WINTER 2017
To all Spice members your coordinators would like to extend a belated Merry Christmas and a very ‘Spicy’ Happy New Year to you all…welcome to the winter edition of your Spice newsletter.
Dianne Livingstone Spice London
By now you are either right in the thick of your festivities or just coming out the far side (depending on when this newsletter actually drops on your mat!) and you may be wondering how you are going to manage that last mince pie, the final piece of Christmas pudding, your last Turkey sandwich/curry/pie for a while and also how to rid yourself of all that over-indulgence and excess of the festive period…well that’s why you joined Spice isn’t it? After all the parties, Balls, weekends away, etc. it’s time to start planning your diary for 2017 but don’t worry your coordinators have all been busy arranging lots of things for you to look forwards to. Richard Coulter Spice West Midlands
Of course January through to March see us very heavily involved in the overseas ski trips – if you haven’t already booked anything, are looking for a second trip or maybe are thinking about trying skiing out for the first time then check the Spice UK website as there are still few trips with places to spare! But it isn’t all about skiing of course there are lots of events in your local programmes to start looking forward to so make sure you have a good look through the local event pages of the newsletter and if you want more information on any of the events just pop on line or call your local group. In this issue you’ll see a look about over some of the highlights of 2016…what will you do to make 2017 just as memorable? Plus as well as our usual gallery there is also a special 35th Anniversary Ball gallery because there were just too many to include! Announcement time now…Spice Bristol & Cardiff is changing its name! After much thought Kate, the new coordinator for the region, felt that the current name didn’t really reflect the regional area her group covers and so from the New Year we have Spice South West & South Wales (a bit of a mouth full but much more accurate!). Whatever your interests the Spice programme just gets bigger and better and I’m sure you’ll have lots of adventures to talk about over the next few months – and don’t forget to take your camera’s, phones, etc. with you. We love seeing all your pictures on Facebook often making us all quite jealous of the fun you’re having!
P.S A special mention Happy Birthday to both Scotland and West Midlands groups as they are 25 years old in 2017!

Name: Patricia Kilker Which Group are you a member of? Presently East Midlands and West Midlands but with changes afoot who knows which one by this time next year. How long have you been a Spice member? 5 years Why did you join Spice? To do fun and interesting things with like minded people with free time on their hands. What has been your favourite event? The Gower last August where I skinny dipped to assist a TV friend in completing her ‘before 40’ bucket list. Well, you’ve gotta haven’t you......One of the first Bristol/Cardiff bunk barn weekends ran under Kate Alderson. It was a fantastic weekend in itself in a fab bunk barn and in a lovely part of my beloved Wales. The extra activity was very liberating and very freeing; I think I was smiling non stop for about a week afterwards! Thanks Kate! What has been your most challenging event? In the early days, most of them as it can be nerve wracking turning up to things by yourself. However, you soon learn that everyone else has been in the same boat themselves and people will come and talk to you/make you feel welcome. This is I think one of the loveliest things about Spice; that we’ve all been newbies ourselves and so we look after and welcome newbies.
Name: Matt Ashman Which Group are you a member of? West Midlands. How long have you been a Spice member? Over 4 years Why did you join Spice? My friends were all getting married and having children, so I thought I’d better meet some new people! I’ve always been interested in going to new places and doing new things so Spice ticked all the boxes for me.
But the most challenging event itself? The Gower, again! But a walking weekend where some unexpected ‘scrambling’ was introduced to the days walk! That is scrambling over rocks/ cliff with the sea right below you! Much as I love the sea, I didn’t love this! I was petrified, my legs froze and I had to be rescued by the lovely Gideon. What is your funniest memory in Spice? Steve Dell on the bull in Jersey! Various other moments, generally in the bar after a party night! What would be your advice for a new member? Go along to as many different types of events as possible so that you get to know a wide number of people. Take a chance and try something new! Nothing ventured, nothing gained… Have you been on a Spice UK Holiday? Yes. I went to Croatia in September 16. The holiday was fab; brilliant hotel based on a tranquil island. Great food and drink. Great company. Have you had an embarrassing Spice moment? Too many to mention in polite company! (My stockings falling down at the 35th Ball was quite amusing!). What is your life philosophy in one sentence. Be kind – it costs nothing.
didn’t disappoint.Floating in The Blue Lagoon wearing a mud pack while drinking a beer on a Monday afternoon was real moment. What has been your most challenging event? Not sure it was challenging, but The Zip-wire was certainly something I never thought I’d do. What is your funniest memory in Spice? I remember getting ready for my first fancy dress party with Spice. I was in my hotel room and a little nervous about walking out. When I eventually left the room, the whole corridor was full of people in the most amazing outfits I’d ever seen. I thought, everything’s gonna be fine…. What would be your advice for a new member? It’s each to their own, but I found going to smaller events like meals and quizzes was a good way to meet people. Once you know a few people, the world is your oyster. Have you had an embarrassing Spice moment? Afraid not…..I don’t do embarrassment…
What has been your favourite event? It is a holiday to Iceland. I’ve always wanted to go and it
What is your life philosophy in one sentence. Everyday is a gift…so enjoy it.
Name: Ainslie Aitken
What is your funniest memory in Spice? Sunday morning breakfast chat at Ballachulish in 2015.
Which Group are you a member of? Scotland. How long have you been a Spice member? Almost 2 fun filled years Why did you join Spice? To try new experiences and travel more. Meeting new friends has been a bonus. What has been your favourite event? Hard choice but probably the quad biking, that was great fun. What has been your most challenging event? I think the firewalk but well worth it and I would recommend it to everyone. What has been your most challenging event? Not sure it was challenging, but The Zip-wire was certainly something I never thought I’d do.
What would be your advice for a new member? Try everything at least once and no one bites. Have you been on a Spice UK Holiday? Not yet, still trying to fit one in. Have you had an embarrassing Spice moment? Using nature’s loo on an Arrochar walk and a large group of students stopped just in front of us. My bright pink jacket wasn’t good camouflage. What is your life philosophy in one sentence. If you’re not smiling you are doing something wrong.
White Knight and
White Knight This is an idea that came from Spice founder Dave Smith who based it on a tradition he had witnessed while living on a kibbutz in Israel. On the Kibbutz, families often found themselves split up for long periods of time and there was a real need to find ways to overcome isolation and loneliness by demonstrating that they were part of a community of people who really cared for them.
The Spice version that we call “White Knight and Good Fairy Fortnight” works like this: Members book anonymously onto the event (for obvious reasons there is no “whose booked button for this event!). The Spice office then links everyone together in a circle where everyone is sent details of one other person (their “VIP”) who they will look after with some secret surprises over the fortnight. While you are looking after that “someone”, another “someone” has been sent your details and will be secretly looking after you!
“paying it forward” There is much talk these days about “paying it forward” and “random acts of kindness”. However, Spice members have been enjoying spreading the love of anonymous giving for over 35 years now through their regular White Knight and Good Fairy events.
The fortnight ends with a meal where everyone is revealed and everyone gets to meet their Good Fairy or White Knight. In the process we learn of all the stories of what has been going on. It’s often hilarious and always touching. The ingenuity and creativity of some people is unbelievable! Over the years we have heard of gnomes being caught by security lights while putting messages on lawns; cars being secretly washed or decorated; many a takeaway meal being left on a doorstep seconds before the weary
Good Fairy Fortnight
“VIP” returns tired and hungry; several instances of people being paged in supermarkets to come to customer services and find flowers or a gift waiting there! Acts of kindness can also be as simple as a lottery ticket or chocolate bar slipped through the letterbox. The Spice office give you as much information as possible about your “VIP” to help you and usually are able to pass on the details of a close friend or relative who can provide the necessary inside knowledge! In the busy society we live in today it can be hugely uplifting to know there is someone thinking of you and trying to make you feel special. It is equally great therapy to be the person creating such good deeds. Many years ago I gave a lift home to a lady after the White Knight Good Fairy Meal. She was a new member who I hardly knew, yet she had been absolutely overwhelmed by her experience of the fortnight. She was very emotional and kept mentioning how the fortnight had restored her faith in the goodness of people. When I dropped her off I realised why the fortnight had meant so much to her. Her home was actually a hostel for victims of domestic abuse. Now it was me who needed the tissues!
In society today we really need to encompass the true meaning of ‘pay it forward’ and it is a really part of the Spice ethos so anything that make us more giving to each other has to be a good thing. To book now, click here

