A playful springtime

“We want our works to have elegance, to be expressive, to ooze life, to have feelings. We want them to reflect the good side of life, the positive values of a human being, all that which dignifies life.”

Juan, José and Vicente, founders of Lladró.

SPRINGTIME REVERIE SPRING IS A SEASON OF CHANGE AND RENEWAL, a time of dreams. Moved by this spirit, we have launched a new look. As well as offering a more contemporary and attractive aesthetic, LLadró Magazine comes as an answer to the demand from the many Lladró admirers everywhere who enjoy reading the contents of this publication. The initiative also stems from the brand communication with important collectors and a broad and varied array of porcelain lovers, both young and old, throughout the world. Their tastes may vary and they may have different motives for acquiring our creations, but they all share a passion for Lladró. There are no better exponents of this passion for hand-crafted objects than the Lladró family. In this issue, we are joined yet again by Juan Lladró who reveals the secret of Flowers of the season, one of our best-selling pieces and one that continues to capture the hearts and minds of Lladró admirers across the globe. Juan is joined by Ángeles Lladró who invites us into her garden and shows us how Lladró’s creations can be used to enhance the beauty of outdoor spaces. Also as a highlight is the High Porcelain section, which looks at the majestic Arabian pure breed through the eyes of one of the world’s greatest authorities on this equine breed. In an exclusive interview with Lladró Magazine, the renowned horse breeder Marieta Salas gives us an expert insight to this beautiful animal, a creature recreated perfectly in this High Porcelain sculpture. Lladró’s Privilege and Priviliege Gold collections continue to enjoy a special place in Lladró Magazine, with new pieces —overflowing with romanticism and fantasy— created exclusively for members of Privilege and Gold. Other new Lladró creations bring to the new season the poetry of womanhood and sensuality: it’s there with greater intensity than ever in pieces featuring rococo ladies, figures inspired by the paintings of Modigliani, tributes to motherhood and angels, all of which voice their own particular verses of praise to feminine values. Finally, in keeping with the magazine’s new spirit, we’ve created a new name for the regular section on news and events. We’ve called it The Lladró Universe and we’ve given it an original and contemporary look and feel. As always, it’s your window onto everything happening in the world of Lladró.

‘BLISSFUL YOUTH’ is yet another Lladró creation that reaffirms the brand’s devotion to female beauty. It is a sculpture in which our artists have achieved a perfect blend of elegance, movement and simplicity. The sculpture shows a barefoot young girl carrying flowers. A gust of wind catches her hair and causes her clothing to tangle, forcing her to advance on tiptoe to avoid tripping over her skirt. The moment captured highlights even further the sculptures classic proportions, an idealized vision of feminine beauty and an allegory of Spring and the strength of youth. ‘Blissful Youth’ is fashioned in gloss glazed porcelain and features Lladró’s classic colors, which are heightened further in the young girl’s flowers whose petals are a testimony to the considerable attention that has been paid to detail in this sculpture.

eternal Lladró

‘Flowers of the season' is a strong favorite with Lladró’s many admirers. For Juan Lladró, the character’s sensitivity and the beautiful flowers explain why millions of people have fallen in love with this sculpture.

NOW AND THEN, an instant of inspiration and firm dedication are enough to spark an act of sheer genius, long-lasting and capable of reaching the hearts of millions of people. “This is the secret of Flowers of the season, a Lladró figure that, since 1984, has earned the endearment of porcelain lovers throughout the world, thanks to its exquisite craftsmanship and its beautiful colors,” explains Juan Lladró. The eldest of the three brothers of the company’s founders can’t help but smile when he is asked why Flowers of the season stills ranks

among Lladró’s best-selling items. “I think it’s because of the innocence it transmits; the character is a well of sensitivity, and although the scene is simple, it is extremely hard to achieve,” he says. “Just look at how exquisite the flowers are,” emphasizes Juan. Certainly, it’s plain to see that delicate craftsmanship is the key to this figure. There are hundreds of flowers of all kinds (roses, daisies, carnations, petunias…) combining 30 different shades in a harmonious whole. Flowers have always been a characteristic feature of Lladró creations.

