WINDWARD SCHOOL
FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL AND THE CHAIR OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES
At Windward, we talk frequently, and passionately, about community—faculty, staff, alumni, trustees, grandparents, parents of alumni, and especially the students, who are at the heart of the School. In this year’s Report on Philanthropy, we celebrate the people who make up our community and the contributions they have given to support the life-changing education we provide our students. As supporters, you are invaluable members of our community. Working together, we will turn our ambitious Strategic Plan, which represents the future of our School, into an extraordinary reality for our community in the years ahead. Your contributions this past year enabled us to reflect, build, grow, and inspire across every aspect of school life.
REPORT ON PHILANTHROPY
We initiated thought-provoking and farreaching discussions with our students against the backdrop of an ever-changing world. This meaningful exploration of tolerance and inclusivity enriched our core values as an institution and fostered an awareness of global citizenship among our students. We honed our curriculum and introduced a responsive teaching philosophy, which celebrates the individuality of our students and adjusts instruction to ensure they reach their full potential. This studentcentric approach, which we will be further incorporating in the coming school year, is a clear manifestation of our mission to provide a dynamic, engaging education within a nurturing, inclusive community. We enhanced our already exceptional resources and facilities to provide new opportunities for students to be active learners and develop 21st century skills such as collaboration, communication, leadership, problem-solving, and grit.
These are just a few examples of the powerful ways in which your gift made a lasting impact on the lives of our students this past year. We hope you enjoy this review of the progress we have made together as a community and look forward to building on these successes with you in the year to come. Tom Gilder Head of School
Neil Wertlieb Chair of the Board of Trustees

BILL MCMORROW Bill McMorrow departs the Board after three years of dedicated service. A steadfast advocate of achieving balance in school life, Bill was in ardent favor of the athletic field project. His position as a highly experienced Board member was invaluable with respect to invigorating the scope of impact and processes of the Windward Board of Trustees. Bill was also a very accessible member of the Board and was highly visible on campus throughout his tenure. Father to alumnus Tyler ’15, who attends University of Southern California, Bill’s impact on our community was enriched by his active years of service with other organizations. He is a member of the Loyola High School Board of Regents and the USC Lusk Center for Real Estate Executives Board. He also engages in local charities including Chrysalis, the Rape Treatment Center, Village School, and Loyola High School. We respectfully thank Bill for his years of service and significant contributions to Windward.
BRYAN EZRALOW Bryan Ezralow departs the Board after completing an impressive nine years of service. As Co-Chair of the Major Gifts Committee and member of both the Advancement Committee and Committee of Trustees, Bryan has played a large part in helping us to establish the Board as it exists today. Bryan showcased an acute talent for clarity and strategic thinking in his role in cultivation of the Board and his presentation of Board expectations. Always taking a wide angle approach, Bryan kept Windward’s big ideas in mind and often generously hosted many events at his home to provide space for discussions about the future. Father to three alumni—Alexandra ’12, University of Wisconsin; Preston ’17, University of Michigan; and Spencer ’14, University of Michigan—Bryan will remain one of our most loyal community members. We extend our deepest gratitude to Bryan for his many years of service and innovation.
CHRIS SMALE While she is departing the Board of Trustees at the close of her service as the 2016-17 Parent Guild President, Chris Smale will continue her engagement with the Windward community in many ways. She will carry on her role as a founding member of the School Speaker Alliance of Los Angeles (SSALA), an organization whose intent speaks to the heart of her impact as Parent Guild President. SSALA will bring together parents from Westside schools to recruit informative speakers and host collaborative events. Chris’ impact as liaison between the Board of Trustees and the Parent Guild was grounded in her ability to infuse the Windward community with an increased focus on the nurturing experience for parents. As her children, Liana ’16, who attends University of Michigan, and Kara ’20, continue their education, Chris will serve as Past President on the Parent Guild Executive Committee. We thank Chris for her embodiment of Windward’s core values and willingness to continue generously donating her time and expertise to the Parent Guild.

