FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

A Letter from

Tom Gilder

T

his issue marks the first time in the School’s history that we are publishing a Summer magazine, as well as the first time we are combining the magazine with our Annual Report on Philanthropy. The changes go hand in hand.

Our students, faculty, staff, and alumni are engaged in so many innovative and inspirational endeavors that we found two issues of Windward Magazine a year were not enough to tell their compelling stories. Meanwhile, as you’ll see in this issue, the growth of the School’s programs is continuing apace, giving us more essential stories to share with our community. Our Service Learning and Social Entrepreneurship program is growing in scope and substance as more of our students find worthwhile ways to make a difference in the world. Our dynamic STEAM offerings continue to inspire our students to innovate and create, leveraging our exceptional faculty and facilities. Our Performing and Visual and Media Arts programs have reached new heights, thanks to the vision and expertise of our extraordinary faculty and the enthusiasm and dedication of our student-artists. Our Athletics program also is at the top of its game, providing boundless opportunities for our scholar-athletes to pursue excellence on the field and the court as they further their personal growth. And all across Los Angeles this summer, students and alumni engaged in high-level internships in a wide range of industries through our burgeoning Windward at Work program.

Everywhere I look, the campus is alive with the excitement of learning and all the possibilities that come with it. Of course, we could not accomplish all that we do as a school without the widespread support of our community, for which we are profoundly grateful. This support is celebrated in our 2017-18 Report on Philanthropy, which begins on Page 19. The heartfelt generosity of our donors helped us accomplish many meaningful things this last year. We deepened our commitment to Diversity and Inclusivity through our Financial Aid program, which provides life-changing opportunities to qualified students from all backgrounds. We funded professional development trips for faculty through our Research and Development program, providing teachers with new inspiration and enthusiasm to infuse into their classrooms. Our classrooms themselves became more finely calibrated to the needs of our 21st century students thanks to upgrades made possible through the Program Enhancements fund. But above all, this generous support from our donors allowed us to continue to uphold the educational promise we make to each and every Windward student every day: to provide a dynamic, engaging education within a nurturing, inclusive community. Thank you for helping us keep that promise. TOM GILDER Head of School

S ERV I C E LE A R N I N G Closing the Gender Gap in Innovation Windward’s newest Service Learning project stems from students’ love for math and science

Around this time last year, Elyse Forman ’19 During the spring semester, the students and Kate Stackel ’19 found themselves partnered with two of Windward’s chatting about their passion for STEM neighboring schools, Richland Avenue (science, technology, engineering, and Elementary and Walgrove Elementary. math) and the gender inequality they were seeing in the field. “Girls have proven equally competent in STEM fields, and I wanted to find a way to But the conversation didn’t end there. impart confidence and hope in young girls The students took it a major step forward. who dream of pursuing careers in STEM,” Eager to bring these topics to young said Elyse. “I was lucky enough to find girls, Elyse and Kate applied for and were mentors along the way who pushed me to awarded the 2018 Julie Beren Platt Teen voice my opinions even in classrooms in Innovation Grant for their proposed project, which I was the only girl, and I hope to give Girls in STEM, to empower Third to Fifth these girls the space they need to build their Grade girls through interactive math and confidence.” science activities. One of the main goals of the project was to build a lasting relationship between the Windward student mentors and elementary students. Each mentor worked with the same group of three to six students for the entirety of the program and served as a role model for the girls. “We are so thankful for the mentors who committed two hours of their time each week, and it was bittersweet to watch the goodbyes between the mentors and their students on the last day of class,” said Elyse. Elyse and Kate were more than thrilled with the outcome of the pilot semester and look forward to running the program again in the 2018-19 school year. “The most fulfilling part of the program is hearing about all of the girls’ aspirations,” said Kate. “With our help, I hope they have blossomed into ambitious young girls. I’ve heard many of them share how they hope to be mathematicians, doctors, and engineers in the future. They are so eager to learn and are excited about their goals. I have tried to learn from their outlook on life.”

SERVICE LEARNING

Windward Partners with Mar Vista Elementary on Big Sunday On May 6, Windward families joined forces with the Mar Vista Elementary School community for a Big Sunday project to install water-wise gardens on campus. More than 80 volunteers from both schools worked from morning until early afternoon to weed, plant, and mulch beautifully designed garden beds featuring drought-tolerant plants and flowers.

“This is our third consecutive year in partnership with our friends at neighborhood schools—and one that we hope will continue,” said Daniel Kleckner ‘19, Big Sunday Youth Board Member. The day featured music, food, and lots of smiles and goodwill.

Special thanks to all of the Windward families, students, faculty, and staff, as well as our Mar Vista neighbors who helped make the day a huge success.

Daniel participated in his first Big Sunday project in elementary school and has been doing projects with the organization ever since. “I enjoy beautification projects like the one organized in collaboration with Windward because one can see the before/after of a school and the power of transformation,” said Daniel.

