I WAS RECENTLY INTERVIEWED FOR AN ARTICLE – FUNNY, HUH! THE INTERVIEWER BEING INTERVIEWED! IN THAT INTERVIEW I WAS ASKED ABOUT WHAT PASSIONS I HAD OUTSIDE MY FAMILY AND REAL PRODUCERS. I ANSWERED IT THIS WAY:

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been insatiably curious about human potential. I wanted to know, what exactly is it that makes people genuinely happy, successful and creatively fulfilled? Why do some people struggle while others find a way to thrive, often despite the most challenging circumstances? I love seeing people’s lives transform. I know that’s why I love peoples’ stories and why I love to document them. I love to watch as people create something out of noth-

ing in their personal and career life. And I have always had an infinity for encouraging others to make radical life changes and transformative shifts into their inner greatness. Seems like I’ve had those types of relationships since before I was old enough to legally order a glass of Pinot Noir. I have always been fascinated by the human potential. I love to help someone replace their fears and frustrations with an awaking of their dreams or forgotten goals they had put on a

I share this mostly to remind all of you Realtors® that everyone one of you has great power to transform your lives and do great things. You chose a path of business ownership. The best thing about that is that “you control your destiny.” The hardest part of that is “you control your destiny.”

shelf. I believe you must bring your whole self to the table if you want to thrive in today’s world. Everyone has a unique set of gifts, an inimitable personality, a sense of humor and most importantly, a heart that can lead them. I believe that whether you run your own business or work for a company in a role you love, a creative and entrepreneurial approach is critical to fully blossom in the modern world and to experience the happiness and fulfillment you deserve. Most importantly, I believe that no matter what your dreams or obstacles, you have the power to change your life and, by doing so, you’ll change the world.

WHY REAL ESTATE? I started flipping homes in 1997 with a group of people and by 2001, I had fallen in love with real estate. TELL US ABOUT YOUR REAL ESTATE JOURNEY: My real estate started in the Portland Metropolitan area in 2002 with Windermere in West Linn. But the journey really began when I moved back to my hometown of Independence over 10 years ago where I reconnected with my now-husband, Aaron Young. Aaron and I first met in kindergarten and last saw each other in high school. With his background in construction and commercial real estate and mine in residential we were destined to open our own real estate and development company. Our goal is to give back to our community in every way possible. WHO ARE YOUR FAMILY MEMBERS? I have two children; Ashley 32 and Ryan 23. I have three grandkids; Tyler Jr. 12, Sophia 8 and Brook 7 years old DO YOU HAVE PETS? WHAT KIND OF PETS? NAMES AND AGES? We have four dogs; Rocky, Lola, Zeus, and June-bug. They are Black Lab/Pitbull mix. WHAT HAS MADE YOU THE PERSON YOU ARE TODAY? First of all, I wouldn’t be the person I am today if it wasn’t for my husband. He inspires me to be my best. to learn new things, think outside the box and creatively. My children and grandkids teach me to stay light-hearted, playful and patient.

I also love our winter trips snowmobiling in Wyoming and Montana. WHAT KIND OF ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE A YOUNG AGENT? Don’t get lost in today’s digital world and forget customer service. We are in the business of serving our clients – It is a balance of knowledge, honesty, ethics, empathy, passion and above all providing value and integrity. ARE YOU INVOLVED IN THE COMMUNITY? HOW? I served on the board of the Independence Downtown Associations. Our goal is to bring more businesses and housing to the downtown area. DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE REAL ESTATE STORY, OR FAVORITE CLIENT? I met these clients from Idaho and they had a very specific home in mind. This was back in 2006 when the market was flooded with homes. For a year straight we looked at over 100 homes until one day we found that perfect home. They couldn’t believe that had I stuck with them that long. This business is about “our” clients and about helping them find their “dream” home. Today, they couldn’t be happier in their home...that is why I love what I do! 12 • March 2020

CALIFORNIAN’S ARE STILL PACKING THEIR BAGS! PUBLISHED: NOVEMBER 2019 In 2018, nearly 700,000 people decided to pack their bags and leave the California life behind. By contrast, there were only 501,000 people who decided to follow the California dream and set up camp in the state. With 691,000 people leaving the Golden State for another state, California was in the negative as far as net population change. The exodus from California also led among other states. Only the numbers for Texas, Florida, and New York came close. Texas lost 462,000; New York lost 458,000; and Florida lost 470,000. 14 • March 2020

