Our emergence as a model for academic innovation did not happen by chance. - TOM GILDER, HEAD OF SCHOOL

am always pleased when our alumni families return to the Windward campus and remark with pleasant surprise about something new at the school that they have seen or heard about. This is particularly gratifying when they notice that something they may have suggested or worked on themselves, perhaps even as students, has been incorporated into our plans. In a community where innovation is prized and we continually strive to develop better practices for dynamic teaching and learning, the pace of progress at Windward is a key hallmark of a school culture that is unlike any other.
It may seem difficult to believe for today’s newest students, but a decade ago, Windward looked like - and in many ways was - a much different school than it is today. Most notably, the two magnificent buildings that house our Center for Teaching and Learning and our Science, Dance, and Music programs were still concepts on paper. Ten years ago, our faculty teams were immersed in deep research on the best practices for active learning, traveling across the country to visit universities and experts who could share emerging data and cuttingedge ideas. The best of those concepts were
brought home and used to develop the unique programs and facilities that have proven over time to be so important to the educational experiences of present-day Windward students.
As you can see, our emergence as a model for academic innovation did not happen by chance. We worked incredibly hard to make the school stronger and we found success on this continuous journey thanks in large part to the strength of our many partnerships. Within our community, it has taken the tireless work of our talented faculty, the guidance of our committed Board of Trustees, and the dedication of our many generous supporters to reach the ambitious strategic goals that we set for ourselves. So, too, has our work with educational experts, businesses, and leading universities like Stanford and MIT helped set the stage for the further growth of programs that presently offer unique opportunities for Windward’s students and alumni. When I think back on these past ten years and our journey together, I am so thankful to all those who contributed. It has been a true community effort and we simply couldn’t have done it if we didn’t do it together.
Seeing the extent to which new spaces and programs have resonated with our students is rewarding because it means that the work we did was done right. Everyone who contributed to the growth of the school over the last decade should truly take pride in the success of these efforts.
Of all those who contributed to Windward’s growth over the last decade, special recognition is certainly due to Scott Jacks, who chaired the Board of Trustees during the critical Capital Campaign that helped turn many of yesterday’s dreams into the realities of today. Scott’s unexpected passing this fall saddened all who had the pleasure of working with him, knowing him, or simply benefiting from the longstanding personal commitment he had to educating young people. As we celebrate his life, we will also continue to find ways to build upon the collaborative successes that he helped forge over more than a decade as a model leader and committed Trustee.
One of my most crucial partners in that effort will certainly be our current Board Chair, Elliot Gordon ‘74, who gives so much of his time and talent to ensuring that the promise of Windward School is fulfilled and the goals
of its founders are realized. Elliot’s dedication and hard work - alongside the efforts of our other Trustees - are vital to the stewardship of Windward’s continued growth. Like those school leaders who came before them, the members of today’s Board of Trustees provide the strategic guidance that helps sustain Windward’s remarkable trajectory. I am grateful to have their support and guidance as we work together to make possible the ambitious goals we set for ourselves. Judging from the vast number of projects, initiatives, and priorities being worked on today, it should come as no surprise that the cycle of innovation continues at Windward and will ultimately benefit our students in ways we even now cannot fully foretell. Our faculty is again engaged in deep research in so many areas in order to find the next great transformative ideas that will come to represent Windward’s contributions to educational practice. These are the generative ideas that our graduating students may one day return to campus and themselves remark upon with wonder and admiration.
From my perspective, when I look at the next decade of Windward’s growth, I could not be

We know what our goals are, we know what we are are aiming to work on, and we know that it will take the same type of partnerships to again bring this research to reality. I am confident that with your help, and with our collaboration together, we will be able to accomplish amazing things. It’s going to be an exciting period at Windward, and I look forward to continuing on this journey with you. With deep gratitude,

2013-2014 REPORT ON PHILANTHROPY
From the Board Chair
W
hen I think back to the Windward School that I attended in the 1970’s - or even the one that my son, Daniel, graduated from in 2010 - I am amazed by the constant progress year after year to find new and better ways to educate students for the future. That commitment to innovate comes directly from the founding vision of Shirley Windward and Carl Parsons, and continues in countless forms today under the leadership of Tom Gilder and his team. Throughout the history of the school, strong partnerships have proven to be the foundation on which great ideas have been built. And it is only through the generosity of those in the community who have supported our initiatives, our programs, and our growth that these forward-thinking goals can continue to be achieved.
Each year, the publication of this report thanking donors, volunteers, and supporters of Windward provides us with a forum to highlight the work of those who made these vital contributions. Traditionally, it also provides us with the opportunity to welcome those new to the Board of Trustees while thanking our outgoing Trustees for their service

