairy cow tail docking debate that really opened my eyes to the complexity of engaging in meaningful discussions with farmers and colleagues about animal welfare issues. At the root of the difficulty engaging in these discussions is the delicacy at which we handle exchanges of our moral consciousness. Judo-Christianity teaches in Genesis that God gives man dominion over all the creatures of the Earth, which establishes a firm ethos for kind care and oversight of animals for many of us. Other world religions also teach respect for animals. In our daily lives the care, management, and treatment of animals subconsciously fulfills this moral obligation. Good animal care is a core moral bearing. In the spring of 2010 various conversations with dairy farmer clients about tail docking made me aware of this dimension of animal welfare. In private, one-on-one conversation, I could sense a bit of unease with farmers when we spoke about the tail docking issue. That March I was asked to give an update on animal welfare concerns for the local technical college farm class awards dinner, which gave me a chance to test this idea of a connection between moral consciousness and animal welfare. I personally knew at least eighty percent of the farmers in the audience that evening; enough that they trusted me, and considered me part of their ‘tribe’. We had

shared experiences and values. I started my presentation with two questions. First: How many here believe they have a moral/ethical responsibility to provide good, kind, humane care to their animals? Everyone’s hand went up. Second question: How many here believe they fulfill that responsibility? Again, everyone raised his or her hand. This moment clearly illustrated the connection of animal care practices to core moral beliefs. Rarely, if ever, do we discuss core religious beliefs. We respect each other’s decisions, realizing that while we might have slight differences, we are all of good moral character. However, when someone, especially those we don’t have much in common with, question our management or treatment of animals, it is easy to feel insulted. It is not a superficial insult either; rather a deep cutting one because it calls into question our moral under-pinning. Animal welfare discussions can easily impale the shell of our inner moral core, often eliciting a deeply visceral, emotional response. As this emotional defense response kicks in, logical thought processes evaporate. Effective listening frequently shuts down. Therefore, great care needs to be taken when engaging in animal welfare discussions to not offend one another in these conversations. It is very helpful to try to find some areas of agreement before getting into the specifics of the topic at hand. When morality issues are challenged, it is common to seek affirmation and support from our ‘tribe’. A common response to criticism of animal care is: “we’ve always done it this way”. Citing precedent is not justification for our questioned care or procedures; instead it is the reason this discussion occurs. By acknowledging that the questioned practice was once considered an acceptable standard practice, one can gain credibility in the ‘tribe’ and we can open the door to more logical conversations. Making this connection is crucial to moving the conversation forward in a constructive way. CONTINUED ON PAGE 4

Pentobarbital Warning By the National Renderers Association FDA has warned that animals euthanized using pentobarbital or other barbiturates should be excluded from rendering or other operations that utilize salvaged skeletal muscle, organs or other tissues for animal food of any kind. Pentobarbital residues in animal tissues are most likely the result of euthanasia of dairy cattle, horses or other animals not intended for human consumption. Pentobarbital is stable in tissues, resists degradation at rendering temperatures, and persists in the environment. The National Renderers Association is calling on all veterinarians to assist in preventing contamination of carcasses intended for rendering. Rendering is by far the most sustainable method of recycling and making useful products from these animals. Alternative methods such as captive bolt should be used for euthanasia of these animals. l Source: National Renderers Assoc. **Note, the WVMA has pulled together a group of industry stakeholders to address the rendering challenges we currently face in Wisconsin. Interestingly, three years later in 2013, when I repeated the fore mentioned question sequence at an extension sponsored animal well-being meeting, very few people raised their hands in response to the questions. This surprised me initially. After reflecting on the situation, I realized that very few in the audience knew me. I was a stranger. Rarely do we expose our core beliefs to strangers. It is easy to intimidate others when engaging, especially if they are strangers.

Conversations about animal welfare are best done one-on-one. Opening minds to new ideas one by one will slowly move the animal welfare needle. Those new ideas and perspectives will slowly spread through the ‘tribe’ in other one-on-one conversations.

Does Tax Reform Affect My Veterinary Practice? By Brian L. Anderson, DeWitt Ross Stevens, s.c. How are veterinary practices affected by the tax reform law passed in December 2017? The most significant tax effects are described below. 1. Reduction of C Corporation Tax Rate. If your veterinary practice is taxed as an ordinary corporation (a so-called C corporation), then good news for you is that, beginning in 2018, your corporation will be taxed on its net profits at a flat rate of 21%. The old set of graduated rates up to 35% is gone.
3. Limited Deductions for Meals and Entertainment. Before 2018, your veterinary practice could deduct 50% of expenses incurred for business meals and/or entertainment. The new law eliminates the deduction, except for (a) recreational or social activities primarily for the benefit of employees, such as holiday parties or employee outings; (b) meals for employees on the business premises of the veterinary practice, and (c) expenses that are directly related to business meetings of employees or owners.