HUMBLE AND A STRAIGHT SHOOTER. LINDA MATTERN CONTINUOUSLY PUSHES HERSELF TO LEARN AND GROW IN THIS FAST-PACED MARKET. Linda was born in The Woodlands, Texas and moved to Willamina, Oregon, at the age of 7 to be near her family. Linda discovered a love for sports at an early age and played volleyball and softball year-round while in high school. Juggling her academic load and commitments to her team as well as a part-time job taught Linda a strong work ethic and time management skills. It’s not uncommon for Linda to work 6-7 days a week and long hours each day as she truly goes the extra mile to negotiate and advocate on behalf of her clients. After high school, Linda was awarded a full academic scholarship to Chemeketa Community College and was a member of the softball team. It was during this time that Linda began a career with Costco Wholesale. Linda didn’t know it at the time, but Costco was a life-changing opportunity for her. Linda earned several promotions over her 9-year career with Costco and learned valuable leadership and communication skills as a full-time supervisor in several departments. She draws on those same skills and experiences to bring challenging and sometimes contentious real estate transactions together to a successful outcome for her clients. In 2017, Linda decided to start doing for herself, and took the leap into real-estating! When asked how her first year was financially she replied “Honestly my first year was awful! Yeah, it was really rough... but I was also shifting from an hourly wage job.” At first she thought she could work her “regular” job during the day and give her business focus in the evenings, but she soon found out her initial idea

16 • March 2020

wasn’t realistic, and that you only get back what you give when it comes to just about anything. Although she was giving 110%, it was dispersed between too many things… So after a hard lesson learned Linda decided to jump in with both feet and give her business the focus it deserved. In her first year she did one transaction. Her second year she did 12 transactions with an 85% buyer to 15% seller average. Now moving on to her third year, her goal is to at least double that. It can only go up from here! Linda’s indomitable spirit and inquisitive nature got her feet in the door. She began her REALTOR® career in November 2017. Linda works with brokerages that had great support and amazing training. She celebrated her wins and learned from her mistakes. Linda has always been known in her brokerage as a straight shooter. It was that straight shooter mentality, being coach-able and her winning attitude that got the attention of the heads of BrightHome Real Estate Group in 2018 when she was recruited. Linda says that “BrightHome has an energy different than any other brokerage. They have the whole family feel.” Linda prefers that tight-knit family environment. Her family may be small but they’re close and spend as much time together as they can. She has a 9-year-old son Dominic who is the light of her life, and has been happily married to her husband, Johnathan, since November 1, 2017. Johnathon is a corrections officer for OSP, and is her rock and support. Dominic, Johnathon, and Linda love going on little day trips to Silvercreek falls and local parks. Because of their busy schedules it’s hard to get in good family bonding time. So, they make sure to silence their phones and put them down at 7pm every night so they can focus on their time together. When asked what she’s doing different this year and why her numbers have jumped, Linda replied: “Lead generating, cold calling, not everybody’s favorite thing in the world to do, it’s definitely not my favorite thing, but you kinda just get over that. And after you do it so long you have the confidence coming through on your conversations where you can set up appointments and demonstrate your knowledge and percentage which is helpful.” Linda keeps herself busy and does whatever it takes to get the job done. She also says having an “accountability partner” has helped her change from year one to now, and has been a huge impact in her success! “We meet weekly. We talk about our goals. We talk about where we want our business to go. Where we see ourselves in five, ten years. And we’ve really been trying to focus on that wildly important goal, and where we want to be and what that looks like.” When you have a goal you can track your success and physically see the steps taken to reach it! Linda is definitely on her way! Linda has also been promoted within BrightHome Real Estate to be their “success manager,” where she is a supportive role for the newer team members/ licensees. Her main goal in this role is to ensure that newer agents do not experience the same first or even second year she did! Linda works hand in hand with these agents and teaches them how to build successful relationships and a booming business. www.realproducersmag.com • 17

DAV I D GIGLIO Skyline Video Productions David Giglio and his wife Olivia are right where they are meant to be. Starting a family, making a living doing their passion, and helping businesses and realtors to grow!

