WINDWARD SCHOOL

Windward School opens at 3118 Wilshire Blvd. with an enrollment of 68 students. At the first annual meeting of the Board of Trustees on September 7, 1971, three faculty members are elected to serve as officers of the School:

On September 5, 1972, Allen Weiss was elected Vice President.

Continuing to grow and needing additional space for new programs, Windward moves to its present site, a 9.5 acre, multi-building campus at 11350 Palms Blvd. in Los Angeles.

1976

1980-1982 • At the Board of Trustees meeting on October 11, 1981 the Board agrees to purchase the building at 11350 Palms Boulevard in Mar Vista from the Boy Scouts.

The School moves to its second campus, a converted medical building, at 1414 21st St. Allen Weiss, Director 1976-77

• At the April 5, 1982 meeting of the Board of Trustees, Avram Salkin is authorized to create a real estate syndication model to raise the funds to remodel the new campus.

• Jerry Sherman is authorized to work with Tim Corcoran to negotiate with the City of Santa Monica for the seven acres which border the new school site to the south, on the other side of the wash.

1984 The Small Bridge is constructed.

1987 Windward's First School Strategic Plan is completed, led by Board trustees Rolfe Windward and Claude Hill. Jim Leonard serves as Chair of the Board of Trustees from 1987-1992 and leads the efforts to construct Windward's first gymanasium. Jim Leonard, Board Chair 1987-92


• Tom Hunter serves as Chair of the Board of Trustees during the 1996-2001 Academic Years.

• In 1992, the Board of Trustees approves the 1992-96 Strategic Plan.

• 7,111 square foot Pavilion is the School’s central dining location on campus.

• During this time the Board of Trustees leads the first phase of the Campaign for Windward that raises money to build the Ahmanson Classroom Building and the Leichtman-Levine Bridge.

• An addition to the Lewis Jackson Memorial Sports Center is built.

Irene Kleinberg Theater, 600, and 700 buildings are constructed. The Irene Kleinberg Theater debuts with “The Long Christmas Dinner” and “Little Shop of Horrors.”

The first gymnasium is built on campus.

• 9,005 square foot Ahmanson Building features 10 classrooms.

• In 1996 the Board of Trustees approves the 1996-2001 Strategic Plan.

• During these years, the Board of Trustees raises money in a comprehensive annual fund and Capital Campaign to build the the Irene Kleinberg Theater, the Jim Leonard Science Labs, and Library and Classrooms Cluster Building.

1990

• Leichtman-Levine Bridge opens.

1998 Windward embarks on its first Capital Campaign co-chaired by Warren Littlefeild, Mary Estrin, and Tom Hunter.

2001-2005 • Chris Foley serves as Chair the Board of Trustees during the 2001-2005 Academic Years. • In 2001, the Board of Trustees approves the School’s 2001-2005 Strategic Plan. The Board of Trustees lead the second phase of the Campaign that raises money for Windward to build the Tom Hunter Board Room, grade and re-surface Windward’s Chris Foley Athletic Fields and built our visual arts studios and dining pavilion. 2002 Windward successfully completes a six million dollar Campaign, which allows the school to add significant new facilities. Campaign co-chairs: Jeff Mirkin and Jim Lovelace


The Board of Trustees sets a Campaign goal of 18 million dollars and approves construction of the Science and Math Center and the Center for Teaching and Learning. Scott Jacks, Board Chair 2005-10

2007 Windward's Second Campaign pledges exceeds eight million dollars. This campaign is chaired by Claudia Bright, David Lippman, Pauletta Washington and Nancy Grant.

2009

The Athletic Field undergoes a massive upgrade, led by co-chairs Tony Rubin, Bryan Ezralow, and Perrie Weiner, which includes new stadium seating, batting cage, sport-specific scoreboards, new dugouts, and new home shades.

2010-2016 Elliot Gordon ’74, Board Chair 2010-16 Chair of the 2010-16 Strategic Planning Committee. Elliot graduated from Windward in 1974, and his son Daniel, graduated in 2011.

• The 11,647 square foot Lewis Jackson Memorial Sports Center undergoes an extensive remodel which includes central heating and air, improved air quality, a new lighting system, and a refurbished court. The Sports Center features the newly refurbished Rubin Family Court and Dolcemaschio Scoreboard. • The Weight Room undergoes an extensive remodel and is renamed the Peak Performance Center. The new state-of-the-art athletic training facility is designed to support the total health and well being of Windward students and the entire community.

The Center for Teaching and Learning is a 25,318 square foot dynamic learning space that brings together the Windward community to exchange ideas, learn together, and to grow. The 400 Building, also known as the Science, Dance, and Music Center, is 14,248 square feet.
