The Parent Guild

Windward parents are automatically members of the Parent Guild. The Parent Guild’s volunteer programs strengthen the Windward community, enriching the social, cultural, educational and fundraising activities of the school. There are many opportunities, large and small, to get involved!

MA KI NG YO U R G IF T Donations made to Windward School are tax deductible within IRS regulations. Outright cash donations can be made with check or credit card (Visa or MasterCard). Windward welcomes your gift through a pledge – a formal statement of intention to make a gift to the School. With a pledge, you may complete your gift by making regular payments over time. All pledges to the Annual Fund must be fulfilled by the end of the fiscal year, June 30th; major gift pledges can be completed over a three to five year period. Donors also can make a donation with appreciated securities, which entitles the donor to a charitable deduction for its full current market value, without paying the capital gains tax on the appreciation, which would be required if the securities were sold for personal gain.

Advancement

Advancement Volunteers work with fellow parents to secure much needed philanthropic support for the school and help educate the parent body about the school’s exciting programs and initiatives. Approximately 60 volunteers work on the Annual Fund each year and many others are involved in capital and endowment fundraising and event planning, including Spring Event and the JFD Windward Golf Classic.

The Windward Network

The Windward Network leverages the collective wisdom and social networking of the entire Windward community to open doors, facilitate mentorships, and enhance the careers of our Windwardians. We encourage all members of the Windward community to participate in the Windward Network. There are so many ways to get involved, including having coffee with an alum, offering a student an internship, and speaking at an event.

Volunteering has without a doubt enriched our experience as Windward parents. Bob Clifford, father of Robbie ‘17

EDUCATING A CHILD REQUIRES MORE THAN AN OUTSTANDING FACULTY & CURRICULUM. You can make a positive and meaningful difference in your child’s education and in the life of our school community. The Windward education would not be the incredible experience that it is without the investments of gifts and time from our parents.

This guide is designed to share with you the opportunities for you to get involved in your child’s education. Your volunteerism and your philanthropy forge a partnership with your fellow families and the school that makes Windward the great educational institution that it is today.

It is our responsibility to ensure that this community continues to thrive for the next generation of families.

Major Gifts

Major Gifts, sometimes called Leadership Gifts, are large contributions, usually in the six-, seven- and eight-figures, that are used to make significant capital improvements to facilities and programs. Windward is deeply grateful to those with the ability to give and commitment to philanthropy who can step forward and set an example of generosity for the entire community. Major Gifts are typically made over a three to five year period.

Endowment Funds The Annual Fund supports our community by providing substantial funding for Financial Aid, Faculty Betterment and Program Enhancements. Tuition, alone, does not cover the actual cost of educating each student; gifts to the Annual Fund help bridge that gap. Like all independent schools, Windward relies on contributions to the Annual Fund every year from trustees, parents, alumni, grandparents, parents of alumni, faculty and staff.

Gifts to endowment are an investment in the long-term financial health of Windward School. Endowment Funds are held in long-term investments with the principal remaining untouched, which creates a permanent source of revenue for the school. An endowment fund is structured to grow over time through reinvestment of interest and dividends earned.

Most independent schools conduct capital campaigns once or twice per decade in order to meet needs the school cannot pay for out of tuition funds. Campaigns support major projects such as new campus construction and renovations to maintain state-of-the-art facilities. In addition, many campaigns include an endowment component designed to support facilities and programs long into the future. Thanks to Windward’s last Capital Campaign, completed in 2011, students today benefit from the programs and resources available in the Science, Dance & Music Center and the Center for Teaching & Learning.

Spring Event

Each year, the Parent Guild presents Windward’s Spring Event, the annual fundraiser and community builder. Proceeds from Spring Event benefit the Faculty Betterment and Financial Aid Programs, two top priorities for the school. Typically held in May, the event includes live and silent auctions.

Party Book

Party Book focuses on community, fun, and friendship. Throughout the year, Windward families host parties with a limited number of guests. Proceeds from the donations to attend are directed to the Faculty Betterment and Financial Aid Programs.

Planned Giving

The Bridge Circle was formed to honor those who desire to leave a lasting legacy and have included Windward in their estate plans. The Bridge Circle encourages donors to think beyond their lifespan to make sure that the mission and vision of Windward continues and thrives. There are a number of ways to include Windward in your estate plans, which could provide tax advantages for you, the donor. FOR MORE DETAILS PLEASE VISIT WWW.WINDWARDSCHOOL.ORG/PLANNEDGIVING
