SPRING 2017

So Spring is here! After a pretty tame winter (compared to last year anyway and said from a comfortable office in Manchester so apologies to anyone in the outlying reaches of the country where you may disagree!)

Dianne Livingstone Spice London

With the promise of less rain, warmer temperatures and longer evenings hopefully everyone is starting to feel a bit more like getting out and about and really making the most of your membership. Over the coming pages you’ll find some interesting articles (hopefully) including a reflection on the ski season which due to an absence of snow generally across Europe it has still out another great year for Spice and a look forward to next year – although we have released some of the ski trips we are still working on others so do keep an eye on the Spice UK and your local group websites over the next few weeks for when these are ready to book! Another big set of events for Spice over the summer are our weekend breaks available now for you to book including Dragon Boating, Edinburgh Festival, Murder Mystery, Sailing, etc. There are also many, many more weekends available around to country (to many to list here) so never be without something to look forwards to!

Richard Coulter Spice West Midlands

Lauren Fawkes Spice Manchester & Yorkshire

You will have probably noticed that as yet there is no replacement for Center Parcs. Since announcing that we are no longer able to visit CP on our national get together we have been searching for suitable alternatives and have visited a few sites but unfortunately nothing is yet ready to go – so rather than rushing into something we have decided to take a little time and give it a year off ready for a fresh start in 2018! Also, congratulations to Spice West Midlands and Scotland as both groups are 25 years old - so I am sure you all wish them a Happy Birthday this year! Whatever your interests the Spice programme keeps delivering so get booking and give yourself something to look forward to over the next few months.

Ian Purvis Spice UK

Name: Jacquie Allix Which Group are you a member of? Spice London, although I mostly consider myself a “National Travelling Spicer”, as I do so many regional events! How long have you been a Spice member? 11 years Why did you join Spice? I went travelling abroad for a year when I was 31, had the time of my life in New Zealand doing some crazy adrenaline type events. So when I came back to the UK, I wanted more from my weekends than just the usual pub/meal out lifestyle. I actually only really joined Spice for those kind of activities at the beginning..... but then it started! What has been your favourite event? I absolutely love the bunkbarn/YHA weekends – very good value for money, activity/walk of some sort, chill out and chat with your friends from around the country (and get to know others better), and just a great chance to explore a new place in the UK too. I know so much of the UK now through my Spice adventures. What has been your most challenging event? I do like a good challenge if I’m honest, so that’s normally the draw for me! However, the biggest challenge was pulling off a third consecutive victory in 2012 as part of the Spice London team in Dragon Boat Racing. We were a colourful group of neon-tutu-wearing southerners, cheekily rocking up to take on the numerous Spice West Midlands teams on the river Avon. When “competitive”, Dragon Boat Racing is a hard rowing race and my goodness we pushed it - it killed my arm muscles for days. Fabulous weekend though - totally recommend. Oh and it was my birthday that day too, double whammy! What is your funniest memory in Spice? I laugh my head off every time I go on a Spice event! Name: Maureen Fearon Which Group are you a member of? Manchester How long have you been a Spice member? I joined around 1998 Why did you join Spice? To experience unique events and the kind of activities my friends didn’t want to do, from basketball, pub quizzes to Trapeze What has been your favourite event? The comedy nights What has been your most challenging event? Trapeze because I was scared of heights at the time & I mastered climbing a rope What is your funniest memory in Spice? The comedy night featuring Adam Bloom – we cried laughing & my tummy hurt What would be your advice for a new member? Build your confidence so that you can enjoy all the wonderful Name: Yvonne Burton Which Group are you a member of? West Midlands How long have you been a Spice member? 4years. Why did you join Spice? Moved home and needed to make a new life and meet new people. What has been your favourite event? That’s a hard one so many choose from but I do particularly love your party nights. What has been your most challenging event? My most challenging would be the rambles after having hips and knee replacements! But I did it with a smile on my face What is your funniest memory in Spice? My funniest moment in Spice would have to be on my first ramble falling backwards in the mud!

