AUTUMN 2017
Hi all and welcome to the Autumn edition of the Spice newsletter Firstly, I would just like to say, WHERE HAS THE YEAR GONE! With so much happening in the background for Spice it is a wonder how we get such a wide variety of events and holidays together and deliver them to you. I take my hat off to your Coordinators and their dedicated teams including all of you volunteer coordinators!
Rebecca Gregory Spice London
This leads me into saying ‘farewell’ to a much-loved and respected member of the Spice team - Dianne Livingstone is retiring after 20 years at the helm of Spice London - you will be sorely missed and we all wish you the best in your next adventure! However, I am delighted to introduce Rebecca Gregory who is taking over the reins as coordinator of Spice London. Becks is already experienced in putting on an events programme so we are sure that Spice London is in good hands and together with Karen who has been a long-standing rock of the London team we are looking forward to seeing lots of new ideas and events. Our premier Spice holiday to America and the Grand Canyon for an 8 day rafting trip has just returned led by your South West & South Wales co-ordinator Kate who, in her own words said ‘had a great trip to Vegas with a week of sleeping under the stars in the Grand Canyon. I feel very lucky to have been able to do the Canyon twice. An amazing place which is so beautiful. And the rapids are so much fun!’ The 2018 trip is already available to book now and is filling fast so don’t hang around for too long.
Kathryn Buttle Spice Thames Valley & Solent
Richard Coulter Spice West Midlands
Lauren Fawkes Spice Manchester
In this edition we have details of the new look Spice National Weekend which many of you may already have seen and booked - we showcased this on Facebook recently and there was a real buzz around it. We also take a look at some of the more aspirational holiday destinations we are currently working on as well as the usual member profiles and holiday departures. As always keep a look out for new events and the old favourites as well as pages from your local groups that let you know what is happening in your area.
Ian Purvis Spice UK
Jonathan Banks Spice Yorkshire
Steve Dell Spice East Midlands
Kate Alderson Spice South West & South Wales
Name: Anna Marlow Which Group are you a member of? Spice West Midlands How long have you been a Spice member? Never entirely sure - always say 10-15 yrs ... might actually be longer. Why did you join Spice? To try different things that I probably wouldn’t have thought of or be able to do by myself. Have done many things from crafts to holidays. Because of spice I can now bake my own bread, tried many crafts, played Roller Derby for 2 years - a sport I had not heard of before, can now sail (badly), Dragon boated a number of times - again had not heard of before, I have a Christmas bauble that I made that I use every Christmas, I have also made 2 metal door stops and a poker from Blacksmithing.
Name: Ian Reid Which Group are you a member of? Manchester How long have you been a Spice member? I have been a member since Nov 2016. Why did you join Spice? I joined spice because I lost my wife three and half years ago and had no friends. I joined Spice to make new friends and start to go out again. What has been your favourite event? My favourite was flying a plane from Coventry to Stafford. I have also enjoyed playing badminton.
Name: Kim Pickett Which Group are you a member of? West Midlands How long have you been a Spice member? Since January 2016 Why did you join Spice? Spice was recommended to me by a counsellor in December 2014 to add a new dimension to my life following the sad end of my long marriage. It took me a year to pluck up the courage to request a brochure and find out what it was all about! I really regret now I did not join sooner because I would have got in so many more good times. What has been your favourite event? I love the walks and party events but the holiday to Calpe was just fabulous. What has been your most challenging event? Sounds silly but the most challenging thing was turning up at my first event in January 2016, which was the Barn Dance at Wishaw and not
What has been your favourite event? Have done so many would be hard to pick one event. What is your funniest memory in Spice? Maybe not funny but whilst driving a HGV I looked in my mirror to see I was been overtaken by a Tank - slightly surreal. What would be your advice for a new member? Try it - if you don’t like it don’t do it again - often it’s the events that I’m not sure I will like that I actually enjoy more. Have you been on a Spice UK Holiday? Have been to Greece twice for the Mark Warner trip, Snowboarding, Surfing and have just come back from the canal walk from Birmingham to Warwick weekend. My first event was actually a weekend away at the cottage with Barry and Sonia. What is your life philosophy in one sentence. “If you don’t try you will never know”
What has been your most challenging event? I have completed a couple of rambles and found these challenging because I am not exactly fit. I have done a few steep climbs but worth it at the end for the view. What is your funniest memory in Spice? I have had a few falls while playing badminton that other members found very funny. What would be your advice for a new member? My advice to a new member is just jump in at the deep end and get involved straight away. Book as many events as you can. Have you been on a Spice UK Holiday? I have not been on a holiday yet but I have booked several trips for later in the year. Including Lapland! I have always wanted to see the Northern Lights so I am going to get the chance. What is your life philosophy in one sentence. My life philosophy is, just to get out and escape monotony.
knowing a soul. Now I realise how daft it was to be so apprehensive. I think now I need to do something really challenging and out of my comfort zone but not sure what that is yet.... What is your funniest memory in Spice? I think you had to be there for this one but the games of “Who’s in the bag” led by Beverley Wood, Calpe co-ordinator, I think alcohol played a big part in it too. What would be your advice for a new member? Don’t delay, join today! I felt very welcomed by others and put at ease when I joined as a new member. Have you been on a Spice UK Holiday? Calpe, Spain September 2016, best laugh I have ever had on a holiday, great people and fun times. Booked on Sicily the Italian Way September 2017 and keeping a look out for the next one after that. Have you had an embarrassing Spice moment? I’m sure my worst one is yet to come as I’m pretty clumsy...I do have a habit of falling over and down holes on walks probably because I’m too busy talking! What is your life philosophy in one sentence? When one door closes, another one opens”