Spice Preview Nights in Leeds, Sheffield and York… Our Preview Nights are a great way to make your start with SPICE and the easiest way of meeting a few new people and finding out how it all works. We also run a free raffle for all who attend (existing members too) with events as the prizes – just to add a touch of Spice to the evening. The plan is to welcome everyone, talk through the basics of Spice, and give you more info on the coming programme and an opportunity to book on events if you like. You can of course book in the usual ways (phone, web, or post - but remember the Spice motto – “You snooze, you lose – you rest, you rust!” Jonathan and enthusiastic volunteers will be on hand to answer any queries you may have and there may be an opportunity to watch the Spice DVD. Remember, everyone who attends is in the same boat so don’t be nervous about attending, come on your own (lots of people do) or come with a friend. Call us to book in advance or just turn up - either way, do come and see what you’ve been missing!!

Place: The Royal Oak, 18 Goodramgate, York (YO1 7LG)
The Old Queens Head is right alongside Sheffield Bus station and adjacent to Ponds Forge International Sports Centre on Pond Hill. The nearest tram stop is Fitzalan Square / Ponds Forge just a 5 minute walk away. The railway station is a 10 minute walk. There is some street parking on Pond Hill and more on Pond Street, or you can use the car park at Ponds Forge or the Castle Gate Q-Park next to the Travelodge. We meet in the area to the right as you enter through the main door from Pond Hill.
Parkside Tavern is the mock Tudor building on Merrion Street near its junction with New Briggate and alongside St John’s Gardens. The nearest outdoor parking is the Cross Belgrave St. car park. Indoor car parking is in the St John’s Centre car park on Merrion St., or the Citipark Car Park on Merrion Way is a little further away but cheaper. We meet in the upstairs room where the bar is usually open!
The Royal Oak is at the Monk Bar end of Goodramgate. There is no parking along Goodramgate so use one of the car parks just outside of the walled shopping centre. We meet in the upstairs function room which is through the inner door and then up the stairs on your right. Why not get a drink from the bar downstairs when you arrive and then join us upstairs?
For all locations we meet from 7:45pm. Please try to be there by 8pm for the talk.