HAVANA NIGHTS The Riviera Country Club offered the perfect setting for the Windward community to celebrate Havana Nights, an evening of dancing, mojitos, cuban sandwiches, and amazing auction items.

F

rom the straw hats to the chocolate cigars, the evening was truly one to remember and would not have been possible without our amazing Windward community. Together, we raised funds to support our Research and Development and Financial Aid programs.

The Art of Expression On May 6, the Windward community joined the Visual and Media Arts Department at Santa Monica Airport’s Barker Hangar for the School’s second annual National Art Honor Society Off-Campus Exhibition.

T

he National Art Honor Society is a nationally recognized organization with over 45,000 student members across North America. The offcampus show was created by students to showcase student talent, and to provide a space to allow students to express themselves freely. It is also a welcoming event to the new members of NAHS and a farewell and celebration to the graduating Seniors. For many, this show is the first opportunity for these young artists to display their work in a professional gallery setting. Thanks to the hard work of studentartists, the show was a great success and well-received.

VISUAL AND MEDIA ARTS

Beyond the Streets by Marin Willick ’19 and Tony de los Reyes, Visual and Media Arts Teacher

I

t is strange to visit an art gallery to see street art, especially when the surrounding streets themselves are filled with great examples of graffiti and murals. However, the exhibition “Beyond the Streets” (downtown LA May 6-July 6) offered a model of seeing artists such as Banksy and Shepard Fairey in the same influential light as Vincent van Gogh and Jackson Pollock. It was a dynamic experience that was enjoyable, informative, and inspirational. The largest exhibition of its kind, this encyclopedic experience offered street art from different eras and locations under one roof. Windward students from AP Art History and Studio 1 traveled to the exhibition to consider the urban landscape as a space for critical assessment and to understand the production of graphics bent on the disruption of common, urban spaces. This idea of bringing art to the masses in an unorthodox way is best seen in the graffiti of New York City subway cars. In the 1980s, artists like Fab Five Freddy and Futura 2000 were DJs as well as painters, and their designs were inspired by the music and clubs of their time. Without photographers like Gordon Matta-Clark, Jim Prigoff, and Henry Chalfant, these incredible murals would be forever lost and forgotten.

As well as archived work and materials (actual stencils from the 1980s!) from artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring, the exhibition included internationally known contemporary artists such as Takashi Murakami and Retna. The visit coincided with a Studio 1 assignment of designing easily massproduced images with personal interests on social and political issues. Some students chose to critique the current administration, animal testing, climate change, or the proliferation of guns. Not all subjects were “heavy”—some students simply developed an unusual, intriguing image just for the sake of disrupting a passerby’s gaze. After sketching out multiple preliminary ideas on paper, students edited a single image, which was then refined on an iPad. The idea was to make artworks that could be translated into multiple prints, stencils, vinyl appliques, or even murals. After all, art doesn’t have to be on a clean white wall—sometimes the best exhibitions occur where you least expect them.

THE CHALLENGE A Glimpse into Challenge-Based Learning at Windward

ach year, Windward Seventh Graders work on projects to improve the environment in their communities using challenge-based learning, a collaborative learning experience in which teachers and students work together to take action by proposing real-world solutions to problems.

The Class of 2023 was challenged to implement a positive solution in the community by advancing, engineering, or creating a solution that: • increases disaster resilience of cities and communities, or • improves responsible consumption, production patterns, and waste mitigation. CBL is a great way to introduce new students to Windward’s model of active learning and inquiry-based science. It also teaches students the skills for successful collaboration that they will carry with them throughout their years at Windward. The students’ months of hard work culminated with a project showcase at Windward’s annual Community Forum this past May.

2 1 ST CENTURY LEA R NING

MINIMESTER 2018 Every Spring, Eighth Graders participate in three days of innovative, hands-on, cross-disciplinary study in an area of interest outside the classroom.

Government in Action: Washington, D.C. Trip

California’s Sea Life: Central Coast, California

The Government in Action Minimester involved 60 students traveling to Washington, D.C., where they had the opportunity to meet with and ask questions of Congressman Ted Lieu (DCA). While there, they were also treated to a private tour of the Capitol, including a chance to see the view from the Speaker of the House’s balcony.

The Monterey trip was a great exploration of marine life and the biodiversity along the California coastline. Students traveled to Morro Bay, San Luis Obispo, Solvang, and Monterey. They got up close and personal with the wildlife via kayak and boat, hiked the rocky coastline, and participated in a behind-the-scenes workshop at the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

During a visit to Arlington to see the Changing of the Guard ceremony, students witnessed a special wreathlaying ceremony by a foreign dignitary. Other highlights included viewing Pulitzer Prize-winning photographs at the Newseum, as well as visits to the Library of Congress, the Supreme Court, the Holocaust Museum, Ford’s Theater, and the Smithsonian museums.

