Be part of it and join today to make friends, meet people, have fun

welcome! Hello and welcome to our Autumn newsletter, and another huge batch of excitement, fun, entertaining events for you to get out there and make a difference to the quality of life, all in an instant! Once again, if you’re new here, the front and back sections relate to things of interest to the whole of Spice around the country, and the middle section from page 7 onwards, relates to your local Spice Group. However, much as we try, this newsletter is pretty much out of date the day it is sent to the printers, so with new events being added every day to the Spice Programme, do keep an eye on the website listings to keep up to speed and not miss anything. We also communicate with our members with weekly email updates dropping in to your in box, along with our Facebook pages. Our National Spice Facebook Page is found at www.fb.com/spiceuk and all the local Groups Facebook pages have links to them there. It’s great fun to see the newsfeeds swell with photographs and posts after each weekends events, and we love to see what you have been up to around the Spice world. With the darker nights now approaching, you are perfectly positioned to make sure you keep the momentum up and reach a few of your own goals! If its health and fitness on your training list, Spice can help you with that with all the walks and activities on offer, which has got to be more fun than the gym, or jogging round the park. Get that bucket

list out (if you haven’t got one yet – write one today!) and decide what thing you are going to knock off it in the coming few weeks. Being a member of Spice brings so many opportunities on a plate for you, with people to do them with and all the organisation taken care of, so let’s do that Scuba Dive, Tandem Skydive or Fire Breathing workshop, and live life to the full. You’ll find it’s the usual story, get that first ‘pickle’ out of the jar, and the rest will tumble out no problem! Christmas and New Year fall in this quarter, and again, Spice will be here presenting you with a myriad of opportunities, parties, weekend breaks and holidays. However be fair warned they tend to book out soon, so remember the Spice motto – you snooze, you lose – you rest, you rust (lol) and get that Christmas Party booked and in your diary! We have selected a few festive events to give you an idea of what’s available, and do check out the websites. So, I guess- given I won’t be speaking to you until 2014 – I could be the very first to wish you a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year 2014!!

Donna Beanland Group: Manchester Group Member for: 2 years

Pip Gorringe Group: West Midlands Member for: 2 years

Why did you join Spice ? I joined Spice as I found that with a combination of work commitments, and my friends getting married, I was being restricted as people either could not afford to go out as much or had family ties and didn’t want to. I wanted to meet like minded people who wanted to have fun, were social and out to make friends and just have a great time. Spice fitted around my commitments and filled in the gaps!

Why did you join Spice? Because I was in desperate need of a social life. There are only so many times that you can stalk yourself on facebook...

What has been your favourite event? .I have struggled to pick one event. From clay pigeon shooting to Llama Trekking, from Hangover Hobbles to a day at the races I have loved all of my events and try to book on as much variety as possible...you have to try these things! What would be your advice for a new member? Stick with it and don’t be scared! We all had a first event and know how much courage it takes so embrace it, I promise it pays off. I went to a few events before I found my feet and felt comfortable. I nearly gave up after the first couple of events but then you see the same friendly faces and get to know people and, as much as it sounds a cliché, it does feel very much like an extension of my family with some of the friends I have made. I’ll never forget the advice someone gave me when joining Spice...look for freedom, friendship and fun! What is your funniest memory in Spice? Funniest memory...shouldn’t be admitting this as opening myself up to women driver comments! On the way to an event, this weekend, I followed the sat nav to the letter. When it told me to go right I did...up a public footpath. Knowing I was 800 yards from where I needed to be, and I was looking for a farmhouse, I carried on over what appeared to be a bridle path getting narrower and narrower. Still I carried on and ended up in a field. Now only 400 yards from where I needed to be I drove across the field and over a path only suitable for a 4x4 with its rocky road (God bless my Fiat 500). Still I continued and went across another bridle path before joining the road again. Looking back I do not know how I made it through the narrow public footpath but I did... never be late for an event, even if it means literally going across country!! Safe to say I followed someone else home... What is your life philosophy in one sentence? I always live by the philosophy that you only get one shot in life and you should take it. Never have regrets and live your life to the max. Most treasured belonging? What could I not live without my family and friends were my immediate choice, without hesitation. The more I thought about it the more I realised, rather sadly, that my phone needs to be on this list!