Rambles - Grading System
Spice Rambles Rambles: Essential Information All Spice walks are designed to be fun, enjoyable, and above all, safe. All the walk leaders we use are experienced and carry first aid and emergency equipment but all walkers must ensure that they are properly equipped for the conditions. If you are a newcomer to Spice Rambles, please feel free to contact the walk leaders through the Spice Office. The leaders will be happy to discuss the appropriate type of clothing and equipment for use on Spice walks but here are a few general points to bear in mind. No jeans or trainers, please. Any Spice Ramble of Grade 3 or harder may involve walking over open country, not necessarily over welldefined paths, and it should not be assumed that you are going for a stroll in the park. You should wear warm clothing, preferably in the form of several layers, and all walkers must bring waterproof jackets and trousers. Happily, accidents and injuries are extremely rare but "injuries" are often caused by ill-fitting boots or inappropriate socks. A relatively minor injury out in the wilds can result in the walk being curtailed, so please ensure that you are happy with the fit of your boots and socks. Bring liquids and a packed lunch. Even if the write up suggests a convenient pub stop, please do not take this for granted. Pubs have been known to be full or even closed. A Spice ramble is not a race. The leader's responsibility is to ensure the safety of all the party, so he will often have to spend time at the back of the group. All walkers should ensure that they do not lose contact with the leader. If you can't see the leader, please stop and wait. (Neither Spice nor the walk leaders can be held responsible if a walker sustains an injury whilst out of touch with the leader.) Please be ready on time. There will be over 20 walkers taking part in a typical Spice ramble. The time specified in the newsletter is the Start time. If you are not ready to start walking promptly, you will be inconveniencing all those who had the foresight to get ready on time. Some rambles give a postcode near to the meet point; these are given for guidance only and members should not rely on Satnav systems to find the precise meet point for a walk. Always take the printed directions and a map with you. Please remember that Spice cannot be held responsible for the security of the car parking. Please ensure that you take sensible precautions to protect your car and belongings. Well behaved dogs are welcome on most walks unless otherwise stated, but must be pre-booked - please write it on your booking form or in the notes when booking online if you are bringing dogs. It is the owner's responsibility to ensure that the dog is kept under control on a fixed lead with a length of no more than two metres at all times, and is not allowed to cause a nuisance. You must bring a suitable lead and use it. Dogs must not be allowed off the lead at any time unless agreed with the walk leader after consultation with the other walkers.
Facebook We have a Facebook group for our walkers and walk leaders to share News, Photos, Gossip, Events and all things ‘walk’ related. Please follow the link below & join if you are one of our many, many walkers! www.facebook.com/groups/SpiceYorkshireWalkers

After meeting in Glossop we drive to the small layby at Doctor’s Gate, the course of an old Roman road, we follow this route to Old Woman the crossroads of the Pennine Way and our route, from here we enter open country off the beaten track, this is the quieter area of the moor where the hares are in their own element.During the cold winter months these hares change their coat to near pure white, easy to spot if there is no snow, not so easy after snow. We then pick up the Pennine Way for our return. This walk is mostly on open moor so good boots and warm clothing are essential. Good for photography as we should see several hares. Distance: 6 miles (but it’s a tougher walk across open rough moorland, exposed and a bit hilly so still a good 'harder' walk)

The walk rarely touches a road, giving the walker only the sounds of the countryside. It's an easy walk with great views. Grade: 4; Distance: 5 miles
Mid Week Ramble: Bollington Date: Place: Cost: Host:
Wednesday 1st March at 11am Nelson Pit Car Park , Poynton (SK12 1TE) £6.50 Member, £8 Guest Richard Langthorpe 07740 698432
A mostly flat walk which takes the Middlewood Way (a former railway line and now a haven for wildlife) towards Bollington and then return to the cars by the canal. Its horizontal nature doesn’t however mean
we have to compromise on scenery. Elevated sections of both the canal and the railway line afford beautiful views over the Cheshire Plain on one side and rolling pasture set against a backcloth of the hills of the Peak District on the other. We will stop for a picnic along the way so please bring a packed lunch. As ever, please bring your walking boots, and there’ll be the option of a drink in the pub after if desired. Grade: 4; Distance: 6½ miles

Descend steeply and cross the A6 via the footbridge, take the lane then footpaths to climb high above Matlock Bath via Shining Cliff to pass the Heights of Abraham, descend to Bonsall, the U F O capitol, circle round above the Via Gelia to descend into Cromford via the Harp Edge and the old mines. Distance: 10 miles
Ramble: Haslingden Date: Meet: Cost: Host:
Sunday 5th March at 11am Clough Head Car Park (Free), Haslingden £6.50 Member, £8 Guest Richard Langthorpe
A walk of two halves at the lower end of the grade. We explore both sides of the valley containing the three reservoirs of Haslingden Grane, and are thus afforded beautiful views of this valley from two aspects. Haslingden (‘Valley of the Hazels’) is a place steeped in industrial heritage, and produced the famous Haslingden Flags which went to pave London, including Trafalgar Square. This is a walk of quarry tracks, moorland, reservoirs and the darting flight of snipe if we are lucky. Please bring your walking boots and some sandwiches for a picnic lunch along the way. Note that there is a café at the car park so you can enjoy a relaxed drink of coffee at the start if you wish. Grade: 4; Distance: 6½ miles

We then follow the rive Wye for a bit and then walk through Great Shacklow Woods, coming out at Lees Bottom. We then follow the river Wye as it winds its way to the impressive Monsal Head viaduct. We climb up to the viaduct and then onto Monsal Head itself where we could have an ice cream. The route then passes through Little Longstone and through typical Peak District ‘dry stone’ wall farmland as we make our way back to Ashford. Distance: 6½ miles

Sunday 12th March at 10:30am Rivington, Bolton, Lancashire (BL6 7SB) £5 Member, £7 Guest Wade Murphy 07807 031485
This walk is so close to the M61 (approx 5 miles from junction 6) yet wild, desolate and picturesque. The early stages of the walk are within the grounds of Leverhulme Park once owned by Lord Leverhulme who made his wealth from bars of soap. It is thanks to his generosity that we can walk these trails and admire the buildings he created. This walk is uphill from the start and the ascent includes around 500 steps through the remains of the terraced ornamental gardens. Above the gardens is the route up to the pike (362 Metres) from which the views are spectacular. From the pike after a short descent we move on to crooked edge hill (389 meters). Known locally as ‘Two lads’ named after the twin cairns erected here after the deaths of two men found here in the last century. Grade: 3; Distance: 8 miles