However, I have to particularly mention the hilarious Loony Dook experience as part of the Spice Scotland Hogmanay weekend – just a gentle dip dressed as a pirate in the freezing Firth of Forth on New Year’s Day – as you do! Even funnier when a certain Tom Slattery dressed as an elf, got a bit excited as he picked his way into the sea, tripped, and did a full kamikaze submerge! What would be your advice for a new member? Dive straight into one of the cheaper/value for money weekends where you will meet a lot of people at once. Remember you can book on any event on any of the regional groups, so have a good look, be brave and get travelling. One of my first events was a weekend white water rafting in a remote part of Scotland with Spice Yorkshire. Coming from Kent, that was a long way to travel, particularly when you don’t know anyone! Have you been on a Spice UK Holiday? I’ve been on the Turkey Chillout and a few ski trips, including the now infamous Spice Thames Valley “bus fire trip” of 2011 ….don’t worry, no-one was harmed! Have you had an embarrassing Spice moment? The way I was “introduced” to some Spice Manchester members at a certain Center Parcs weekend – pirate (there’s a pattern emerging here), naughty school boys, water pistols, and finally after much hilarity and chase around the venue, being bundled to the floor to retrieve said water pistol! The rest is history, and these guys are now some of my best friends. What is your life philosophy in one sentence. Have the courage to go for your goals and progress your life – we really do have only one of them! Welcome to Spice! x

events and people. Try new things, get talking, you may make some valuable friendships. Have you been on a Spice UK Holiday? No Have you had an embarrassing Spice moment? No-wow in all the years no, how brilliant is that? Demonstrates the quality of all that is Spice What is your life philosophy? We have so much untapped potential so try something new and smile... Over the years I have had so many great times with Spice. It is a great organisation which is so useful for all people going through different stages of life, whether it’s the good or the bad times of life. There is a great collection of different types of people in the membership, attracting like minded people and there is so much fascinating learning through the interesting events. I recommend it where ever I can. It is run with integrity, and caring – caring for providing the best quality events as well as truly caring for people. Over the years it has helped so many people and for some, it has been life changing, I have seen magic happen. Applause to all the staff as they make it all look so easy, rarely do you see what goes into making it all happen. Keep up the great work! What would be your advice for a new member? My advice for a new member would be to “Get out there, join in so you can make lots happy memories. Have you been on a Spice UK Holiday? Not a Spice UK holiday but I went to Milan with Spice West Midlands I loved it there. Have you had an embarrassing Spice moment? No embarrassing moment (yet!) What is your life philosophy in one sentence?Live life to the full. As you never know what’s round the next corner. Be kind caring as you never know what people have been through...

Our Spice Weekends Spice have a long tradition of weekends away for members so take a look through our latest UK holiday offers and take advantage of going away with your Spice chums at some great prices! With hundreds of weekends across the groups incorporating many different activities there has got to be something that takes your fancy. We have socialable get togethers like bunkbarns and hostel weekends, national city breaks and European ones too. Our themed balls are legendary and you are guaranteed to have a good time and most of your balls and party nights can have the main event and events either side. All the events mentioned on in these pages are available to view on your local sites.

Sailing Weekends EnCompass Sailing have been providing sailing events for Spice members for the past decade. We have introduced over 1200 Spice members to sailing many of whom return year after year. Some have also caught the bug sufficiently to become boat owners, or to sail the oceans in some of the more challenging races such as the Clipper. Our aim on every weekend is for our crew to have amazing weekends whatever their level of experience. Details are available on website and you can also sail the Inner Hebrides out of Oban - there’s nothing like a night moored at Tobermory.

Walking Weekends Our walking weekends are a big feature of the Spice offerings and many of these are run for us by the boys at Walkwise who have been working alongside Spice for almost 20 years. These fabulously sociable weekends are a mainstay of our calendar and take place all over the UK. Dependent on numbers there can be up to a choice of 3 different walks per day to choose from suiting the more

sedate walkers through to those looking for a real challenge.

Bunkbarn Weekends Our Bunkbarn weekends are renowned for their value for money and of course the sociable aspect. The general format is 2 nights in hostel type accommodation with cooked breakfasts and sometimes an evening meal and often come with a guided walk/ramble each day. They are great fun with everyone mucking in to help cleaning up after breakfasts or even cooking sausages or bacon for 30 to 50 people! These weekends have taken place in and around the country, please take a look at your local group website for further details.

Masham Beer and BBQ Weekend A strong favourite with the Northern Groups (and a few hardened Southern travellers) with around 60 members camping just outside the lovely village of Masham. Again cooked breakfasts on both days, a fabulous BBQ cooked by the hardworking Spice Yorkshire team and a Spice exclusive tour of the wonderful Theakston Brewery with a free beer bar where you can pull your own pints – the favourite beer is usually ‘Old Peculiar’

Edinburgh Festival For one month each year the city of Edinburgh plays host to biggest arts event in the world - The Edinburgh Festival. When seeking the best experience there’s nothing like local knowledge to guide you through the tricky process of selecting the best things to do. Spice Scotland organise an August Bank Holiday break like no other - over the weekend you have the opportunity to attend many shows and extras including the Military Tattoo, walk Arthurs Seat, picnic in Princes St. Gardens, dance at a real Scottish Ceilidh, enjoy fine dining and see some of the best shows the Fringe Festival has to offer. Over the 12 years Spice Scotland have been running these trips over 1300 members have come along - many come back too, time and time again - it’s an experience like no other.