Ski Anticipation... We are now in October and only a couple of months away from the first of our skiing departures for the 2017/18 season and what a trip that promises to be spending Christmas and New Year in the Canadian white stuff! I have even seen some talk of snow fall making an appearance in some European resorts already. Last season almost 400 Spicers took to the slopes with us on 14 ski trips – were you one of those? I may be preaching to the converted here but skiing is such a social experience that it is an ideal activity and holiday for Spice. You may be on your own as you whizz down the latest piste but when you reach the bottom or decide to take a break it’s great to have the company of other Spicer’s all around and when it comes to the Après Ski well what happens on a Spice ski trip stays on a Spice ski trip! When planning our ski programme we try to offer variety, interest and a little something for everyone. The coming season has already booked very well with a number of trips full and many more with just a few places remaining. The feedback last year was amazing with lots of fun had by all; we have a very active Spice Facebook group for Skiers (Search on “Spice Ski UK Group”) which is a fun way to break the ice and keep in touch with your ski pals. And if you are thinking of joining us this year you can always see whose going where first. Whether you are an old hand or want to try it for the first time everyone is more than welcome on our ski trips and if your preferred flight isn’t showing available you can always ask and we may be able to secure just what you are looking for. Take a look at the Spice UK website for more details and full availability on all our upcoming ski trips. So, see you on the slopes ...

