CONSTRUCTION UPDATE: INNOVATION & ARTS CENTER

We are pleased to share that the project is going smoothly and has minimal impacts on our campus and the surrounding neighbors.

The contractor, Turner Construction, continues to be committed to supporting our local community by:

• Timing truck arrivals and departures during the quieter hours of the school days (after morning drop-off and before afternoon pick-up), minimizing the impact on our traffic on the surrounding streets.

• Routinely watering dirt to reduce dust.

• Monitoring the air quality throughout the day ensures it is safe for all.

• Managing noise by installing a 12’ sound wall to minimize the noise experienced by the local apartment community.

• Staging of materials and personnel all on campus.

• Utilizing designated offsite parking for the contractor and their subcontractors. Windward’s Security Team will monitor parking, ensuring that individuals only park in approved areas.

• Traffic Control flaggers and spotters.

• Maintaining good housekeeping (street sweeping and dust control) outside the fencing.

• Robust “Active Caring Program” (which rewards exceptional efforts by the Turner team and subs) - Building Life Award, Water Bottle Recycling Program, Respectful & Inclusive Workshop Training, and Safety Incentive Program.

MARCH/APRIL PROJECT LOOK AHEAD

• Pouring the basement slab on grade

• Building the concrete structural shear wall

• Grading /backfill of the basement

• Installing the level 1 footings

• Installing the level 1 underground electrical and plumbing

In February, Mar Vista Park showcased the opening of their new batting cage. The batting cage stemmed from the Park’s desire to provide a facility for the local community to utilize. Windward has supported the Park for many decades through annual donations, and was happy to provide the funding necessary to build this new structure. Previously, Windward has provided playground equipment, upgrades to the soccer field, new trees, funds for holiday events, and more.

For the past eight weeks, 3rd-5th Grade students have participated in an after-school science class at Windward School. Students had the opportunity to explore various aspects of science through hands-on lab activities and science projects!

Our 9th and 10th Graders have continued Service Learning trips throughout the school year. Twice a month, small groups of students, along with Windward teachers, go to one of our partner organizations to volunteer. We have been fortunate enough to partner with several different organizations in West LA, including PATH (People Assisting the Homeless), Bread & Roses, Hope in a Suitcase, and the Surfrider Foundation.