Murder Mystery Weekend Our murder mystery weekends are a Spice classic. It’s your chance to become Hercule Poirot or Agatha Christie. Everyone has a role to play and you may dress up to get into character. If you like a bit of drama in your life? Then this murder mystery break could be for you! The murder normally takes place over dinner. Guests will be entertained with a ‘who dunnit’ style fun evening including quizzes, competitions, limericks and prizes – all with a suitable theme for the evening. The scene will be

set by the actors over dinner, and you will have to keep a sharp eye out for clues to solve the mystery. A prize is given to the person who can guess who did the murder.

Horse Riding Our Horse Riding weekends are set in lovely rural setting with a variety of different standards of horses to suit complete beginners to the more advanced riders amongst us. Each member is matched up with a Horse/ Pony for the weekend. You will have the full experience of riding out with the group including helping around the stable yard grooming the horses, tacking up and to muck out - yes, that’s right!!!! poo picking but this is of course completely optional.

Spice Scotland and West Midlands groups are 25 years old! Happy Birthday to both and there is always merriment when it comes to a party and we Spicers know how to celebrate. Spice West Midlands are having a party night to mark the occasion in September keep your eyes peeled as details to follow. However Spice Scotland are having a themed Summer Ball 17 June - A Bond with Scotland. This will be a truly fabulous night with loads of fun surprises, and a great celebration of all that Spice represents. The event gives you a chance to dress up and we say the more sparkles the better.

Coordinator’s Corner Welcome to our Spring 2017 newsletter which gives you an overview of lots of the Spice events coming up in the next three months – as always, full information is on the website and we always recommend checking out the web write ups to get the full picture. The Spice office’s favourite time of the year is fast approaching; the nights are getting lighter and the weather seems to be full of promise of balmy summer nights and days ahead. And of course with the better weather our sights turn to lots more outdoor activities with watersports, camping, narrowboating, evening rambles, BBQ’s, rounders, bike rides, outdoor theatre and much more to whet your appetite. We have recently added several first-time events including Coasteering at Flamborough, Stand Up Paddleboarding and the chance to take part in an archaeological dig to the programme! April and May are also our most prolific months for Bank Holidays with three bank holiday weekends to look forward to and we have plenty of weekends away available if you feel like getting away from it all; however you need to be quick if you want to book as they are already filling fast. You can quickly take a look at all our forthcoming weekend breaks by going to the events page on the website www.spiceyorks.com and selecting UK Breaks on the drop down list of categories. We also have some fabulous holidays which you can see on the Spice UK website at www.spiceuk.com with our signature trip White Water Rafting in the Grand Canyon, a Vietnam & Cambodia Adventure, Summer Chillout Holidays, Walking Holidays and Iceland Discovery. Looking ahead, our ski trips for the 2017/2018 season are starting to appear kicked off with a Christmas & New Year trip to Banff, Canada. The combined ski trip for Manchester & Yorkshire is a first for us as we travel to Morzine in the in the middle of one of the most extensive ski regions in the Alps: Les Portes du Soleil where we have a Spice exclusive Chalet for the week. Hope to see you out and about on an event very soon! Lauren

Welcome to new members You’ve taken the first steps and joined Spice; the next step is to come along to your first event. We know this can be a daunting prospect when you don’t know anyone else in the group but there’s no need to be apprehensive, Spice are a friendly bunch. Most of us come along on our own to events so we’re all well used to meeting and welcoming new people. A great way of getting into Spice is by booking your first events right away and getting your first event “under your belt”. Spice Preview Nights in Leeds, Sheffield and York… Our Preview Nights are a great way to make your start with SPICE and the easiest way of meeting a few new people and finding out how it all works. We also run a free raffle for all who attend (existing members too) with events as the prizes – just to add a touch of Spice to the evening. The plan is to welcome everyone, talk through the basics of Spice, and give you more info on the coming programme and an opportunity to book on events if you like. You can of course book in the usual ways (phone, web, or post - but remember the Spice motto – “You snooze, you lose – you rest, you rust!” Jonathan and enthusiastic volunteers will be on hand to answer any queries you may have and there may be an opportunity to watch the Spice DVD. Remember, everyone who attends is in the same boat so don’t be nervous about attending, come on your own (lots of people do) or come with a friend. Call us to book in advance or just turn up - either way, do come and see what you’ve been missing!!

