If you don’t know who Coach K is, he is the winning-est coach in NCAA basketball history. In 2015 the Duke coaching staff brought in a basketball to a team meeting. On this ball they asked each player to write down the names of the individuals who had made it possible for them to reach this point in their career; not 100 names, just the key ones. It’s interesting to note that most people named somewhere between three and eight individuals. Each player on the team and all the coaching staff participated. The ball went everywhere with them during the Tournament, but would not be part of the public story; not on Facebook, no tweets, no interviews to include the ball — just an internal appreciation of that ball and what it represented to each member of the team. Over the next several weeks the ball went everywhere; into dorm and hotel rooms, to team meals, to practice and in the locker room. When the championship was over and Duke was once again crowned National Champions, the team sent a replica ball and a letter to everyone whose name was on the list. The letter, written and signed by the team captain simply said, “Thanks. You were with us every step of the way.” Not only did this gesture overwhelm those who received it, but it also reminded the members of the team just how many people had sacrificed and contributed to helping them — and thus this team — achieve this goal. What an incredible lesson in gratitude for this group of young men! As you celebrate the wins, achievements, successes and accolades in your real estate career; whose name should be written on your “gratitude ball,” who sacrificed for you, cheered you on, believed in you when you didn’t believe in yourself, encouraged you, taught you, mentored you, and guided you through tough transactions? We don’t reach success alone. My encouragement

to you is to create your own version of a gratitude ball, and then be sure to write those people a personal note, letting them know how grateful you are for them. Lastly, some food for thought, when one of us wins, we all win. When one of your fellow REALTORS® does well and succeed, that means our whole profession wins. Yep! Especially with the industry disruptors, bonding together and keeping our market strong is important stuff! Don’t get me wrong, I’m a fierce competitor, and no game of Taboo is “just a game of taboo”, just ask my children. However, I am a firm believer that a rising tide lifts all boats. If we want to show the consumer the true value of a REALTOR®, we need to do that by lifting each other up, not by bashing on our competitors. We should want to see each other succeed. James Keller said, “a candle loses nothing by lighting another candle.” Let’s help each other, be kind to each other and cheer each other on. Next time you have a new agent who does not know what they’re doing, on the other side of the transaction, let’s stop to help them rather than make them feel inferior simply because they have less practice than we do. Let’s be the good in the industry and raise the bar. Start with gratitude, share the gratitude, and help cheer each other on and just be kind. It’s about the people. Connect with people, building relationships, and helping fulfill their dreams.

cover story Photos by Pamela Hagedoorn, SilverDream Photography

Brian and April McVay are the kindest couple you’ll ever come across. The objective should always be to make every deal a “Win Win” for both sides. They’re people who love people. After being in the real estate business for over 20 years, they have the skills and know-how to get the job done. Not only do they get the job done, but they love doing it! “It’s about the people. Connect with people, building relationships, and helping fulfill their dreams.”

When Brian and April first showed interest in getting into real estate they had already seen the success it brought their family. Brian’s uncle Dave Taylor in Albany, was a broker and April’s uncle, Jim Reimann in Keizer, was a real estate developer. They saw the freedom it brought and how they would be able to connect with their customers making lasting impressions and helping them. Both of them wanted to jump on board! However, shortly after they started their real estate journey April was promoted to southern Oregon sales manager for the magazine she worked for. Brian decided to continue forward and put his all into getting his license. In 1998, Brian was licensed, but after 13 years of retail, he was unsure of the first steps he needed to take. Deciding to work with Coldwell Banker Moun-

tain West, he felt right at home immediately with their family friends and brokers Connie Hinsdale and John Copeland. Brian didn’t know it yet but he was about to start his new career off with a bang! Wanting to celebrate with family, he headed over to Uncle Jim’s to tell him the good news. Congratulating him, Jim asked jokingly if he had any listings yet and Brian laughed. He had only been in the business an hour. Apparently Jim wasn’t joking because he handed Brian a listing and said, “Well, now you do.” After thanking Jim and taking his new listing back to his broker, he asked, “What now?”

These two work hard to play hard! When they’re not in town working their tails off, Brian and April enjoy going out to their property at Triangle Lake. They love to take their now 15 year old daughter Micah, adorable Shih Tzu Bella, friends, and family out for fun on the dunes nearby in their Polaris Side by Side or for a ride on the lake in their old school ski boat! Spending time with family and friends is what it’s all about for this social pair. Every year for Christmas they invite 500 of their closest friends and family over to celebrate the season in style. They also love working in the community and try to donate both time and money to help make a difference. “We love people!” said April. “We have a great support system.” Together, I think this couple could conquer the world. They have an office right on River Road in Keizer if you ever feel the need to ask them how they do it!