Lladró’s artists, who are unsurpassed in their skill, give life to them one by one, petal by petal. “There’s a wealth of experience behind the success of these pieces,” points out Juan. In this respect, Flowers of the season is a moment of splendor and a veritable creative landmark in Lladró’s history. A closing thought: if each flower is laboriously and individually crafted, would it be fair to say that each piece is unique? Juan Lladró certainly thinks so: “No two figures are alike, even if they appear to be identical.”

Left, the Ses Planes estate in the Esporlas Valley (Majorca, Spain) and the owner, Marieta Salas, with one of the horses from her stables, which were set up in 1965. Right, Marieta with Ernest Massuet, the sculptor who fashioned the Lladró piece.

THE ARTISTS at Lladró’s High Porcelain atelier have managed to create an exact replica of the Arab thoroughbred, widely held to be the most beautiful horse in the world. From the features of the animal’s slim and handsome head to the muscles and the tone of the coat, everything about this sculpture says “beauty”, “elegance.” This dappled horse came as a challenge to Lladró’s artists. The saddle, of Egyptian inspiration, is a jewel in itself, just like the other elements that adorn the piece, which is hand-painted meticulously down to the tiniest detail. The sculpture was conceived by Ernest Mausset, a Lladró sculptor and an amateur horse lover with an extensive knowledge of the equestrian world. He was advised by Marieta Salas, a mythical name in Arab thoroughbred breeding circles. Some of the best Arab thoroughbreds in the world have come out of Marieta’s Ses Planes (Majorca) stables. In fact some of them have been described as perfect. Why? Because of their exceptional blend of beauty, charisma and character. The key lies in Marieta’s unconditional love of these animals and a profound knowledge honed by three decades of “patience and humility.”

What makes the Arab thoroughbred such an aristocratic breed? It’s handsome thanks to its slender figure, and you can almost see the muscles under the silky coat. And

it’s tough and athletic too. But, above all, it’s extremely affectionate. It’s probably the most intelligent breed of horse too; it’s endowed with a huge memory for affection and displays a great sense of curiosity. What’s more, they need you near them all the time. I make every effort to be everywhere at once. One eventually creates a strong bond with these horses, a bond born of trust. I think I have a gift for it. You only get to dominate one of these horses by applying the principles of seduction, by being a convincing presence and by using the correct tone of voice.

world the demand is huge, though pretty much the same can be said nowadays of Europe and the USA. Increasingly, Arab horses are ridden on uneven ground because of their toughness and skill. What do you find most satisfying about your work? I take great pride in displaying the horses at shows and events. But what I really enjoy most is breeding them and watching them come into the world. I love to be alone with the horses when everyone else has gone home. I give a lot of love and I get a lot back.

“THERE ARE BEAUTIFUL HORSES, BUT SOME SEEM TO SHINE WITH A LIGHT OF THEIR OWN.” They say that charisma is one of the distinguishing features of these horses… That’s very true. There are many beautiful horses, but some stand out for the way they move or the way they look at you. They seem to shine with a light of their own. These horses are highly aware of their elegance, and they tend to be vain and love being the center of attraction. El Perfecto is like that. So too is Abha Hamir, a mare. Is there such a thing as a typical buyer for this kind of horse? Clients who acquire this kind of horse are seeking a symbol of exclusiveness; they enjoy showing this exquisite creature to friends and acquaintances. In the Arab

How would you describe your experience with Lladró? I’ve known of Lladró for some time now and I have great respect for the company and its long years of success. I went to see them personally and I was very impressed by their great work, their working environment, the way they support important activities and crafts. I saw that Lladró and I both work in very much the same way. Spaion can be rightly proud of Lladró and I hope they go on for many, many years. I suggested a few ideas to the sculptor Ernest Massuet, although I could see that the team of craftsmen was already extremely well informed. At any event, I feel as though I was part of the team and I am amazed at the results.

