D
FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
uring the last year, as we have engaged in a school-wide Strategic Planning process that will help guide Windward’s future growth, we have also had an opportunity to reflect upon the many objectives we have accomplished in the recent past. Across our learning community, Windward’s commitment to innovation has yielded new and engaging programs, cuttingedge facilities, and forward-looking initiatives that more than ever enable us to equip students with the knowledge and experiences needed for success in the world they will one day inherit. Our ongoing efforts to develop partnerships and conduct deep research have not only helped us pursue the best emerging ideas from around the globe, but also to implement them through the focus of Windward’s unique educational vision. In taking stock of everything we have realized together in such a relatively short period of time, it is important to recognize each of the contributions that have provided the necessary catalyst time and again to transform concepts and dreams to reality. Only with the continued strong support of our community have we been able to be so bold in our planning, taking action to shape the classrooms of today in order to help lay the foundation for the society of tomorrow. As you will see throughout this edition of our Report on Philanthropy, support of Windward still takes on many forms— coming through gifts of time, talent, and endorsement from individuals and organizations, each act adding further to a greater collective impact. We are grateful for every act of generosity, for each volunteer and contributor who believes in the importance of Windward’s educational mission and helps to realize that vision through their participation in the life of our School. We should take pride in this work that we do together, for the new spaces and programs it has made possible, for the community ties that it has created, and—most important—for the lasting effect it has on the lives of our students.
02
Among the many who have given selflessly to help realize Windward’s goals, it is impossible to measure the gratitude I have for the contributions of Elliot Gordon ’74, who has served the School as Chair of the Board of Trustees since 2010. (See Page 3.) A pioneering member of Windward’s first graduating class as well as the parent of a secondgeneration alumnus, Elliot has long modeled dedication to this School community and the principles upon which it was founded. We are likewise fortunate to welcome Neil Wertleib, who is committed to serving with the same spirit as our next Board Chair. Neil, the parent of three Windwardians, has shown tremendous enthusiasm in his approach to guiding the current work of the Strategic Planning Committee. With Windward approaching its next phase of innovative growth, his wisdom and leadership will be instrumental in helping to chart our future progress. I look forward to working alongside Neil and the rest of our Trustees as we anticipate the challenges that might await us next and transform them into additional milestones of our ongoing collaborative accomplishment. We hope that you will continue to join us on this journey. This is an exciting moment to witness in Windward’s history, and more than ever before, this is an important time to participate in Windward’s future. With deep appreciation,
Tom Gilder Head of School
A TRIBUTE TO ELLIOT GORDON ’74
W
e salute Elliot Gordon ’74, who concludes his six-year tenure as Chair of Windward’s Board of Trustees having provided a timeless and indelible legacy of service to the School, our students, and the founding ideals that remain at the heart of Windward’s decades-long commitment to providing a dynamic education within a nurturing community. Since first joining Shirley Windward and Carl Parsons as a student in their pioneering pursuit of a new approach to education, Elliot has been a champion for Windward in capacities too numerous to tally. Throughout his years as student, alumnus, second-generation parent (of Daniel ’10), Trustee, and Board Chair, his experiences bridge a continuum of Windward’s growth, reaching from the past to the present to guide the School further on its future path. With the rich perspective that comes from having worn so many hats, Elliot has long approached his role as Board Chair with deep personal convictions and love for Windward, providing true unflagging support that has touched every facet of our community. The numerous accomplishments that have been realized under the current Strategic Plan, which was authored under his guidance six years ago, are a testament to both his belief in transformative education and his ability to build and leverage strong partnerships. Entrusted with stewardship of the School and leading in close collaboration with Head of School Tom Gilder and numerous others, Elliot has worked tirelessly to ensure that Windward can fulfill its core mission and pursue its innovative goals while remaining financially sound and well-positioned to continue its trajectory of growth. Elliot has been incredibly selfless in contributing his time and knowledge whenever possible, his seemingly omnipresent participation in school events and community functions underlining the personal investment he has made both in Windward and in the wide spectrum of people who could benefit from his counsel and support.
In fact, it is this precise level of dedication—a philanthropic willingness to make contributions big and small—that is the most defining characteristic of his work during the last decade. Whether arranging his schedule to address families and friends at annual events, mobilizing volunteers on the planning of a large project, or simply making the time to provide words of support and mentorship to a freshly minted Windward graduate, Elliot Gordon has embodied both the dynamism and the nurturing qualities so characteristic of the School he has supported in countless ways. Elliot, we thank you for your service and will forever appreciate all that you have done to give back to Windward. Your efforts have made an impact on the lives of countless students and educators; the legacy of your work will continue to benefit those who will follow in their path. Across our School, there are so many who have benefited in myriad ways from your leadership, friendship, and bold willingness to act in support of causes worth believing in. You and your family will always be a part of this community, which you have worked so hard to improve, and we look forward to your continued involvement. On behalf of all those whose lives you have touched, we are immensely grateful for your encouragement and deep belief in the importance of building institutions that nurture the individual and strengthen the community.