hands-on HISTORY During April of this year, you may have been fooled by an exhibit that looked like a showcase of ancient artifacts in the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL). Rather, you were looking at well-crafted student work that represented Windward’s Material Culture of Ancient/Classical India Artifact assignment for our Ninth Grade World History I students. This recreation project is just one sterling example of how resources provided by the Windward Fund have led faculty to reimagine teaching. This hands-on project focused on the significance of everyday and ritual objects in the formation of empires and was the product of collaboration between the CREATE Studio and History teacher Dahlia Setiyawan, Ph.D. The objects represented artifacts from the Mauryan (324-184 BCE) to the Gupta (320-550 CE) eras of Indian history. Students combined available resources on campus, from
the ARTstor database to the CREATE Studio itself, to engage with the material. The result of their work was not only a physical recreation of the artifacts but also a simulation of the process through which they were originally created. Students tested materials and methods as close as possible to those originally used. The CREATE Studio was transformed into what felt like a workshop of ancient India. Some students learned to carve a sculpture out of blocks of soap or foam in place of stone. Others carved molds and cast wax medallions in place of bronze. Through this artifact recreation process, students developed a strong appreciation for the craftsmanship behind these precious objects and an understanding of the context in which they were made.

College Counseling Study Room Upon returning to school this fall, students were greeted by a new study room adjacent to the main area on the ground floor of the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL). Slated as a venue for College Counseling to use, the room was completed over the summer and had a fully booked schedule prior to students returning to campus in August. Before Study Room C was created, finding a quiet place for visiting college representatives to meet with students was a challenge. Now, the space is primarily dedicated to hosting these information sessions and student interviews. Over the course of the 2016-17 school year, 84 of these visits took place, and students were able to comfortably and privately meet with college representatives in the interest of discovering their future path. The room was also used as a quiet space to work or meet with student groups throughout the year.

Performing Arts Technology Upgrades Throughout the course of the 2016-17 school year, Performing Arts students impressed the community with impactful performances that took place all over campus. An investment in more advanced lighting and sound equipment over the summer expanded the possibilities for productions to take new forms. From a theater-in-theround production of “12 Angry Jurors, to a traveling multimedia dance performance on Bright Commons and in the Lewis Jackson Memorial Sports Center, students and faculty now can dare to dream about exploratory venues and shows because they have technology that moves with them. The new technology, purchased with Windward Fund donations, also allowed for students to get hands-on experience with state-of-the-art industry
standard equipment and deepened their engagement in the programming and design of campus productions. Having access to such equipment fueled a surge of student interest in the Performing Arts Technology program causing course registration numbers to triple over the past year. There are now more design and creative possibilities than ever before, with moving lights and LED color changers to highlight student work and performance. Additionally, the ability to incorporate high caliber equipment into teaching has served to attract a number of guest artists to campus as mentors for our students.

MENTORS IN Violence Prevention Gender Conference Written by conference attendees:
MEGHAN TALLY English Teacher; Chair; Associate Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning KEVIN COALE Upper School Dean of Students For three days in early June at Cal State Dominguez Hills, Jackson Katz, Ph.D., La Shonda Coleman, and Daryl Fort led a group of 30 educators in an intensive, experiential training program, Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP). The program challenged our thinking about relationship dynamics and norms as well as how our cultures are gendered both in and beyond schools. We learned how the MVP approach is about creating opportunities for dialogue in our communities and for speaking, sharing, and finding our own approaches to authentic leadership.
It was extraordinary hearing from Katz himself about his research and training with him and his team in leadership and facilitation. With hands-on scenarios, group discussions, and interactive exercises, we delved into the existing landscape of gender violence and approaches to prevention. We studied the ways in which mainstream media normalizes and desensitizes us to violence. We considered the difference between prevention and risk reduction, and we grappled with pervasive realities of gender violence affecting both our students’ and our own environments. Grounded in social justice principles, with an aim to “invite not indict,” MVP is a program about affirming everyone’s humanity and agency whatever a person’s gender identity. The training offered us models for facilitating conversations on our own school campuses and opening space for dialogue through empathy, inquiry, and active listening. It was a rich, generative, and educative three days! We came away with a host of new strategies for leadership and facilitation at Windward and were filled with gratitude for the inspiring experience.