SPRINGTIME BRINGS with it an invitation to step outside again to enjoy and make the most of the outdoors. Ángeles Lladró showed us how Lladró’s creations can bring a warm, romantic, natural and fresh touch to the moments spent in the open air. As she points out: “We all have our own special corner of the garden, a space just waiting for the final touch of a Lladró creation.” Ángeles is convinced that Lladró’s pieces make a difference not only to home interiors but also to

people’s lives in general. “Unlike the idea of a zen garden, our creations can bring a lively touch to gardens, they can emphasize the bond between people and nature.” Thanks to the materials used, and because Lladró pieces are fired to a temperature of 1,300°C / 2,372F, our creations are outdoor-resistant, wellsuited to either indoor or outdoor use, and will stand up to a wide range of weather conditions. As Ángeles points out: “We should decorate our

outdoor spaces so that we can enjoy them, changing pieces according to what suits us at any given time or depending on the time of the year.” Both glazed porcelain and gres, which looks as if it has just sprung from the earth, enhance the uniqueness of a garden or a patio. The same can be said of pieces featuring sculpted flowers; they are guaranteed to stand up to the ravages of the weather. “On the other hand, warns Ángeles, creations with individually sculpted petals

are more delicate and should be located in more protected zones, such as a porch.” So there you have it: Lladró creations are the perfect décor complement for those outdoor spots that on many occasions are the setting for life’s more unforgettable moments. And because Ángeles is convinced that having guests is what makes a house a home, she knows just how to decorate every last corner of her garden at any given moment so that it becomes a very special place.

SPRINGTIME IS HERE AGAIN, with a new light filled with yellow, green and blue-ish hues. The same colors abound in ‘Spring Teddy Bear’, the second piece in Lladró Four Seasons collection. The piece is the result of a team effort between Lladró and Steiff, two leading brands in porcelain and Teddy bears respectively, and once again this limited edition Teddy bear brings together the Steiff tradition and Lladró’s highly characteristic porcelain flowers. The delicate wildflower tiara, a subtle

creation comprising porcelain petals handcrafted individually by Lladró’s artists, is filled with the colors of Spring. If ‘Autumn Teddy Bear’ came as a delightful surprise to collectors, ‘Spring Teddy Bear’ is sure to become a wonderful friend with whom to share the light and joy of this marvelous time of the year. The colors featured in this collection are inspired by the seasons and by the floral tiaras that have been specially designed for these poetry-filled figures.

Original, fun design

LLADRÓ PORCELAIN has provided the inspiration for the latest fashion collection by, EL DELGADO BUIL, a young Spanish fashion company that is currently making an international name for itself. Using fine, shiny cottons, silks, etc. that enhance the brand’s signature dusty colors, the collection borrows different elements from Lladró sculptures –especially Lladró’s trademark flowers– as the starting point for their prints.

THE GHENT DESIGN MUSEUM CENTER (Belgium) held the ‘Design with a Smile’ exhibition that ended on October 12th, showcased the work of some of the world’s most entertaining designers. The exhibition included 150 objects from a variety of spheres (décor, lighting, toys, household items, fashion…) that brought a new vision filled with humor and originality. This was plain to see in the Lladró creations by Jaime Hayon and Bodo Sperlein, which provided an insight into the personal universe of these two designers and highlighted the beauty and quality that one has come to expect of Lladró porcelain. The selection of pieces on display included, among others, ‘The Lover’, from Jaime Hayon’s The Fantasy collection and Bodo Sperlein’s ‘Equus’ pieces, from the Lladró Re-Cyclos collection.

Rosa Lladró in Singapore, with two clients who fell in love with the High Porcelain sculpture The Kiss.

The clients at the Lladró Boutique in New York gave Rosa a very warm welcome.

High Porcelain and ‘Iris and cherry flowers fan’ were the stars of these tours. Lladró sculpture, The Queen of the Nile mesmerized visitors, and in particular a client who used the event to make two dreams come true: to purchase the sculpture and to have it signed by Rosa Lladró! Later, in October, Rosa travelled to the United States to present Iris and cherry flowers fan, a limited edition (2,000 pieces) inspired by Japanese ukiyo-e wood-block prints and paintings. Rosa Lladró presented the fan –which was ordered by a number of clients after they saw it in the previous issue of this magazine– to enthusiastic Lladró admirers in Miami, Orlando, Houston, Scottsdale, Pasadena and Pleasanton, as well as in the Lladró Boutiques in New York, Beverly Hills and Las Vegas. The many and lucky clients who purchased the piece took home an exclusive gift: a beautiful fan inspired by the sculpture.