to the school. I would especially like to recognize departing Board members Hal Burroughs, Debbie Markiles, and Peter Smailes for their tireless efforts on Windward’s behalf in so many ways.
But nothing can adequately capture our indebtedness - and eternal gratitude - to Scott Jacks, who ended his 12-year career as a Windward Trustee just months before his sudden passing in October.
It is hard to know where to begin when we think about all that was accomplished at Windward during the time Scott served on the Board - a tenure that lasted well after his own children graduated from the school. During more than a decade of service, he sat on numerous committees and was instrumental in developing a Strategic Plan that helped guide Windward during one of its most vital periods of growth. He served the school as Board Chair from 2005-2010, and of many accomplishments during that time, his leadership of a successful $12 Million Capital Campaign is in itself a remarkable achievement - and something for our community to be proud of. That successful campaign is what allowed us to build the two state-of-the art

facilities that now form the centerpiece of our campus: The Center for Teaching and Learning and the Science, Dance, and Music Center. These buildings - and the programs nurtured within them transformed the school and have helped Windward flourish in ways that many could never have imagined.
It is impossible to fully encompass the impact of Scott’s service to Windward, much less the many other areas of his life to which he fully devoted himself. But it is important to remember the generous spirit with which he approached seemingly difficult goals. Like many great leaders, he believed that if something was worth attaining, it was achievable by working together. Scott’s footsteps are too large to ever fill, but his vision and wisdom guide me every
day in my own efforts as Board Chair. The Trustees and I are honored to carry his legacy forward by continuing to follow the strategic path he blazed and by further strengthening the partnerships that he took such care in building. So, too, do we look to the future in collaborating with our visionary Head of School. Tom Gilder’s commitment to Windward’s growth as a premier independent school and his dedication to constant innovation are unwavering. The physical transformation of Windward’s campus in just the last decade is matched in scale only by the dramatic evolution of our academic and extracurricular programs. With Tom’s expert direction and the dedication of our talented administration and faculty, the continuous cycle of researching the best educational
practices and developing cuttingedge facilities and programs to support them will again yield new opportunities for our students and new directions for Windward School.
I would like to thank each of you who has shared in this vision of what Windward can become and the kind of education we can provide to our students, both today and in the future. Your generosity has truly made the difference, and your support enables us to continue striving for excellence. Without any doubt, that is a worthy goal - and it is one that we will reach together. Sincerely,
Elliot Gordon ‘74

Remembering Scott Jacks T he Windward community lost one of its greatest supporters and friends in early October, when Dr. Scott Jacks unexpectedly passed away. A dedicated husband, loving father of two Windward graduates, and firm believer in the importance of innovative education, Scott’s vision and leadership were instrumental in guiding Windward through some of its most fruitful years of growth. He played a critical role on Windward’s Board of Trustees for a dozen years, five of them as Board Chair from 2005-2010. During this time, he demonstrated critical leadership in many capacities, lending his expertise to the School’s Long-Range Planning committee and playing an instrumental role in the development of Windward’s previous Strategic Plan. Survived by wife Marsha and children Lauren ’06 and Greg ’08, Scott touched the lives of many and contributed to the Windward community in innumerable ways that will live on forever. Among many other legacies, the Jacks
Family Reading Deck, located on the top floor of the Center for Teaching and Learning, provides a lasting vista of the campus that he worked so hard to build and improve for the students of today and tomorrow. A celebration of the life of Scott Jacks was held on the Windward campus on November 9, 2014, coordinated in conjunction with the Willows Community School, where Scott had also served as Chair of the Board of Trustees. More reflections on Scott’s many contributions to our school community will be featured in an upcoming issue of Windward Magazine later this year.