THANK YOU TO OUR DEPARTING TRUSTEES
We are deeply grateful to all who have served Windward as Trustees since the School’s founding in 1971 and would like to salute the three individuals who are leaving the Board this year. Each has made innumerable contributions of time and talent through their leadership and dedication, helping to ensure that Windward will continue our pursuit of innovation and excellence in education. As you join the distinguished group of former Trustees, please know that you are always a member of the Windward community, and we look forward to your ongoing involvement in the life of the School.
BRUCE ESKOVITZ
Dr. Bruce Eskovitz departs the Board after completing his three-year term in the role of Faculty Trustee. A member of the Board’s Finance Committee, Bruce contributed a unique and important perspective built upon his first-hand classroom experiences and longstanding relationships within the Windward community. His steadfast commitment resulted in the achievement of an important milestone: leading the Faculty and Staff in 2014-15 to their first-ever achievement of a 100 percent giving rate to the Windward Fund, an important philanthropic benchmark that was repeated this past year. While Bruce’s wisdom will be missed on the Board, we look forward to his continued contributions as a faculty colleague, student mentor, and artist.
JANE GUTMAN
Jane Gutman has served the Windward community in many capacities, joining the Board of Trustees after a successful term as President of the Parent Guild during the 2011-12 school year. She also co-chaired Windward’s Annual Fund during a crucial period of growth. The mother of alumnus
Peter ’12, Jane’s service to the Board’s Trustees, Major Gifts, and Stewardship committees was enriched by her broad scope of experience as a leader in higher education, a successful organizer of volunteers, and a fundraiser for many causes. We are deeply grateful for Jane’s years of contributions and generous service to the Windward community.
PAMELA MASS
Pamela Mass broadened her involvement at Windward even further over the last year by joining the Board of Trustees as part of her role as Parent Guild President during the 2015-16 school year. Pamela’s contributions to the Board of Trustees came in addition to numerous years of service to the Parent Guild Board—including a two-time role as Vice President—and innumerable efforts as a volunteer and organizer within the community. Among many highlights of her leadership, the School community celebrated an extremely successful Spring Event and grew closer through enhanced social programming and volunteer opportunities. As her children Nolan ’17, Oliver ’19, and Theo ’22 pursue their studies at Windward in 2016-17, the Parent Guild will continue benefiting from Pamela’s guidance and expertise as she serves as the Past President on the Executive Committee.