CELEBRATIONS ‘Children of the World’, a step further in our collaboration with Operation Smile

CHILDREN OF THE WORLD [25 x 25 cm, 10” x 10”] Ref. 01008421

This creation shows five children, representing the children of the world.

AS PART OF OUR LONGSTANDING collaboration with Operation Smile, Lladró has created Children of the World, a special piece that comes to pay hommage to a worldwide children’s charity. Operation Smile is dedicated to helping improve the lives of millions of underprivileged children, throughout the world, born with cleft lips, cleft palates and other facial deformities. The piece was presented last September Privilege Gold members in Italy, with Santo Versace, the chairman of the Italian branch of Operation Smile doing the honors. It was later presented again at the Operation Smile 7th

Annual Gala Event, held in Los Angeles. The organizers gave a Children of the World sculpture to Roma Downey, the wife of the TV presenter Mark Burnett, in recognition of her work with Operation Smile –Roma and her children took part in a mission in Amman in May of last year. The figure shows five children, representing the children of the world. If you’d like to become the proud owner of one of these sculptures, please visit www.lladro.com/porcelain/osmile/. A portion of the revenue from sales of this piece will be donated directly to Operation Smile.

Mahatma Gandhi still walks the road to peace LLADRÓ HAS LAUNCHED a special commemorative piece coinciding with the 60th anniversary of the death of Gandhi. The sculpture is an excellent likeness of the great political leader and thinker, Mahatma Ghandi (1869-1948), frequently referred to as escribed as the “Father of the Indian nation.” Ghandi ranked among the great historical figures who shaped the 20th century politically and ideologically. His slight build, his characteristic austerity and his uniquely powerful personality are faithfully reflected in this glazed porcelain piece. Lladró’s artists show the peaceful leader walking, in a tribute to a thinker who never ceased to tread the road to peace. MAHATMA GANDHI [31 x 12 cm, 12 ¼“ x 4 ¾“] Ref. 01008417

SIGNING EVENTS Angeles Lladró in Calcutta, dressed in a traditional sari, with Lladró’s sales division manager, Sergio Ramírez, and the Lladró team in India.

The signing events held in Australia made it clear that Lladró’s creations are the best way to remember the world’s great history.

Ángeles Lladró at the Osaka (Japan) event, with the couple who purchased Great Dragon.

Ángeles Lladró signs pieces in Australia, India and Japan LAST SEPTEMBER, Ángeles Lladró traveled to the other side of the world to show our Australian customers the latest Lladró High Porcelain creations. During the five-city tour, both longstanding Lladró admirers and new customers alike were pleased to purchase a sculpture and to have it signed by Juan Lladró’s daughter. In Australia, visitors in Brisbane were greatly impressed by Great Dragon, and in Sidney Ángeles Lladró received a warm welcome from over a hundred Lladró admirers and had lunch with the publishers and editors of Australia’s foremost décor and trends magazines. Then it was on to Canberra and Melbourne, followed by a magnificent display in Adelaide spotlighting A grand adventure. Finally it was

back to in Sidney for the tour’s grand finale: Ángeles presented The Queen of the Nile in an event that made it clear that Lladró’s creations are the best way to remember the world’s great history. From Australia, Ángeles traveled on to India. In Calcutta, dressed in a traditional sari, she took part in an unforgettable event with 80 or so clients who were keen to meet Angeles and to get her signature on one of the pieces they had purchased. The sculptures that were the most admired by the visitors were those with an Indian theme, with the Mahatma Gandhi figure a clear favorite. One admirer took home three Ganeshas and the Goddess Lakshmi. To round-off the event, visitors were treated

to a tasting of the local mughlai cuisine. In October, Ángeles flew to Japan to take part in a presentation of the new Lladró collections in Osaka’s Kintetsu Abeno shopping mall where she signed a number of pieces. On display were the The Fantasy, Lladró Re-Cyclos by Committee, Equus, Naturofantastic and the Re-Deco collections, and also a selection of High Porcelain pieces. Ángeles also presented the new fall introductions, with Santa’s midnight ride a company favorite with the admirers who went along to the event. Lladró’s fascination with oriental cultures as a source of inspiration led Ángeles to go along to a performance of bunraku (traditional Japanese puppets).