Financial Aid Spotlight Stephanie Garcia ‘14
A
sk Ask Stephanie Garcia ’14 about her experience at Windward, and the recent graduate can sum up her journey in two words: “life changing.”
Stephanie, a self-described “handson” learner, always had an interest in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math), but found it challenging to reach her full potential with the limited resources and large class sizes of her elementary school.
“I can’t help but smile. It’s truly one of the happiest memories I have,” Stephanie said about receiving her acceptance letter to Windward in 2007. “With the acceptance and financial aid package the school offered, it meant I would actually be able to attend Windward.”
”
At Windward, Stephanie took her first “real" science class with just nine other students. Her seventh grade year was filled with interactive labs and active learning, which sparked her love for math and science. After being placed in 8th period middle school Robotics, Stephanie was unsure if it was the right fit for her. But with the help of an older classmate, she learned how to program. The attention and support Stephanie received from faculty along the way gave her a major confidence boost, which she carried into high school. During her four years in Upper School Robotics, Science and Technology chair Simon Huss helped guide her through both the fun times and the more challenging ones.
I am very grateful for everything Windward has done for me and for those who have contributed to the Financial Aid program. - STEPHANIE GARCIA '14
12
“I can’t thank him enough. There were times when I thought about quitting. Robotics is really hard, but he always encouraged me to stick with it,” said Stephanie. Robotics taught Stephanie the skills for successful collaboration that she will use throughout her life. Her time spent in Robotics has influenced her educational choices, including her decision to pursue engineering at the University of Pennsylvania. As a first-generation college student, attending UPenn is a particularly significant achievement for Stephanie and her family. “I am very grateful for everything Windward has done for me and for those who have contributed to the Financial Aid program. Where would I be if I had never received that acceptance letter or financial aid packet?”
Stephanie also took full advantage of Windward’s robust arts program during her six years at Windward. As a sophomore, Stephanie worked alongside visiting artist Meeson Pae Yang as part of the Installation Project at Windward. At the conclusion of the project, Pae Yang rewarded
Stephanie’s dedication by offering her a studio assistant position that following summer.
“The internship was so rewarding, and I would have never met her if it weren’t for innovative programs such as Windward’s Visiting Artist Program.” During the summer leading into her senior year, Stephanie participated in a four-week internship with AECOM, a global leader in architecture, energy, transportation, and civil engineering. The program was truly eye opening for Stephanie, as it allowed her to learn through experiences with experts in these fields.
“It was really inspiring to learn from the employees at AECOM because I looked at them and realized that all of my hard work at Windward and beyond could eventually pay off.” Stephanie’s younger sister Meresa ’19 now too has the opportunity to attend Windward thanks to its robust Financial Aid program. “My parents always wanted my sister and me to have a great education. Windward has helped their dreams come true and has helped me reach my full potential.”

iving to Windward is our top priority since it is hard to imagine anything more important than supporting the environment that our children are in almost more than they are at home. The CTL: Partnering with Faculty
W
indward’s Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) opened in 2009 as a dynamic library space to bring together the community to exchange ideas, learn together, and grow. Through the collective talents of faculty and administrators, the CTL has been enriching teaching, learning, and thinking at Windward ever since. In addition to assisting faculty with curriculum development, research, and technology needs, the CTL has partnered with Coordinator of Professional Development Programs, Paula Hirsch, in supporting faculty through Windward’s Faculty Betterment Fund.
Since its inception, Windward’s Faculty Betterment Fund has supported faculty in their far-reaching goals. Faculty are encouraged to set professional goals and are assisted in their efforts to meet those goals.

I came back from these conferences with such great ideas, and it really invigorated my practice. - JULIE GUNTHER, SCIENCE TEACHER
The summer time is an opportunity for Windward faculty to recharge before the start of the new school year. Faculty betterment spending enabled Science teacher Julie Gunther to attend both the CUE (Computer Using Educators) Rock Star Camp and the Stanley H. King Counseling Institute’s Summer Institute in Colorado.
“I am among the educators who believe that real learning happens when there is a real relationship present in the classroom. The Institute focuses on how to create those meaningful relationships with adolescents by developing our deep listening skills,” said Julie. Professional development not only empowers teachers in their instruction, it also enables them to build long-standing relationships with other professionals in their field. “I came back from these conferences with such great ideas, and it really invigorated my practice,” said Julie. Most recently, Windward’s Betterment fund has also enabled STEAM faculty to attend training in Project Lead the Way and has
also funded Windward’s participation in the Stanford University School of Education Challenge Success program.
Windward’s Betterment Fund has funded iPad faculty development since 2011. In June, a team of Windward teachers attended Hillbrook School’s “iPad School Summer Seminar,” a three-day seminar during which they designed effective iPad practices for their classrooms. Over the years, the CTL staff has become known as campus “connectors” by creating forums across campus for faculty to connect with others with like-minded objectives. In November 2013, English teacher Dawn Robinson enlisted the help of the CTL on an 8th grade class project that initially focused on the subject matter of the Holocaust.
“I had a variety of learning goals, but only a nebulous idea of how to make those ideas come together. Larisa and Cielo helped clarify the scope and potential outcomes of the project,” said Dawn.
In the end, students worked in groups to create "documentaries" about current global human rights issues and had a chance to experience the power of well-chosen words and images in conveying their message. “I cannot emphasize strongly enough what a treasure I think the CTL is for teachers,” said Dawn.