Art, Food, and Culture of Los Angeles Throughout this Minimester, students visited a variety of LA neighborhoods and toured a wide range of iconic cultural institutions including the Huntington Library and Gardens, the Getty, the Pasadena Playhouse, the Broad, Grand Central Market, and Universal Studios. While on site, students took photos, made movies, and participated in scavenger hunts.

Exploring the Power of Project Based Learning

T

By Tiffaney Hughes, Math Teacher

his past June, with support from the Windward Fund’s Research and Development program, I attended the Buck Institute for Education (BIE) Project Based Learning Conference in Napa Valley, Calif. PBL World is not like other conferences that have a variety of short sessions by many different presenters—it’s more like an institute, where participants go through a continuous multi-day experience. All workshops are three days and conducted by expert National Faculty or BIE staff, and focus on BIE’s model for Gold Standard PBL. Participants in all workshops develop a project plan they can actually use when they return home. Project based learning prepares students for academic, personal, and career success by having them work on projects for an extended period of time that engage them in solving a real-world problem or answering a complex question.

12 - W I N D WA R D F U N D AT W O R K

On the first day of the conference, I was hesitant that I could make a truly authentic project that students can connect to without giving up on teaching certain standards. By the end of the third day, I had collaborated with other teachers to brainstorm on project ideas, discussed how to incorporate my standards, and had outlined a protocol project that I plan on using in Algebra 1 this year. My project is all about getting around Los Angeles without a car. Students will need to research methods of public transportation, and I will use this concept to teach students how to set up and solve equations, inequalities, and systems of equations. They will be required to create and complete a final project presentation discussing scenarios for getting around Los Angeles on a budget and with limited time. I hope that my Algebra students enjoy it and learn more about getting around their city. My goal is to attend PBL World 2019 next Summer to revise my project and to create another project to use in 2020.

WINDWARD FUND AT WORK

A Residency at Anderson Ranch

By Tony de los Reyes, Visual and Media Arts Teacher

T

wice a year at Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Snowmass, Colo., 14 visiting artists from around the world are invited to make work each fall and spring. Sculptors, printmakers, woodworkers, ceramicists, new media artists, and painters such as myself converge for uninterrupted studio time and intimate conversations about each other’s practices. This spring, with support from the Windward Fund, I was extremely fortunate to take some time away from teaching and parenting in order to immerse myself in extended study. In 1966, prominent American raku ceramist Paul Soldner and his avant-garde peers planted the seeds for an arts center that was neither academic campus nor arts academy, but rather a place of artistic inquiry for its own sake. Today, with a sophisticated staff, magnificent studios, and workshops surrounded by mountain peaks, Anderson Ranch inspires each visiting artist to reconsider their work through experimentation, innovation, and conversation. Along with the residencies, an outstanding range of summer courses are open to the public, along with talks from renowned international artists.

Studio photographs courtesy of Anna Stonehouse for The Aspen Times

I came to Anderson Ranch to focus on my Border Theory series, work springing from my interest in the US/Mexico border. The topic is in my blood: My great-grandmother, Natalia, crossed the border in Texas to give birth to my grandfather. And as a native Angeleno, I’ve always been conscious of the proximity of the border and its immense cultural, social, and political effects. Some of the paintings I made there were based on photographs I took in Jacumba, Calif., looking through the steel border posts into Jacumbé, Mexico. Where two small towns were once one, the viewer shares my perspective about a region that is often talked about, yet rarely experienced. The residency allowed me to work with these images, translating them through oil paint and silkscreen. This fall I will be co-teaching a new Senior Capstone course with Ashley Goodman, Director of Service Learning and Social Entrepreneurship, on social justice, and we plan on incorporating immigration/migration issues into the curriculum. The sabbatical gave me the space to consider meaningful ways to introduce the topic to students, and inspire them to dig as deeply into their own projects as I do with mine.

BOARD OF TRUSTEES

THANK YOU to our

DEPARTING TRUSTEES PAT DUNCAN The proud parent of two Windward alums— Collin ’10 and Shannon ’14—Pat Duncan departs the Board following seven years of service. While working in her position as the Senior Vice President, Legal Affairs at Home Box Office, Pat also actively recruited, trained, and worked with new trustees. Her work in reviewing and revising the Board’s bylaws played an essential part in defining the Board’s vision for the School, as did her active role in furthering the scope of Windward’s Diversity and Inclusivity Parent Committee. We are deeply grateful for Pat’s years of contribution to the Windward community.

RANDYE SOREF Randye Soref departs the Board after an impressive seven years of service. As an active member of the School’s Finance Committee, Randye played a critical role in overseeing the Board’s spending for plant and curriculum enhancements. Her recommendations enabled Windward to continue to compete at the highest level with other top-ranked college preparatory schools in the Los Angeles area. In addition to raising Windward alumna Jolie Abrams ’15, currently attending Brandeis University, Randye also co-chaired the School’s Annual Fund with her husband, Michael, for many years. Her work with the Advancement Team, as well as the Windward community at large, is greatly appreciated.