Ten years later, the magazine April was working for stopped distribution. Looking at it as a positive instead of a negative, she thought it would be a perfect time to join her husband! Fast forward another 10 years. Brian and April are a dream team, working, and living, and loving their lives together. To keep things fresh and competitive, Brian and April recently made the switch to start working with HomeSmart Realty Group. “It was to hit the reset button,” said April. After being in the business for this long, sometimes you just gotta try for something new. “Homesmart is ahead of the curve where technology is concerned.” Said Brian. They want to give their customers every opportunity whether it be in person, over the phone, or online.

JESSICA MCCARTT trendsetter

Photos by Pamela Hagedoorn, SilverDream Photography

Why Real Estate? I have been in Real Estate for going on three years, since July 2017. I chose real estate because I wanted to stay within a customer service industry and I was tired of missing out on the kids’ games, events and family outings because as a restaurant server you do not get/want the weekends off. They are the most lucrative. Tell us about your Journey: My real estate journey was a whirlwind. I had thought about real estate four to five years before I made the decision. I put it on the back burner and went on with my job at Best Little Roadhouse until I ran into a regular customer (Mat Genuser) who was always so friendly and sweet and I found out he was in the real estate world. I told him I wanted to get involved and after we talked I immediately went through my schooling and within a month maybe a couple days more I had finished school, taken the tests and passed right away (thankfully!) and signed with Keller Williams which I have always known was the right home for me. Since then, I have been rookie of the year (2018), Top solo agent in units and volume (2019) and continue to work hard and absolutely love my job. It has been a complete life changer for myself and my family. 16 • May 2020

You have a beautiful family! Tell us about them: My family includes my husband Cullen (CJ) Farrell, 35, and myself, 35. My two bonuses are kids Rylee, 11, and Kaden, 9. I seriously hit the jackpot with these two. They are both so sweet, wonderful and silly kids who I am so privileged to help raise. We have an incredible bond with a foundation that was built naturally over time since they were 3 and 5. Our relationship was never forced and I think that is a big reason why we are so close as a family. I have loved being a part of all of their events, sports and growth over the years. I wish time would slow down! I look forward to watching them continue to grow into the amazing people I know they will be. CJ and I have been together for over five years and were married last July. We went to some of middle school and all of high school together. I joke that its cliché he was a football player and I was a cheerleader, lol. He is my rock and support system. He is great at making sure I have the downtime that I need for myself once in a while. I can be “go-go-go” and he often slows me down and makes sure I don’t get burned out. He has never wavered in his faith in my (sometimes impulsive) decisions and is there to back me up 100%. I couldn’t ask for anything more in a husband/ father of my kids. Willamette Valley Real Producers • 17

Community Involvement? I am involved with our community by volunteering in my daughter’s class every week at school, participating in Keller Williams Red Day (which is where we shut down offices everywhere for a day in May) and spend the day giving back to our local community. I also have been involved in some Family Building blocks events, which I think is an absolutely wonderful cause. Lately, in light of the recent virus issues, I have donated over 100 pieces of my Lularoe clothing (from when I was a consultant years ago) to a women’s shelter and thanks to Amber Toney, a lender I work with, I am helping provide meals for families that lost their jobs due to this unexpected change in our economy. I am always looking for more ways to help and feel it is vital to get involved in helping our community thrive.

What “creatures” do you have in your family? We absolutely LOVE animals. We have two dogs, Emma (Our black lab mix 5 years old), Mia (Our Chihuahua/Terrier mix 10 years old) and four cats. We are also HUGE Harry Potter fans so all of our cats have HP names. We have Lily, Severus, Weasley and Luna. Our house is a zoo at times but we wouldn’t have it any other way. Before we bought our home in 2018, we lived on CJ’s family’s farm with his mom Molly. We had horses, llamas, goats and even chickens at one point. It was a blessing to be there and was actually where we got married. It’s a place where we will cherish some of our most important/loving memories and where we officially became a family forever. What has contributed to who you are today? To shorten what could be a 10-page essay, I have the most amazing dad, Sam. He and my grandma Ernestine raised us. They made sure my brother and myself had a loving family life when we were young until we were out on our own. My dad is the smartest, most kind and has the best sense of humor of anyone I know. When my brother, my dad and myself get together, it’s all jokes, movie quotes and flashbacks. He really taught me about life, family, loving unconditionally and being a good person and treating everyone with respect. I am so incredibly blessed to have had the most supportive dad who told me I can do anything I put my mind to as long as I don’t mind breaking a sweat and putting in the hard work. He said, “Above all else, put your whole heart into it.” I still call and text him when I have an issue or a hard day, and he talks me through it. My mom is so funny, silly and makes me laugh constantly. She shows me all the time, still, that it’s ok to laugh at yourself. I have been very blessed with family. Favorite things to do: We love hiking, the beach, going to the river/lake, golfing, (any sport really), dancing, singing, working out, running (Or I should say jogging...I’m not a sprinter), and disc golf. If it’s outside, you name it we pretty much love it! We are very blessed to live in a place where we have the mountains and beaches so close. We also LOVE the Blazers, so we go to the games as often as we can. I’ve been a fan since I was very young. I always watched them and the Seahawks with my dad. PB crackers and a Coca-Cola was our routine!