Spice Moments
Coordinator’s Corner What a great Spice summer we have had with fantastic weekends in Helmsley, Masham, Scarborough and Grassington. We’ve had lots of fun outdoor events from tennis to croquet and outdoor theatre to narrowboating, along with cycling, walking and many other adventures. It was great fun to end the season with our End of Summer 70s Party and I’m happy to say that thanks to your generosity we raised £565 for St. Gemma’s Hospice. We were sorry to hear that our walk leader Roy broke his ankle in August. This means there aren’t quite as many rambles as usual in the current programme. We wish Roy a speedy recovery and hope to see him back out in the hills very soon. There are lots of Spice Yorkshire members in the photos in this newsletter on both the front and back covers and also the Spice Moments page to the left. Why not have a look and see who you can recognise? Perhaps you are there! Please keep sending in your photos – we love to see them and share them on social media and our weekly email bulletin, and who knows, you may just be our next cover star! As we head into the autumn and towards Christmas we’ve got loads of great events to come. The party season’s only just getting started – we’ve got The Halloween Dinner Party at The Garrison Sheffield on 27 October, The Spice Yorkshire Christmas Party in Leeds on 16 December, the Spice New Year’s Eve Party at Jury’s Inn Sheffield and we also have information on our Spice Winter Ball in Leeds on 10 February in this newsletter. Many of our weekend breaks this quarter are already fully booked but we recently added our City of Culture Social Weekend in Hull on 20-22 October. We still have rooms available if you want to join us to visit Hull in its special year. We’re currently working on the breaks for 2018 but some dates for your diary are listed on page 40. Or why not Spice things up and have a go at something unusual like Curling or the Manhunt Detective Game. Whatever you choose I hope to see you out and about on an event very soon!
Jonathan Welcome to new members You’ve taken the first steps and joined Spice; the next step is to come along to your first event. We know this can be a daunting prospect when you don’t know anyone else in the group but there’s no need to be apprehensive, Spice are a friendly bunch. Most of us come along on our own to events so we’re all well used to meeting and welcoming new people. A great way of getting into Spice is by booking your first events right away and getting your first event “under your belt”. Even better is to try a weekend away and get to know a smaller group of people really well. If you’ve not been to a Spice Preview Night we hold them every month (see page 13 for dates) so do make an effort to come to one of these, and please next time we are on an event, come up and say hello so we can put a face to the name! If you have any queries at all, please give us a call in the office and we will always do our utmost to help you.
Contact us The Spice office is open from 10am until 6pm Monday to Friday except on public holidays. Spice Preview Nights in Leeds, Sheffield and York… Our Preview Nights are a great way to make your start with SPICE and the easiest way of meeting a few new people and finding out how it all works. We also run a free raffle for all who attend (existing members too) with events as the prizes – just to add a touch of Spice to the evening. The plan is to welcome everyone, talk through the basics of Spice, and give you more info on the coming programme and an opportunity to book on events if you like. You can of course book in the usual ways (phone, web, or post) - but remember the Spice motto – “You snooze, you lose – you rest, you rust!” Jonathan and enthusiastic volunteers will be on hand to answer any queries you may have and there may be an opportunity to watch the Spice DVD. Remember, everyone who attends is in the same boat so don’t be nervous about attending, come on your own (lots of people do) or come with a friend. Call us to book in advance or just turn up - either way, do come and see what you’ve been missing!!