CHRISTY KWON KREISBERG While she departs the Board of Trustees at the close of her service as the 2017-18 Parent Guild President, Christy will continue her engagement with Windward in many ways. A highlight of Christy’s Presidency was the creation of the new Spirit Wear Committee, which helped bring spirit and camaraderie to the School. She also was a mentor to each of the members of the Executive Committee, encouraging each member to get involved in committees that were sometimes outside of their comfort zones and to do their very best to create greater opportunities for Parent Guild volunteers. As her daughter, Lily ’18, continues her education at Boston College, Christy will serve as Past President on the Parent Guild Executive Committee. We thank Christy for her enthusiastic efforts to create an inclusive community and to help parents make meaningful connections on campus.

DAN GINSBERG Dan Ginsberg has served the Windward community in many capacities, both as a parent—to Jack ’16 and Stella ’17—and as a major asset to Windward’s vision. Dan’s insight and guidance played an integral role in the School’s fundraising efforts, helping to secure funding and support for invaluable School initiatives. Along with his daughter, Stella, who served on the Strategic Planning Committee, Dan’s work with the Advancement Team helped the School to maintain its premier educational environment. We thank Dan for his three years on the Board.

TONY RUBIN As Co-Chair of the Advancement Committee and Major Gifts Committee, departing member Tony Rubin played a large role in shaping the Board as it’s known today. First joining the Board in 2010, Tony’s involvement was broad in its scope. In addition to his Co-Chair duties, Tony also served on the Executive and Finance and Operations Committees. He was also a Capital Campaign Co-Chair, supporting both programmatic growth and the improvement of Windward School facilities. The proud father to Windward alumni Jacob ’10 and Gena ’15, Tony’s work over the last seven years helped to ensure a bright future for Windwardians of the present and beyond.

MARVIN SUOMI Marvin Suomi leaves the Board following a successful four year tenure. As a member of the School’s Committee on Trustees, Marvin assisted in the management and perpetuation of the Board, including reviewing proposed bylaw revisions and contributed to the selection and nomination of Board members and officers. He also helped to grow Windward’s Salon Speaker Series, a program committed to bringing a variety of vibrant and thought-provoking guest speakers to campus on subjects relating to history, art, science, literature, and media. We thank Marvin for his time and service.

PARENT GUILD 2017-18 EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE

PRESIDENT: Christy Kwon Kreisberg PAST PRESIDENT: Chris Smale VICE PRESIDENT: Michelle Taub (Seventh-Eighth), Sheri Green (Ninth-10th), Nadine Bell (11th-12th) SOCIAL: Rachel Edwards SECRETARY: Christie Carney TREASURER: Elinor Lewis MEMBER AT LARGE: Lisa Provisor

All Windward parents are members of the Parent Guild. The Parent Guild’s volunteer programs strengthen the Windward community, enriching the social, cultural, educational, and fundraising activities of the School. Every volunteer’s time is appreciated and meaningful; special thanks goes out to those who led the Parent Guild in 2017-18.

PARENT

Perspective MICHELLE TAUB

2018-19 Parent Guild President, Parent of Hannah ‘20 and Judah ‘23 When my daughter, Hannah, first arrived at Windward, I thought I knew what to expect. The independence and self-reliance she would learn in Middle School and Upper School would mean that I would only have brief glimpses into student life at Windward, and I would likely only meet other parents in passing. If my connection to Windward depended on what my teenager willingly shared with me, I thought my role at school would be marginal at best. Little did I know that through volunteering for Parent Guild committees, I would develop a vibrant connection to the Windward community. I started tentatively, signing up to be a team parent on the Middle School Soccer team (familiar territory), and immediately bonded with the parents of Hannah’s closest friends. I then volunteered to work on the Homecoming Committee and met parents with children older than Hannah who gave me invaluable advice about everything from when I should fill out a planned absence form to helping Hannah balance school, soccer and her increasing interest in hanging out with her Windward friends. I volunteered on the Faculty and Staff Appreciation Committee and not only worked with incredibly creative parents (and collected new and exciting party planning tips), but I also met many of the teachers and staff at Windward whose names I had seen on Hannah’s course lists and on schoolwide emails. Through volunteering at Windward, I have made new friends and found mentors. I have made connections with people who have helped me navigate the sometimes choppy waters of parenting a teenager, who have encouraged me to try things I didn’t think I was good at and who just make me laugh. Volunteering on Parent Guild committees allows me to be part of Windward’s robust campus life and to be part of its warm and welcoming community.

2017-18

FINANCIAL AID Windward School’s commitment to diversity and inclusivity is an integral part of our educational fabric and is inextricably linked to the mission of the School. Windward is dedicated to creating a welcoming community that embraces the individuality of each of our members, encourages students to develop a deep understanding of identity, and fosters an inclusive environment where diversity is both recognized and honored. A robust Financial Aid program makes a Windward education possible for qualified students regardless of financial ability and is critical to ensuring economic diversity and attracting talented students of all backgrounds. Whether it’s alumni donating to the Alumni Financial Aid Grant, senior parents donating to Financial Aid through the Senior Class Gift, or the broader community supporting Financial Aid at Windward’s annual Spring Event, investment in Financial Aid pays dividends that are truly life-changing.

