What is the Windward Fund 100% in 100 Days of Giving campaign?
T
he Windward Fund is the School’s top fundraising priority. Each year, we ask all families to make a tax-deductible gift that supports current operations of the School during the fiscal year the gift is received. Gifts immediately benefit our community by providing substantial funding for Program Enhancements, Research and Development, and Financial Aid. Gifts from parents, alumni, Board of Trustees, parents of alumni, grandparents, faculty, staff, and friends help make this possible.
You enrolled your child in an independent school because you were attracted to the excellent faculty and the small class sizes. You found excellence, and your gifts allow you to help sustain it. – The National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS)
Why is the fundraiser launched at the start of the school year?
PROGRAM ENHANCEMENTS
S
ince all Windward Fund donations are used during the academic year they are received, by launching the campaign at the beginning of the school year, we can better anticipate the total amount that will be raised and utilize the funds immediately to benefit all students, faculty, staff, and community members. Last year, we were able to exceed our financial goal in the 100 Days of Giving campaign, which enabled us to implement funds and make improvements across the campus during the school year.
RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT
• Each department is given state of the art equipment, tools, and resources necessary to provide Windward students with a thorough, dynamic education.
• Partnerships with prominent universities ensure that Windward stays on the cutting edge of education and remains innovative in our programs and curriculum.
• Supporting everything from technology needs to training equipment, set pieces for plays and musicals, to scholarly archive access, every student and member of the faculty and staff benefits from program enhancements every day.
• Encouraging and supporting the life-long learning of our faculty and staff enables them to attend professional workshops and conferences where they forge relationships with others in their field and enhance their expertise.
FINANCIAL AID
• Access and inclusion have always been central to Windward’s identity. • A robust Financial Aid program is critical to ensuring economic diversity and attracting talented students from myriad backgrounds. • $2.4 million is dedicated to Financial Aid for the 2017-18 academic year.

Why should I give to the Windward Fund?
e are proud of our high rate of parent participation, which sends a strong signal of our community’s belief in the power of a Windward education. Since every student benefits from the Windward Fund, every family is expected to support this important school-wide effort each year by giving to the best of their ability within the 100 day time frame. *Last year we reached 95% parent involvement—one of the highest rates among independent secondary schools in our area. Parent participation also helps generate additional support from foundations and other external organizations.

WINDWARD FUND IMPACT
Here are a few items that are slated to be completed with the money raised from the 2017-18 Windward Fund.
THE GIFT OF TIME AND TALENT:
Parent participation in school life has been a cornerstone of the Windward experience since the School’s founding in 1971. Every year, we work with passionate, engaged parents who serve as Windward Fund volunteers and help solicit and steward our current parents. The role of our Windward Fund volunteers is crucial to the success of the Windward Fund. The personal commitment of time and service to the School serves as a catalyst for others to give, and we are deeply appreciative of their support.
ROOMS 470 AND 485
Central classroom pods will be removed to make room for new furniture, which will facilitate better teaching and learning in Physics classes. This change will also enable faculty members to better utilize new program enhancements in their curriculum.
VISUAL AND MEDIA ARTS
All of the Media Lab computers will be updated to 27-inch Macs, which will be used in a new Film Production class offered this Fall. The class will be taught by new faculty member Drue Metz.

AUDIOVISUAL UPGRADES
Thirteen classrooms will be updated with new LED lighting, which will allow for greater lighting flexibility for teachers, as well as decrease the School’s electricity use as part of our ongoing efforts in sustainability. The lighting and sound system in the Lewis Jackson Memorial Sports Center will be upgraded to allow for expanded capabilities. A new audio system is also being installed on the Leichtman-Levine Family Foundation Bridge, as well as between the 400 Building and the Center for Teaching and Learning, to increase the School’s usable event space.
