FIRST WEEK OF SCHOOL
The 2024-25 school year is underway! Our campus is once again filled with the friendly hustle-and-bustle we all know so well. From catching up with old friends to making new ones, our students, faculty, and staff are looking forward to an amazing year ahead!
Throughout the year, we will continue to remind our students, parents, and guardians of our parking protocols and traffic mitigation efforts. Occasionally, a few individuals may need additional reminders. If you notice anyone not following the appropriate protocols, please do not hesitate to contact our Security Team. They will follow up in a timely manner with any individuals requiring another reminder.

SERVICE LEARNING IN THE FALL
Our Commitment to the Mar Vista Community!
We look forward to the 24-25 school year and to our students’ participation in many different service learning activities and projects we have planned. We will continue strengthening our existing partnerships and forming new ones in the community.
Summer Student Service Learning
Each Friday over the Summer, students took part in a service learning project in partnership with People Assisting the Homeless (PATH). Students heard from PATH staff more about the work that they do to help support the homeless population in Los Angeles, and after, the students took part in hands-on work making blankets and hygiene kits that will be handed out by outreach teams across the city. The goal is not only to give back to the community, but to instill the idea of service learning in our new community members.
10th-Grade Service and Leadership Retreat
For the second year in a row, Windward School will partner with the Friends of the LA River (FOLAR) to provide habitat restoration at the Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve. Students will hear from the FOLAR volunteer staff about how their work will help restore and revive the area. Students will also collect trash and invasive plants that affect the LA River’s ecosystem, which local wildlife communities call home.
Upcoming Service Events Fall 2024
• 9th and 10th Grade Service Retreats
• PATH Fall Service Project
• Beautification Days
• Allies for Every Child Fall Baskets and Festival

2024-25 EXPANDED TRAFFIC MITIGATION EFFORTS
The School continues its strong commitment to reduce our traffic impact on the Mar Vista community. The School is again offering a robust bus program for the 2024-25 school year, with four distinct bus routes throughout the greater Los Angeles area. We have also increased our passenger requirements for both parent and student-driven carpools to lessen the amount of cars to and from the School.
Moreover, after much success last year, the School continues its internally led shuttle stop to allow for even more transportation options for our community. The shuttle stop is conveniently located in an off-site business parking lot and is available for both morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up. The Shuttle helps reduce the number of cars entering and exiting the School.
Another carryover from last year is our “airport style pick-up,” which aids in preventing vehicle back-ups onto the local streets during afternoon pick-up. Vehicles entering campus follow a loading zone-style pick-up (no curbside parking). The results have been significant, mitigating back-ups and waiting times for our students.
INNOVATION & ARTS CENTER
We are pleased to share that the project is on schedule to be completed by April 2025.
As you have likely noticed, construction is progressing rapidly on the Innovation & Arts Center. The exterior block walls are completed and the remaining steel infrastructure is currently being installed. The hope is that the majority of this higher volume work will be completed in early September.
Significant milestone efforts planned for the Fall include -
• Utilities from Sawtelle and Westminster will begin in September
• Roofing and building dry-in will be completed by November
• Low-impact storm drain dry well will be installed by September
• Removal of temporary shoring will be completed in September
• DWP utility vaults will be installed by October
• Installation of the interior finishes will start in September and continue through December
As the new school year begins, the contractor, Turner Construction, remains committed to supporting our local community by:
• Timing truck arrivals and departures during the quieter hours, minimizing the impact on our traffic on the surrounding streets
• Monitoring the air quality throughout the day to ensure it is safe for all
• Managing noise (when possible) to minimize the noise experienced by the local apartment community
• Staging of materials and personnel all on campus
• Utilizing designated offsite parking for the contractor and their subcontractors. Windward’s Security Team will monitor parking, ensuring that individuals only park in approved areas.
• Traffic Control flaggers and spotters
• Maintaining good housekeeping (street sweeping and dust control) outside the fencing
• Robust “Active Caring Program” (which rewards exceptional efforts by the Turner team and subs) - Building Life Award, Water Bottle Recycling Program, Respectful & Inclusive Workshop Training, and Safety Incentive Program
If you have any questions regarding the project, please contact Dawn Barrett or Lindsay Gonzales.