$2.5MM+

Allison & Bennett Rosenthal

$1MM+ The Innovation Campaign will transform the experience of every student on Windward’s campus. In Part 1, we will elevate all programs through the creation of the Academic Hub for Student Support and Engagement. The new buildings will add 11 active learning studios, a drawing and painting studio, and a graphic design lab, providing students ample space for creativity and collaboration. The Hub also will feature two Division Suites—for the Middle School and Prep Division Administrative teams—offering a central place for students to receive all the support they need to thrive during their crucial developmental years. In Part 2 of the Innovation Campaign, we will ensure our students develop critical 21st century skills through our Arts and Innovation Center. The Center will offer over 58,000 square feet of flexible and technologically advanced space to support a wide range of presentation formats that are on par with well-known professional venues, allowing us to take our visual, media, and performing arts programs to a new level. The Center’s Sky Deck will serve as an incubator for hands-on, student-driven learning. We thank the following families for their commitment to progress and their investment in the burgeoning vision of our campus and programming. With their leadership, we have reached $12.7 million in pledges and 100% participation from the Board of Trustees. 32 - R EP O RT O N PH I L A N T H R O P Y

REPORT ON PHILANTHROPY

Donors play a critical role in the success of Windward’s Innovation Campaign. We are pleased to share the stories of a few of Windward’s esteemed donors.

ALLISON AND BENNETT ROSENTHAL Parents of Brooke ’15, Miles ’18, and Tess ’19

When Allison and Bennett Rosenthal’s daughter Brooke ’15 was a student at Windward, she was a member of the first Windward class to benefit from the Science, Dance, and Music building, erected in 2009. The 14,000 square foot building houses a chemistry lab, physics lab, robotics lab, dance studio, seminar room, music studio, as well as several contemporary classrooms.

Allison and Bennett to make a gift to the Innovation Campaign. “To be able to have other students benefit from our contribution the way our children have benefited from the contributions made by others brings it full circle,” Allison says. Allison and Bennett have designated their Innovation Campaign gift to the new state-of-the-art proscenium theater, which will be named in their honor. The Allison and Bennett Rosenthal Theater will serve as a stunning anchor of the 58,000 square foot Arts & Innovation Center, which will dramatically transform the educational experience of every student on Windward’s campus.

The impact that the custom-built, eco-friendly facilities had on Brooke’s experience at Windward was profound, enriching her experience as a student and supporting her intellectual curiosity and personal growth. Brooke—a Windward valedictorian award recipient—advanced to the University of Pennsylvania, where she will graduate from in 2019 and receive a master’s degree in Integrated Product Design in 2020.

The fact that Allison and Bennett have chosen to contribute to the School’s new theater is only fitting given that Miles and Tess have both been active and passionate participants in Windward’s Performing Arts program. Miles— who is starting in NYU’s game design program this fall—was cast in all eight of Windward’s Upper School performances and sang with the Chromatics, while Tess—who is spending her summer at a theater program at Northwestern University—has participated in five plays and musicals and has been a key member of Windward’s Improv Troupe.

It was their gratitude at having their oldest child—they are also parents to Miles ’18 and Tess ’19—take advantage of these exceptional facilities that led

“To be able to be a part of this campaign and contribute to Windward’s future is so important,” Allison says. “If people can pay it forward, it’s a great thing to do.” W I N D WA R D M A G A Z I N E - 33

JOYCE AND GEORGE SACHS Grandparents of Olivia Fishman ’20 and Teala Fishman ‘22

When Windward Grandparent George Sachs took a position at the University of Alabama Medical School in the early 1960s, his wife, Joyce—an AP English teacher—decided to start an integrated school with a few like-minded souls in Birmingham. The experience deepened Joyce’s appreciation for the transformative power education can have on individuals, as well as society as a whole. That appreciation grew further still when her granddaughter Olivia ’20 started at Windward in the Seventh Grade.

34 - R EP O RT O N PH I L A N T H R O P Y

“Coming from the background I did, I can see the value of everything that Windward has to offer,” she says. “The School has been able to combine many elements to support the emotional child, the academic child, the social child. It’s all there for them—whatever they choose.” Joyce has been particularly impressed that Windward has proven to be an equally excellent choice for her granddaughter Teala ’22. “Our granddaughters are very different young women,” Joyce says. “And yet they both have found an educational community that serves their needs the way Windward does. They’re very alert to children’s individual needs and do everything they can to help them feel comfortable and thrive and learn—all the things you hope for.” Joyce’s appreciation for the School’s physical spaces has been just as great. “When I saw the campus, I was just blown away,” she says. “I couldn’t believe it. I was so inspired.”