REPORT ON PHILANTHROPY
BIANCA LAMBERT ’16:
MY STORY FINANCIAL AID SPOTLIGHT ianca Lambert ’16 has always been appreciative of the opportunities that she has been given by her Windward education, made possible by the School’s Financial Aid program. Modeling the effort of both her parents who work full-time, she has long understood the value and importance of giving her best to her own duties as a student and making the very most of the options presented to her so that she may play an active role in forging her own future. Entering into Windward in 7th grade, Bianca made the most of her Windward experience, diving head first into an array of academic and extracurricular options. A dedicated student and leader, she elected to tackle an intellectually rigorous course of study, culminating with a slate of classes that not only encompassed AP-level challenges, but also included stimulating selections such as a seminar on Dostoyevsky and a course in Japanese—conducted virtually through the Global Online Academy. She augmented these experiences by exploring numerous activities and contributing to a host of clubs. A short list of her extensive extracurricular involvements includes: volunteering weekly at the Los Angeles Zoo; studying ballet, tap, and harp; and participating on the varsity volleyball, track, and swim teams. She also contributed to the Student Diversity Board, expressed herself in the Chamber Music Ensemble and Tri M Music Honor Society, and demonstrated an appreciation and affinity for international culture as part of the French Honor Society. Somehow, she also found time to conduct research last summer at a UCLA genetics lab, where she recorded experimental data and assisted in the hunt for new information using an online genome browser. But perhaps Bianca’s most meaningful discoveries at Windward have sprung from her participation in the blossoming Global Studies program, which she characterizes as one of the most important experiences of her educational life to date. “I feel
10
that my best decision at Windward was to become a Global Scholar,” says Bianca. “In 10th grade, we had the opportunity to work with the USC Shoah Foundation to learn about the Holocaust and the Rwandan Genocide. Rather than simply discuss a text or historical documents, the class reviewed the primary source material ourselves—watching and listening to first-hand accounts of survivors who had the courage to share nearly unimaginable stories for future generations.” Bianca decided to get further involved by progressing to a global research seminar. While she and her classmates were challenged by ambitious material and complex questions for discussion, they also always felt that they had the freedom to grow and academically explore without consequence—a hallmark of Windward’s approach. Bianca says that: “It was an amazing experience because I felt that I could learn and I could make mistakes, but I also always knew that my teacher would still be there to guide me.” More opportunities to learn about global culture followed, including an immersive trip to France and a cultural survey/service journey to rural Cambodia that Bianca was able to take part in with the help of additional aid from Windward. As Bianca began looking at college programs, she was drawn to opportunities that had a global perspective and focus on international affairs. She was particularly searching for an environment that offered the similar nurturing and inspiring qualities she had found so critical to her Windward experience. After considering a variety of options across the country, she found the perfect match in the Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University, a widely recognized and globally oriented school, where she will begin in the Fall of 2016 and pursue the passions ignited by her Windward experiences. “Going into college, I feel prepared for taking on university classes as well as navigating how to live on my own because of everything that Windward has taught me—from the importance of meeting with teachers to how to stay organized, to the best way to utilize school resources, like writing centers. Windward’s environment has not only let me push myself academically as much as possible, but it has also let me chase after my dreams without worry because I know I will always have support behind me. I am confident that I will be successful and am so grateful for everything that Windward has taught me, both in and out of the classroom.”

ENHANCEMENTS A contribution to the Windward Fund is an investment in the growth of programs and initiatives that help our students thrive. With this support, Windward faculty have the equipment, tools, and resources necessary to ensure that students receive the best education possible. From new technologies to new textbooks, state of the art equipment, and everything in between, the Program Enhancement budget is a critical way to ensure that Windward is able to continue providing an innovative, dynamic education for students. Here is a highlight of one of the many programs that benefited from the Windward Fund during the past school year.
SPOTLIGHT ON THE CREATE STUDIO
O
pened in August 2015 following a summer-long construction project, the CREATE Studio (Collaborative Resources for Engineers, Artists, Technologists, and Entrepreneurs) is a library of tools, materials, and resources for making that is used by students campus-wide.
Led by CREATE Studio Director Dorothy Lee and a team of specially trained student stewards, the Studio offers a supportive and symbiotic community that welcomes all fields of interest, levels of experience, and all disciplines—from Engineering to Entrepreneurship and Chemistry to ChallengeBased Learning. The Studio is grounded in the belief that making is a critical element in developing innovative thinkers and in creating an environment of active curiosity and idea exploration that rewards failure—often the greatest teacher. Through making, students become empowered to become more than just consumers; they become hobbyists, entrepreneurs, critics, advisors, and active learners.
12
In the 2015-16 school year, the Studio served as the hub for a wide range of inventive, interdisciplinary projects. The 8th Grade English class was challenged to design a house that symbolized a character in Harper Lee’s classic “To Kill a Mockingbird.” Students in the 9th Grade Physics class were given four weeks to create small-scale homes that included at least two rooms with two lights, powered by inwall circuitry. As part of their History class, other 9th Grade students used 3D printing and laser cutters to construct monuments—a thoughtful blend of aesthetics and logistics. Perhaps the most dramatic display of interdisciplinary making in the Studio last year was the creation of wearable technology by Middle School students in the Costume Design Class, taught by Lyn Hoge. Through their work in the CREATE Studio, students designed and produced a light-up jellyfish skirt that was the star of their successful production of “The Little Mermaid Jr.”