Ask OSHA By Leslie Ptak, Department of Labor/OSHA compliance assistance specialist This month’s article is dedicated to readers’ questions.

safety. Generally, OSHA does not concern itself with ceiling tiles, whether there is an accumulation of dust on them or not. Some tiles manufactured before 1980 may be asbestos-containing, so every employer should be curious about ceiling tile content if they work in a pre-1980 building. Asbestos-containing materials are a concern when the asbestos becomes friable and releases fibers into the air. It is easy enough to determine if your ceiling tiles are creating a hazard. Invite the Wisconsin Onsite Consultation Program1 to your establishment and have them conduct a survey. They can (1) take a sample of the tile to determine if it is asbestos, and (2) conduct air monitoring if it is. Best of all, their services are at no cost to employers. If the person conducting the walkthrough of your facility was concerned that the dust was a risk to patient safety, then this is not an OSHA matter. Question #2: Can we keep gum or other foods in surgery prep areas? Reply: Cross contamination concerns are prevalent in all health care facilities. OSHA does not want the gum or other food product to become contaminated with either a toxic chemical or an infectious agent. Regarding exposures to chemicals there are two OSHA standards that apply: • 29 CFR 1910.141 (g)(2) states: “Eating and drinking areas. No employee shall be allowed to consume food or beverages in a toilet room nor in any area exposed to a toxic material.”
Where infectious agents are concerned, there is a third OSHA standard that applies: • 1910.141(h) states: “Food handling. All employee food service facilities and operations shall be carried out in accordance with sound hygienic principles. In all places of employment where all or part of the food service is provided, the food dispensed shall be wholesome, free from spoilage, and shall be processed, prepared, handled, and stored in such a manner as to be protected against contamination.”
This food handling standard is supported by established standard precautions for veterinary personnel.2 The guidelines state that “It is important to provide an employee break room or area for eating and drinking. Such activities should be prohibited in laboratories, treatment rooms, and other patient care and housing areas. Separate, appropriately labeled refrigerators should be used for human food, animal food, biologics, and laboratory diagnostic samples. Dishware for human use should be washed and stored away from animal-care areas.” One suggestion OSHA would have for veterinary medical clinics is to use the NASPHV’s Model Infection Control Plan, available online and listed in this article (see Resources). This document addresses personal protective equipment, protective actions during veterinary procedures, environmental infection control, and occupational health. It is a terrific review of the NASPHV guidelines and any clinic’s operations can easily adapt them. CONTINUED ON PAGE 10

Question #3: What is the best way for clinics to keep the clutter down, especially in employee areas? Reply: The first thing to realize is that there are three OSHA standards that require workplaces to be neat and orderly. • 1910.22(a)(1): All places of employment, passageways, storerooms, service rooms, and walking-working surfaces are kept in a clean, orderly, and sanitary condition. • 1910.22(a)(2): The floor of each workroom is maintained in a clean and, to the extent feasible, in a dry condition. When wet processes are used, drainage must be maintained and, to the extent feasible, dry standing places, such as false floors, platforms, and mats must be provided. • 1910.22(a)(3): Walking-working surfaces are maintained free of hazards such as sharp or protruding objects, loose boards, corrosion, leaks, spills, snow, and ice. One industry that struggles with clutter is construction and a frequent OSHA citation is for poor housekeeping on construction projects. Smart contractors realized that they just had to “bite the bullet” and set aside a period of time at the end of each day to clear the clutter. That way they begin work every morning in an uncluttered space and with few slip and trip hazards. A checklist of the most frequent clutter
causes can be developed and used. Set aside 15 minutes or so daily and run through the checklist items. If preventing clutter does not become a habit, perhaps cleaning it up will. Question #4: What do I do with the chemicals that my clinic generates, such as glutaraldehyde? The UW School of Veterinary Medicine’s reach extends to almost every county in the state.
Our specialists provide guidance to the state’s veterinarians and farmers in areas of expertise from anesthesia to food animal production to zoological medicine. UW Veterinary Care began with 10 specialties in 1983; today, it has more than 20. Our teaching hospital, UW Veterinary Care, helped treat the animals of more than 7,500 Wisconsin citizens in 2016-17. UWVC saw nearly 26,500 patient visits in FY17. Nearly 1,300 DVM alumni live in Wisconsin. They serve the state in private practices and lead the veterinary medical community in high-level positions at organizations such as the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection; the International Crane Foundation; and the Wisconsin Veterinary Medical Association.