It’s that awe at what has already been accomplished at Windward that prompted Joyce and George to make a gift to the Innovation Campaign. “I felt the School had already proven itself and was ready for the next step,” Joyce explains. Joyce encourages other grandparents to take advantage of the opportunity to get involved by making a gift to the campaign. “A school that offers this type of growth for their grandchild is a real investment in their future,” she says. “You’re on the cusp of the future of education, and this is a chance to be part of something really valuable. Space designed to serve the child—you can’t ask for more than that.”

CHRISTINE AND JORDAN KAPLAN Parents of Claire ‘19

As the CEO and President of Douglas Emmett Inc., a REIT traded on the New York Stock Exchange, Jordan Kaplan knows a thing or two about getting good value from an investment. When making charitable gifts to an organization, there are two important ingredients, Jordan says: stable, effective leadership and a track record of efficiently and successfully deploying the donations. The fact that both elements were firmly in place at Windward led Jordan and his wife, Christine—parents of Claire ’19—to make an early gift to the School’s Innovation Campaign.

“This is not an act of blind trust,” Jordan explains. “It is trust that we have in the cultural incubator Windward provides to shepherd our children to young adulthood.” The campaign will comprise two parts: Part 1 will include an Academic Hub and Student Support Center, along with a renovated Performing Arts Wing; Part 2 will feature an Arts & Innovation Center that will offer presentation and performance spaces that are on-par with university and professional venues. The fact that Claire, as a Senior, will not be able to make full use of the new program-driven facilities is not only irrelevant, Jordan says, but a motivating factor in making their gift. “What we have at Windward is the result of parents, who almost 50 years ago made a commitment to create a valuable community asset that can be passed on for the benefit of others,” he says. “They made substantial contributions

to an extended capital campaign that transformed the School. What makes that so remarkable is that their kids would never benefit from the transformation. That is the kind of selfless act that establishes the culture of a society and sets an example for our children.” Jordan and Christine’s own children— sons Skyler and Jace in addition to daughter Claire—have seen their parents make philanthropy a focus of their life. The Kaplans have given generously to many local causes, including Palisades High School, the UCLA Foundation, St. John’s Health Center, LA Waterkeeper, and Sound Mind Sound Body, a UCLA charity dedicated to fighting childhood obesity. Jordan encourages others to make a campaign gift and support what he calls “the best-run school in the Los Angeles metro area.” He says: “Your gift to the Innovation Campaign will be a source of pride as you consider the ways in which you have made the world better.”

ALUMNI

The Alumni Council set a goal to raising $100,000 from 100 alumni donors in our 2017-18 Fiscal Year, both of which were achieved thanks to the generosity of our alumni community. The 114 alumni who gave over $102,000 to the Windward Fund, or specifically to the Alumni Financial Aid Grant to support need-based financial aid, demonstrates their belief in the value of a Windward education and their commitment to supporting their alma mater. Alumni recognize that while Windward’s campus has grown and curriculum has evolved since 1971, the dynamic education and nurturing community that Shirley instilled continues to thrive. Thank you to all alumni for your unwavering support of our students, faculty, and School as a whole.

In bringing this farcical comedy to life, the students dove deep in the world of improv and physical comedy. Set in the 1880s, the theater transformed into New York, and the characters came to life with opulent, period costumes. Windward’s actors and tech crew worked collaboratively in the rehearsal process for performances that delighted audiences. Windward’s Spring Dance Concert served as the culminating event for Windward Dance, featuring largely student choreographic work from both new and experienced student artists. The evening included works by special guest artists Alyson Van and USC Glorya Kaufman International School of Dance student Jordan Johnson as part of a budding partnership with students of the world-renowned conservatory program and Windward Dance. The evening also included a solo from 2018 National Dance Educators Organization Artistic Merit, Leadership, and Academic Award Finalist Ani Rosen ‘19. Ani will have the opportunity to perform her solo at the national conference later this year. The April event boasted a full house with extra seating added in the Irene Kleinberg Theater to accommodate the large crowd. W I N D WA R D M A G A Z I N E - 49

On May 6, Windward’s talented Middle School and Upper School music ensembles took the stage in the annual Spring Concert, where they played and sang a mix of Latin, jazz, and rock ‘n’ roll.

Windward’s Fall Musical, “Chicago,” also received nominations in eight categories for the 2018 Jerry Herman Awards—tied for the most nominations of any high school in Los Angeles County. Windward won two awards: “Best Musical Staging and Choreography” and “Best Technical Crew.” Hannah Kanter ’18, who starred as Velma Kelly in the production, flew to New York City in late June to take part in the prestigious “Jimmy Awards” at The Minskoff Theater. Hannah won the award for “Best Performance in an Ensemble” and also received a scholarship towards her college tuition. “What makes this truly a full experience was this production was honored for the hard work both on-stage and off-stage,” said James Patric Moran, Director of Windward Musicals. “I am so proud of our entire team. Windward Theater is moving forward and stands toe-to-toe in the same arena as nationwide performing arts high schools. This is a major step forward and a testament to the hard work by both the administration and our talented and dedicated students.” 50 - W I N D WA R D N E T W O R K

indward’s Spring Musical, Disney’s “Aladdin Jr.,” pushed forth Windward’s Middle School program on all levels. Not only did it sell out in record time, but the beautifully lit stage, hand-crafted props, and vibrant costumes made it the most dazzling musical in the School’s history.