Starting from the area known as Robin Hood we first ascend Birchen edge for the monument to Nelson and the rocks named after his 3 ships, descending from the trig point to cross the open moorland to gently climb White edge, this long edge has fine views across the Peak District and over Big moor, from the Hurkling stone we descend to the Grouse Inn, a former coaching inn on the Sheffield turnpike road. From there we join the end of Froggatt edge a famous climbing area where most of the best known climbers and mountaineers first started, this leads on to Curbar edge looking down on the Derwent valley, crossing the road takes us to Baslow edge with the Eagle stone, a rites of passage for local lads to climb, and to Wellington’s monument, a gentle descent then the last of the 6 edges, Gardom’s Edge with the 3 men rocks and Neolithic finds. Distance: 10 miles 20

Expect a few sharp ascents and descents on our way around as we make our way over towards Castle Hill & Harwood Fields before looping back towards Walmersley Golf Club and our start point via the picturesque village of Nangreaves. Date: Place: Cost: Host:
Sunday 9th April at 10:30am White Coppice Cricket Ground (PR6 9DE) £5 Member, £7 Guest Wade 07807 031485
Beyond the cricket ground nestling at the foot of the moors is Dean Black Brook an area of quarrying and lead ore extraction. This area is littered with reservoirs that were built at the turn of the 19th century to supply water to the nearby cotton towns and mills. After a steep climb we will pass Pikestones; the remains of a Neolithic Burial Cairn . Then on to Great hill, at 381 m (1,252 ft) is only slightly higher than the surrounding moorland, but provides excellent views in all directions particularly to the north and west, towards White Coppice via the ruins of Drinkwaters, south to Winter Hill , and east to Darwen Tower and the ruins of Hollinshead Hall The route from Great Hill along the top of the moor is a delight on large sandstone flags recycled from mills , which otherwise would be extremely wet. We then make our descent to the picturesque village of White Coppice. Grade: 3; Distance: 8 miles

Extras: £10 saving on Public Price for this workshop Weight Loss Easily??! That challenges a belief! Weight Loss is not easy is it? Diets are a drag! The starvation hurts! Time drags when you are hungry! Hungry and happy don’t always go together. It’s hard to keep the weight off! Well let me tell you! One of the areas Maureen is trained in is EFT, Emotional Freedom Technique which has proved to be amazing for many problems and challenges people face from fears to emotional distress. One Friday after too many biscuits (Friday is admin day and Maureen hates admin and usually turns to biscuits & cake). She was soon feeling full and disappointed & decided to use the EFT technique. Having spent about 5 minutes on it, yes, only 5 minutes she went back to work thinking no more about it. Well long story short, it brought about a subtle change, so subtle that she didn’t even notice until stepping on the scales at the gym and there was a stone missing! She lost a stone without any effort, didn’t starve herself or eat lettuce for a month! Those five minutes changed Maureen’s eating habits to more useful eating and she will tell you more about it on the day. Maureen has decided to share this technique and more understanding of why we do what we do in terms with over eating with people wanting to change their eating, lose weight and become who they want to be. The effects of losing weight and becoming the size you want to become can be a complicated business which is why we will also be exploring the areas that need to be considered so that the weight management works long term and you have the resources to get back on track if life causes a slipping back.

Hoar Cross Easy Ramble and optional Afternoon Tea
Grade: 3; Distance: 15-20 miles depending on the weather and how we feel on the day. Come and cycle up the shaking mountain (Mam Tor) with great views of the Edale valley and Kinder Scout. This is a fantastic ride in one of the most picturesque parts of the Peak District National Park taking in Castleton, Mam Tor, Edale and Jagger Clough on a combination of quiet roads and bridleways. The route has been designed to make the climbing as easy as possible but as we will be climbing 1800ft over the whole ride so the climbing will not be total painless. But we will be rewarded with some great riding and fabulous views over this beautiful part of the Peak District. This is a grade 3 ride so there will be one or two technical sections on the bridleways however they are fairly short and can be quite easily walked. We will endeavour to include a cafe stop on route but please make sure you have sufficient food and drink to keep your energy levels up for the ride. It is also important that you have suitable clothing for the conditions, as its winter we strongly recommend a waterproof jacket, several thin layers of clothing, full leg cover and stout footwear or cycling shoes. You must have full finger gloves with good grip and an approved cycling helmet. NO HELMET, NO RIDE. Don’t forget to put a change of clothes in the car just in case.

Charleston Dance Workshop in Sheffield Date: Sunday 22nd January from 2pm to 4:15pm Place: Walkley Community Centre, 7a Fir Street, Sheffield (S6 3TG) Cost: £13 Member, £15 Guest Host: Sheena Brabazon 07966 737215 The 1920s are back, and they’re bringing wobbly knees, penguin tilts and fits of giggling with them! Our bouncy dance teacher, Sheena, will be there, too, to guide you through the moves and encourage shimmying of epic proportions. Whether you’re a newcomer to shankle-shakes or have been swizzling as long as you can remember, Charleston is the kind of dance style where two left feet are a plus! Today's workshop is a full-of-giggles solo routine to "Hot Honey Rag" from the musical 'Chicago'. Come along and learn some moves that you can impress others with at special events (or waiting in line for the bus, we don't mind which!). It's a great way to add a little razzle to your Sunday, so put on your dance shoes and bounce your way along to Walkley Community Centre! Note: the Charleston involves a lot of swivelling, so smooth-soled shoes are best if you have them. Bring lots of water, too, and a deep well of silliness. This routine can be danced with a bowler hat or without. If you'd like to use a hat, please bring one with you. Bowler hats for this purpose can be bought at any fancy dress shop or online and will cost about £4 or so. YOU DON'T HAVE TO BRING A HAT if you'd prefer to dance without one or don't want to buy one. All the steps can be done with or without a hat.