Leeds

York

Dates: Tuesday 11th April Tuesday 14th June

Dates: Tuesday 23rd May Tuesday 11th July

Dates: Tuesday 25th April Tuesday 25th July

Place: The Old Queens Head, 40 Pond Hill, Sheffield (S1 2BG)

Place: Parkside Tavern, Merrion Street, Leeds (LS2 8JE)

Place: The Royal Oak, 18 Goodramgate, York (YO1 7LG)

The Old Queens Head is right alongside Sheffield Bus station and adjacent to Ponds Forge International Sports Centre on Pond Hill. The nearest tram stop is Fitzalan Square / Ponds Forge just a 5 minute walk away. The railway station is a 10 minute walk. There is some street parking on Pond Hill and more on Pond Street, or you can use the car park at Ponds Forge or the Castle Gate Q-Park next to the Travelodge. We meet in the area to the right as you enter through the main door from Pond Hill.

Parkside Tavern is the mock Tudor building on Merrion Street near its junction with New Briggate and alongside St John’s Gardens. The nearest outdoor parking is the Cross Belgrave St. car park. Indoor car parking is in the St John’s Centre car park on Merrion St., or the Citipark Car Park on Merrion Way is a little further away but cheaper. Why not get a drink from the bar downstairs when you arrive and then join us upstairs?

The Royal Oak is at the Monk Bar end of Goodramgate. There is no parking along Goodramgate so use one of the car parks just outside of the walled shopping centre. We meet in the upstairs function room which is through the inner door and then up the stairs on your right. Why not get a drink from the bar downstairs when you arrive and then join us upstairs?

For all locations we meet from 7:45pm. Please try to be there by 8pm for the talk.

Can’t make it? Don’t worry … Don’t worry if you can’t make it to any of our preview nights – it’s not essential! You can always find out more about Spice on our website at www.spiceyorks.com. Or give us a call during office hours on 0161 864 2554 where we’ll be happy to answer any questions whether they are general ones about Spice or about a specific event. If you’re not already a member you can join either online or by phone and get started! Once you have your membership number you can login to the website to book events. The next page has lots of suggestions of great events to start you off, but there aren’t any set rules – just choose something that looks fun or interesting and get involved. Recommended New Members Events We understand it can be very daunting when you are a new member, or thinking about joining Spice. To help you, we have put together a New Members’ Pathway that guides you through the best route to getting out and about, experiencing new things and making lots of new friends. This is just a suggested pathway; you are of course welcome to dive into Spice on any event. Look out also for our Easy Rambles for a gentle introduction to walking – walks are a great way of meeting a few people.

Rambles - Grading System

Spice Rambles Rambles: Essential Information All Spice walks are designed to be fun, enjoyable, and above all, safe. All the walk leaders we use are experienced and carry first aid and emergency equipment but all walkers must ensure that they are properly equipped for the conditions. If you are a newcomer to Spice Rambles, please feel free to contact the walk leaders through the Spice Office. The leaders will be happy to discuss the appropriate type of clothing and equipment for use on Spice walks but here are a few general points to bear in mind. No jeans or trainers, please. Any Spice Ramble of Grade 3 or harder may involve walking over open country, not necessarily over welldefined paths, and it should not be assumed that you are going for a stroll in the park. You should wear warm clothing, preferably in the form of several layers, and all walkers must bring waterproof jackets and trousers. Happily, accidents and injuries are extremely rare but "injuries" are often caused by ill-fitting boots or inappropriate socks. A relatively minor injury out in the wilds can result in the walk being curtailed, so please ensure that you are happy with the fit of your boots and socks. Bring liquids and a packed lunch. Even if the write up suggests a convenient pub stop, please do not take this for granted. Pubs have been known to be full or even closed. A Spice ramble is not a race. The leader's responsibility is to ensure the safety of all the party, so he will often have to spend time at the back of the group. All walkers should ensure that they do not lose contact with the leader. If you can't see the leader, please stop and wait. (Neither Spice nor the walk leaders can be held responsible if a walker sustains an injury whilst out of touch with the leader.) Please be ready on time. There will be over 20 walkers taking part in a typical Spice ramble. The time specified in the newsletter is the Start time. If you are not ready to start walking promptly, you will be inconveniencing all those who had the foresight to get ready on time. Some rambles give a postcode near to the meet point; these are given for guidance only and members should not rely on Satnav systems to find the precise meet point for a walk. Always take the printed directions and a map with you. Please remember that Spice cannot be held responsible for the security of the car parking. Please ensure that you take sensible precautions to protect your car and belongings. Well behaved dogs are welcome on most walks unless otherwise stated, but must be pre-booked - please write it on your booking form or in the notes when booking online if you are bringing dogs. It is the owner's responsibility to ensure that the dog is kept under control on a fixed lead with a length of no more than two metres at all times, and is not allowed to cause a nuisance. You must bring a suitable lead and use it. Dogs must not be allowed off the lead at any time unless agreed with the walk leader after consultation with the other walkers.