18 • March 2020

Growing up in Stayton, David has known what he wanted to do since he was a young child creating videos with his friends. David says, "Creating videos has always been a big part of my life. I'm very passionate about it." After high school, he attended Corban University where he got a degree in Political Science and studied Media Arts. "I met my wife as a freshman. She was also studying Media arts," he added. In 2015, he founded the schools film club they called Cineclub. As you can guess, they created and directed short films which he loved.

During the summer, he worked for the Oregon Department of Forestry where he made training videos for private foresters. Two and half years ago he started working for Skyline Video Productions and within a year, both him and his wife became part owners of the company. They currently have 7 employees. Jacob Klindtworth - CEO, Jonathon Reid - COO, David is Director of Productions, and Olivia is the Creative Director. The business was started in order to help people get connected in the home service market and construction industries.

Family is very important to all of them. It's another big part of their business. David and Olivia welcomed a new addition to their family a few months ago, precious Nova. Jacob and his wife have six kids. Since David's been there, they've created over 100 videos, worked with over 70 clients / businesses including mortgage companies, construction, real estate agents, non-profits, individuals, and couples. David says, "We really focus on personal branding. People buy from people so it's important to focus on that

to work with that realtor or business. When someone gets to know who you are, they are more likely to work with you."

Every video they make is unique because every person's story is different. They want to keep everything fresh and one of a kind. Other video companies may find something they like or follow a certain program, and then all the videos turn out similar to each other. "We do an interview style in our videos, but we also incorporate their personal life. This can include photos of their family, videos of them with their family, or videos of them working with clients. We want people to stop and look and give them a reason to want

David would like to advise realtors, that video isn't just about the real estate listing. Listing videos are a one time thing, so you want more than just that. Realtors need to brand themselves and tell their story. David says, "We can create a series of videos that tells their story. These videos last longer and can be used over again. Professional listing videos are important, but they only last as long as the listing itself. It's far more important to sell yourself." Skyline Video Productions loves to educate their clients

and help their businesses. Sitting down in a meeting is a great way to brainstorm different marketing ideas where they can make suggestions that will help them to grow and expand their reach and business. Other than video production, they also offer Web Design services. They are not your typical video production company. They go beyond video delivery to marketing integration, helping realtors know how and where to best se the video. So if you are looking for a unique way to grow your businesses, set up a time to meet with them and see how they can help you. Also make sure to check out some of their videos on their website.

While the Trevor Tagle Band played, guests sampled a fantastic variety of wines and spirits. Nichole Whitlow and Jason Wenger of Divine Distillers crafted three of their specialty drink samples that included a watermelon brandy mixed with cucumber lime and mint with a little carbonation. Guests could also sample a Coquito which is a dairy-based cocktail mixed with spicy rum. 24 • March 2020

Kylie Schaefer from Eola Hills visited with Mat Genuser of Keller Williams Capital City and photographer Pamela Hagedoorn sampled Brooks Wine poured by Jaclyn Easton. Hagedoorn is responsible for some of the excellent photography in the magazine. David Giglio of Skyline Video productions was capturing every angle of the event on video.

Jodie Vaughn, a Salem local and the property director of The Reed, helped arrange the space. Attendees enjoyed learning that the ballroom once featured performances from historical figures as Mark Twain, Susan B. Anthony, Abigail Scott Duniway and Presidents Rutherford B. Hayes and Benjamin Harrison.

We bought a new house that had some drainage issues and could not have found someone better to work with, David and his crew were extremely professional and kind throughout the whole process. They were very straight forward with budget and when encountering any issues they were very clear on any changes. Would highly recommend if you have any drainage type issues. They will work with you to find a solution that suits your budget.

MVAR Kids CHRISTMAS RE-CAP

This is a program that provides educational support that helps students without a home, or in transition to achieve success in academics. Such support may include transportation, school supplies, access to academic support, etc. We have been told by the school district that for those students who attend our Children's Christmas Party it seems to positively impact their attitudes for the remainder of the school year.

This year the MVAR Community Foundation (formerly SAR Community Fund) Board of Directors completed our 30th Annual Children's Christmas Party with the help of many REALTOR® and Affiliate Members. We hosted 156 children who are members of the STEP Program in the Salem-Keizer School District where gifts, festive activities, and lunch is provided. 28 • March 2020