Dates: Saturday 28th January Saturday 22nd April Place: Black Rocks, Matlock # Time: 10am Cost: £34 Member, £39 Guest Many members would love to do an abseil, but are too petrified to book the ones we normally offer. After seeing Mark Fenton's ability to gently coax even the most frightened, or physically disadvantaged people into achieving brilliant outdoor feats, I started these special sessions which have proved extremely popular! You just need to bring a little faith, and the will to succeed! The feeling you’ll get from your success is well worth it all. Mark will get you to overcome any fears by building up your confidence gradually. First we get used to the equipment and how to use it on a few very short descents, before tackling some bigger abseils if you feel able. You’ll not be forced to do anything you are uncomfortable with, or feel stupid if you back out of any stage. So go on…you’ve nothing to lose but your fears! Medical Note: If you have any medical conditions that could prevent you taking part in this adventure activity, please contact your doctor in advance to check. If you are unsure, please contact the instructor, Mark Fenton directly on 07798 790766 or your Spice office.

Anne Boleyn: Anne will be skilfully portrayed in character and costume by curator and eminent historian Lesley Smith. Lesley wants to put many facts straight in her accurate portrayal. For centuries, Anne has been portrayed as a manipulative cunning women responsible for causing the bloody aspects of the Reformation. In truth she was a highly educated profoundly religious person who cared deeply about her moral standing. Anne will appear in her execution gown during the last 45 minutes of her life in the Tower. By candlelight we will travel in time with her and stand guard as she leaves to join the “King of Kings”.

White Knights and Good Fairies in Yorkshire Date: Monday 13th - Monday 27th February Place: throughout Yorkshire Extras: finale meal on 27th February Good Fairies & White Knights still exist - at least in Spice and your very own Good Fairy or White Knight is out there somewhere. Your Good Fairy or White Knight will put a little magic into day to day living, turning you into a VIP for a fortnight. There is an added twist to the fun ... you will have no idea who is sending your gifts and surprises. Our finale meal is great fun as this is when all is revealed, and you discover who's been making your life pleasant and exciting for the last 14 days. We all love to give as well as receive, and while you're getting all this attention you'll have the chance to be a Good Fairy or White Knight too! This is your opportunity to "make someone's day" - or evening, or morning by leaving an unexpected little message, or a simple gift, turning them into a VIP with your surprises and good deeds. It’s a fantastic fortnight of fun, with everyone creating some 'magic' with a bit of imagination and a sense of commitment. The event works very simply - when you book this event you'll become a Good Fairy or White Knight to one other person. This person is your VIP for the fortnight and it's up to you to come up with some nice surprises for him or her. You in turn will have nice things done for you by your Good Fairy or White Knight, who is a completely different person taking part in the event i.e....'A' is Good Fairy to 'B'....who is Good Fairy to 'C'...who is Good Fairy to 'D'...etc. Everyone is both a VIP and a Good Fairy/White Knight, giving and receiving surprises. It's important to remember that your good deeds and special surprises needn't cost a lot if anything, in fact you should keep expenditure to a pound or two... it's not the amount of money you spend but the thought that goes into it. E.g., an old roll of wallpaper makes a great banner to felt tip a message on! One word of warning, you should not do anything to embarrass or offend or that is illegal! It should be nice surprises! It needn't take lots of time, but you should be prepared to think of at least 4 surprises, and to have one ready for the start of the fortnight so your VIP gets a surprise straight away. What surprises you come up with are up to you - treats, favours, entertainment - anything which will bring a bit of fun and frivolity into your VIP's life - make them feel someone is thinking of them and wishing them well. (Meanwhile your Good Fairy or White Knight will be doing the same for you!) It could be decorating their car, having a cake delivered, leaving a nice message on the answering machine, writing a poem, finding out what Spice events they are booked on and surprising them.....? You'll need to let us know a bit about yourself to help your Good Fairy or White Knight give you surprises that you'll like, your VIP will also send us information to help you give them lots of fun and surprises that they'll appreciate. When you register for this event you must send in a note giving us the following details which will be passed on to your Knight/ Fairy:
28
Your name and address and any telephone numbers where it’s ok to call you
A photo, so your Good Fairy / White Knight can identify you!
If you own a car the make, colour and registration.
Your approximate age Favourite Music, Food, Colour, Drink/any likes & dislikes Names of any friends/friends who would be willing to help your Knight/ Fairy. Any other likes, dislikes or relevant information.
When we have everyone's details all the participants will be sorted into areas, there will be a lucky dip and you'll be given the name and details of the person who'll be your VIP. And of course, although it is better to give than receive; your details will be passed onto your Good Fairy who will think up nice surprises for you! With everything you send or do you should send a message which indicates that it is from their "Good Fairy", while also doing everything possible to preserve your anonymity. You may also get helpers to deliver treats to your VIP to preserve your cover. As the game goes on, everyone gets to hear of the hilarious situations that occur, the surprises that get sprung and the fun the game creates. Maybe you can use other Spice events to surprise your VIP - the office will help where possible. The game ends on Monday 27th February at 7.30pm where we have a meal - venue TBA. At an appointed hour, after the meal, we will gradually reveal everyone’s identities and swap stories of what has been going on over the action packed fortnight. Is your imagination running riot? Can you bear to wait until we start? Are you already thinking up all sorts of schemes and surprises? What a brilliant idea this is! Please see the website for more details (and rules!)

