Windward Hosts Tai Chi Group on Campus A

s part of Windward’s ongoing community engagement efforts, the School welcomed the Daichi Group back to campus Nov. 15. The Mar Vista-based tai chi group gave an outdoor presentation of the ancient art form of tai chi to Windward’s Mandarin 4 students, who then joined in the exercises. Following the tai chi practice, the Daichi Group members joined students in the classroom to share their stories, resulting in a rich, cultural learning experience. The Daichi Group made their first visit to Windward’s campus last Spring.

Windward Students Teach Tech to Area Seniors

W

indward hosted its second session of the School’s Windward Teaches Tech program Nov. 3. Working in concert with Mar Vista Community Council’s Aging in Place Committee, the program pairs Windward students with senior residents from the community so they can teach them skills in everything from social media and apps to ride-share services. The popular event, which covers such topics as Netflix, Hulu, QR codes, and Amazon, was filled to capacity and even had a waiting list. Windward plans to hold three additional sessions after the first of the year, so keep your eyes open for details on future dates.

Windward Hosts Thanksgiving Dinner at WCC

O

n Nov. 15, students and parents continued Windward’s longstanding partnership with the Westside Children’s Center (WCC), teaming up to host the Center’s annual Thanksgiving dinner. This year’s volunteers donated and prepared the ingredients to make a full turkey dinner for over 300 people on site at the WCC. Parents and volunteers prepped and cooked the food that they donated, while students served, decorated, and hosted an arts and crafts fair for the WCC clients. It was yet another joyous celebration of the holiday spirit and a day focused on building friendships across generations and communities.

Windward Partners with Local School on New Latin Dance Class

W

indward has launched a new partnership with the Richland Avenue Elementary School in Mar Vista. In the 11-week after-school program, Richland students travel to Windward’s campus to learn various forms of Latin dance taught by Windward Dance guest artists and student volunteers. The program provides a communal, hands-on learning experience for students from both schools and offers Richland students the opportunity to develop social skills and gain confidence interacting with others.