Three Reasons to Back Up Your Business Information to the “Cloud” By Steve Newton, WDA Insurance & Service Corp. If you’ve recently considered backing up your business data to the cloud, you’re not alone. Many small businesses have recently made the transition to backing up their critical business information this way. Backing up to the cloud typically involves using special software to encrypt and securely transmit your information to an offsite, secure, temperature controlled and monitored system of servers, with numerous redundancies in place to protect your information. The benefits of this type of back up are numerous, but we’ll focus on three key reasons to do it. #1 One Word – Ransomware. Ransomware (a type of Malware) is software that hackers use to infiltrate your network, lock or encrypt your practice data and demand a ransom from you in order to unlock it. Ransomware can spread multiple ways, but the most common is when someone in our business clicks on a link or attachment from a webpage. There are many different things that can occur. One action that can occur is that an unsafe file could be downloaded to that user’s computer within your practice. #2 External Hard Drive Backups Fail – All the Time. - Many studies have been completed measuring the reliability (or lack thereof ) of external hard drives as backup devices. Depending on the devices used and tested and timeline of the studies involved, failures rates typically fall into 3 percent-15 percent failure rate on average. I don’t know about you, but anything that has a failure rate above 1% that’s backing up my critical business information, makes me very nervous. #3 30 Versions of Your Information – When you back up with a reliable cloud back up partner, processes such as versioning will be in place to enhance the value of your backup. A good rule of thumb is that you want use a provider that backs up, up to 30 versions of your data. What this means is that a provider will store the most recent version of your data, plus up to 29 previous versions of your changed data (if it exists) in the cloud. This enables your cloud backup partner to recover previous versions of your data if your most recent versions are damaged. Having this option greatly improves the likelihood that you’ll be able to recover your data when it’s needed most. For the reasons of reliability and protection stated above, cloud backup is a great option to consider the next time you’re looking to improve your operations. The “Cloud” is a relatively new, trendy and confusing term that marketers and IT professionals use to define different platforms, applications or processes. The confusion exists because the cloud is not a single physical thing. The cloud in its most basic sense is simply a network of servers working together that perform different functions or operations.

Some common examples of functions those servers perform are: • Run Applications or Deliver a Service. (Think Netflix or QuickBooks online) • Securely Store Important Data. (Think DVM Safe to back up your practice data or Apple’s iCloud to store pictures from your phone) Why are so many things going to the cloud? Utilizing the cloud can provide businesses of all sizes many benefits. The cloud allows us to offer and tap into the resources and expertise of other companies like never before. For example: A small business might use a software program hosted in the cloud instead of one that resides on the server infrastructure within their business because of the many potential benefits, such as: 1) Lower up-front investment cost: Typically, when using a solution hosted in the cloud, it helps to reduce the size, footprint, and amount of hardware and infrastructure that is needed to manage and run the software within your business. 2) Easily Share and Collaborate: Because applications or information in the cloud can be accessed 24/7 from anywhere there is an internet connection, the ability to share, collaborate, produce and transmit information is easier than ever before. 2) Better controls and security: By using services from expert providers in the cloud, a small business with benefit from having dedicated IT resources who are constantly monitoring, maintaining and improving the reliability and security of the cloud based application you’re using. Think about it this way: technology companies spend billions of dollars on resources and team members who are specifically dedicated to working to ensure their cloud infrastructure is stable, reliable and secure for all their customers. So why backup to the cloud. First, when you work with a reliable and knowledgeable backup partner to encrypt and back up your information to the cloud, you’ll likely be sending your information to some of the most secure backup locations in the world. Second, by backing up to the cloud, you’re able to improve the reliability of your backup. A common backup process for many small businesses is simply back up to an external hard drive. If this is the only backup an office has, it can be quite risky because of the high failure rate of external storage drives. A network of cloud based servers, which back up and protect some of the most critically important information in the world is significantly more reliable. Lastly, by backing up to the cloud you’re able to remove yourself from the manual aspects of the backup process, enabling you to focus on what you love doing best, helping your patients. l