T
hanks to the Research and Development program, faculty and staff are able to stay current in their areas of interest, forge reciprocal relationships with others in their field, and enhance their expertise by acquiring new-found skills. Your support of Research and Development through the Windward Fund in 2015-16 enabled faculty and staff members to expand their skills and bring new excitement and ideas back into the classroom. Here are a few highlights of the many enriching Research and Development opportunities supported by the Windward Fund last year.
PEOPLE OF COLOR CONFERENCE Nine Windward faculty and staff members attended the National Association of Independent Schools’ 28th Annual People of Color Conference (PoCC), held last December in Tampa. The theme for the 2015-16 conference was: “Art, Science, Soul, and the Equity Imperative.” The People of Color Conference is NAIS’ flagship commitment to equity and justice in teaching and learning. Tyrone Powell, Windward’s Athletic Director for Sports Administration, felt extremely fortunate to be able to take part in the perspective-expanding conference. “I’m grateful for being in a place where people could share their experiences about culture and gender and for being afforded an opportunity to reflect on my vocabulary and the vocabulary of the adults in our community,” Tyrone said.
QUIET SUMMER INSTITUTE In June, a team of five teachers and administrators represented Windward at the inaugural Quiet Summer Institute in New York City. The Quiet Summer Institute is an offshoot of the Quiet Revolution in education, which encourages the creation of Quiet Schools where everyone is recognized for their potential to learn and lead in authentic ways. The Quiet Summer Institute is a natural continuation of Windward’s inclusivity and Challenge Success initiatives, which strive to create a supportive community that welcomes and embraces all types of learners and personality styles.
“As a teacher, I’ve always been attentive to the different learning and personality styles of my students, but I’d never been trained to fully understand temperament,” said Peggy Procter, Director of the Upper School. “The Quiet Summer Institute opened my eyes to the research around introversion and to what my introverted students and colleagues need in order to thrive.”
REINVENTING MATHEMATICS Six Windward faculty members attended a January symposium in Culver City on “Reinventing Mathematics Education,” which addressed teaching mathematics in a technologically sophisticated society. The symposium featured three primary speakers: Conrad Wolfram, the Strategic Director and European Co-Founder/CEO of the Wolfram group of companies; Dr. Constance Kamii, a student of Piaget and a professor of early childhood education known for her research on how children construct mathematical knowledge; and Dr. Ilana Horn whose research looks at mathematics teachers’ learning to improve instruction. Faculty members attended all three presentations, as well as breakout sessions led by well-known mathematicians/ mathematics educators, which addressed the greater problems with mathematics education in K-12 education in today’s society.
KLINGENSTEIN SUMMER INSTITUTE Physics teacher and CREATE Studio Director Dorothy Lee was accepted as one of 80 teachers around the world to take part in the June Klingenstein Summer Institute for Early Career Teachers in Lawrenceville, N.J. The intensive two-week program is a condensed version of the core values of Columbia University’s Teachers College, the first and largest graduate school of education in the country. During the program, participants attended group lectures with their peers—all early-career teachers from independent schools—where they learned about teaching strategies based on cognitive science and leadership. Dorothy, who had previously completed her master’s degree at Teachers College, said her time at the Institute served as an inspiration to her. “It was refreshing to have time dedicated to working with other similarly passionate teachers looking to improve our crafts,” she said. “I came out of it with a renewed focus on incorporating issues of diversity into my classroom.”