What has been your favourite event? The summer ball by far! I met some of my greatest friends at the summer ball so I will never forget it. What has been your most challenging event? I don’t do challenging events! I’m more of the sitting and drinking events kind of girl... What is your funniest memory in Spice? Getting up on stage with Jimmy Carr! Hilarious! What would be your advice for a new member? JOIN and don’t look back! Say hello to everyone and get yourself in the middle of it. No one at Spice is thinking ‘I don’t want to make any friends’. Everyone will welcome you, everyone will talk to you and everyone wants to be your friend! Have you been on a Spice UK Holiday? Not yet - watch this space! Have you an embarrassing Spice moment? You’re not a proper spicer if you haven’t made a complete tit of yourself, and I honestly wouldn’t know where to begin! What is your life philosophy in one sentence. I’d rather regret the things I did do, than the things I didn’t! Four people (alive or dead) you’d invite to your dream dinner party? NO ONE! More food for me :D ....... And possibly my daughter... I can never seem to get a babysitter... Your favourite movie? Phantom of the opera. Hands down. Most treasured belonging? My phone. I’m literally attached to it. Most people would assume my daughter, but no, it’s my phone.

Ian Lucas Group: West Midlands Member for: Over 10 years Why did you join Spice? I’d had heart surgery the year before and my New Year’s Resolution was ‘To Surprise Myself’. I trolled along to a preview at Warwick Arts Centre because I thought the listing for it was mad. I just fell in love with the whole idea. What has been your favourite event? I love the ones where you do surprise yourself – fire eating, abseiling (I HATE heights) hanggliding. My first event was snake fondling. What is your funniest memory in Spice? Almost getting married by accident in Las Vegas when a bride turned up at my door ... What would be your advice for a new member? Don’t censor yourself. Have you been on a Spice UK Holiday? Have I ever – highlights being Sri Lanka, the Rockies, Grand Canyon rafting experience (I hate getting wet and hate camping, but it was an absolute blast) Moscow/St Petersburg (where the Tour Leader got arrested in the Kremlin for unfurling a Spice Banner), new year in New York and most recently Iceland (the Northern Lights were awesome, and we met Bill Oddie by accident) Have you an embarrassing Spice moment? I represented SPICE on a competition on my first holiday on a Caribbean Cruise where the MC dared contestants to wear a bra and remove our ‘pants’ – fortunately the lovely Louise Davies reminded me that ‘Pants’ was American for trousers and not underwear, before I made a complete spectacle of myself ... What is your life philosophy in one sentence? Break hearts, wind and rules Four people (alive or dead) you’d invite to your dream dinner party? All 11 Doctor Whos (technically 1 person...), Bear Grylls (he brings his own drink...) Lizzie Windsor (so she could drop the airs and graces and leave that dreadful Philip behind), Bobby Farrell of Boney M (I learnt all my dance moves from him!) Your favourite movie? The Wizard Of Oz – but Brokeback Mountain really broke my heart. I’ve never been the same since.

It won’t be long now before the festive season is once again in full swing, and obviously Spice will be presenting you with a veritable array of amazing parties and weekends away packed full of festive cheer! Here’s a brief listing of some of the things you could consider to lighten up the dark nights, and make

sure you see 2012 out in style. It’s no way an exhaustive list, with many many meals and other holiday themed events, so as ever, keep on eye on the websites, but here’s a glimpse of some of the balls, Parties and Breaks available to you over the holidays… All details on your local Spice Group Website.

Neal’s page Welcome to the autumn edition of the Spice Yorkshire newsletter. I think we can safely say by the colour the leaves are turning on my most recent Spice ramble that autumn is here. What a great summer though, starting with Center Parcs and so many weekends away since I’ve lost count. Our weekends away are always fabulous fun as they allow Spice members to get to know each other over a longer period. With that in mind we’ve already added a few for next year including York Fort, Beverley Friary and our Lakes Activities weekend and there’s even an Easter party weekend in Newcastle. Talking of parties, as the year end approaches we’ve got plenty of celebrations including the Yorkshire Christmas Party on 21st December, The Yorkshire New Year’s Ceilidh Party on 31st December and our Christmas Santa shuffles, with Sheffield’s having an after party. We’ve also moved the Spice in the City regular meet-ups in Sheffield and Leeds to new venues with a fresh after party venue. The newsletter is full of new social events including dining in York, Leeds, Wakefield, Huddersfield, Harrogate and Sheffield (belly dancer included); also pub meets in Wakefield, York, Leeds, Huddersfield and Sheffield. In fact our social calendar is bursting and there’s a great selection of comedy and live music nights. If you have recently joined Spice and have not had a chance to take part in any or many events we, know how daunting it can be so with that in mind we have a new individual “Prospective & New members” evening for you starting in Sheffield and Leeds, so please look out for these and we will be able to more easily help you take your first steps in Spice. Lastly it’s my Birthday in October so do all come along to the Fright Night and Meal in Sheffield on Sunday the 27th if you can make it. See you out and about in the near future.