Responsive Teaching Conference
fulfill our mission of offering a dynamic and engaging education in a nurturing and inclusive community, we must engage in responsive teaching. Furthermore, we saw clearly how engaging in this work was the next logical step for us as a school.
Written by conference attendee: STELLA BEALE Associate Director of Upper School Embracing revolutionary ideas in pedagogy and best teaching practices is a major focus of Windward’s Strategic Plan. It is a priority for faculty members to find the most accessible way to learn for each of our students. Last July, seven of us filed into an auditorium on the campus of the University of Virginia, settled into our seats, and waited. Outside, the heat was sweltering, if not oppressive. Inside, the air-conditioning hummed and, within moments, Carol Ann Tomlinson—a professor of education at the university and the foremost authority in the nation on Differentiated Instruction, also known as Responsive Teaching—reminded us that there are many different entry ways to success. The purpose of our week with her was to begin to build a framework for thinking about “defensible differentiation” in our schools and classrooms, with an emphasis on the goals we had for our growth, individually and/or as a school. By the end of the day, I was sold. By the end of the week, I felt more strongly than ever that this is the direction we need to go at Windward. As Emily Dawe, Paola De Castro, Camar Robinson, Lisa Weinstein, Melanie Arias, Sabrina Erickson, Becky Carter, and I gathered each evening we found ourselves full of ideas about how we might adapt our practices and courses in order to better serve our students. We all felt keenly that in order to
Responsive teaching is the natural outgrowth of our learning and work as a school over the last two years related to the neuroscience of growth and engagement, understanding by design, formative assessment, and connections between teachers and students. In the year that has passed since we had the opportunity to attend this transformative conference, we have continued to meet to brainstorm, share practices, puzzle through questions, and commune with one another. We have also encouraged the faculty as a whole to begin implementing these practices and have shared best practices and how they have worked for our classrooms. This is only the beginning, but I know we all feel empowered by the ways in which Carol offered us a language and a framework to describe and do that which we fundamentally understand as “good teaching.”

WHY we give Parents of Alumni Laura Ornest and Rick Leslie Our choice to be members of the Windward community beginning when our son, Harrison ’17, entered the Seventh Grade was tied to the School’s core values and personal touch. Reflecting on the total six-year experience shortly after his graduation, our impression remains the same. Windward was a place for Harrison to be Harrison. We recognize that there are different challenges that each Upper School student faces and are deeply grateful for the accessibility of the Windward faculty and staff when it came to Harrison’s time on campus. In this time, Harrison thrived in areas ranging from music, to cross-country and track, and bioengineering. He was consistently engaged by teachers whom we view as passionate educators with the ability to see students, meet them where they are, and inspire. Matching resources to learning needs and anticipating areas with potential obstacles were among the many strengths we found to be unique to the Windward community. This unparalleled experience is one that extended beyond our son. As Current Parents, we annually hosted the Food for the Soul Party Book event at our architectural home in Rustic Canyon and were touched when asked to continue the tradition as Parents of Alumni. For each of the past six years, roughly 35 members of the Windward community joined us for a catered meal and music performed by Bruce
Eskovitz (often with a guest). On this evening, whether close friends or not, this group shared a real bond over a mutual appreciation for Windward and a love of music and food. We have also gained friends through Harrison and his passion for connecting people. This link introduced us to a family with two students supported through Windward’s Financial Aid program. After getting to know these students and their family, we knew that giving to Financial Aid was an important choice to make. We believe in giving back and feel very fortunate in having the ability to send a child to independent school. Now, more than ever, we feel that we should do as much as we can to help others find this experience and to help the School in its mission statement, which includes many high-value philosophies.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT
WHY we give Philanthropy and volunteerism are two crucial cornerstones of a growing school community. So many generous families and organizations have contributed to our culture of giving and helped Windward reach new heights. We celebrate all those who have given their time and support to the School in a multitude of ways and salute all volunteers who have helped lead over the years. This year, we asked Current Parents Nadine Bell and Bart Williams to share their family’s story of giving.
Current Parents NADINE BELL AND BART WILLIAMS For our family, supporting Windward has meant both volunteering our time and contributing to the School’s bottom line in ways that are truly meaningful to us. Volunteering with the Annual Fund, Spring Event, and CulinArt Food Services has been an excellent way to meet other Windward parents, faculty, staff, and administrators and to be able to be on campus just a bit. Supporting Financial Aid is a priority for our family because we want Windward to have a socioeconomically, racially, and
ethnically diverse student population that reflects the world we live in. Supporting teacher development is, selfishly, vital to us, because we want our son’s teachers to be as motivated and enthusiastic as possible. We will support the School’s Innovation Campaign—even though it will not necessarily benefit our son, it will benefit the Windwardians of the next “generation”—because we want to “pay it forward” as a way to honor those individuals whose financial contributions and sacrifices have made Justin’s current Windward experience, and our own educations, possible.

HONOR ROLL
Only with the dedicated support of our Windward Fund volunteers were we able to celebrate a year of increased giving from the community. Thank you to these volunteers for loaning their time and remaining committed to the Fund throughout the year. Your efforts are making a daily impact on campus.