VOLUNTEER
Philanthropy and volunteerism are two crucial cornerstones of a growing school community. So many generous families and organizations have contributed to this culture of giving and helped Windward reach new heights. We celebrate all those who have given their time and support to the School in a multitude of ways and salute these volunteers who have helped lead over the years.
BOB AND RACHEL CLIFFORD
D
edicated volunteers and supporters of Windward, Rachel and Bob Clifford are committed to contributing their time and skill toward collaborative efforts that have helped to ensure the School’s continued growth and future success. Demonstrating the power that parent volunteer engagement can have toward achieving a common goal, their willingness to take a leading role as organizers within our parent community is most apparent in their service to the School as Co-Chairs of the Windward Fund—not once, but three times. Through outstanding organization and articulation of the importance of philanthropy, they have helped contributions to the Fund steadily increase, helping to grow the impact of a program that directly impacts Program Enhancements, Research and Development, and Financial Aid. In addition, Rachel and Bob have contributed as Major Gift donors, helping to transform one part of the campus that has held particularly special meaning for their son, Robbie ’17, and his classmates. The resulting Clifford Family Dugout is a key element of the recently revitalized field program, generously providing a new home for the Wildcats Baseball team and ensuring the legacy of a facility for the many students who will follow in the (base) path.

JOE SLISKOVICH AND JENNIFER HARRIS
J
ennifer Harris and Joe Sliskovich have been dedicated supporters of Windward, generously providing expertise, time, and effort toward important initiatives that have directly benefited the School community. The parents of Natalie ’18, this past year they served on the Windward Fund Leadership Committee, helping to raise record-level funding to benefit students, Financial Aid, and continued efforts to conduct the Research and Development of innovative educational programs. Jennifer also contributed to the enormous success of Taste!, this year’s fantastic Spring Event held at the Conga Room. As CoChair, she contributed numerous hours of collaborative work with a large team of volunteers, planning for months to execute a beautiful event that provided a capstone social gathering for the community as well as the opportunity to raise critical funding for Windward’s growth. The successful outcome was made even better by her pledge to serve again in 2016-17 as a Co-Chair of this important evening of fun and philanthropy.

GIFTS By partnering with Tom Gilder and our Board of Trustees, Major Gifts donors provide the necessary funding for Windward to take significant steps forward in realizing our Strategic Plan, including enhancing academic programs, upgrading facilities, and building our endowment to ensure the longterm financial health of the School. Major gifts are often multi-year pledges from families who have made the philanthropic commitment to support the School at the highest level—above and beyond their gifts to the Windward Fund. Thank you to each of the families who have made these generous gifts, which will impact Windward School for years to come. Through the leadership of Major Gifts Co-Chairs Bryan Ezralow, Tony Rubin, and Perrie Weiner, Windward has raised over $8 million in transformational gifts, which help ensure that the School will continue to innovate and thrive.