Welcome to new members You’ve taken the first steps and joined Spice; the next step is to come along to your first event. I know this can be a daunting prospect when you don’t know anyone else in the group but there’s no need to be apprehensive, Spice are a friendly bunch. Most of us come along on our own to events so we’re all well used to meeting and welcoming new people. A great way of getting into Spice is by booking your first events right away and getting your first event “under your belt”. Even better is to try a weekend away and get to know a smaller group of people really well. If you’ve not been to a new members evening we hold them every month (see overleaf for dates) so do make an effort to come to one of these, and please next time I am on an event, come up and say hello so I can put a face to the name! If you have any queries at all, please give us a call in the office and we will always do our utmost to help you.

Contact us The Spice office is open from 10am until 5pm Monday to Friday except on public holidays. You can contact us on 0845 094 22 00 during these hours or leave a message on the 24 hour answerphone. A free social evening open to all existing, old, new and prospective Spice members We now have a pub social evening monthly in Sheffield, Leeds and York with a good turn-out of members and non-members. This evening is a social for any members or would be Spice members in the surrounding area. Why not come along and join us? It’s a relaxed social evening where you can meet up with members and gives us a chance to catch up with some friends you’ve met on events and also some new members. Have a chat over a drink, a general chin wag and discuss which other events to go on or you’ve been on, swap photos or even arrange transport to an event. The evening is open to anyone.

From November we will be changing the format of these evenings in Leeds and Sheffield to include a presentation… This is your chance to learn all about us, our history, what we do, how we do it and why Spice can provide you with lots of new friends and an exciting new door to your social life as well as new interests you never knew existed. We will cover the basic nuts and bolts of Spice including our membership fees, structure and what we do in Spice. How we do it and how being a member allows you to be a part of and partake in a vast selection of local, area, national, and even international activities which are on offer at all times. After the short overview and presentation, there will be a chance to ask as many questions as you like as well as taking a look at some of the activities our members get up to. There will be a special joining offer and/or probably some kind of promotion which you will be eligible for should you decide to join on the night, which varies month to month. However there is absolutely no obligation to join on the night because this is simply your chance to meet a few of us and learn what we are all about. (You can join at any time online 24/7). After the presentation and offer, we'll mix and mingle a little with everyone and then at around 9PM we will expect a few more members to arrive when we have the second part of our evening. This is aimed at New Members who have recently joined. We'll explain what are the ideal up and coming events as a new member, how to get involved and what other events to look out for. What are the best events when starting from scratch and how to really get involved with us. How to go about attending those events and of course all the other many useful things you should know as a spice member. This part of the evening will be dedicated to helping you get the most out of your Spice membership. It includes how to make use our web site, newsletters and all the other Spice websites and of course the all-important booking processes for events. SPICE FREE PREVIEW AND NEW MEMBER EVENINGS (If you are not yet a member, there’s no need to book, just turn up. Members please book)

Recommended New Members Events We understand it can be very daunting when you are a new member, or thinking about joining Spice. To help you, we have put together a New Members’ Pathway that guides you through the best route to getting out and about, experiencing new things and making lots of new friends. This is just a suggested pathway; you are of course welcome to dive into Spice on any event. Look out also for our New Members Easy Rambles for a gentle introduction to walking.

We have booked 4 tanks, each of which take a crew of 3 Spice members who will be with their tank throughout (so no waiting around on this one!) We start with a practice session, where we put the tank through its paces on the 1 mile track and firing range. We will alternate the 3 positions in the tank so that each person gets a chance to drive, a chance to load the gun and a chance to fire. The gun is adapted to fire paintball ammunition, and can be fired with the hatch up or down. In battle, of course the hatch has to be down and aimed by periscope. After the practice, the four tanks will do battle, with each tank attempting to out manoeuvre and “knock out” the others with their huge, paintball firing guns.