Dates: Tuesday 10thOctober Tuesday 9th January
Dates: Tuesday 24th October Tuesday 30th January
Dates: Monday 13th November Monday 22nd January
Place: The Old Queens Head, 40 Pond Hill, Sheffield (S1 2BG)
Place: The Royal Oak, 18 Goodramgate, York (YO1 7LG)
Place: Parkside Tavern, Merrion Street, Leeds (LS2 8JE)
The Old Queens Head is right alongside Sheffield Bus station and adjacent to Ponds Forge International Sports Centre on Pond Hill. The nearest tram stop is Fitzalan Square / Ponds Forge just a 5 minute walk away. The railway station is a 10 minute walk. There is some street parking on Pond Hill and more on Pond Street, or you can use the car park at Ponds Forge or the Castle Gate Q-Park next to the Travelodge. We meet in the area to the right as you enter through the main door from Pond Hill.
The Royal Oak is at the Monk Bar end of Goodramgate. There is no parking along Goodramgate so use one of the car parks just outside of the walled shopping centre. We meet in the upstairs function room which is through the inner door and then up the stairs on your right. Why not get a drink from the bar downstairs when you arrive and then join us upstairs?
Parkside Tavern is the mock Tudor building on Merrion Street near its junction with New Briggate and alongside St John’s Gardens. The nearest outdoor parking is the Cross Belgrave St. car park. Indoor car parking is in the St John’s Centre car park on Merrion St., or the Citipark Car Park on Merrion Way is a little further away but cheaper. Why not get a drink from the bar downstairs when you arrive and then join us upstairs?
For all locations we meet from 7:45pm. Please try to be there by 8pm for the talk.
Can’t make it? Don’t worry … Don’t worry if you can’t make it to any of our preview nights – it’s not essential! You can always find out more about Spice on our website at www.spiceyorks.com. Or give us a call during office hours on 0113 418 2818 where we’ll be happy to answer any questions whether they are general ones about Spice or about a specific event. If you’re not already a member you can join either online or by phone and get started! Once you have your membership number you can login to the website to book events. The next page has lots of suggestions of great events to start you off, but there aren’t any set rules – just choose something that looks fun or interesting and get involved. Recommended New Members Events We understand it can be very daunting when you are a new member, or thinking about joining Spice. To help you, we have put together a New Members’ Pathway that guides you through the best route to getting out and about, experiencing new things and making lots of new friends. This is just a suggested pathway; you are of course welcome to dive into Spice on any event. Peak District Walk: Carsington Water
Spice Rambles Rambles: Essential Information All Spice walks are designed to be fun, enjoyable, and above all, safe. All the walk leaders we use are experienced and carry first aid and emergency equipment but all walkers must ensure that they are properly equipped for the conditions. If you are a newcomer to Spice Rambles, please feel free to contact the walk leaders through the Spice Office. The leaders will be happy to discuss the appropriate type of clothing and equipment for use on Spice walks but here are a few general points to bear in mind. No jeans or trainers, please. Any Spice Ramble may involve walking over open country, not necessarily over well-defined paths, and it should not be assumed that you are going for a stroll in the park. You should wear warm clothing, preferably in the form of several layers, and all walkers must bring waterproof jackets and trousers. Happily, accidents and injuries are extremely rare but "injuries" are often caused by ill-fitting boots or inappropriate socks. A relatively minor injury out in the wilds can result in the walk being curtailed, so please ensure that you are happy with the fit of your boots and socks. Bring liquids and a packed lunch. Even if the write up suggests a convenient pub stop, please do not take this for granted. Pubs have been known to be full or even closed. A Spice ramble is not a race. The leader's responsibility is to ensure the safety of all the party, so he will often have to spend time at the back of the group. All walkers should ensure that they do not lose contact with the leader. If you can't see the leader, please stop and wait. (Neither Spice nor the walk leaders can be held responsible if a walker sustains an injury whilst out of touch with the leader.) Please be ready on time. There will be over 20 walkers taking part in a typical Spice ramble. The time specified in the newsletter is the Start time. If you are not ready to start walking promptly, you will be inconveniencing all those who had the foresight to get ready on time. Some rambles give a postcode near to the meet point; these are given for guidance only and members should not rely on Satnav systems to find the precise meet point for a walk. Always take the printed directions and a map with you. Please remember that Spice cannot be held responsible for the security of the car parking. Please ensure that you take sensible precautions to protect your car and belongings. Well behaved dogs are welcome on most walks unless otherwise stated, but must be pre-booked - please write it on your booking form or in the notes when booking online if you are bringing dogs. It is the owner's responsibility to ensure that the dog is kept under control on a fixed lead with a length of no more than two metres at all times, and is not allowed to cause a nuisance. You must bring a suitable lead and use it. Dogs must not be allowed off the lead at any time unless agreed with the walk leader after consultation with the other walkers.
Facebook We have a Facebook group for our walkers and walk leaders to share News, Photos, Gossip, Events and all things ‘walk’ related. Please follow the link below & join if you are one of our many, many walkers! www.facebook.com/groups/SpiceYorkshireWalkers

Sunday 24th December at 10:30am Edgworth, Bolton (BL7 0DU) Edgworth Medical Centre, Bolton £5 Member, £7 Guest Wade Murphy 07807 031485
Today’s walk takes us from the village of Edgworth via the Wayoh reservoir then out onto open moorland which will include a quite steep but relatively short climb up to cheetham close (329m) where we will find the bronze age stone circle. The views from here can be quite spectacular,(on a clear day), including Manchester, and the Derbyshire hills beyond. Then we cross to Turton heights, (343m).With views across to Pendle hill and the Yorkshire peaks beyond. From here it is either downhill or level walking including wooded areas, so those who are used to level 4 but would like a little bit more of a challenge, don’t be put off. Proper walking boots are essential for this walk as it can be quite boggy on the tops of the moors. Distance: 7 miles

If you are reading this you are probably open minded, forward thinking and have an interest in having your best future, read on.This event has been designed and run by Maureen Fearon who is one of our popular trainers particularly as our love guru however she is also an E.F.T. therapist and has had many requests to run this day. She says, “I came across this technique years ago and because it seemed “mad” I rejected it, thinking “I’m not doing that!”. However it kept popping into my world and I became curious. I tried it and was flummoxed as to how it seemed to work like magic! I just had to explore what it was all about and I have been so grateful that I did. It has been a fantastic tool within my own personal development and coping with the tough stuff that comes along in life which can “floor” us. With clients I have experienced the most amazing outcomes.