18 • May 2020

Do you have a favorite Real Estate Story? One of my favorite stories during my career...My first real estate transaction was a wonderful family that was moving up to Salem from out of town. We had to go through so much to get them into their home. Excitement, heartbreak, compromise and finally joy! It was a great learning experience and I laughed hard when my client said, “I wouldn’t have known we were your first clients and you didn’t tell us, that was ballsy!” My family and I ended up having to go over after close and help them get into their POD. It was sitting on a downward slope on their driveway and the stuff inside was lodged up against the door. We helped get it open. It was bittersweet when they called me to list that house and find them their next home. Truly being a family’s guide and someone they can count on as their REALTOR® forever is the kind of REALTOR® I love being. “Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.” –Harry Potter “Change your thinking, change the world.”

What advice would you give a new agent? I would tell a new agent to embrace what market we are in. None have to be bad. Learn absolutely everything you can, as often as you can. There is not a transaction that goes by that I don’t learn something new. Good or bad. Surround yourself with hardworking, supportive, and kind people. Be competitive(I know I am) and push yourself, challenge your fellow agents, yet you don’t have to be over the top about it. Be proud of each other and celebrate one another’s wins. A little competition is healthy! Picking the right brokerage for yourself is very important. You will need training, a great community of people and tough skin at times to make it in this business.

REYNOLDS HOME FIRE STOVE

Jeff Reynolds was raised to work hard for what you want. “I learned a great work ethic from my parents. I believe if you work hard for everything, you will be rewarded for your effort,” he says. He grew up not too far from Salem in Independence Oregon. Today, Jeff and his wife Cheryl have two children, a daughter who is 31, and a son who is 33, along with 10 grandchildren. When asked if the grandkids where spoiled, he responded, “We try not to spoil them too much. We teach them you have to work hard for what you want. I do however love to take them fishing.”

The fireplace can be a deciding factor for the buyer and a good presentation will help with that

They love the outdoors. Each year they take a trip to Canada and spend a week fishing in the ocean. He also likes to archery hunt with his son. They make a couple trips a year to hunt for elk. They go to a remote location and live off the land for about three to five days at a time. “It’s not about the kill, it’s the experience and the harvesting. We have a huge respect for nature and animals.” They also try to have a family dinner every Wednesday night. Jeff feels it’s important to stay active in the community and to give back. Locally he’s active in Home Builder Association, Salem Chamber of Commerce, Liberty House, Rotary, Marion Polk Food Share, Oregon Hearth Patio BBQ Association, and Energy Trust of Oregon. Nationally he’s involved with National Fireplace Institute and National Hearth Patio, and BBQ Association. Jeff joined the team at Home Fire Stove in June 1995. He was previously working at a lumber mill back when the federal government started shutting down most of the mills in Oregon due to the protection of the endangered spotted owl. Prior to that, he worked with his father who owned a drywall business. “I knew the trade, but didn’t really enjoy it.” When the mills were shut down, he was given a grant that allowed him to go to college where he got a degree in human services as a drug and alcohol counselor. If a REALTOR® is concerned about the compliance of an existing fireplace, they can send a photo and provide docs with the information and they will be able to tell them if it’s certified or not. A lot of REALTORS® recommend them because of that service. Since the 1800s when there was one in every room, a fireplace will make a home feel warm and inviting. When it’s positioned appropriately, it will create the perfect “hotspot” in the home and be part of the most intimate memories. If you’d like more information, reach out to them. They would be happy to help in every way they can. Jeff Reynolds Home Fire Stove jreynolds@homefirestove.com www.homefirestove.com

ating, he received an offer to work for them; however, personal circumstances kept him from accepting the position at the time. That’s when the supervisor recommended he reach out to Tim Nissen, owner of Home Fire Stove. For 22 years, Jeff worked for them filling every position except for accounting. “I took pride in everything I did, treating it like it was my own business.”

In 2014, Tim approached him wanting to retire and offered to sell the business to him. After deliberation, an agreement was made and he began two years of training and job shadowing. In June 2016, the transaction was complete and he was the new owner of Home Fire Stove. Tim did a great job of building the company so they kept everything the same. He adds, “It’s like a fairy tale. I worked hard for 22 years then bought the company. Even though I’m the owner, I still feel like one of the guys. When a customer calls, I still want to run out and help them resolve an issue but I have to remember that’s what my employees are for. Whatever my employees or customers are dealing with, I’m able to help them because I’ve been through it.” Cheryl and his daughter also work for the company. Home Fire Stove opened in 1979 in response to the rapid inflation in energy costs. They have grown to be the largest volume hearth products retailer in Oregon, and one of the largest in the nation. They service a 60-mile area around Salem. They travel to other areas; however, they respect dealers in other territories. decision. There are three aspects to a home that’s important; social, practical/efficient, and emotional (a great place to take photos of their family). If a fireplace fits all three, sales will come easier. If the fireplace doesn’t meet those, they want REALTORS® to know how they can help them.