Facebook We have a Facebook group for our walkers and walk leaders to share News, Photos, Gossip, Events and all things ‘walk’ related. Please follow the link below & join if you are one of our many, many walkers! www.facebook.com/groups/SpiceYorkshireWalkers

Ramble: Trollers Gill A classic Yorkshire walk

Date: Place: Cost: Host:

Sunday 9th April at 10:30am The Village Green , Burnsall (BD23 6BU) £5 Member, £7 Guest Roy Layton on 07801 070526

Join Roy and Linda for this grade three moderate rated, eight mile walk, which has only a few hilly bits (none too steep) and is one of the classic Yorkshire walks. The beautiful village of Burnsall, where the walk starts and finishes, boasts a Maypoled village green, one of the best river bridges in the Dales and, oh yes, a pub! The walk starts by following the river Wharfe down to How Gill before climbing gently to Trollers Gill. The ‘Gill of the Trolls’ with its overhanging limestone walls is said to be haunted by ‘a huge cat like creature with shiny red eyes’, but don’t worry it will probably be scared of Spicers. Other points of interest on the walk are a broached dam wall and ancient lead mines. Grade: 3; Distance: 8 miles

Sunday 16th April at 10:30am Malham, Yorkshire Dales (BD23 4DA) £5 Member, £7 Guest Roy Layton on 07801 070526

Join Roy and Linda for this traditional to Spice 'first walk of spring.' Spring time is the best time to visit Malham, one of the most popular villages in the Dales. The tourist droves have not yet reached summertime saturation levels and the wild garlic valley near the beginning of the route makes your mouth (and eyes) water. This 8 mile route is the classic Malham walk which tours the main features of the area, Gordale Scar, Malham Tarn and Malham Cove in an anti-clockwise direction. The route up the waterfall at Gordale Scar involves a little bit of scrambling but it is well within the capabilities of most people, if there is too much water in the stream we will walk around. Ring Roy if you are unsure about this section of the walk. Grade: 3; Distance: 8 miles

An early ascent takes us over the modest hills to the East of Bakewell to view the Duke of Devonshire’s famous pad (Chatsworth House) set in the neighbouring Derwent Valley. With evidence of prehistoric settlement along the way, we will visit the Chatsworth Estate Village of Edensor. The village was created by the 6th Duke of Devonshire between 1838 and 1842, allegedly because the original village spoilt his view from the house. We then follow the River Derwent South for a few miles with fine views of the big house. At Rowsley we start the second ascent of the day up through the woods to Calton Pastures, and then a nice final descent takes us back to Bakewell.

What a good way to burn off a few calories before putting them all back on tomorrow, when you open your Easter eggs! Come dressed for the weather, but there will be no extra cost for transport, as all clues will be found within a reasonable distance of city centre.

..a great way to get started

Dates: Saturday 22nd April Saturday 3rd June Place: Black Rocks, Matlock # Time: 10am Cost: £34 Member, £39 Guest Many members would love to do an abseil, but are too petrified to book the ones we normally offer. After seeing Mark Fenton's ability to gently coax even the most frightened, or physically disadvantaged people into achieving brilliant outdoor feats, I started these special sessions which have proved extremely popular! You just need to bring a little faith, and the will to succeed! The feeling you’ll get from your success is well worth it all. Mark will get you to overcome any fears by building up your confidence gradually. First we get used to the equipment and how to use it on a few very short descents, before tackling some bigger abseils if you feel able. You’ll not be forced to do anything you are uncomfortable with, or feel stupid if you back out of any stage. So go on…you’ve nothing to lose but your fears!

Includes: tour and drink Extras: additional drinks and food Magic Rock Brewing Company is the result of three people’s passion for beer - brothers Richard and Jonny Burhouse, aided by head brewer Stuart Ross. Come and join us for a tour of this brewery which will last about 40 minutes and include a drink. The tour starts promptly at 2pm so we will meet in the bar for a pre-tour drink from 1:30pm. After the tour we will visit some other pubs and find somewhere to eat to soak up the ale around 5pm. The brewery is located on the Willow Park Business Centre.

Rising from the valley floor, the observation cars transport you in comfort and safety and allow stunning views of the Derwent Valley and surrounding Peak District. Tank Battle Experience .. challenge your fellow teams to a tank paintball battle!