ENCOUNTERS Re-Cyclos by Committee, in Japan The 300 or so guests at the Cibone event found it hard to tear themselves away from the pieces created by Committee. The Committee duo during a press conference held in Tokyo.

LAST SUMMER, Lladró’s team in Japan organized a tour of Tokyo to present the Lladró Re-Cyclos by Committee pieces. The designers who worked on this collection, Claire Page and Harry Richardson, also joined the tour, which began with a press conference, attended by a hundred or so representatives of the media, at the city’s Ceramics Museum. The next stop on the itinerary was Cibone, an exclusive art gallery renowned for launching trend-setting creations. Committee’s designers suggested painting flowers on

the gallery walls; Lladró took up the challenge and the floral mural turned out to be an unbeatable backdrop for the sculptures. Apart from being great fun to carry out, the flowercovered walls created a very special atmosphere that took the 300 or so guests entirely by surprise at the evening cocktail party. The decoration at Lladró’s Ginza Boutique used a similar theme, with flowers being the main feature of the speciallydesigned decoration for the Lladró Re-Cyclos by Committee presentation event.

THE SKY WAS THE LIMIT for the first anniversary celebrations of Warsaw’s exclusive Salon Firmowy Lladró’ gallery. There were many well-known faces among the more than 100 guests at the special event organized by this Lladró Official Retailer in Poland on November 28th, such as the mezzosprano Malgorzata Walewska (who has been a member of the Great Theater of Warsaw since 1991) and the actress Teresa Budsisz-Krzyznowska. One of Lladró’s flower artists was available to give guests a live and close-up look at how porcelain petals are crafted. Another similar

demonstration was held on November 29th. In a relaxed atmosphere in one of the Polish capital’s most prestigious galleries, the guests had the chance to admire Lladró’s new collections, which also drew considerable attention from Poland’s main TV channels, as well as holding the celebrities riveted with admiration. It wasn’t just Salon Firmowy’s regular clients who purchased and heaped praise upon Lladró pieces that evening: the celebrities also took the opportunity to take home a figure as a long-lasting reminder of a truly special evening.

A special light for Philippsburg TO MARK THE 1,250TH ANNIVERSARY of the German city of Philipsburg, Lladró has created a delicate lithophane lamp representing a bridge between past and future and lighting up two great names for the whole world to see: Lladró and Philippsburg. Steeped in history and tradition, the city was an important military stronghold in the Thirty Years War (1618-1648) and boasts a prestigious coat of arms which features on the surface of the lamp.

Art works from the Lladró Museum, on display in Vitoria, Spain THE HEADQUARTERS OF VITORIA’S CAJA VITAL FOUNDATION was the venue —from September 11th through October 12th— for The Art of Form and Color, an exhibition comprising 31 porcelain and stoneware sculptures and twenty paintings loaned by the Lladró Museum in Tavernes Blanques (Valencia, Spain). The exhibition displayed a number of ways of understanding art as shown in the works belonging to the Lladró Museum, home to one of Spain’s most renowned private art collections. Among the porcelain works were some of the most ground-breaking pieces developed by Lladró over the years; while aesthetically they differ from more customary Lladró pieces, the quality and penchant for detail is clearly visible. The exhibition included works by Alonso Berruguete, José de Ribera, Francisco de Zurbarán, Vicente López, Ignacio Pinazo, Joaquín Sorolla and other renowned artists.

Lladró sculpture trophies for the winners of the Madrid Dressage Festival

One of the winning riders receives a Lladró trophy-sculpture.

LLADRÓ HAS a number of horse-themed creations, some of which recently became trophies for the 2nd Madrid BMW/RACE Dressage Festival held on October 17th and 18th. The Festival, which stands among the most prestigious events on the equestrian calendar, was organized by RACE automobile club and was held at their installations in San Sebastián de los Reyes (Madrid). The sculptures Horse on pirouette, Horse on Courbette, Gallop I, II and III, pieces from the Movement collection and the Bacchus bottle stopper Horse were presented as trophies to the winners of the most important events of the Festival, which brought together some of Spain’s leading male and female riders. Many of the riding fans who attended the Festival also went along to admire the Lladró creations which were on display throughout the Festival weekend at the RACE club’s Madrid offices.