The Performing Arts department teamed up with Director of STEAM Simon Huss and Robotics students—spearheaded by Miguel Contreras-Aguirre ‘19—to create a carpet that appeared to fly and added the extra element of magic, which left the audiences with a sense of dream-like innocence. “Their contribution to our production made for a tremendous collaboration, and we are already looking for ways to team up again for the next production, ‘Wizard of Oz,’”said James Patric Moran, Director of Windward Musicals. “We have been bit by the collaborative bug, and it feels great. It truly created an environment where we felt that these types of unions enrich all our programs.” “This type of teamwork felt in all ways truly Windwardian. It made me proud to be a part of this elevated community.” W I N D WA R D M A G A Z I N E - 51

This Summer, through the Windward Network, 45 students and alumni participated in internships throughout Los Angeles in a variety of fields, including engineering, finance, medicine, and broadcast journalism. We would like to acknowledge the following organizations and mentors and thank them for supporting our interns and giving them the opportunity for “real world” work experience. Additionally, we applaud our interns for a successful summer! EAN ANSELMO D Mentor, CHLA, and Parent of Jaden ‘23 My biggest pleasure and surprise from this experience is the enthusiasm and excitement that Kate and Elyse had for participating and observing surgeries that I perform. They are both very inquisitive, not only about the mechanics and details of surgery, but also about the process of becoming a physician and the rigors of the education and training that it requires. It often reminds me of my own path and enthusiasm when I first realized that I wanted to pursue a career in medicine!

Rebecca Sanborn ’93 JOB TITLE: Country Director ORGANIZATION: Common Hope INDUSTRY: Nonprofit

25 years later, before and after a volcanic eruption What attracted you to the Peace Corps, and what lessons did you take away from your experience? I knew from a young age that I would join the Peace Corps once I graduated from university. At the time, I thought of myself as that type of person, even if at the time I didn’t know what that type of person was. Secretly, the Peace Corps was my ticket to Africa to see all those majestic animals— think “Out of Africa.” I didn’t end up going to Africa, or seeing elephants or rhinos. I did, however, meet my Robert Redford, aka Mauricio Vanheusden, and I came away with some key lessons that have influenced the way I work with people today. Once I got to Guatemala, nobody had ever heard of UC Berkeley, nor did they 54 - A L U M N I

have any idea what Political Economy could even begin to mean. Despite all that I had learned, I actually knew nothing in comparison to those that I was sent to work with. So I learned to be humble. For the first time, I met Americans from all over the country. While our country united us, I realized that we were more different from one another than we were from Guatemalans. It made me understand the vastness of the United States and that it was important to listen, learn, and not assume, no matter what language we speak or country we come from. Like most Peace Corps volunteers, I worked with families who in many cases had never left their village, barely grew enough to meet their daily caloric needs,

and were uneducated. Yet the children loved, lived, and laughed, regardless of their family’s struggles and despite what they did not have. I saw that poverty is not only about have and have-nots, it is a combination of circumstances and policies. While it may define people, it should not describe them. You cannot judge a book by its cover. Finally, I realized after my service that there was no way I could have been in the Peace Corps if it had not been for the support of my parents. Being an adult volunteer takes support and understanding, and a lot of plane tickets home.

ALUMNI

How did your Windward experience influence the person you are today? Windward was a place where we could push ourselves to learn and do more. Classes and course work were complete. You learned more than what was in the text—you learned why the text was there, who put it there, and why. Classrooms were small and engaging. As students, we were respected, and we respected one another. We made lunches for the homeless on Fridays. My experience at Windward made me a person who looked at things from more than one side, who learned to ask the question more than one way, and who learned to keep asking until I understood.

While serving at the Rainforest Alliance and focusing on sustainable agriculture globally, what was your role and why was the work meaningful to you? At the Rainforest Alliance I was a Senior Manager in Traceability, which relates to the integrity of products and their claims. I worked to ensure that any product making the claim or using the seal on their packaging did indeed come from farms and supply chains in which the Rainforest Alliance certificate had been earned. It was impactful to travel the entire world, throughout the supply chains of our most common commodities, to learn about all the people behind our coffees, chocolates, teas, flowers, fresh and processed fruits and to see how we all come together on the shelves of the stores. This changes how you see what is on the shelves of

Rebecca and retired Windward Science teacher Tom Haglund

Gelson’s, Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, and Costco. I learned how connected we are through supply chains and the impact we have by our purchasing decisions. Having integrity was important to me, and doing this via products that connect the world meant my work was having impact on a large scale. Please buy wisely when you can, it matters! What have you found to be some of the biggest challenges and opportunities with regard to supporting Guatemalan children in the classroom and helping Guatemalan families get out of poverty? The challenges to working in education and with children are two-fold: policies and parenting. Without clear policies, schools and education are not a priority. When they are not a priority, nobody can break the cycle of poverty. At the same time, when families are poor, they simply will prioritize working over studies. Parents set the example to work over study, to survive over dream, eke out a living over earning one, to survive vs. sustain and, thus, the pattern continues. Education breaks these cycles; therefore, providing access and keeping kids in school is an opportunity to do this.