MAJOR GIFTS AT WORK PEAK PERFORMANCE Windward continues to implement innovative ways of helping students prepare for all of the moments where they must perform at a peak level, as well as providing them with a broad toolset with which to achieve balance and maintain wellness throughout their lives. With equipment additions in the Peak Performance Center, expanded healthy menu options in the Meshulam Riklis and Pia Zadora Pavilion, and broadened program development, the transformative potential of this multi-pronged approach was underscored by student testimonials featured in a Spring 2016 New York Times article recognizing Windward’s efforts to support students in ways that actively prepare them to lead happy, healthy, and meaningful lives.
PERFORMING ARTS The continually evolving Performing Arts program encourages both students and faculty to push artistic boundaries while developing a high standard for production values. Students have continued to benefit from the unique opportunities afforded by performing at professional venues, including Zipper Concert Hall, the Grammy Museum, and the Conga Room. The addition of three talented new faculty members—James Patric Moran, Dr. Daniel Koh, and John Henningsen—has been complemented by technical and facility enhancements to the Blackbox theatre space, providing added creative
momentum for the development of upcoming stage productions and performances on the Windward campus.
VISUAL & MEDIA ARTS Advances in the Media Arts program are directed at giving students more opportunities for expressing their personal vision and voice, including curricular enhancements structured around webbased storytelling and fine art video practices. With renovation of photography facilities and the introduction of the Mancuso Family Design Studio, additional spaces are being made available to support this interdisciplinary approach across the curriculum. These advances have been augmented by three community events: Fallen Fruit; a tour and discussion at the home of art collectors Teddy and Emily Greenspan; and a walking tour of the Culver City Art District.
STEAM With an increasing number of students expressing strong interest in the various fields of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics), a wider selection of new and redesigned curricular options has been developed to accommodate growth across each discipline. These new opportunities, which include Product Design, Introduction to Electronics, Introduction to Mechanisms and Machines, Introduction to
Programming, and Advanced Mechanical Engineering, have been developed to be engaging and project based, taught by a core of STEAM teachers dedicated to collaborating around a common vocabulary and toolset. The introduction of spaces such as the CREATE Studio provide a space on campus for students to explore their creativity, push their boundaries, and learn from one another.
ROBOTICS With additional equipment and support in the Robotics Lab, teams approached their challenges with renewed vigor. The Windward Omnicats both hosted and won the Southern California Regional First Lego League Robotics Qualifying Tournament, in Windward’s newly renovated multi-purpose gym, and advanced to the FRC state championships.
GLOBAL STUDIES Gifts supporting the cross-cultural Global Studies Initiative continue to provide Windward students with exciting and immersive opportunities to not only learn about global issues, but also to take an active role as global citizens. Students’ experiences have included participation in classes with the Global Online Academy and both service and cultural trips to locales as diverse as Paris, Cambodia, Peru, the Dominican Republic, and Guatemala.

athering for a celebration of community and cause, Spring Event 2016 provided attendees with a Taste of Windward and an elegant evening downtown in the trendy Conga Room nightclub. From Latin rhythms to global food choices and the anticipation of a “mysterious” prize-filled lockbox (not to mention bandelier-clad oyster-shucking waitstaff!), revelers enjoyed a night of dance, delicious cuisine, and exciting bidding, all benefiting Windward’s Financial Aid and Research and Development efforts. Windward extends its heartfelt thanks to hosts Brad Gluckstein and Yanka Burgos for again generously opening their venue’s doors for a deserving cause. Spring Event would not have been possible without the contributions of Co-Chairs Jennifer Harris and Karen Silver along with their entire volunteer team. The night’s success depended on your efforts and support, which helped stage our most successful Spring Event yet! Over $250,000 was raised in support of Windward, ensuring continued deep research and professional study opportunities for our faculty as well as making it possible for deserving students to receive an education that will help them realize their full potential. Thank you to all who generously participated in support of this cause, which will make a significant impact for both our students and faculty.

OF
GIVING
Windward, like most independent schools, relies upon charitable gifts beyond tuition income to support school programs. The special attributes that set Windward apart—small classes, innovative teaching, a diverse student body, well-maintained facilities, and dynamic offerings beyond core classes—are expensive. Rather than increasing tuition to support them, we solicit tax-deductible donations through various initiatives that help the School and allow families to give based on their ability. Cash, Check, or Credit Card Your cash gift is tax deductible within the guidelines established by the IRS. Cash gifts can be made by check or can be charged to your Visa, MasterCard, or American Express. Credit card gifts can be made online at www.windwardschool.org/give or by contacting Maureen Takahashi at (213) 261-2086.
to double or triple your gift. You can check with your employer or on the Windward website at www.windwardschool.org/ waystogive to determine if your gift is eligible for matching. Simply send us the appropriate paperwork from your employer’s Human Resources Department, and your gift to Windward School will be matched according to your company’s guidelines.
Recurring Gifts Windward School provides the opportunity to give at any frequency. If you’re interested in giving a monthly, quarterly, or yearly donation, visit our website at www.windwardschool.org/give. Matching Gifts Gift matching is a way to increase the value of your own charitable gift through your employer. Corporate Matching Gift programs are a great way

Securities A gift to Windward of appreciated securities entitles the donor to a charitable deduction for its full current market value, without paying the capital gains tax on the appreciation, which would be required if the securities were sold for personal gain. Stock transfer instructions follow and can also be found online at www.windwardschool.org/ waystogive.