Abseiling for the Terrified ..a great way to get started
Dates: Saturday 18th November Saturday 20th January Place: Black Rocks, Matlock # Time: 10am Cost: £34 Member, £39 Guest Many members would love to do an abseil, but are too petrified to book the ones we normally offer. After seeing Mark Fenton's ability to gently coax even the most frightened, or physically disadvantaged people into achieving brilliant outdoor feats, I started these special sessions which have proved extremely popular! You just need to bring a little faith, and the will to succeed! The feeling you’ll get from your success is well worth it all. Mark will get you to overcome any fears by building up your confidence gradually. First we get used to the equipment and how to use it on a few very short descents, before tackling some bigger abseils if you feel able. You’ll not be forced to do anything you are uncomfortable with, or feel stupid if you back out of any stage. So go on…you’ve nothing to lose but your fears!

Grade:2; Distance: 22 miles This will be a tough but rewarding days riding with stunning views of some of the best scenery in the Peak District. Starting from Edale we climb out of the valley and head over to Roych Clough and Hayfield where we will stop for lunch in a local pub or cafe, before returning via the renowned Jacob’s Ladder. This is another classic Peak district ride. As mentioned lunch will be at either a pub or cafe en route, but to keep you going whilst riding you need to bring some snacks and drink. Helmets MUST be worn at all times during the ride NO HELMET – NO RIDE. This ride is not for beginners to mountain biking and we very strongly recommend that you have at least attendance a Spice “improvers” Mountain Bike Day BEFORE attempting this one so you are fully aware of what’s involved. You should be prepared to get wet and muddy and be capable of riding uphill without the need for a respirator at the top of the hill. There are some rocky sections on the descents which are all walk-able. We aim to be back by 3 to 3:30pm subject to any mechanical issues. The ride is guided and supported by a trained mountain bike guide with many years of experience. Any questions give Jez a call on 07974 967209.

Saturday 18th November 10:30am to 4:30pm Spice, 11 Poplar Road, Stretford (M32 9AN) £39.50 Member, £44.50 Guest Maureen Fearon
Includes: refreshments and a light lunch Statistics say the internet is the most successful way for people to get dating and find love. That’s great; however there is a collection of “know how” and skills. The media is quick to tell us about the bad that happens, so it makes sense to be equipped so that you get the best results and find quality love. And as with all Maureen’s workshops – There’s lots more packed into the day with fun, laughter and lovely people. This event is for all: people brand new to internet dating and those wanting better results. Maureen will bring her camera and can get some really attractive pictures of you. Good pictures play a key role in attracting. (This is an option; you don’t have to have your picture taken.)There are so many skills involved and many people don’t get the success they deserve. Too many “catches” are overlooked, get no response or dismissed because of misunderstanding and bad communication skills! Well, those really wanting to use this great “vehicle” of the internet to find love should come onto this day. Be warned it could change your life FOREVER! Remember if others have found love, happiness and marriage so can you!

Silent “drip” night, Holy “splosh” night, all is calm “plop”, all is bright! Today we have a true Spice event with a difference. We meet under the covered area by the tourist information at the entrance to the main long stay car park in the centre of Castleton at 5pm. Please do not be late as we need to then walk as a group the short distance to Peak Cavern for carols by candlelight in the cavern. This will be held in the Vast Cave with the Hathersage Band. Peak Cavern is the largest cave system in the Peak District and is also known as the Devil's Arse for reasons you may discover when you visit! It's a fascinating place in itself and was home to Britain's last troglodytes until 1915, but tonight it will come alive to the traditional sound of Christmas. You will be welcomed on arrival with mulled wine and mince pies and then we will join the carol concert in this unique venue lit only by candles and the lights of the Christmas tree. It can be very cold so wrap up warm, dry and wear sturdy boots/shoes. You may find it useful to bring a small hand torch. Castleton is a lovely little village; it always looks fantastic at this time of year with all its Christmas decorations so why not arrive a bit early to get some last minute shopping done. Please note: There are no toilets at the cave. Nearest facilities are in the main car park in the village.