In their own words, explore the best of British theatre in a cinema near you. Royal Ballet Live: Petipa's The Sleeping Beauty Cast: Marianela Núñez, Vadim Muntagirov A perennial delight and a much-loved classic, The Royal Ballet's The Sleeping Beauty combines the best of classical ballet, with all its charms and virtuosity, splendid music and talented dancers. First choreographed to Tchaikovsky's great musical score by Marius Petipa in Russia in 1890, The Sleeping Beauty has wonderful ensembles, solos including the Rose Adage as Princess Aurora meets her suitors, and of course the concluding celebratory dances for the happy union of prince and princess. The Royal Ballet's landmark staging was revived for the Company's 75th anniversary celebrations in 2006. The designs by Oliver Messell, one of the greatest stage designers of the 20th century, were restored and updated for this production by Peter Farmer. The rich evocations of the baroque opulence of a royal court, the panoramic journey of the prince to the overgrown castle and the colourful characters in this famous fairytale make this Sleeping Beauty a spectacle like no other. Approximate running time 3 hours, including 2 intervals. Cast and running time subject to change

...a great return to this lovely area
Includes: 2 nights’ bunk accommodation, 1 full cooked breakfast, 1 continental breakfast with hot items, Friday evening Fish Supper, Saturday night evening meal, 2 guided walks Extras: Drinks, packed lunches etc. Our popular bunk weekends are incredibly sociable, great value and get great feedback. This weekend we are in the Forest of Bowland area which we don't often get to explore and we have taken exclusive use of Slaidburn YHA. This one doesn't have large bunk rooms either so we have a pretty good chance of getting a good night’s sleep! Accommodation: This historic YHA building was formerly a 17th century village inn, with traditional beamed ceilings; it offers cosy, comfortable accommodation in the centre of Slaidburn village in the heart of the Forest of Bowland, a designated Area of Natural Beauty once described as the 'Switzerland of England'. There are two dining rooms which each seat 16, a self-catering kitchen and a small comfortable lounge area with an open fire. There are 32 beds over 8 rooms: 1x2, 1x3, 4x4, 1x5 and 1x6 bed rooms and all bed linen is provided. Slaidburn is an attractive village in the middle of the Forest of Bowland with a deserved reputation for attracting tourists who come principally to walk the area. There is a fine village green beside the River Hodder which is home to a family of friendly ducks and lovely views over the surrounding fells. The village also boasts the wonderful old church of St Andrews and a pub of great character, the Hark to Bounty, named after the squire’s favourite hound. There are many other fine old buildings in Slaidburn; Waterloo House, the old Methodist church, Glebe House and the Slaidburn Heritage Centre are all well preserved due to the slightly unusual history of the village. Since the late 19th century the village has been ‘owned’ by the King Williamson family who have preserved much of the character of the village whilst avoiding the modern developments that tend to crop up on such picturesque village outskirts. Slaidburn is recognised as the capital of the Forest of Bowland with Dunsop Bridge its trusted lieutenant (as well as being the geographical centre point of Britain). However the hills of Longridge and Pendle are fine viewpoints to the west and south whilst Hurst Green is a pretty village where JRR Tolkien took inspiration for the Lord of the Rings. General: We can't guarantee which room you will have but we will make an effort of keeping local Spice members together and room dorm share requests where possible. Bring some ear plugs if you’re a light sleeper. We will be mucking in and cooking/organising breakfast on the Saturday and Sunday morning. On Friday evening we have booked the group in to the pub over the road for their Fish Supper (vegetarians can be catered for) and we will send out for menu choices nearer the time. Nibbles will be provided to keep you going throughout the weekend though please do feel free to bring some with you. These weekends are very much about throwing yourself in to the Spice Spirit and helping out where needed especially cleaning up after meals and before we depart on the Sunday morning. Walking: there are plenty of options and our walk leader will pick a longer walk for the Saturday and a shorter one for the Sunday to get the most of the area.

Date: Friday 17th - Sunday 19th March Place: Kettlewell, Skipton, North Yorkshire # (BD23 5QU) Cost: £69 Member, £84 Guest (Deposit £10) Host: Lauren on 07852 366055; Walk leader: Rod Finlayson Includes: 2 nights’ accommodation, 1 cooked breakfast, 1 continental breakfast, an evening meal on the Saturday & 2 guided walks This weekend we have booked out the Kettlewell YHA Hostel for ourselves and we will be running an exciting walking weekend in this stunning part of the Yorkshire Dales between the mountains of Great Whernside and Buckden Pike. Local walks around Kettlewell are some of the best you'll find in the region and the stunning Dales Way walking route passes right outside the hostel. The upper Wharfdale Village of Kettlewell is surrounded by limestone pavements and lush green dales. Located North of Skipton this old stone house hostel (which also doubles up as the village post office) has good access to the Embsay Steam Railway and Bolton Abbey. A walk through Arncliffe, stopping at The Falcon (The Falcon is the original Woolpack pub in the TV show Emmerdale Farm) is on our tick list this weekend and which is incorporated into one of the walks. For those looking for a challenge, Buckden Pike is an obvious challenge (one of the highest peaks in Wharfedale) and if our walk leader is happy, it may be possible to split into a two separate easy and advanced groups as some may wish to tackle this peak. Since Spicers tend to arrive at random times on the Friday, there is not set format and we will be heading out to eat at a local pub around 7ish so if you are going to be arriving particularly late do ensure you have either eaten on the way or bring some food to cook in the hostel’s kitchen. The weekend includes a fully catered English buffet style cooked breakfast on both days. On Saturday evening after a day's walking or climbing, we will have also enjoy a cooked dinner for in the restaurant (all included in the price) and as is now customary on these weekends we will organise a quiz or some similar entertainment after dinner. Vacation time is Sunday morning after 10:30am however we then embark on our second walk of the weekend and we should be able to store our belongings securely in the hostel until our return later in the day. 38

Includes: includes Friday evening light supper, two nights’ B&B, lunches and 4 course evening meal Extras: Assessments if you decide to take them at a cost of £5 If you're interested in hill walking, but want to learn more about the practical skills and techniques needed to venture safely out to the hills and mountains of Britain, or if you already have some of these skills but want to increase your level of competence, then this weekend is for you. Anyone who has been out walking on the hills will appreciate the problems that may arise if you are not prepared and this weekend is designed to make sure you're aware of what can happen and what to do about it. The majority of the weekend is practical so you will be out walking in the breath-taking scenery of the Welsh Hills. The countryside in which we’ll be walking, as well as being of outstanding beauty, is ideally suited to developing navigation skills as it is not always easy to follow the paths and rights of way. The emphasis for the weekend is on enjoying the walks and the instruction will be given on the hoof with each person having the opportunity to develop their own level of confidence. Both days’ walks are quite extensive but the pace is leisurely so you don't need to be super fit to take part.