Let’s Get Together By Kelsey Stokstad, Botham, INK. Your clinic is developing or maybe refreshing its current marketing plan by devising new and effective strategies to reach more of your target audience. You’ve been engaging on social media, built relationships with the media and are actively updating website content. What else might you consider? Building marketing partnerships with other organizations including nonprofit, forprofit, educational or government institutions, can set you apart from other clinics and help connect your brand with an audience you have yet to touch. Partnering with an organization has the potential to expand the exposure of and raise awareness for your clinic. Other benefits can include improved standing and recognition within the community, shared knowledge and strengthening of relationships within the clinic and with a partner organization. But before engaging in a marketing partnership, it’s important to gauge the opportunities and risks for your clinic and the partner organization. A little time spent researching prospective organizations is key to knowing that your respective missions, business approach, audience and reputations align well. For example, an obvious partnership might be collaboration with a local pet rescue or even a local college’s veterinary program. The next step is to set clear goals. What does your clinic want to get out of this partnership, other than to reach an untapped audience? Maybe it’s a deeper connection with your community or organizing fun events for your customers. Identifying goals in advance will help clearly communicate your needs to the organization with

which you plan to partner and determine best ways to move forward together. Consider too, the ways that the partnership will benefit the other organization. For example, proposing cross promotions within your respective marketing platforms is a great way to showcase the benefits they will reap from your partnership. This provides access for each to the other’s customer base and audience without infringing on customer privacy or compromising trust. Strategic partnerships take time to develop. To see your goals achieved, remember that patience and consistency are key. A partnership marketing plan that includes both party’s goals and tasks with associated deadlines can be a helpful guide in tracking growth and successes. Developing a plan will also ensure that both parties are held accountable for their responsibilities within the marketing partnership. Clearly communicate expectations and generate a calendar for routine check-ins and a post-collaboration recap for events. This helps the partnership remain focused on long-term goals and avoids miscommunication. A marketing partnership can be intimidating at first, but the right partnership can lead to the growth and success of your clinic, both economically and socially. WVMA Member Spotlight – Dr. Calico Schmidt Veterinary Medical School: University of care for animals--and it has been wonderful to discover a love for the people who love and care for animals, too! (I also remember an Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine interesting escapade obtaining a blood sample from an ostrich!) Graduation Year: 1992 Background: I have worked as a small animal primary care veterinarian since graduation, beginning at New Glarus Veterinary Clinic. After spending ten years at Westside Family Pet Clinic in Dr. Calico Madison, I joined the Primary Care Service Schmidt at UW Veterinary Care in 2007. In the past year, I have transitioned to more of a teaching role and love working with our students at the University of Wisconsin’s School of Veterinary Medicine. Value of WVMA membership: Since my graduation, I have been grateful for the continuing education opportunities offered by the WVMA: the annual Convention, winter retreats, chances to meet colleagues and network. I also appreciate the voice that we, as veterinarians, have through the WVMA. Most memorable part of her veterinary career: I feel blessed to have learned much and gained friendships among the colleagues, clients and students with whom I have worked. I think we all enter the field of veterinary medicine because, of course, we love and
Advice for current veterinary students: Hold tight to the enthusiasm and energy you bring to the veterinary profession, and remember the joy and accomplishment you felt after successfully completing your first year of veterinary school, or tying the final suture knot on your first surgery. Show your patients and clients all of your kindness and caring. Veterinary medicine outreach: A colleague and I recently started a group called “Finding Meaning in Veterinary Medicine.” This is an informal group of veterinarians that meets roughly once per month to discuss a topic and support one another in our “calling” as veterinarians. Several of the veterinarians in our group have also helped serve as instructors in a similar class for veterinary students called “The Healer’s Art.” I love working with students, and know many colleagues have found similar joy in mentoring pre-veterinary and veterinary students. Anything else you would like to mention? My hope for all fellow WVMA members and students is an ongoing love of learning and appreciation for this rather amazing field of veterinary medicine. We have the ability to help animals and people, and foster interests in a variety of “branches” of this broad and diverse field. l

To recap the issue: • Private rendering companies are no longer accepting equine that were chemically euthanized • The laws in Wisconsin have not changed • See Dr. Yvonne Bellay’s article titled Difficult Choices and Limited Options, originally published in April newsletter and sent via email for additional information Latest updates: • We are aware of several rendering companies no longer taking any equine, regardless of how euthanized. • The article talks about local ordinances (burial), this link will connect you to the local ordinances in your area: http:// wilawlibrary.gov/topics/ordinances.php

Note, you are going to need to talk with the landfill personnel in advance of delivering an animal. Some want to have trenches ready, some won’t be able to help unload animals, etc. That is something that will need to be talked through. • There is a facility in Wisconsin that can cremate equine, Midwest Cremation Service: https://mcsofwi.com/equine-cremation/. In talking with Robert Blosser, they recently added a group cremation option for equine, due to rendering issue (in addition to the individual option). They provide transportation and services for Wisconsin, Minnesota, Northern Illinois, Iowa and the UP of Michigan. • The WVMA has reached out to AVMA and AAEP, as this is not only a Wisconsin issue. The three groups are communicating and determining the next steps forward. Additional information will be share as it becomes available. l