This is a unique opportunity to learn the ultimate medieval art, with The Knights of Middle England. Our day is run by Karl Ude-Martinez who has over 12 years of experience in performing live jousting shows all over Europe. For obvious safety reasons, we will not be allowed to actually hit each other with our jousts as death often results from that – and such bravery is not deemed culturally appropriate to the modern age! However, they use a quitaine (or dummy) to take the impact.

Rock Weaseling Day .. scramble, squeeze, wriggle & giggle!

Sunday 20th October from 10:30am to 3pm The Roaches, Nr Leek, Staffordshire (ST13 8TY) 10:30am to 3pm £17 Member, £22 Guest Mick Cornfield for Spice West Midlands

Your chance to discover your inner child and go exploring. Weasling is sometimes called caving for claustrophobics and it involves wearing old clothes and getting dirty, some of the same skills as caving but in daylight and fresh air. Starting at the lower end of the Roaches the idea is to get through as many tight squeezes as you can, nothing too small, but great fun. The Roaches are tailor made for this activity being an area of large boulders in a jumble, some we have given names to the drop, the porthole and the chimney to name but a few, follow the leader in and out, under and over and up and down. Old clothes a hat and gloves will be essential

Microlighting Experience Flight enjoy a 20 minute flight above Ashbourne

Metrodome is close to the M1 so is easy to access from all over our region. Don't miss this fantastic experience at this bargain price. Ever fancied trying a little scuba diving? Did you join spice to try new experiences? Want to do something you can boast about to your workmates? If you’ve answered yes then book this now! This is a basic introduction to Scuba diving in the confines of a heated swimming pool, designed to introduce the complete beginner to the underwater world. You will be introduced to the equipment and learn the all important safety points. Then it’s off to the pool as it’s time to get wet, where you will get an hours’ time to put into practice everything that you have learnt. If you find any treasure amongst the wrecks, make sure you keep it to yourself! Our course tonight is run by an old Spice favourite; Smudge of ProScuba Diving College & his team. This could be the start of a brand new hobby, or just a one off experience; either way it will be a day that you’ll never forget. You will need to take along your swimwear, a towel, and an old T-shirt for use in the pool. (It stops the straps from rubbing your back). There will be a medical form to fill in on the evening. Most dive schools do mass courses, and only have you in the water for 45mins. We give you one-on-one for up to an hour and half in a 4m pool – most dive schools would sell this at up to £45. ProScuba run a variety of different dive courses so if you get hooked you can even sign up for your discounted PADI Open Water Diver Course - just ask for details on the night. And they operate one of this area's only free dive clubs and still teach all their courses on individually tailored programs and schedules. Smudge is the UK's busiest independent dive instructor, with over 108 awards for underwater photography. He also broke a world record at the end of last year, and has gained several prestigious awards for his efforts in teaching scuba. These are the kind of events that many of us joined Spice to do. Come along and try something new!

A Big Day Out in The Peaks Mountain Biking A Fabulous ride taking in some of the most beautiful hills and dales

Date: Place: Meet: Time: Cost: Host:

Sunday 10th November 2013 Hassop Station, Bakewell (DE45 1NW) P&D car park 9:30am £16 Member, £18 Guest Jeremy Sainter on 07974 967209

This was a very popular ride the last time we rode it. We will be starting from Hassop Station on the disused section of the main London-Manchester Midland Railway Line between Bakewell and Buxton which is now the Monsal Trail. After a short ride along the trail to get our legs spinning we will head up and over Longstone Edge to Eyam. We then meander along tracks and lanes to Tideswell where we will stop for a bite of lunch. But don’t worry there is still plenty of riding to be done as we head to Millers Dale and the beautiful Wye Valley. If you go down there has to be an up; so we climb to King Sterndale to follow the Priest’s way and the beautiful Horseshoe Dale. We then ride to Priestfield for the final 10 km off road section back to Hassop station and a well earned cake and a cuppa in the cafe. A great day out in some of the most beautiful and scenic areas of the Peaks, with the added bonus of some great mountain biking. Please be aware this is a strenuous ride; you should be comfortable going both up and down steep hills without the need for a respirator. You should also be comfortable with rocky technical terrain. This is definitely not a beginner’s ride. The ride is guided and supported by a qualified Mountain bike guide. Grade: 2; Distance: 28 miles on some of the