Windward also taught me to take my studies seriously or you would not succeed. To be committed and reliable, to get the job and work done. It was not an easy ride, you had to study, to work, and to engage. You had to ask questions and perform. Was there a particular Windward faculty member who had an influence on the work you’re doing now? In preparing for this interview, I learned that Tom Haglund retired at the end of last school year. Tom´s classes, Marine Biology and Environmental Science, influenced me to be interested in making a difference. He made me realize that science and ecology were how we and the world are all connected. He continued to influence me well after I graduated, through the trips he organized with his Senior classes where they implemented the Scientific Method via real data collection and research. He knew that to learn and to teach required inviting students to take what they were learning in the classroom and apply it to real life. He showed me that by respecting and challenging students, not only will they succeed, but they’ll become confident, critical thinkers. I am proud to call myself a Windward graduate and only hope that my children could follow in my footsteps.

What inspired you to found MSA Agency—the global leader in dance— and where do you see the future of MSA Agency in five to 10 years? When I was 14, my brother took me to dance class, and I met my mentor, Russell Clark. Julie McDonald owned Room to Move, the studio we took classes at. Later, she became an agent—the first person to represent dancers ever. As I grew older, it made sense for me to transition into something else, and she offered me a job working for her. Where do I see MSA in five to 10 years? My goal has always been to use the MSA name and legacy to create projects with my clients. I want to put the “Nike Swoosh” in dance. No one has done this yet—created a lifestyle brand for the dance community. There’s Lululemon, but that’s a fitness line, and there’s Capezio, but they are an old company with old product. I hope to leverage our relationships to create new opportunities for us and our clients. My camp is a small example of that. It’s an immersive dance intensive, and we are the only agency doing this. I am creating a platform and hiring our clients to teach. The clients you represent have directed or choreographed everything from Cirque du Soleil productions to television shows, such as “Mad Men” and “The Office.” What projects have most excited you and why? A year ago, I would be talking all about YouTube dance influencers—I even tried to sell a platform in this arena called “Danceamatic,” but we didn’t raise the money we needed. I got to know so many of the Instagram/YouTube dance stars, and I loved them until about a year ago. Honestly, now I find some of them way too ego-driven. This mentality has hurt the dance community in my opinion, and I do see people now realizing that just because you have a million “likes” doesn’t make you good, nor does it make you earn your place in this world. What really excites me now? When we meet someone who is incredibly talented and humble. People who value loyalty and longevity and who have a great sense of humor. I still am totally inspired by the new generation of dance content creators, but I also know the value of working your way up the ladder through mentorship. They both have tremendous value in the dance community.

Recently, I went on an inaugural voyage of a new Norwegian Cruise line. I never thought I would like a cruise, and I certainly dismissed those opportunities as not “real jobs,” but I can tell you the shows were good! I see a new opening here. Producers can create shows on ships and then sell them to tour! Think about it: Cruise ships almost always have brand-new technology. They have huge theaters, and they have a dedicated and promised full house every night. It’s a great place to incubate shows. Whereas on Broadway, most of the shows close within a few weeks. Ask me in a year if I still feel this way, but as of today, this thought excites and inspires me. I get very excited when I see new opportunities. Years ago, we only represented dancers and choreographers, but now we have people who were dancers and now executive produce TV shows like “American Idol,” “America’s Got Talent,” “World of Dance,” and “The Voice.” Seeing that transition is very exciting. How did your Windward teachers, and your Windward experience as a whole, influence the person you are today? I remember having such caring and nurturing teachers at Windward. It made my whole high school experience very special. I think having one-on-one attention and care from my teachers gave me a great foundation for when I deal with clients and producers and, in fact, everyone. One

thing I say to young dancers when we do auditions is to remember to be nice to everyone. You never know—the person standing right next to you now may hire you in the future. I also read a book from older successful people, and they said that kindness is the most important quality in life. The teachers at Windward always treated us with kindness. What type of advice would you give to students interested in pursuing dance or the arts as a career? Break the mold. Build your own lane. To me, the biggest stars always seem to be the misfits growing up. This is why I got so inspired by the social media stars. They were making their own content! That’s so cool to me, but now I see that to have a lasting career, you do need to know what teamwork means—and what I call “repeat business.” The people who have real careers are always asked back to work on other shows. Again, you can be the best, but if you aren’t great to work with, it won’t last long. Relationships are the most important component in making a longlasting career.