Visitors to the exhibition admire one of the works from the Lladró art collection.

Getting a close look at Lladró A GROUP MADE UP of retailers from the UK and Russia visited Lladró last July to get a closer look at the production process and to acquaint themselves with our new creations. Each member of the group was greeted individually by Juan Lladró and the group enjoyed looking around the historical porcelain collections and admiring the Lladró Museum’s important art collection. After lunch with Rosa Lladró, they made their way to the museum boutique where they acquired pieces signed by the President of Lladró. Another notable visitor was an esteemed Lladró collector from Maryland who is, without a doubt, the owner of one of the largest collections of Lladró creations, comprising over a thousand items. CORRECTION: In an article published on page 24 of the previous issue of this magazine, we stated that the world’s largest collection of Lladró pieces is owned by two of our clients in Ukraine. This is incorrect and we apologize for any inconvenience this error may have caused.

A playful springtime

‘Flowers of the season' is a strong favorite with Lladró’s many admirers. For Juan Lladró, the character’s sensitivity and the beautiful flowers explain why millions of people have fallen in love with this sculpture.

THE LOVELIGHT SHINES ROMANTICISM is never out of style. Privilege Gold members have first choice (until September) of this love-struck couple snuggling up by the light of the moon. The sculpture has a life of its own thanks to the skill of Lladró’s artists. The tender looks and the minute detail on the floral decorations are heightened by Lladró’s new range of colors. The salmon pink reflections on the girl’s dress and the intensity of the flowers that adorn the ladder add to the singularity of this limited edition.

These sculptures of women, inspired by the painter Modigliani, enhance the feeling of oneness with the outdoors.

Lladró creations like Pulse of África add an ethnic touch to a patio table.

Ángeles Lladró invites us into her home: “On my travels around the world, Lladró admirers often ask me if our creations are also suitable for outdoors. What better answer than to show them my own garden?” styling. NURIA MENOYO pictures. MANUEL ARTERO

FOTO: Kreationen wie The Pulse of Africa (Herzschlage Afrikas) verleihen unserem Terrassentisch einen ethnischen Anflug.

MUSIC IS THE CENTRAL theme of a series of pieces that completes with Mridangam Ganesha, a new Lladró creation that shows the god of Knowledge and Wisdom playing a traditional Indian drum. The artistic quality of the four sculptures underscores the

mystical connection between the divine music and the sacred melody. The sculpture shows the physical attributes of the Hindu elephant-god, the bringer of Fortune: the gada (mace), the paasha (sacred thread) and the broken tusk, each an example of our craftsmen’s passion for detail.

The figure also includes the everpresent mouse —lord Ganesha’s vehicle— who represents the worldly desires that the elephant deity has overcome with ease. Special colors have been used in this piece, such as saffron and deep red of the tattoos. These are shades that appear over

and over again in India’s rich tradition, and have been created specifically to enhance the delicateness and grace of these pieces. These four Ganeshas surprise you with their striking beauty and their spirituality transmitted by the movement of the god.

Madrid, London, Helsinki, Kortrijk, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Paris, Tokio, New York, Moskau, Kiew… The Fantasy Collection by Jaime Hayon besuchte in diesem Herbst acht Städte in der ganzen Welt.

LAST SEPTEMBER, Lladró’s president presented the High Porcelain collection in New Zealand and Singapore, at signing events that received an enthusiastic welcome. In New Zealand’s Christchurch and Auckland, Lladró admirers stood in line for almost two hours to discuss with Rosa Lladró the finer points of the High Porcelain collection and to get Rosa’s autograph on their favorite Lladró pieces. The painstacking production process of these sculptures was the main subject of many of the conversations about the feelings inspired by Lladró sculptures. The Kiss and the red version of Great Dragon stole the show and were both purchased. Great Dragon took center stage in Singapore too, where the three versions of this Lladró sculpture received their Asian premiere.

Mahatma Gandhi, the “Father of the Indian Nation”, is the subject of one of Lladró’s most recent creations.

LAST SEPTEMBER, Ángeles Lladró traveled to the other side of the world to show our Australian customers the latest Lladró High Porcelain creations.