Includes: 2 nights’ B&B, Friday buffet supper, 2 buffet lunches, 4 course evening meal and all instruction If they told you at school that you couldn’t draw then this weekend break will prove them wrong. You don’t have to be a budding Monet or Picasso to enjoy this weekend, which takes the complete beginner or dabbler through the basics of drawing and painting. Julie Hyde, an accomplished artist, and experienced tutor, has put together a relaxed, fun programme to draw out all your latent artistic talents. Julie will dispel the mystique of drawing and painting into simple steps which anyone can follow. Demonstrating various techniques using pencil, watercolour and other media, she will show you how easily you can create sketches and finished works that you’ll be delighted to display. On Saturday we'll begin by getting a feel for sketching and how to 'see' things to paint. Then you’ll discover the many ways to use watercolour, and by Sunday you'll be using your newly acquired skills and techniques to put the final touches to your finished piece of work. Previous members that have been on this weekend have been amazed by what they were capable of creating! You are welcome to bring your own equipment and materials but, if you are a complete newcomer to art then all basic equipment will be provided with a small charge at the end of the weekend for consumables such as paints and paper, dependant on the amount used.

Memorable events in 2016...
As we draw close to another year we look over some of the events we have had this year. 2016 has been quite a year on all fronts and this is a chance for us to look back...
MAY MAR Kate Alderson took over South West & South Wales May 2016
Butlins 70’s night Great event everyone made a huge effort in dressing up the costumes where outstanding. Look out for 80’s event next year.
JUL MAY Copenhagen Trip – One of the highlights of the year and a long weekend still talked about fondly on events today. We toured, we drank, we dined and we enjoyed a truly stunning city.
OCT Fire walk Whilst the group was small the feedback was stunning; one of the members enjoyed it so much she did the walk seven times in one memorable evening. We’ll be repeating this event in 2017 – keep an eye out for dates.
Glider flying in Usk, South Wales – so peaceful, so scary!
JUL
Kat Buttle took over Thames Valley & Solent July 2016
JUL Wakeboarding Cliff Lakes in Tamworth
Thanks to Mik Barton for this lovely picture of Helen mastering the trendy sport of wakeboarding on their newly installed cable circuit. We had a few members enjoying this unusual event and incredibly they all managed to stay upright!
Ballachulish Break – The legendary weekend that keeps getting better – we’ve done this break for over six years and 2016 proved to be another brilliant weekend. Highlights include a quiet Friday night at the pub and stunning walking in and around Glencoe. We’ll be back in 2017 doing it all again.
Hot Air Balloons the beauty of watching the balloons rising at the Bristol Balloon Fiesta it was hit and miss as the weekend started with no wind - but it all came good in the end. Love this event it is a Spice favourite.
Scotland’s Coast to Coast via the Forth and Clyde Canal – this is a particular highlight as it took 6 individual walks covering 101km – west to east. We started close to the Erskine Bridge and finished in central Edinburgh passing the Falkirk Wheel, Glasgow suburbs, Edinburgh suburbs and many towns and villages along the route. The only constant throughout was canal. I think five members managed every section but we received fantastic support on the individual walks along the way.
AUG
Edinburgh Festival is a must do event for all Spicers one for the bucket list and growing year on year. The festival consists of many components that are separate events that make up the event and together they form the largest annual cultural festival in the world.
SEP
The Dana Prison Sleepover Experience.
This is one off ‘Night in A Cell’ in this decommissioned prison was a far cry away from the usual hotel or hostel stays that are usually on offer with Spice. There were no luxury items and members spent the night in a cell on metal bunk bed frames.
FUN RUN– Every year Spice West Midlands put a team together for the Great Midlands Fun Run made up of runners, walkers, joggers and volunteer race marshals.
1 October 35th Anniversary Ball
This was an extremely unique experience. Our tag line was “do the time without the crime”
NOV
Dining in the dark... Spice are not strangers to adventurous forms of dining out. We’ve dined in a cold war nuclear bunker. We’ve dined on TV. We’ve even dined out at a table suspended at 200 feet from a crane! But now we have dined in the dark for charity!