LETTER FROM ALUMNI COUNCIL CO-PRESIDENTS
Dear Alumni and Friends, At the close of this noteworthy year for alumni giving, we wanted not only to thank you for your increase in participation and support, but also to share how the strength of Windward’s alumni community continues to grow. However long ago our graduation was, each of us left Windward with something special. It may be as simple as the memory of kind words from a teacher during a time of need or as big as the ability to approach problems from many vantage points. Our spirit is tied to this exceptional place, which instills confidence, creativity, and intellectual curiosity in our students along with providing a nurturing experience that is unique among secondary independent schools in L.A. The community that helped us grow into adults is simultaneously fostering a community of opportunities for us to tap into as professionals, throughout all stages of our careers. As an Alumni Council, we are working hard to engage you in this value-added element of the Windward experience and have narrowed our focus to hosting affinity-geared networking events, where alumni can continue to derive benefit from the school community. We strive to keep you connected. It is because of your ongoing support that our alumni community has been able to grow and thrive in these ways. Your annual gifts supporting our Alumni Financial Aid Grant—as part of the Windward Fund—have enabled the School to maintain our focus on diversity and inclusivity, while also supporting alumni programming. Regardless of merit, intelligence, and strong work ethic, at some point someone took a chance on you, gave you a break, or helped you along. It is important to acknowledge this favor and pass it on. Complete the circle. We give for many reasons. We give partly in the spirit of leaving things better than we found them, especially things that matter. Windward matters. Our hearts are at Windward. We’re all in. Emily Kovner Moss ’91 Alumni Council Co-President Rob Pasnau ’85 Alumni Council Co-President

REPORT ON PHILANTHROPY
WHY I give KEN SALKIN ’86 Two things drive me to give: my parents’ example and my personal experience with getting to the right learning environment as a kid. I was taught from a very young age that, when it comes to giving, you get way more out than you put in. Later, I learned that these gains come through connecting with people and forming deeper relationships, which enrich your life. I was lucky to have attended, and now be a Board of Trustee member at, Park Century School, where I first learned about how the right fit can change the shape of a child’s future. This notion was reinforced through many experiences at Windward, and one truly defining moment endures. One day, back when Shirley Windward was around and I really needed it, she looked me in the eye, gave me a hug, and said: “You’ll figure it out.” That may sound kind of cliché now, but to me, figuring out the thing you’re passionate about and doing it is very much a part of Windward. This is perhaps the most unique and resilient quality of the School. Had I been at another school, I might not have called Shirley “Shirley” and she might not have known me well enough to recognize that I needed her wisdom and encouragement.
Personal connection and attention to the individual student is still a part of the Windward experience. I have worked with students on a few occasions over the years, discussing startups with a Math class and the Investment Club. These glimpses into the current life of Windward allowed me to see kids actively developing their passions. I stay involved, and encourage you to also, because this School is a wonderful, supportive community where students have the opportunity to discover and pursue their passions.

WAYS GIVING OF
Windward relies on charitable gifts above and beyond tuition income to support school programs. With your annual contributions, we can continue to elevate the special attributes that set Windward apart. We solicit tax-deductible donations through various initiatives that help the School and allow families to give based on their ability. Cash, Check, or Credit Card Your cash gift is tax deductible within the guidelines established by the IRS. Cash gifts can be made by check or can be charged to your Visa, MasterCard, or American Express. Credit card gifts can be made online at www.windwardschool.org/give or by contacting Susan Marx at (424) 289-1004.
Recurring Gifts Windward School provides the opportunity to give at any frequency. If you’re interested in giving a monthly, quarterly, or yearly donation, visit our website at www.windwardschool.org/give. Matching Gifts Gift matching is a way to increase the value of your own charitable gift through your employer. Corporate Matching Gift programs
are a great way to double or triple your gift. You can check with your employer or on the Windward website at www.windwardschool.org/ waystogive to determine if your gift is eligible for matching. Simply send us the appropriate paperwork from your employer’s Human Resources Department, and your gift to Windward School will be matched according to your company’s guidelines. Securities A gift to Windward of appreciated securities entitles the donor to a charitable deduction for its full current market value, without paying the capital gains tax on the appreciation, which would be required if the securities were sold for personal gain. Stock transfer instructions follow and can also be found online at www.windwardschool.org/ waystogive.