Date: Sunday 21st May 9:30am to 12pm Place: Lutterworth, Leicestershire # (LE17 6NW) Cost: £95 Member, £99 Guest This event has had great feedback. We have booked 4 tanks, each of which take a crew of 3 Spice members who will be with their tank throughout (so no waiting around on this one!) We start with a practice session, where we put the tank through its paces on the 1 mile track and firing range. We will alternate the 3 positions in the tank so that each person gets a chance to drive, a chance to load the gun and a chance to fire. The gun is adapted to fire paintball ammunition, and can be fired with the hatch up or down. In battle, of course the hatch has to be down and aimed by periscope. After the practice, the four tanks will do battle, with each tank attempting to out manoeuvre and “knock out” the others with their huge, paintball firing guns. For this part, teams will not be able to switch positions, so you will need to decide between you or toss a coin to decide who will drive, who will load and who will fire.

A short 20-25 minute briefing session will guide you through what is required to exit the aircraft, freefall from up to 15,000ft and land a modern high-performance square canopy after a lengthy canopy ride. After your training, you will be fully kitted up with all necessary equipment before boarding the aircraft for the 20-30 minute climb to altitude, giving you plenty of time to admire the scenery – or come to terms with your nerves or fear of heights! Ski Reflections & Expectations As I write this our last two ski trips are about to depart bring to a close the Spice ski season for 2016/17 – but what a season it was! Almost 400 Spicers took to the slopes with us on 14 ski trips starting with New Year in Alpe D’Huez and finishing in Meribel. We have skied in Italy, France and Andorra – the Dolomiti Super Ski, Monterosa Ski, Paradiski, the Espace Killy & Trois Vallees, Chamonix Valley & the Alberg. Kat, our new Thames Valley & Solent Coordinator took out her first ski trip and although it certainly wasn’t her first Spice ski experience it was business as usual and a great time was had by her group as it was by everyone on all the Spice group trips as your coordinators took the best care of you as always! The feedback has been amazing and it looks like you all had a lot of fun…you have your photos and memories to look back on but what are your stories? What’s your favourite memory? We have loved all the photos that have been shared and liked on Facebook but would love to see more so please go to the Spice UK ski group and share with everyone. We have a very active Spice Facebook group for Skiers (Search on “Spice Ski UK Group”) which is a fun way to break the ice and keep in touch with your ski pals. And if you are thinking of joining us next year – watch out for those early booking discounts, and to secure the trip you want. The snow for European ski resorts was late yet again and has been a bit hit and miss throughout the season which make planning a season of trips for 2017/18 a bit of a nightmare but thanks to the fantastic efforts in resort of the snow making teams this did not deter our groups who took up the activity with real zeal and enthusiasm which is the Spice way. There were the usual knocks and bruises to be expected when throwing yourself down a mountain and a couple of slightly more debilitating but everyone is back safe and sound now and looking forward to next season (fingers crossed I haven’t spoken too soon for our last couple of trips!). Looking forwards with expectation we already have a number of ski trips in place for 2017/18 but still have a more to confirm which will be done over the next few weeks. One big announcement is for the time Spice South West & South Wales have their very own trip to Les Duex Alpes – it’s just a small one in an exclusive chalet so if you fancy joining Kate for the week get it booked quickly! Other resorts already confirmed include Alpe D’Huez, St. Christoph, Morzine, Andorra, Verbier, Val D’Isere, Les Arcs and for the first time a Christmas and New Year trip to Canada and the Big Three resort of Banff. Keep an eye on the web for more details in the next few weeks!

Why do we love it so much? Well it just seems to have all the ingredients that make for a great Spice event. It’s something that anyone can be good at. It involves sociable teamwork, fun competition, and mild adventure. It’s also about lots of fun and laughter – and an excuse for a great party!

What is Dragon Boat Racing? Well, for a start, it’s the national sport of Hong Kong and is rapidly gaining popularity all over the world. It involves teams of up to 16 paddling furiously in long, colourful boats to the beat of an “on board” drummer. Can anyone do it? Yes they can! We try to put the teams together in a fairly random fashion, so you don’t have to know anyone beforehand. And we like the fact that success is more about timing and working together as a team than about strength, athletic ability or experience – so there are often surprise victories along the way. Is it safe? The team who run the day for us are the most experienced that we can find and have run our dragon boating safely for over 20 years. In case of an incident, we have a certified inshore rescue team on the water throughout and strict safety procedures are observed including buoyancy aids. What about the weather? We are usually blessed by glorious sunshine. However, there have been years when the heavens have opened! However, the spirit of Spice prevails and the show goes on with help from the shelter of our awnings and the magic continues regardless. So don’t miss the opportunity to take part in one of the most famous dates in the Spice calendar. This year the dates for your diary are Friday 14 July (Camping) Saturday 15 July (Camping & Party) and Sunday 16 July (Race Day). Look out for all the details in your local Spice Website!