On a yearly basis, these funds enable Windward faculty to develop and introduce new educational programs as well as make substantial improvements to existing initiatives. Below are three sample programs that have benefited from Annual Fund support this year:
CHALLENGE S U C C ESS Our second full year with Challenge Success is already shaping up to be one of significant action. Ultimately, the work we do in Challenge Success informs our participation in every other area of the school. Therefore, this year, we have expanded our committee, adding new faculty and student members to broaden our reach and to increase on campus awareness of the work we are doing. During the 2013-14 school year, the Challenge Success team worked collaboratively to develop a vision statement to guide the work ahead. This vision reads as follows:
Our Challenge Success vision is to support Windward students in ways that will ultimately prepare them to lead happy, healthy, and meaningful lives. We endeavor to do this by: first, focusing on what really matters in education curiosity, creativity, collaboration, and instilling in all students a love of learning; and, second, by sharing with the community the knowledge and the tools that will help make substantive changes that will positively impact the lives of students and adults. Through a supportive, caring environment and an engaging educational program, we will promote an understanding of the whole student and strive to reduce the stress that is pervasive in today’s independent school environment.

Windward has a technologyrich environment, and we have more than doubled the number of devices on campus in the last year. As we move forward, we recognize the need to be mindful and evaluative of what our current technologies are, as well as the need to look ahead to the future. The new Technology Task Force will gather representatives from across campus and across disciplines and departments in order to advise the senior administrative team regarding technology decisions, the assessment of current technologies, and the evaluation of future opportunities. Some areas that the group will examine first are: identifying what we as a school value in regards to student technology skills and fluency and assessing the effectiveness of current technologies we use on campus.

e are very grateful that our son Robbie is a student here and our family cares deeply about contributing to Windward’s momentum and future success. As we all know, Windward is a very special place. Whenever people get together and contribute time and energy towards a common goal, good things inevitably happen. We believe the volunteer effort of the Windward parent body is a great example of that. We also think it’s healthy for our children to see their parents actively engaged in the betterment of their education. Volunteering has without a doubt enriched our experience as Windward parents by bringing us closer to so many of the incredible folks that make it such a wonderful school.

alk around this campus and notice the new buildings, the new athletics facilities, the programs: robotics, dance, arts and more. None of that would have happened without the hard work and generosity of those who came before us, contributions that left Windward in a better place for us and for our children. Therefore, our family personally feels an obligation to do the same for all those who come after us.

olunteering through Windward’s Parent Guild has given me so many opportunities to get involved in different ways at the school and meet new people in the process. It’s rewarding to know that, no matter which project I’m involved with, I’m directly helping to create a better school for my daughters, their friends, and all the Windward students that will follow in their footsteps.

Major Gifts
B
y partnering with Tom Gilder and our Board of Trustees, Major Gifts donors provide the necessary funding for Windward to take significant steps forward in realizing our Strategic Plan, including enhancing academic programs, upgrading facilities, and building our endowment to ensure the long term financial health of the school. These gifts are transformational and help ensure that Windward continues to innovate and thrive. Major gifts are often multiple year pledges from a small number of families who have made the commitment to support the school at the highest level, above and beyond their gifts to the annual fund. Thank you to each of the families who have made these generous gifts which will impact Windward School for years, and in many cases decades, to come.

MAKING AN IMPACT: MAJOR GIFTS AT WORK
In the past year, Windward School has been fortunate to receive transformative Major Gifts, giving our students unparalleled access to innovative programs, unique partnerships, as well as exceptional facilities and resources. Following are a few highlighted areas where Major Gifts have made an impact.
FINANCIAL AID Windward School has been steadfastly committed to financial aid since founded by Shirley Windward. The Financial Aid budget has grown to over $2.3 million dollars this last academic year, providing financial assistance to over 13% of our student population. Financial Aid recipients averaged a 3.7 GPA while at Windward, and in the last five years, every student who has received financial aid has gone on to college attending such prestigious institutions as Harvard, NYU, Stanford, USC, UC Berkeley, and UCLA.
STEAM The STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) program strives to inspire and foster innovation, as well as to prepare our students for effective involvement in an increasingly technological society. Major gifts to STEAM have not only enabled unique internship partnerships with private companies AECOM and Boeing, but these gifts have also opened up incredible opportunities for our increasingly successful robotics program, and they have allowed for the purchase and use of seven new 3-D printers (Windward is even being featured in an upcoming publication about 3-D printing in the classroom).