What a great way to start the weekend. Can you escape a room in forty-five minutes? Look for clues and solve puzzles. If you’re successful, well done. If not, it doesn’t matter. You’ll have had a great time and, in time honoured tradition, I’m sure we’ll go for a drink afterwards!
Sunday 17th December from 10am to 1:30pm Matlock Bath, Matlock, Derbyshire # (DE4 3PG) £35 Member, £39 Guest Sean / Mark for Spice West Midlands
Another of Mark's brilliant events that are aimed at those who really want to conquer a challenging outdoor pursuit, but feel the need for some extra 'loving care' and patience to help them meet their ambition. This day is an ideal introduction in an interesting cave system, but one where you have the peace of mind of knowing that you could quickly be brought to the surface if the experience proves too much! So if you've always been a bit wary of taking your first trip underground then this is the event for you. Grade: Easy Directions will be sent out before the day. It’s Christmas: Mark and Sean have some tricks up their sleeves to add a bit of Christmas Cheer to our day – enjoy! Medical Note: If you have any medical conditions that could prevent you taking part in this adventure activity, please contact your doctor in advance to check. If you are unsure, please contact the instructor, Mark Fenton directly on 07798 790766 or your Spice office. DID YOU KNOW? Caves are cool in summer and warm in winter! In fact, they’re the same temperature all year round, so there’s no need to worry about caving in the winter time! So a cave is often the best place to be!

SPICE National Weekend new Welcome to the NEW Spice National Weekend Break at Denstone College – we hope you can join us! It’s taken a while to find and is very different to Center Parcs but we believe we have found a venue that can fulfil the main focus of a national weekend which is to bring Spice members together for a fun weekend to meet old faces and make lots of new friends. But Denstone also offers so much more with plenty of FREE sports facilities available and full board all included in the package. Based near Uttoxer in Staffordshire between the M1 and M6 motorways access to Denstone is hopefully relatively easy for everyone by road and if travelling by rail Uttoxer is the closest location station (approx 6½ miles) or Stafford and Derby are the nearest mainline stations (both approx 21 miles). Whats included in the package are your breakfast and lunches for Friday and Saturday with 2 evening meals and your accommodation. Your 2 party nights (one themed with disco) with live band on Saturday night. Other than that it is all still in planning but rest assured that with all your coordinators involved there will be plenty of activities available throughout the weekend including walks and sports to keep you interested and occupied – a more detailed plan will be available nearer the weekend. The weekend finishes on Sunday and you can continue to socialise on site until 12 noon. Alternatively the college is only 20 minutes drive from Alton Towers - if thrill rides are your thing we will be arranging a meet up at the park at 11am on Sunday and are looking to arrange discounted tickets if you book with us in advance. There will also be some local events available to book arranged by your coordinators on Sunday if a theme park isn’t your thing. We have a number of different types of accommodation available to you spread across a number of buildings and they are hopefully self explanatory but here is a little more information just in case! The rooms are fairly basic but have everything you need and all accommodation is on a full board basis.

CYPRUS SPRING CHILLOUT
8 days, Saturday 06 May 18 from £719 Departs London Gatwick, Luton, Birmingham & Manchester Cyprus, in the eastern Mediterranean, has a rich, turbulent history stretching back to antiquity. Known for its beaches, it has a rugged interior with wine-growing regions. It’s separated into a Greek south and Turkish north, with the capital Nicosia also divided. Coastal Paphos is famed for its archaeological sites relating to the cult of Aphrodite as it is believed to be where the goddess first came to earth and is ‘where the gods go on holiday’. The dividing line between Europe and the Orient, Cyprus has so much to offer and that’s not even mentioning the great weather!
La “Costa Tropical” (the Tropical Coast) is situated to the west of Málaga and runs along the shoreline of the province of Granada for more than 100 kms. It’s filled with picturesque beaches, cosy coves and charming little towns and villages. The Costa Tropical is blessed with a subtropical microclimate and its average annual temperature is 20º and has around 320 days of sunshine per year. This privileged climate has helped the fertile plains and gentle slopes that rise up from the beach to grow all kinds of tropical fruit, which is the one the most important economic resources in the area. There is also some tourism and some foreigners have settled in the area, but it has not happened in the massive way as it has done in the “Costa del Sol” to the other side of Málaga. There is still a Spanish atmosphere about the Costa Tropical, and it’s only a short distance away from locations as special as the Alpujarras (Sierra Nevada), the last Moorish stronghold on the Iberian Peninsula or Granada with its world famous Alhambra.