Boat Day!

Is it a day event or a weekend away? It can be either. Many people do make a whole weekend of it as there is camping at Pershore Rugby Club on Friday and Saturday nights and a Spice party in the town on Saturday. But Sunday is when the event itself takes place and lots of members just come along for that day – either to take part or to support the teams from the banks.

MARK WARNER WATERSPORTS

Highlighted

8 days, 17 & 21 June 17 from £969 8 days, 24 & 28 June 17 from £969 15 days, 17 & 21 June 17 from £1399 Departs London Heathrow & Manchester After superb feedback for the last 4 years we are delighted to revisit Mark Warners’ new Levante Beach Resort as our watersports destination for 2017 with departures from both Manchester and London Heathrow. This 5* resort is located on one of the longest sandy beaches on the eastern coast of Rhodes, in the resort of Afandou, 20kms from Rhodes Town. Rhodes is an island steeped in history, dotted with picturesque little villages, heavenly scented pine and cypress forests and miles upon miles of golden sandy beaches. Custom-designed for Mark Warner and only opened in 2012, the resort boasts state of the art tennis and watersports facilities. Making the most of the varied wind strengths on this part of the coast, the watersports centre offers sailors of all abilities a great range of craft to use. You can also try out the windsurfing, waterskiing, wakeboarding, knee-boarding, kayaking, ringo riding and stand up paddle boarding, under the expert guidance of our qualified instructors. For more high-octane thrills, the terrain of the island lends itself perfectly to some of the most exciting mountain biking around and a brand new fleet of specialised Hard Rock bikes is available to use free of charge. Within the resort, you’ll also find a purpose-built tennis centre boasting 6 Astroturf courts and a multi-sport show court, all of which are floodlit. LTA-qualified tennis professionals are on hand to put you through your paces. A five a side football pitch, 5 swimming pools and exercise classes mean you’ll never be at a loss for something to do.

WALKING CONNEMARA – IRELAND’S WEST COAST

5 days, 09 July 17 from £649 (without flights £499) Departs London Gatwick & Manchester There have been requests from many walkers for WalkWise to return to Ireland and we wanted to do something new and exciting so we have chosen one of the most loved and scenic regions in Ireland: Connemara on the beautiful wild-west Atlantic coast of Ireland.

WALKING IN THE TRANSYLVANIAN ALPS

8 days, 09 September 17 from £899 Departs London Stansted only Welcome to Brasov ‘the Jewel in Romania’; our home for the week. This, Romania’s second and perhaps finest city, rivals Prague or Cracow but on a friendlier scale and without the hordes of people. Fringed by the peaks of the Southern Carpathian Mountains it is resplendent with gothic, baroque and renaissance architecture. Our playground will be the mountainous regions around the city dominated by the Postavarul Massif and the Transylvanian Alps that offer some of the finest walking any discerning walker could hope for. We shall combine a wealth of must-do historical attractions no less than the spectacular Bran Castle and infuse it with a host of mythical and legendary figures such as Count Dracula himself….bleh, bleh, bleh…he did say that didn’t he? But then there is the very real and unique too, for Romania alone contains over half the population of Brown Bears in the whole of Europe, making this area both wild and tamed at the same time. Helpfully it also contains useful infrastructure such as ski lifts and narrow gauge railways that could afford us access to stunning and remote locations. Our walking may use these luxuries in order to access many contrasting walking areas such as bright white limestone ridges, clear mountains streams, open forests and jagged volcanic pinnacles plus the wild life such as brown bears, wolves, red deer, chamois and even lynx.

They say when you visit Connemara you “experience the real beauty of Ireland”. It is located in the north west corner of County Galway and is an iconic area of desolate beauty, incredible scenery and interesting attractions, which combine to make Connemara a place close to the hearts of Irish people and visitors alike. You’ll know you’re in Connemara when you enter an everchanging landscape and scenery and notice how the landscape becomes a mixture of vast beautiful bogland, rivers, lakes, woodlands, rich meadowlands, rugged hills, dramatic craggy mountains and then as you near the coast you’ll stumble across a stunning unpolluted coastline of sandy beaches and blue waters.