Highlighted capital on the Baltic Sea, Tallinn is the country’s cultural hub. It retains its walled, cobblestoned Old Town, home to cafes and shops, as well as Kiek in de Kök, a 15th-century defensive tower. It has charm by the sack full, fusing the modern and medieval to come up with a vibrant vibe all of its own.
SKI VAL D’ISERE
8 days, Sunday 05 February 17 from £849 Departs London Gatwick, Manchester & Birmingham It’s easy to see why Val d’Isere remains one of the best loved French skiing destinations. It’s kept the charm and the feel of its rural village roots while growing into a modern resort with a lovely atmosphere. Flaunt some fashion if you must, indulge in the crazy nightlife if you care to, but more importantly come for the skiing as there’s superb terrain and enough variety to suit everyone. The nursery slopes are in the middle of the resort and beginners can discover easy runs in breath-taking scenery above the tree line. Stronger skiers have the vast Espace Killy to explore, from the challenge of the Solaise bumps to the wide open pistes of the glacier at Fornet. Off-piste enthusiasts are spoiled for choice and it’s the perfect place to combine off-piste guiding and instruction.
SKI MERIBEL
8 days, Sunday 19 March 17 from £869 Departs London Gatwick, Manchester & Birmingham Spread your wings and explore the three Valleys. The chalet hotel Tarentaise is an ideal base for skiers who enjoy plenty of variety. Intermediates especially will thrive on the 600kms of well-kept pistes; you can ski all week and still leave plenty of runs untouched. In the two villages and higher up, beginners can cut their teeth on a wealth of uncrowded nursery slopes. Experts can tackle the infamous Courchevel couloirs and the Chanrossa bumps. If the weather closes in, forest runs down the valley are the answer, while in sunny conditions Val Thorens, Europe’s highest resort, is the place to head for. Meribel is one of the more lively alpine resorts for après ski and Mottaret a little more reserved, but it has a good choice of bars and restaurants.
ESTONIAN ESCAPE
4 days, Friday 24 March 17 from £569 Departs London Gatwick only Let Spice take you on a wonderful weekend trip to the beautiful city of Tallinn. If the words ‘former Soviet’ conjure up images of dull and grey then Tallinn does all it can to break away from this misconception and will delight in proving you wrong! Estonia’s
OSLO MINI BREAK
4 days, Thursday 25 May 17 from £539 Departs London Gatwick, Manchester & Edinburgh Join Spice on a wonderful weekend trip to the city of Oslo, Norway’s capital and largest city, with its vibrant social scene and special combination of nature experiences and city life. Oslo is one of Europe’s fastest-growing cities, and is quickly transforming into a cosmopolitan hub with an abundance of world-class museums, restaurants, and art, while still maintaining the relaxed atmosphere of a much smaller town. It’s known for its green spaces and museums. Many of these are on the Bygdøy Peninsula, including the waterside Norwegian Maritime Museum and the Viking Ship Museum, with Viking ships from the 9th century and the Holmenkollbakken is a skijumping hill with panoramic views of the fjord.
CYPRUS SPRING CHILLOUT
8 days, Saturday 30 April 17 from £719 Departs London Gatwick, Luton, Birmingham & Manchester Cyprus, in the eastern Mediterranean, has a rich, turbulent history stretching back to antiquity. Known for its beaches, it has a rugged interior with wine-growing regions. It’s separated into a Greek south and Turkish north, with the capital Nicosia also divided. Coastal Paphos is famed for its archaeological sites relating to the cult of Aphrodite as it is believed to be where the goddess first came to earth and is ‘where the gods go on holiday’. The dividing line between Europe and the Orient, Cyprus has so much to offer and that’s not even mentioning the great weather!
All Spice UK air holidays are protected by the Civil Aviation Authority under the ATOL scheme in the event of failure of the tour operator. Each tour operators ATOL number is stated at the end of every holiday write up on our website www.spiceuk.com plus full terms and conditions. Your money is protected via our Trust Account in compliance with EC Package Travel Regulations.
Holidays The story of Cyprus’ tumultuous past is told through its historic sites, Roman ruins, multifaceted museums and dusty urban streets. This sense of living history is highlighted most vividly in Paphos, with extraordinary archaeological sites like the Tombs of the Kings, which sprawls like an ancient theme park.
LA SANTA SPORTS HOLIDAY
8 days, Thursday 12 October 17 from £529 Departs London Gatwick, Manchester, Birmingham & Edinburgh La Santa is quite simply a brilliant sportsman’s holiday and this will be our 29th year. The complex is completely self-contained and situated on the quiet side of Lanzarote. The wonderful thing about it apart from the hot sun is all the free sports you can learn - it’s endless. This is a self-catering break so no food is included and a feature of the holiday are the informal group nights out in local restaurants.
TURKISH BLUE COAST CRUISE
8 days, Saturday 24 June 17 from £799 Departs London Gatwick, Manchester, Birmingham & Edinburgh Take a different look at Turkey from the decks of a traditional gulet as we cruise around the turquoise coast of the Aegean. Do nothing more than relax and recharge your batteries, or find some adventure with optional watersports and hiking. So many people tell us how wonderful this holiday is and many go back time and again. Choose how you want to relax, you can always find a quiet spot to read or just watch the world go by. There’s plenty of time for swimming and snorkelling in the warm turquoise sea; in some bays you can arrange to go water skiing, parasailing, ride a banana or even the Red Mable! We are always being told from members how much they loved the food and that it was so much better than they imagined. All meals are prepared fresh every day by the on-board chef who works non-stop. Using locally grown produce means that tomatoes taste as they should because they’ve been ripened naturally in the sun; salads become an enjoyable part of the meal instead of just a bit of lettuce on the side of your plate. There’s loads of variety at every meal which makes life easy if you are vegetarian or have a special dietary requirement (but remember to tell us beforehand).
LAPLAND ADVENTURE & THE NORTHERN LIGHTS
8 days, Saturday 03 December 17 from £970 Departs London Gatwick, Manchester, & Bristol Finland in winter is a magical experience. A scenic winter wonderland located deep inside the Arctic Circle. Blanketed in snow from December to April, reindeer far outnumber people here, and snow-laden trees form bizarre sculptures in a vast and silent landscape. At night the mesmerising Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) can shimmer in the moonlight (not guaranteed – unfortunately not even Spice can do that!). By day there are exhilarating reindeer, husky and snowmobile safaris. For some visitors the months of December and January are the most evocative, when the blue twilight of ‘Kaamos’ envelops the arctic landscape and days pass in a palette of rose-coloured dawns and dusks. Days in the Arctic Circle are shortest from early December to mid-January.