(Major Gifts cont.) STUDENT PEAK PERFORMANCE CENTER Education is a matter of engaging more than the mind alone. Allowing young people to participate in a range of academic and extra-curricular experiences fosters social growth and responsibility. Beginning in 2012, Windward began to work with Stanford University’s Challenge Success program and its founder, renowned education researcher Denise Pope, to ensure that our students have a healthy balance in their lives. Whether they are preparing for a big test, a part in an upcoming play, or an athletic contest, the support our students receive is critical to their performance. Gifts to the Student Peak Performance Center have helped Windward create the optimal learning and training environment, lending a healthy balance for success.
PERFORMING AND VISUAL ARTS INITIATIVE
GLOBAL STUDIES
Creativity and innovation have been core values of Windward School since its inception. The Performing and Visual Arts Initiative has given Windward the ability to expand its programming and use of guest artists, while also providing students with the experience of performing in professional venues. Since its launch, our dance program has worked with alums Adam Shankman and Jennifer Gibgot ’87, along with stars from TV’s So You Think You Can Dance? in UCLA’s Freud Theater, and our music students have played alongside bassist Jimmy Haslip. To this end, Windward has installed a Poster Wall to recognize artists and promote upcoming events and performances.
Global Studies uses a cross-cultural team teaching model and a design thinking-based approach to learning. Gifts in support of the Global Studies Initiative have ensured that Windward offers students new opportunities to learn about global issues and realize their roles as global citizens. In fact, Windward’s Global Studies partnership with USC’s Shoah foundation was prominently featured on NBC’s Today Show, and as a result of our students' work with the iWitness database, they were invited to participate in the USC Shoah Foundation’s 20th Anniversary Gala, featuring Steven Spielberg and President Obama.

WHY i give Jill Fromer (JACLYN FROMER COHEN ’02, ANDREW FROMER ’08)
I
continue to give back to Windward because the School gave both my children extraordinary opportunities to explore their performing arts, sports and leadership talents. At the same time they received a well-rounded college preparatory education from Windward that prepared them for college and helped build the foundations for their professional careers.

Ways to Give
Ways to Give Windward, like most independent schools, relies upon charitable gifts beyond tuition income to support school programs. The special attributes that set Windward apart – small classes, innovative teaching, a diverse student body, well-maintained facilities, and dynamic offerings beyond core classes – are expensive. Rather than increasing tuition to support them, we solicit tax-deductible donations through various initiatives that help the school and allow families to give based on their ability. Cash, Check, or Credit Card
Gifts-In-Kind
Recurring Gifts
Matching Gifts
Your cash gift is tax deductible within the guidelines established by the IRS. Cash gifts can be made by check or can be charged to your Visa or MasterCard. Credit card gifts can be made online at www. windwardschool.org/give or by contacting Lindsay Knaub at 424-289-1050. Windward School provides the opportunity to give at any frequency. If you’re interested in giving a monthly, quarterly or yearly donation, visit our website at www.windwardschool.org/give.
Securities
A gift to Windward of appreciated securities entitles the donor to a charitable deduction for its full current market value, without paying the capital gains tax on the appreciation, which would be required if the securities were sold for personal gain. Contact the Advancement Office for stock transfer instructions.
We welcome gifts of goods or services that may provide a budgetary savings to the School to fulfill a particular departmental need. Per IRS guidelines, the School will provide a thank you letter substantiating your in kind gift. Please consult with your tax advisor to identify the tax benefits specific to such a gift. Gift matching is a way to increase the value of your own charitable gift through your employer. Corporate Matching Gift programs are a great way to double or triple your gift. Some companies match gifts made by retirees and/or spouses. Simply send us the appropriate paperwork from your employer’s Human Resources Department, and your gift to Windward School will be matched according to your company’s guidelines. We will take care of the rest.
Real Estate
Giving a gift of real estate, such as a personal home, vacation home, undeveloped property, or a farm, can be a highly effective philanthropic and financial strategy. To discuss the tax and other benefits of making a gift of real estate, contact the Dawn Barrett, Director of Operations and Advancement, at 424-289-1015.
Planned Giving
Future gifts can be made through one’s estate. Wills, charitable trusts, bequests, and life insurance policies offer the opportunity for leaving a lasting legacy to benefit the future of Windward. We encourage you to speak with your financial planner for information when considering this type of gift.