LA SANTA SPORTS HOLIDAY

8 days, Thursday 12 October 17 from £529 Departs London Gatwick, Manchester, Birmingham & Edinburgh La Santa is quite simply a brilliant sportsman’s holiday and this will be our 29th year. The complex is completely self-contained and situated on the quiet side of Lanzarote. The wonderful

Holidays thing about it apart from the hot sun is all the free sports you can learn - it’s endless. This is a self-catering break so no food is included and a feature of the holiday are the informal group nights out in local restaurants.

VIETNAM & CAMBODIA ADVENTURE

15 days, 04 November 17 from £2895 Departs London Heathrow only When we visited Thailand a couple of years ago a number of members came back expressing an interest in visit Vietnam and Cambodia in 2017. Well after some delay (we were hoping to have this advertised before Christmas!) we are very pleased to offer this trip to our members. We have been looking for a high quality company to arrange the land part of this trip and are using with the company who operated our extremely successful Thailand and River Kwai trip in 2015 as the feedback was excellent. We have also opted to use good quality 4* hotels throughout this trip so while we know that this is not the cheapest holiday in the market doing similar itineraries we feel it offers the right mix for our members of good value and great quality. We hope you are able to join us on what promises to be an amazing adventure.

SKI CANADA AT CHRISTMAS & NEW YEAR

11 days, 23 December 17 from £1879 Departs London Heathrow After a difficult few years in Europe recently with the snows coming very late we thought we’d try something a bit further afield and head to Canada! Banff is a lively town set in the spectacularly beautiful Banff National Park. Downtown Banff offers traditional Canadian hospitality with an excellent variety of bars, some with live music, and a wide choice of restaurants catering for all tastes and budgets. Your Tri-area lift pass covers the three ski areas of Lake Louise ski area (45 minutes’ drive), Mount Norquay (10 minutes’ drive) and Sunshine Village (25 minutes’ drive). A regular ski bus service, included with the pre-booked Tri-area lift pass, operates from our Banff hotels to all three ski areas. Although Mt Norquay is often referred to as Banff’s “local” hill, the resort should not be under-rated. Yes, it has easy trails but also some challenging ones too, such as Memorial Bowl, Temptation and Lone Pine. Sunshine Village has some of the highest skiing in Canada. It has three mountains: Mount Standish (with some of the easier trails) Lookout Mountain (high above the tree line with views across the Great Divide) and Goat’s Eye (with some of the best tree skiing on its lower slopes).

This brief description really doesn’t do any justice to the fantastic itinerary this trip has so make sure you visit the website for the full picture!

VENICE BEFORE CHRISTMAS

4 days, 15 December 17 from £569 Departs London Gatwick, Manchester & Luton Venice is a unique city constantly fighting against the rising tides of the Mediterranean and its status as an island state throughout recent history has left it independent and passionate. The ‘must see’ sights in Venice are St. Mark’s Square and the 11th century Basilica, the Doges Palace and the famous Bridge of Sighs but to really discover the essence of Venice you need to set off and get yourself lost! Nothing beats a stroll through the backstreets taking in the architecture and the Venetians. This is a chance to get away from the chaos of Chrsitmas preparation and enjoy a short break in this beautiful city. Your itinerary is quite well packed but also always some time for individual or group exploration!

NEW YEAR IN AN ITALIAN CASTLE

5 days, 29 December 17 from £645 Departs London Gatwick, Manchester, Birmingham & Edinburgh December is a great time of the month to visit the hills of Oltre Po, just south of Milano over the River Po. Though frequently called the Tuscany of the North, Oltrepò Pavese in Lombardy is fairly unknown. This area offers beautiful hills, medieval villages and castles, panoramic views, authentic Italian food and local wines. Oltrepò happens to be the largest wine producing area of Lombardy and one of the largest in Italy, especially of the Pinot Nero. The landscape is scattered with vineyards that are freely accessible for hikers or even mountain biking and the Christmas spirit will still be in the air. Many Spicers already know Torrezetta very well indeed; love it, returning all the time! It’s an Impressive castle, the communal areas, grounds and state-rooms are all very special and impressive. It is owned by the Roman Catholic Church and is very peaceful, scenic and so unique. Once home to Napoleon III the accommodation and bedrooms are all very different so don’t expect what your neighbour has but be assured of something a bit different - secret rooms with special views and you will have the option to stay in the East Wing or the Noble Wing! This is a real working Castle for the church and it’s not a hotel environment, not normally open to the public to sleep. There are no check in desks, some locks on some bedrooms doors and it’s managed by the nuns who clean our rooms every day and live on site. It is very different but everyone who stays has a wonderfully time – this combined with the fantastic itinerary and hospitality that WingsItaly bring and you are in for a real treat!
